Chiral Bismuth-Rhodium Paddlewheel Complexes Empowered by London Dispersion: The C-H Functionalization Nexus.

ABSTRACT: Heterobimetallic [BiRh] tetracarboxylate catalysts endowed with 1,3-disilylated phenylglycine paddlewheels benefit from interligand London dispersion. They were originally designed for asymmetric cyclopropanation but are now shown to perform very well in asymmetric C-H functionalization reactions too. Because of the confined ligand sphere about the derived donor/acceptor carbenes, insertions into unhindered methyl groups are kinetically favored, although methylene units also react with excellent levels of asymmetric induction; even gaseous ethane is a suitable substrate. Moreover, many functional groups in both partners are tolerated. The resulting products are synthetically equivalent to the outcome of traditional asymmetric ester alkylation, allylation, benzylation, propargylation and aldol reactions and therefore constitute a valuable nexus to more conventional chemical logic.

Project description:Heterobimetallic bismuth-rhodium paddlewheel complexes with phenylglycine ligands carrying TIPS-groups at the meta-positions of the aromatic ring exhibit outstanding levels of selectivity in reactions of donor/acceptor and donor/donor carbenes; at the same time, the reaction rates are much faster and the substrate scope is considerably wider than those of previous generations of chiral [BiRh] catalysts. As shown by a combined experimental, crystallographic, and computational study, the new catalysts draw their excellent application profile largely from the stabilization of the chiral ligand sphere by London dispersion (LD) interactions of the peripheral silyl substituents.

The chiral crown conformation in paddlewheel complexes.

Project description:Bimetallic paddlewheel complexes derived from imides of (S)-tert-leucine adopt 'chiral crown' configurations in which the four imide groups are projected in a chiral arrangement on one face, and the four tert-butyl groups are projected on the opposite face. In this contribution, the generality of the chiral crown conformation is examined through crystallographic studies where the metal and the nature of the chiral ligands are altered. Based upon these observations, a model is proposed to explain the factors which create bias for the chiral crown configuration.

Triple Resonance Experiments for the Rapid Detection of <sup>103</sup>Rh NMR Shifts: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study into Dirhodium and Bismuth-Rhodium Paddlewheel Complexes.

Project description:A H(C)Rh triple resonance NMR experiment makes the rapid detection of 103Rh chemical shifts possible, which were previously beyond reach. It served to analyze a series of dirhodium and bismuth-rhodium paddlewheel complexes of the utmost importance for metal-carbene chemistry. The excellent match between the experimental and computed 103Rh shifts in combination with a detailed analysis of the pertinent shielding tensors forms a sound basis for a qualitative and quantitative interpretation of these otherwise (basically) inaccessible data. The observed trends clearly reflect the influence exerted by the equatorial ligands (carboxylate versus carboxamidate), the axial ligands (solvents), and the internal "metalloligand" (Rh versus Bi) on the electronic estate of the reactive Rh(II) center.

London Dispersion in Alkane Solvents.

Project description:The importance of London dispersion interactions in solution is an ongoing debate. Although the significance of dispersion for structure and stability is widely accepted, the degree of its attenuation in solution is still not properly understood. Quantitative evaluations are derived mostly from computations. Experimental data provide guidelines to include London dispersion in solution phase design. Herein, dispersive interactions were examined with an azobenzene probe. Alkyl substituents in meta positions of the azobenzene core were systematically varied and the effect on the half-lives for the thermally induced Z to E isomerization in several alkane solvents was determined. The results show that intramolecular dispersion is only marginally influenced. In solvents with low surface tension, reduced destabilizing solvent-solvent interactions increase the half-life up to 20 %. Specific individual interactions between alkyl chains on the azobenzene and those of the solvent lead to additional fluctuations of the half-lives. These presumably result from structural changes of the conformer ensemble.

London Dispersion and Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions in Bulky Molecules: The Case of Diadamantyl Ether Complexes.

Project description:Diadamantyl ether (DAE, C20 H30 O) represents a good model to study the interplay between London dispersion and hydrogen-bond interactions. By using broadband rotational spectroscopy, an accurate experimental structure of the diadamantyl ether monomer is obtained and its aggregates with water and a variety of aliphatic alcohols of increasing size are analyzed. In the monomer, C-H⋅⋅⋅H-C London dispersion attractions between the two adamantyl subunits further stabilize its structure. Water and the alcohol partners bind to diadamantyl ether through hydrogen bonding and non-covalent Owater/alcohol ⋅⋅⋅H-CDAE and C-Halcohol ⋅⋅⋅H-CDAE interactions. Electrostatic contributions drive the stabilization of all the complexes, whereas London dispersion interactions become more pronounced with increasing size of the alcohol. Complexes with dominant dispersion contributions are significantly higher in energy and were not observed in the experiment. The results presented herein shed light on the first steps of microsolvation and aggregation of molecular complexes with London dispersion energy donor (DED) groups and the kind of interactions that control them.

Transient-axial-chirality controlled asymmetric rhodium-carbene C(sp<sup>2</sup>)-H functionalization for the synthesis of chiral fluorenes.

Project description:In catalytic asymmetric reactions, the formation of chiral molecules generally relies on a direct chirality transfer (point or axial chirality) from a chiral catalyst to products in the stereo-determining step. Herein, we disclose a transient-axial-chirality transfer strategy to achieve asymmetric reaction. This method relies on transferring point chirality from the catalyst to a dirhodium carbene intermediate with axial chirality, namely a transient-axial-chirality since this species is an intermediate of the reaction. The transient chirality is then transferred to the final product by C(sp2)-H functionalization reaction with exceptionally high enantioselectivity. We also generalize this strategy for the asymmetric cascade reaction involving dual carbene/alkyne metathesis (CAM), a transition-metal-catalyzed method to access chiral 9-aryl fluorene frameworks in high yields with up to 99% ee. Detailed DFT calculations shed light on the mode of the transient-axial-chirality transfer and the detailed mechanism of the CAM reaction.

Enantiopure Chiral Coordination Polymers Based on Polynuclear Paddlewheel Helices and Arsenyl Tartrate.

Project description:Herein, we report the preparation of chiral, one-dimensional coordination polymers based on trinuclear paddlewheel helices [M₃(dpa)₄]2+ (M = Co(II) and Ni(II); dpa = the anion of 2,2'-dipyridylamine). Enantiomeric resolution of a racemic mixture of [M₃(dpa)₄]2+ complexes was achieved by chiral recognition of the respective enantiomer by [Δ-As₂(tartrate)₂]2- or [Λ-As₂(tartrate)₂]2- in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), affording crystalline coordination polymers formed from [(Δ-Co₃(dpa)₄)(Λ-As₂(tartrate)₂)]·3DMF (Δ-1), [(Λ-Co₃(dpa)₄)(Δ-As₂(tartrate)₂)]·3DMF (Λ-1), [(Δ-Ni₃(dpa)₄)(Λ-As₂(tartrate)₂)]·(4 - n)DMF∙nEt₂O (Δ-2) or [(Λ-Ni₃(dpa)₄)(Δ-As₂(tartrate)₂)]·(4 - n)DMF∙nEt₂O (Λ-2) repeating units. UV-visible circular dichroism spectra of the complexes in DMF solutions demonstrate the efficient isolation of optically active species. The helicoidal [M₃(dpa)₄]2+ units that were obtained display high stability towards racemization as shown by the absence of an evolution of the dichroic signals after several days at room temperature and only a small decrease of the signal after 3 h at 80 °C.

Intramolecular London Dispersion Interactions in Single-Molecule Junctions.

Project description:This work shows the first example of using intramolecular London dispersion interactions to control molecular geometry and quantum transport in single-molecule junctions. Flexible σ-bonded molecular junctions typically occupy straight-chain geometries due to steric effects. Here, we synthesize a series of thiomethyl-terminated oligo(dimethylsilmethylene)s that bear [CH2-Si(CH3)2]n repeat units, where all backbone dihedral states are sterically equivalent. Scanning tunneling microscopy break-junction (STM-BJ) measurements and theoretical calculations indicate that in the absence of a strong steric bias concerted intramolecular London dispersion interactions staple the carbosilane backbone into coiled conformations that remain intact even as the junction is stretched to its breakpoint. As these kinked conformations are highly resistive to electronic transport, we observe record-high conductance decay values on an experimental junction length basis (β = 1.86 ± 0.12 Å-1). These studies reveal the potential of using intramolecular London dispersion interactions to design single-molecule electronics.

London dispersion dominating diamantane packing in helium nanodroplets.

Project description:Diamantane clusters formed inside superfluid helium nanodroplets were analyzed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Distinct cluster sizes were identified as "magic numbers" and the corresponding feasible structures for clusters consisting of up to 19 diamantane molecules were derived from meta-dynamics simulations and subsequent DFT computations. The obtained interaction energies were attributed to London dispersion attraction. Our findings demonstrate that diamantane units readily form assemblies even at low pressures and near-zero Kelvin temperatures, confirming the importance of the intermolecular dispersion effect for condensation of matter.
