Using R Shiny to develop a dashboard using IPEDS, U.S. Census, and bureau of labor statistics data.

ABSTRACT: This paper describes the development of an RStudio (now known as Posit) dashboard derived from the Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System, the United States Census Bureau, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics and provides the user with institutional, community, and career information of IPEDS reporting higher education institutions in the United States and its territories. With this dashboard, users can select and learn about institutions, explore enrollment trends and demographics, compare outcomes, and correlate community and institutional variables. Users can also link degrees to career projections and wages. This paper explains how the dashboard was developed with examples of R programming language.

Creating a surrogate commuter network from Australian Bureau of Statistics census data.

Project description:Between the 2011 and 2016 national censuses, the Australian Bureau of Statistics changed its anonymity policy compliance system for the distribution of census data. The new method has resulted in dramatic inconsistencies when comparing low-resolution data to aggregated high-resolution data. Hence, aggregated totals do not match true totals, and the mismatch gets worse as the data resolution gets finer. Here, we address several aspects of this inconsistency with respect to the 2016 usual-residence to place-of-work travel data. We introduce a re-sampling system that rectifies many of the artifacts introduced by the new ABS protocol, ensuring a higher level of consistency across partition sizes. We offer a surrogate high-resolution 2016 commuter dataset that reduces the difference between the aggregated and true commuter totals from ~34% to only ~7%, which is on the order of the discrepancy across partition resolutions in data from earlier years.

Data impacts of changes in U.S. Census Bureau procedures for race and ethnicity data.

Project description:Beginning with the 2020 decennial census and the 2020 American Community Survey (ACS), the U.S. Census Bureau implemented changes in question design, data processing, and coding procedures for the race and ethnicity data they collect that appear to have resulted in major data discontinuity. However, the Census Bureau has not released nor plans to release research showing the impact of these changes. We explore the impact of the Census Bureau's procedural changes on the racial and ethnic distributions of the Hispanic (generally and by country of origin) and the American Indian and Alaska Native populations, the two populations most impacted by these changes. We use the 2019 and 2021 one-year ACS public-use microdata and 2019 and 2021 NCHS mortality data to compare racial distributions and estimate and compare select demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, and mortality measures across the two years. Our results show that changes the Census Bureau implemented beginning with the 2020 decennial census and ACS appear to have had a significant impact on the comparability of Census Bureau race and ethnicity data. We find a significant data discontinuity impacting a wide variety of demographic, socioeconomic, and mortality statistics and analyses that rely on U.S. Census Bureau data as input for calculations. To mitigate these effects, methods that bridge race and ethnicity data between pre- and post-2020 census data are needed. Our research brings new attention and clarity to the race and ethnicity data discontinuity in Census Bureau data that started in 2020.

SOCR data dashboard: an integrated big data archive mashing medicare, labor, census and econometric information.

Project description:Intuitive formulation of informative and computationally-efficient queries on big and complex datasets present a number of challenges. As data collection is increasingly streamlined and ubiquitous, data exploration, discovery and analytics get considerably harder. Exploratory querying of heterogeneous and multi-source information is both difficult and necessary to advance our knowledge about the world around us. We developed a mechanism to integrate dispersed multi-source data and service the mashed information via human and machine interfaces in a secure, scalable manner. This process facilitates the exploration of subtle associations between variables, population strata, or clusters of data elements, which may be opaque to standard independent inspection of the individual sources. This a new platform includes a device agnostic tool (Dashboard webapp, http://socr.umich.edu/HTML5/Dashboard/) for graphical querying, navigating and exploring the multivariate associations in complex heterogeneous datasets. The paper illustrates this core functionality and serviceoriented infrastructure using healthcare data (e.g., US data from the 2010 Census, Demographic and Economic surveys, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Center for Medicare Services) as well as Parkinson's Disease neuroimaging data. Both the back-end data archive and the front-end dashboard interfaces are continuously expanded to include additional data elements and new ways to customize the human and machine interactions. A client-side data import utility allows for easy and intuitive integration of user-supplied datasets. This completely open-science framework may be used for exploratory analytics, confirmatory analyses, meta-analyses, and education and training purposes in a wide variety of fields.

Trends in Up-To-Date Colorectal Cancer Screening Among U.S. Adults Aged 50-75 Years and Variations by Race/Ethnicity and U.S. Census Bureau Divisions.

Project description:IntroductionMortality rates from colorectal cancer have declined over the past decades owing to population-based life-saving screening interventions. However, screening inequalities continue among racial and ethnic minorities despite having a higher disease burden. In this study, we assessed the patterns of up-to-date colorectal cancer screening rates among racial/ethnic groups across the U.S. Census Bureau Divisions.MethodsThis population-based cross-sectional study used weighted data from 4 cycles of the Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020) of adults aged 50‒75 years without a previous diagnosis of colorectal cancer. The primary outcome was guideline-recommended up-to-date colorectal cancer screening. We used logistic regression models to examine temporal trends in up-to-date colorectal cancer screening from 2014 to 2020. In addition, we conducted detailed descriptive statistics of up-to-date screening rates, comparing trends in 2020 with those in 2014 overall by race/ethnicity and U.S. census divisions.ResultsThe overall proportion of individuals with up-to-date colorectal cancer screening increased from 66.5% in 2014 to 72.5% in 2020 (p<0.001). For racial/ethnic subgroups, from 2014 to 2020, screening rates increased significantly among non-Hispanic Whites (68.5%‒74.5%, p<0.001), non-Hispanic Blacks (68.0%‒74.6%, p<0.001), and Hispanics (51.5%‒62.8%, p<0.001). However, increases were not observed in all U.S. Census Bureau Divisions.ConclusionsAlthough colorectal cancer screening rates improved over time, they fall short of the 80% target. Substantial racial/ethnic and geographic disparities remain. Future studies investigating the factors influencing these disparities are needed.

Enabling High-Throughput Searches for Multiple Chemical Data Using the U.S.-EPA CompTox Chemicals Dashboard.

Project description:The core goal of cheminformatics is to efficiently store robust and accurate chemical information and make it accessible for drug discovery, environmental analysis, and the development of prediction models including quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a web-based application, the CompTox Chemicals Dashboard, which provides access to a compilation of data generated within the agency and sourced from public databases and literature and to utilities for real-time QSAR prediction and chemical read-across. While the vast majority of online tools only allow interrogation of chemicals one at a time, the Dashboard provides a batch search feature that allows for the sourcing of data based on thousands of chemical inputs at one time, by chemical identifier (e.g., names, Chemical Abstract Service registry numbers, or InChIKeys), or by mass or molecular formulas. Chemical information that can then be sourced via the batch search includes chemical identifiers and structures; intrinsic, physicochemical and fate and transport properties; in vitro and in vivo toxicity data; and the presence in environmentally relevant lists. We outline how to use the batch search feature and provide an overview regarding the type of information that can be sourced by considering a series of typical-use questions.

Data for estimating the U.S. labor wedge.

Project description:The after-tax labor wedge is defined as the log difference between the MRS and the MPL excluding taxes. This article introduces the data and approach that are used to estimate the U.S. after-tax labor wedge to provide empirical support for the research article entitled "Credit Crunch, Heterogeneity and the Labor Wedge" (Zhang, 2018 (Forthcoming)) [4]. I measure the U.S. after-tax labor wedge and then decompose it into the sum of the gap between the MPL and the real wage (the MPL component) and the gap between the real wage and the MRS (the MRS component). The after-tax labor wedge and its decomposition are measured using quarterly data from 1947Q1 to 2017Q3.

Semantically interoperable census data: unlocking the semantics of census data using ontologies and linked data.

Project description:The Canadian Census of Population is a survey that collects statistical information on the Canadian population. These censuses contain valuable socioeconomic data that is often used by both the public and private sectors for project planning and decision-making. However, there are a few issues that may arise when using census data. Firstly, data wrangling, which is often a time-consuming process, needs to be conducted in order to clean and prepare the data for integration and use. Secondly, different datasets across different census years may be using different terms to describe the same concept/entity, hence creating a problem of referential equivalence (i.e., how do we know whether two different datasets are referring to the same concepts/entities?). Lastly, the data found in a census is often described using natural language that isn't easily interpreted by machines and can be difficult to break down or deconstruct. In this paper, we develop and propose the use of an ontology for representing the data from the Canadian Census of Population as linked data in order to address the aforementioned issues, evaluate the ontology using competency questions based on real world use cases, and discuss the advantages of census linked data for integration and visualisation uses.

The use of differential privacy for census data and its impact on redistricting: The case of the 2020 U.S. Census.

Project description:Census statistics play a key role in public policy decisions and social science research. However, given the risk of revealing individual information, many statistical agencies are considering disclosure control methods based on differential privacy, which add noise to tabulated data. Unlike other applications of differential privacy, however, census statistics must be postprocessed after noise injection to be usable. We study the impact of the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest disclosure avoidance system (DAS) on a major application of census statistics, the redrawing of electoral districts. We find that the DAS systematically undercounts the population in mixed-race and mixed-partisan precincts, yielding unpredictable racial and partisan biases. While the DAS leads to a likely violation of the “One Person, One Vote” standard as currently interpreted, it does not prevent accurate predictions of an individual’s race and ethnicity. Our findings underscore the difficulty of balancing accuracy and respondent privacy in the Census.

Undergraduate Neuroscience Education in the U.S.: An Analysis using Data from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Project description:Despite an apparent increase in undergraduate neuroscience programs offered by colleges and universities, there has been little effort to document this growth. In the present report we describe our analysis of the expansion of undergraduate neuroscience programs of study over more than 20 years and detail a number of institutional characteristics of colleges and universities that offer undergraduate neuroscience programs. These data reveal more than 100 institutions with undergraduate neuroscience programs as well as over 2000 college graduates that majored in neuroscience in 2008-2009. Understanding the current number as well as growth trends of undergraduate neuroscience programs found in U.S. colleges and universities has implications for neuroscience educators as well as for the funding of neuroscience research and educational activities.
