A literature-derived dataset on risk factors for dry eye disease.

ABSTRACT: Dry eye disease (DED) is a common disease associated with disorder of tear secretion. Research on risk factors for DED, such as depression, arthritis, thyroid disease, stroke and diabetes, is important to facilitate its diagnosis and prognosis. We created a dataset on risk factors for DED (DrDED) with public access that can provide up-to-date and validated data acquired from systematically searched and screened, high-quality studies. The established DrDED contained 119 studies published between 2000 and 2022. The range of the study sample size was from 43 to 4,871,504. The study types were, as follows: cross-sectional (n = 92), retrospective cohort (n = 9), prospective cohort (n = 10), and case-control (n = 8) studies. Data from eligible studies were collected and presented for the present study, including the publication information, study characteristics, definition and prevalence of the disease, and risk factors for DED, together with the strength of association. With the publication of new relevant studies, the DrDED will be updated, and the data will be made accessible to the users. Project description:ObjectiveThe purpose of this article is to systematically review the association between dry eye and sleep quality.MethodsPubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science, and grey literature databases were searched for observational studies published before April 2023. Meta-analysis was performed using STAT15 software.ResultsA total of 21 studies with 419,218 participants were included. The results showed that the dry eye subjects had a worse sleep quality than the healthy population, with poorer subjective sleep quality, longer sleep latency, and a higher risk of unhealthy sleep duration such as insufficient sleep or excessive sleep. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores of the dry eye subjects were significantly higher than those of the control subjects (WMD = 1.78, 95%CI: 1.06, 2.50, P < 0.001). The dry eye subjects scored higher than the control subjects in sleep quality, sleep latency, and sleep disturbance in PSQI; there was no difference between the dry eye individuals and control subjects in sleep duration, sleep efficiency, daytime dysfunction, and sleep medication scores. The risk of sleep disorders in the dry eye subjects was significantly higher than that in the non-dry eye subjects (RR = 2.20, 95%CI: 1.78, 2.72, P < 0.001); the risk of insufficient sleep in the dry eye subjects was higher than that in the control subjects (RR = 3.76, 95%CI: 3.15, 4.48, P < 0.001), and the prevalence of excessive sleepiness in dry eye subjects was higher than that in the control subjects (RR = 5.53, 95%CI: 3.83, 7.18, P < 0.001). The ESS scores of the dry eye subjects were significantly higher than those of the control subjects (WMD = 3.02, 95%CI: 2.43, 3.60, P < 0.01).ConclusionOur meta-analysis suggests that individuals with dry eye have a worse sleep quality than the healthy population, with poorer subjective sleep quality, longer sleep latency, and higher risk of unhealthy sleep duration such as insufficient sleep or excessive sleepiness.

Project description:BackgroundSymptomatic dry eye disease is a growing public health challenge especially among those who are visual display unit (VDU) users and other long-time near activity workers. Globally, computer user adults experience a surge in the prevalence of dry eye. Data is insufficient on the prevalence of dry eye disease among postgraduate students in Ethiopia. Therefore, the present was aimed to assess the prevalence of dry eye and its associated factors among postgraduate students at the University of Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 423 postgraduate students who were selected based on a simple random sampling technique. Data was collected through online symptom-based ocular surface disease index questionnaire. Binary logistic regression was used to test the association and p-value of <0.05 was considered to determine the significance of the association.ResultsFrom the total postgraduate students, 404 completed the study with a response rate of 95.5%. The prevalence of symptomatic dry eye disease was 50.5% (95% CI, 45.1%-54.9%). Average continuous visual display unit use for 2-4hours per day[AOR = 2.57 (95% CI, 1.27-5.21)] and for> 4hours per day[AOR = 3.77 (95% CI 1.87-7.59)], duration of visual display unit use for 3-5 years [AOR = 2.24 (95% CI, 1.17-4.31)], 6-8 years [AOR = 2.46 (95% CI,1.31-4.62)] and > 8 years [AOR = 3.25 (95% CI, 1.63-6.48)], average sleeping hour < 7 hours/day within last week [AOR = 2.17 (95% CI, 1.35-3.49)] and current known allergic conjunctivitis [AOR = 5.42 (95% CI, 2.43-12.10)] were significantly associated with symptomatic dry eye disease.Conclusion and recommendationIn this study, about half of postgraduate students faced symptomatic dry eye disease. Significant association was observed between symptomatic dry eye disease and average continuous hours of visual display unit use, duration of visual display unit use in years, shortage of sleep and current known allergic conjunctivitis. It is advisable for postgraduate students to limit screen exposure hour and establish regular breaking time along their exposure. It is also advisable to have optimum sleep as possible. It is also important to explore dry eye disease on a large sample incorporating clinical tests.

Project description:BackgroundDry eye disease (DED), Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and Sjögren's syndrome dry eye disease (SS-DED) are eye dryness conditions that show significant overlap in various symptoms of ocular discomfort. The aim of this study was to qualitatively explore the patient experience and evaluate content validity of the newly developed Dry Eye Disease Questionnaire (DED-Q).MethodsSemi-structured interviews were conducted with 61 US adults who reported experiencing ocular symptoms due to their physician-confirmed primary diagnosis of DED (n = 21), MGD (n = 20), or SS-DED (n = 20). The open-ended concept-elicitation phase was followed by cognitive debriefing (CD) of the DED-Q to evaluate participants' understanding and relevance of the instructions, items, response options, and recall periods. Interviews were also conducted with eight specialist healthcare professionals to assess clinical relevance of the concepts included. Verbatim interview transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis in ATLAS.ti v8 software.ResultsA total of 29 symptoms and 14 impacts on quality of life were reported across participant interviews. Primary ocular symptoms reported included eye dryness (n = 61/61; 100%), eye irritation (n = 55/61; 90%), eye itch (n = 54/61; 89%), burning sensation (n = 52/61; 85%), and foreign body sensation (n = 51/61; 84%). The most impacted aspects of daily life were using digital screens (n = 46/61; 75%), driving (n = 45/61; 74%), working (n = 39/61; 64%), and reading (n = 37/61; 61%). CD findings showed most participants had good understanding of DED-Q items and confirmed most concepts were relevant to the lived experience of their condition. Aside from few minor changes to the items and examples to facilitate more accurate interpretation, the proposed instruction wording was modified for various symptom and impact modules to encourage participants to focus only on dry eye vision problems.ConclusionsThis research identified multiple prevalent symptoms and impacts of DED, MGD, and SS-DED, most of which were similar across the conditions. The DED-Q was confirmed to be a content-valid PRO measure suitable for use in clinical studies to assess the patient experience of DED, MGD, and SS-DED. Future work will focus on evaluating the psychometric properties of the DED-Q for use as an efficacy endpoint in clinical trials.
