The Efficacy of Reminiscence Therapy in Cancer-Related Symptom Management: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

ABSTRACT:

Background

At present, simple reminiscence has been widely used in the field of neurocognitive disorders, life review/life review therapy has been widely used in the field of cancer, and both simple reminiscence and life review/life review therapy are suitable for psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety. However, the efficacy of reminiscence in treating cancer-related symptom has not been fully assessed.

Objectives

To evaluate the effect of reminiscence therapy (RT) on relieving cancer-related symptoms such as anxiety and depression in cancer survivals.

Methods

China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP database, Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, China Biomedical Database, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, EBSCO, Scopus, and Ovid databases were searched. To collect clinical randomized controlled trials (RCT) on RT and cancer-related studies published from the establishment of the database to October 05, 2021. Two researchers independently evaluated the articles that met the inclusion criteria, meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.4 software.

Results

A total of 20 RCTs published in 2010 to 2021 were included, with a total of 1853 cancer patients. Meta-analysis results showed that the anxiety scale (HADS-A and HAMA and SAS) and depression scale (HADS-D and HAMD and SDS) scores of the RT group were significantly lower than those of the control group (HADS-A: P = .0002; HAMA: P < .00001; SAS: P = .0010; HADS-D: P = .01; HAMD: P < .00001; SDS: P = .0001). Meta-analysis results showed that RT can improve overall quality of life of cancer patients of RT group to a certain extent hope (P < .00001). Meta-analysis results showed that the scores on the hope and dignity were significantly increased, and the difference were statistically significant (P < .001).

Conclusion

This review indicates that RT has significant efficacy on cancer-related symptoms such as anxiety and depression. RT for cancer survivals can effectively improve quality of life, self-hope, and self-esteem. The findings of this meta-analysis can provide direction for future symptom management research.

Project description:Available systematic reviews showed uncertainty on the effectiveness of using acupuncture and related therapies for palliative cancer care. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize current best evidence on acupuncture and related therapies for palliative cancer care. Five international and 3 Chinese databases were searched. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing acupuncture and related therapies with conventional or sham treatments were considered. Primary outcomes included fatigue, paresthesia and dysesthesias, chronic pain, anorexia, insomnia, limb edema, constipation, and health-related quality of life, of which effective conventional interventions are limited. Thirteen RCTs were included. Compared with conventional interventions, meta-analysis demonstrated that acupuncture and related therapies significantly reduced pain (2 studies, n = 175, pooled weighted mean difference: -0.76, 95% confidence interval: -0.14 to -0.39) among patients with liver or gastric cancer. Combined use of acupuncture and related therapies and Chinese herbal medicine improved quality of life in patients with gastrointestinal cancer (2 studies, n = 111, pooled standard mean difference: 0.75, 95% confidence interval: 0.36-1.13). Acupressure showed significant efficacy in reducing fatigue in lung cancer patients when compared with sham acupressure. Adverse events for acupuncture and related therapies were infrequent and mild. Acupuncture and related therapies are effective in reducing pain, fatigue, and in improving quality of life when compared with conventional intervention alone among cancer patients. Limitations on current evidence body imply that they should be used as a complement, rather than an alternative, to conventional care. Effectiveness of acupuncture and related therapies for managing anorexia, reducing constipation, paresthesia and dysesthesia, insomnia, and limb edema in cancer patients is uncertain, warranting future RCTs in these areas.

Project description:ObjectivesTo determine the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR)-based intervention on the symptoms and rehabilitation management in patients with breast cancer.DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.Study selectionWe included all eligible randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies (published in English and Chinese).ParticipantsPatients with breast cancer (≥18 years) undergoing cancer treatment.InterventionsAny intervention administered to improve the symptoms and rehabilitation of patients with breast cancer. The control group was given conventional care.OutcomesAll outcomes were as follows: pain, fatigue, anxiety, depressive symptoms, cognitive function, and range of motion of upper limb in patients with breast cancer.Data sourcesWe searched PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL and SinoMed, four electronic databases, covering the database establishment period to January 2022.Review methodsTwo reviewers independently extracted content and data consistent with the prespecified framework and assessed risk bias. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to pool data across trials. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager V.5.4.ResultsA total of eight studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in this study. The combined effect size showed that VR was positive for improving patients' anxiety(standard mean differenc (SMD)=-2.07, 95% CI= (-3.81 to -0.34), I2=95%) and abduction of upper limbs (MD=15.54, 95% CI= (12.79 to 18.29), I2=0%), but fatigue (SMD=-0.92, 95% CI= (-4.47 to 2.62), I2=99%) was not. Qualitative analysis showed VR improved patients' depressive symptoms, pain and cognitive function.ConclusionsVR technology has a good effect on symptoms and rehabilitation management of patients with breast cancer, but the quality of evidence is low, and the sample size is small. To date, there are few intervention studies, therefore, giving precise recommendation or conclusion is difficult. We have a favourable view of this, and more clinical studies are needed in the future to improve the credibility of the results.

Project description:BackgroundThere are numerous symptoms related to cancer and its treatments that can affect the psychosomatic health and quality of life of patients with cancer. The use of electronic symptom management systems (ESMSs) can help patients with cancer monitor and manage their symptoms effectively, improving their health-related outcomes. However, patients' adhesion to ESMSs decreases over time, and little is known about their real experiences with them. Therefore, it is necessary to gain a deep understanding of patients' experiences with ESMSs.ObjectiveThe purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize qualitative studies on the experiences of patients with cancer using ESMSs.MethodsA total of 12 electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EBSCOhost, Embase, PsycINFO, ProQuest, Scopus, Wanfang database, CNKI, CBM, and VIP, were searched to collect relevant studies from the earliest available record until January 2, 2024. Qualitative and mixed methods studies published in English or Chinese were included. The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement checklist) and the ENTREQ (Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research) statement were used to improve transparency in reporting the synthesis of the qualitative research. The Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) checklist was used to appraise the methodological quality of the included studies, and a meta-synthesis was conducted to interpret and synthesize the findings.ResultsA total of 21 studies were included in the meta-synthesis. The experiences of patients with cancer using ESMSs were summarized into three major categories: (1) perceptions and attitudes toward ESMSs; (2) the value of ESMSs; and (3) barriers, requirements, and suggestions for ESMSs. Subsequently, 10 subcategories emerged from the 3 major categories. The meta-synthesis revealed that patients with cancer had both positive and negative experiences with ESMSs. In general, patients recognized the value of ESMSs in symptom assessment and management and were willing to use them, but they still encountered barriers and wanted them to be improved.ConclusionsThis systematic review provides implications for developing future ESMSs that improve health-related outcomes for patients with cancer. Future research should focus on strengthening electronic equipment and technical support for ESMSs, improving their functional contents and participation forms, and developing personalized applications tailored to the specific needs and characteristics of patients with cancer.Trial registrationPROSPERO CRD42023421730; https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=421730.

Project description:BackgroundMigraine is a worldwide disabling chronic brain disorder, some studies suggest acupuncture-related therapy plays an important role in raising efficiency rates and reducing migraine attacks. However, clinical trials comparing the efficacy of different interventions for migraine are limited and controversial. This network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed to review all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the effects of acupuncture-related therapy for migraine.MethodsRandomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture-related therapy for migraine were searched in the following databases from the date of database inception to March 31, 2022, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP Database, Wanfang Database, and Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM). The primary endpoint was visual analog scale (VAS) scores. The secondary endpoints were the number of migraine days, duration of migraine, and frequency of migraine attacks. We used Cochrane risk of bias to assess the quality of evidence for outcomes.ResultsThirty-nine studies involving 4379 patients with 13 different acupuncture-related methods were evaluated. According to surface under the cumulative ranking curve value, acupoint injection was ranked the highest (98.0%) in VAS scores, followed by acupoint implantation (79.0%); electroacupuncture was the optimal intervention method (82.4%) in the number of migraine days, followed by embedding needle therapy (73.1%); embedding needle therapy ranked first (99.9%) in the duration of migraine, followed by acupoint injection (77.4%); acupoint injection was the best intervention (99.3%) in the frequency of migraine attacks, followed by conventional acupuncture plus massage (73.8%).ConclusionThese results provide preliminary evidence that acupuncture-related therapy could be recommended as one of the effective treatments for migraine. Conventional acupuncture has significant effects on improving VAS scores, the number of migraine days, duration of migraine, and frequency of migraine attacks.
