Project description:Hydrogen is considered to be a very efficient and clean fuel since it is a renewable and non-polluting gas with a high energy density; thus, it has drawn much attention as an alternative fuel, in order to alleviate the issue of global warming caused by the excess use of fossil fuels. In this work, a novel Cu/ZnS/COF composite photocatalyst with a core-shell structure was synthesized for photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting. The Cu/ZnS/COF microspheres formed by Cu/ZnS crystal aggregation were covered by a microporous thin-film COF with a porous network structure, where COF was also modified by the dual-effective redox sites of C=O and N=N. The photocatalytic hydrogen production results showed that the hydrogen production rate reached 278.4 µmol g-1 h-1, which may be attributed to its special structure, which has a large number of active sites, a more negative conduction band than the reduction of H+ to H2, and the ability to inhibit the recombination of electron-hole pairs. Finally, a possible mechanism was proposed to effectively explain the improved photocatalytic performance of the photocatalytic system. The present work provides a new concept, in order to construct a highly efficient hydrogen production catalyst and broaden the applications of ZnS-based materials.

Project description:In this study, novel ZnS@In2S3 core@shell hollow nanospheres were fabricated by a facile refluxing method for the first time, and the formation mechanism of hollow structure with interior architecture was discussed based on ion-exchange Ostwald ripening. As the photocatalytic material for degradation of gaseous o-Dichlorobenzene (o-DCB), the as-synthesized core@shell hollow nanospheres were found to show significantly enhanced catalytic performance for effective separation of photo-generated charges. Moreover, the mechanisms of enhanced activity were elucidated by band alignment and unique configuration. Such photocatalyst would meet the demands for the control of persistent organic pollutant (POPs) in the atmospheric environment.

Project description:To achieve a high quantum yield (QY) of nanomaterials suitable for optical applications, we improved the optical properties of AgIn5S8 (AIS) quantum dots (QDs) by employing an alloyed-core/inner-shell/outer-shell (ZAIS/ZIS/ZnS) structure. We also investigated the mechanism of optical transitions to clarify the improvement of QYs. In AIS, the low-energy absorption near the band edge region is attributed to the weakly allowed band gap transition, which gains oscillator strength through state intermixing and electron-phonon coupling. The main photoluminescence is also ascribed to the weakly allowed band gap transition with characteristics of self-trapped excitonic emission. With alloying/shelling processes, the weakly allowed transition is enhanced by the evolution of the electronic structures in the alloyed core, which improves the band gap emission. In shelled structures, the nonradiative process is reduced by the reconstructed lattice and passivated surface, ultimately leading to a high QY of 85% in ZAIS/ZIS/ZnS. These findings provide new insights into the optical transitions of AIS because they challenge previous conclusions. In addition, our work elucidates the mechanism behind the enhancement of QY accomplished through alloying/shelling processes, providing strategies to optimize nontoxic QDs for various applications using a green chemistry approach.

Project description:BackgroundBacteroides ovatus, a member of the genus Bacteroides, is considered for use in molecular-based methods as a general fecal indicator. However, knowledge on its fate and persistence after a fecal contamination event remains limited. In this study, the persistence of B. ovatus was evaluated under simulated sunlight exposure and in conditions similar to freshwater and seawater. By combining propidium monoazide (PMA) treatment and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) detection, the decay rates of B. ovatus were determined in the presence and absence of exogenous photosensitizers and in salinity up to 39.5 parts per thousand at 27°C.ResultsUVB was found to be important for B. ovatus decay, averaging a 4 log10 of decay over 6 h of exposure without the presence of extracellular photosensitizers. The addition of NaNO2, an exogenous sensitizer producing hydroxyl radicals, did not significantly change the decay rate of B. ovatus in both low and high salinity water, while the exogenous sensitizer algae organic matter (AOM) slowed down the decay of B. ovatus in low salinity water. At seawater salinity, the decay rate of B. ovatus was slower than that in low salinity water, except when both NaNO2 and AOM were present.ConclusionThe results of laboratory experiments suggest that if B. ovatus is released into either freshwater or seawater environment in the evening, 50% of it may be intact by the next morning; if it is released at noon, only 50% may be intact after a mere 5 min of full spectrum irradiation on a clear day. This study provides a mechanistic understanding to some of the important environmental relevant factors that influenced the inactivation kinetics of B. ovatus in the presence of sunlight irradiation, and would facilitate the use of B. ovatus to indicate the occurrence of fecal contamination.

Project description:Bisphenol A (BPA) produced from biomass is a typical endocrine disrupting compound that is carcinogenic and genotoxic and can be accumulated in water due to its extensive use and difficult degradation. In this study, the porous ZnO photocatalyst with core-shell structure and large surface area was successfully developed for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of BPA. The various effects of calcination temperatures, BPA concentrations, ZnO dosages, pH and inorganic ions on the degradation performance were systemically studied. The results showed that 99% degradation of BPA was achieved in 1 h using the porous ZnO calcined at 550°C under the conditions of 30 mg/L BPA, 1 g/L ZnO, and pH of 6.5. Besides, the inhibition effects of anions for the photocatalytic removal of BPA decreased in the order of H2 PO4- > HCO3- > SO42- > Cl-, while the cations K+, Ca2+, and Na+ had little effect on the photocatalytic degradation of BPA. The results of scavenging experiments showed that h+, · O2- , and e- played the key role in the photocatalytic degradation process. Finally, the main pathways of BPA degradation were proposed based on ten intermediates found in the degradation process. This work may provide a good guideline to degrade various endocrine disrupting compounds in wastewater treatment.

Project description:The hierarchical nanostructured CdS@MoS2 core shell was architectured using template free facile solvothermal technique. More significantly, the typical hexagonal phase of core CdS and shell MoS2 has been obtained. Optical study clearly shows the two steps absorption in the visible region having band gap of 2.4 eV for CdS and 1.77 eV for MoS2. The FESEM of CdS@MoS2 reveals the formation of CdS microsphere (as a core) assemled with 40-50 nm nanoparticles and covered with ultrathin nanosheets of MoS2 (Shell) having size 200-300 nm and the 10-20 nm in thickness. The overall size of the core shell structure is around 8 µm. Intially, there is a formation of CdS microsphre due to high affinity of Cd ions with sulfur and further growth of MoS2 thin sheets on the surface. Considering band gap ideally in visible region, photocatalytic hydrogen evolution using CdS@MoS2 core shell was investigated under natural sunlight. The utmost hydrogen evolution rate achieved for core shell is 416.4 µmole h-1 with apparent quantum yield 35.04%. The photocatalytic activity suggest that an intimate interface contact, extended visible light absorption and effective photo generated charge carrier separation contributed to the photocatalytic enhancement of the CdS@MoS2 core shell. Additional, the enhanced hole trapping process and effective electrons transfer from CdS to MoS2 in CdS@MoS2 core shell heterostructures can significantly contribute for photocatalytic activity. Such core shell heterostructure will also have potential in thin film solar cell and other microelectronic devices.

Project description:This study investigates the photocatalytic degradation of amoxicillin (AMO) by simulated solar irradiation using WO3 as a catalyst. A three-factor-three-level Box-Behnken design (BBD) consisting of 30 experimental runs is employed with three independent variables: initial AMO concentration, catalyst dosage, and pH. The experimental results are analyzed in terms of AMO degradation and mineralization, the latter of which is measured using dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The results show that the photocatalytic degradation of AMO follows pseudo-first-order kinetics. AMO degradation efficiency and the pseudo-first-order rate constants decrease with increasing initial AMO concentration and pH and increase with increasing catalyst dosage. Though AMO degradation is almost fully complete under the experimental conditions, DOC removal is much lower; the highest DOC removal rate is 35.82% after 180 min. Using these experimental results, second-order polynomial response surface models for AMO and DOC removal are constructed. In the AMO removal model, the first-order terms are the most significant contributors to the prediction, followed by the quadratic and interaction terms. Initial AMO concentration and pH have a significant negative impact on the photocatalytic degradation of AMO, while catalyst dosage has a significant positive impact. In contrast, in the DOC removal model, the quadratic terms make the most significant contribution to the prediction and the first-order terms the least. The optimal conditions for the photocatalytic degradation of AMO are found to be an initial AMO concentration of 1.0 μM, a catalyst dosage of 0.104 g/L, and a pH of 4, under which almost complete removal of AMO is achieved (99.99%).

Project description:There is an increasing interest in developing cost-effective technologies to produce hydrogen from sustainable resources. Herein we show a comprehensive study on the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as heterogeneous photocatalysts for H2 generation from photoreforming of glycerol aqueous solutions under simulated sunlight irradiation. The list of materials employed in this study include some of the benchmark Zr-MOFs such as UiO-66(Zr)-X (X: H, NO2, NH2) as well as MIL-125(Ti)-NH2 as the reference Ti-MOF. Among these solids, UiO-66(Zr)-NH2 exhibits the highest photocatalytic H2 production, and this observation is attributed to its adequate energy level. The photocatalytic activity of UiO-66(Zr)-NH2 can be increased by deposition of small Pt NPs as the reference noble metal co-catalyst within the MOF network. This photocatalyst is effectively used for H2 generation at least for 70 h without loss of activity. The crystallinity of MOF and Pt particle size were maintained as revealed by powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurements, respectively. Evidence in support of the occurrence of photoinduced charge separation with Pt@UiO-66(Zr)-NH2 is provided from transient absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies together with photocurrent measurements. This study exemplifies the possibility of using MOFs as photocatalysts for the solar-driven H2 generation using sustainable feedstocks.

Project description:The development of MOF-based efficient and reusable catalysts for hydrogen production under simulated sunlight irradiation, especially through overall water splitting, remains challenging. This is mainly due to either the inappropriate optical features or poor chemical stability of the given MOFs. Room temperature synthesis (RTS) of tetravalent MOFs is a promising strategy to design robust MOFs and their related (nano)composites. By employing these mild conditions, herein, we report for the first time that RTS leads to the efficient formation of highly redox active Ce(iv)-MOFs that are inaccessible at elevated temperatures. Consequently, not only highly crystalline Ce-UiO-66-NH2 is synthesized, but also many other derivatives and topologies (8 and 6-connected phases) without compromise in space-time yield. Their photocatalytic HER and OER activities under simulated sunlight irradiation are in good agreement with their energy level band diagrams: Ce-UiO-66-NH2 and Ce-UiO-66-NO2 are the most active photocatalysts for the HER and OER, respectively, with a higher activity than other metal-based UiO-type MOFs. Combining Ce-UiO-66-NH2 with supported Pt NPs results finally in one of the most active and reusable photocatalysts for overall water splitting into H2 and O2 under simulated sunlight irradiation, due to its efficient photoinduced charge separation evidenced by laser flash photolysis and photoluminescence spectroscopies.

Project description:Quantum dots (QDs) are widely used in optoelectronics, lighting, and photovoltaics leading to their potential release into the environment. The most promising alternative to the highly toxic cadmium selenide (CdSe) QDs are indium phosphide (InP) QDs, which show reduced toxicity and comparable optical and electronic properties. QD degradation leads to the release of toxic metal ions into the environment. Coating the QD core with robust shell(s) composed of another semi-conductor material enhances their properties and protects the QD from degradation. We recently developed double-shelled InP QDs, which proved to be less toxic than single-shell QDs. In the present study, we confirm their reduced cytotoxicity, with an LC50 at 77 nM for pristine gradient shell QDs and >100 nM for pristine thin and thick shell QDs. We also confirm that these three QDs, when exposed to simulated sunlight, show greater cytotoxicity compared to pristine ones, with LC50 ranging from 15 to 23 nM. Using a combination of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, we characterize the degradation kinetics and transformation products of single- and double-shell QDs, when exposed to solar light at high temperature, simulating environmental conditions. Non-toxic pristine QDs degrade to form toxic In−phosphate, In−carboxylate, Zn−phosphate, and oxidized Se, all of which precipitate as heterogeneous deposits. Comparison of their degradation kinetics highlights that the QDs bearing the thickest ZnS outer shell are, as expected, the most resistant to photodegradation among the three tested QDs, as gradient shell, thin shell, and thick shell QDs lose their optical properties in less than 15 min, 60 min, and more than 90 min, respectively. They exhibit the highest photoluminescence efficiency, i.e., the best functionality, with a photoluminescence quantum yield in aqueous solution of 24%, as compared to 18% for the gradient shell and thin shell QDs. Therefore, they can be considered as safer-by-design QDs.
