Project description:Hydrogel substrate-based micropatterns can be adjusted using the pattern shape and size, affecting cell behaviors such as proliferation and differentiation under various cellular environment parameters. An electrically conductive hydrogel pattern system mimics the native muscle tissue environment. In this study, we incorporated polyaniline (PANi) in a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogel matrix through UV-induced photolithography with photomasks, and electrically conductive hydrogel micropatterns were generated within a few seconds. The electrical conductance of the PANi/PEG hydrogel was 30.5 ± 0.5 mS/cm. C2C12 myoblasts were cultured on the resulting substrate, and the cells adhered selectively to the PANi/PEG hydrogel regions. Myogenic differentiation of the C2C12 cells was induced, and the alignment of myotubes was consistent with the arrangement of the line pattern. The expression of myosin heavy chain on the line pattern showed potential as a substrate for myogenic cell functionalization.

Project description:Different polyaniline (PANI)-based hybrid films were successfully prepared by electro-polymerizing aniline monomers onto pre-spin-coated indium tin oxide (ITO) glass slides with WO3, graphene, or WO3/graphene films. Comparing with pristine PANI, the shifts of the characteristic peaks of PANI-based nanocomposites in UV-visible absorption spectra (UV-vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicate the chemical interaction between the PANI matrix and the nanofillers, which is also confirmed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Corresponding coloration efficiencies were obtained for the WO3/PANI (40.42 cm2 C-1), graphene/PANI (78.64 cm2 C-1), and WO3/graphene/PANI (67.47 cm2 C-1) films, higher than that of the pristine PANI film (29.4 cm2 C-1), suggesting positive effects of the introduced nanofillers on the electrochromic performance. The areal capacitances of the films were observed to increase following the order as bare WO3 < WO3/graphene < pristine PANI < WO3/PANI < graphene/PANI < WO3/graphene/PANI films from both the cyclic voltammogram (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) results. The enhanced energy storage and electrochromic performances of the PANI-based nanocomposite films can be attributed to the capacitance contributions of the introduced nanofillers, increased PANI amount, and the rougher morphology due to the embedment of the nanofillers into the PANI matrix. This extraordinary energy storage and electrochromic performances of the WO3/graphene/PANI film make it a promising candidate for combined electrochromic and energy storage applications.

Project description:Quasi all water soluble composites use graphene oxide (GO) or reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as graphene based additives despite the long and harsh conditions required for their preparation. Herein, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films containing few layer graphene (FLG) are prepared by the co-mixing of aqueous colloids and casting, where the FLG colloid is first obtained via an efficient, rapid, simple, and bio-compatible exfoliation method providing access to relatively large FLG flakes. The enhanced mechanical, electrical conductivity, and O2 barrier properties of the films are investigated and discussed together with the structure of the films. In four different series of the composites, the best Young's modulus is measured for the films containing around 1% of FLG. The most significant enhancement is obtained for the series with the largest FLG sheets contrary to the elongation at break which is well improved for the series with the lowest FLG sheets. Relatively high one-side electrical conductivity and low percolation threshold are achieved when compared to GO/rGO composites (almost 10-3 S/cm for 3% of FLG and transport at 0.5% FLG), while the conductivity is affected by the formation of a macroscopic branched FLG network. The composites demonstrate a reduction of O2 transmission rate up to 60%.

Project description:Conductive composite materials have attracted considerable interest of researchers for application in stretchable sensors for wearable health monitoring. In this study, highly stretchable and conductive composite films based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiopehe):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (CMC-PEDOT:PSS) were fabricated. The composite films achieved excellent electrical and mechanical properties by optimizing the lab-synthesized PEDOT:PSS, dimethyl sulfoxide, and glycerol content in the CMC matrix. The optimized composite film exhibited a small increase of only 1.25-fold in relative resistance under 100% strain. The CMC-PEDOT:PSS composite film exhibited outstanding mechanical properties under cyclic tape attachment/detachment, bending, and stretching/releasing tests. The small changes in the relative resistance of the films under mechanical deformation indicated excellent electrical contacts between the conductive PEDOT:PSS in the CMC matrix, and strong bonding strength between CMC and PEDOT:PSS. We fabricated highly stretchable and conformable on-skin sensors based on conductive and stretchable CMC-PEDOT:PSS composite films, which can sensitively monitor subtle bio-signals and human motions such as respiratory humidity, drinking water, speaking, skin touching, skin wrinkling, and finger bending. Because of the outstanding electrical properties of the films, the on-skin sensors can operate with a low power consumption of only a few microwatts. Our approach paves the way for the realization of low-power-consumption stretchable electronics using highly stretchable CMC-PEDOT:PSS composite films.

Project description:Electrode surfaces have been widely modified with electrically conductive polymers, including polypyrrole (PPY), to improve the performance of electrodes. To utilize conductive polymers for electrode modification, strong adhesion between the polymer films and electrode substrates should be ensured with high electrical/electrochemical activities. In this study, PPY films were electrochemically polymerized on electrodes (e.g., indium tin oxide (ITO)) with dopamine as a bio-inspired adhesive molecule. Efficient and fast PPY electrodeposition with dopamine (PDA/PPY) was found; the resultant PDA/PPY films exhibited greatly increased adhesion strengths of up to 3.7 ± 0.8 MPa and the modified electrodes had electrochemical impedances two to three orders of magnitude lower than that of an unmodified electrode. This electrochemical deposition of adhesive and conductive PDA/PPY offers a facile and versatile electrode modification for various applications, such as biosensors and batteries.

Project description:Stimuli responsive membranes, which are able to respond to environmental stimuli, are attracting ever-increasing interests. In this study, we blended exfoliated graphite (EG) into the polyaniline (PANI) and developed PANI/EG composite membranes. The properties of the new generated membranes, especially the stimuli response properties (e.g., electrical tuneability, deformation), were studied. The fouling removal ability of the membrane under applied electrical potential was also investigated by using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model foulant. A flat membrane with defect-free surface and good adhesion to the support layer was formed by non-solvent induced phase separation method. The electrical conductivity of the formed PANI/EG composite membrane was (5.10 ± 0.27) ×10-4 S cm-1. The dynamic droplet penetration rate through the membranes showed an increase under applied electrical potential, which gives a preliminary quantitative indication of the electrical tuneability of the membranes. The membrane deformation appeared at a fast response under applied potential and recovered to its original position immediately when removing the applied potential. The application of electrical potential led to the removal of BSA foulant from the membrane surface as indicated by the increase in permeance of the fouled membrane on cleaning with 46.2% flux recovery ratio and increased BSA concentration in the wash solution. The electrically conductive PANI/EG composite membranes are able to respond to electrical stimuli, enabling a new range of potential applications including externally tuneability and in situ removal and control of fouling.

Project description:Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) is an emerging vapor-phase synthetic route for the preparation of organic-inorganic composites. Previously, we investigated the potential of polyaniline (PANI)-InOx composite thin films prepared using SIS for application in electrochemical energy storage. In this study, we investigated the effects of the number of InOx SIS cycles on the chemical and electrochemical properties of PANI-InOx thin films via combined characterization using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The area-specific capacitance values of PANI-InOx samples prepared with 10, 20, 50, and 100 SIS cycles were 1.1, 0.8, 1.4, and 0.96 mF/cm², respectively. Our result shows that the formation of an enlarged PANI-InOx mixed region directly exposed to the electrolyte is key to enhancing the pseudocapacitive properties of the composite films.

Project description:Polyaniline (PANI) has been widely used as an electroactive material in various applications including sensors, electrochromic devices, solar cells, electroluminescence, and electrochemical energy storage, owing to PANI's unique redox properties. However, the chemical and electrochemical stability of PANI-based materials is not sufficiently high to maintain the performance of devices under many practical applications. Herein, we report a route to enhancing the chemical and electrochemical stability of PANI through layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. PANI was assembled with different types of polyelectrolytes, and a comparative study between three different PANI-based layer-by-layer (LbL) films is presented here. Polyacids of different acidity and molecular structure, i.e., poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), polystyrene sulfonate (PSS), and tannic acid (TA), were used. The effect of polyacids' acidity on film growth, conductivity, and chemical and electrochemical stability of PANI was investigated. The results showed that the film growth of the LbL system depended on the acidic strength of the polyacids. All LbL films exhibited improved chemical and electrochemical stability compared to PANI films. The doping level of PANI was strongly affected by the type of dopants, resulting in different chemical and electrochemical properties; the strongest polyacid (PSS) can provide the highest conductivity and chemical stability of conductive PANI. However, the electrochemical stability of PANI/PAA was found to be better than all the other films.

Project description:A Cu@Pani/MoS2 nanocomposite was successfully synthesized via combined in-situ oxidative polymerization and hydrothermal reaction and applied to an electrochemical nonenzymatic glucose sensor. The morphology of the prepared Cu@Pani/MoS2 nanocomposite was characterized using FE-SEM and Cs-STEM, and electrochemical analysis was performed using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronoamperometry techniques. Electrostatic interaction between Cu@Pani and MoS2 greatly enhanced the charge dispersion, electrical conductivity, and stability, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance. The Cu@Pani/MoS2 was used as an electrocatalyst to detect glucose in an alkaline medium. The proposed glucose sensor exhibited a sensitivity, detection limit, and wide linear range of 69.82 μAmM-1cm-2, 1.78 μM, and 0.1-11 mM, respectively. The stability and selectivity of the Cu@Pani/MoS2 composite for glucose compared to that of the potential interfering species, as well as its ability to determine the glucose concentration in diluted human serum samples at a high recovery percentage, demonstrated its viability as a nonenzymatic glucose sensor.

Project description:With increasing environmental awareness, lignin will play a key role in the transition from the traditional materials industry towards sustainability and Industry 4.0, boosting the development of functional eco-friendly composites for future electronic devices. In this work, a detailed study of the effect of unmodified lignin on 3D printed light-curable acrylic composites was performed up to 4 wt.%. Lignin ratios below 3 wt.% could be easily and reproducibly printed on a digital light processing (DLP) printer, maintaining the flexibility and thermal stability of the pristine resin. These low lignin contents lead to 3D printed composites with smoother surfaces, improved hardness (Shore A increase ~5%), and higher wettability (contact angles decrease ~19.5%). Finally, 1 wt.% lignin was added into 3D printed acrylic resins containing 5 wt.% p-toluensulfonic doped polyaniline (pTSA-PANI). The lignin/pTSA-PANI/acrylic composite showed a clear improvement in the dispersion of the conductive filler, reducing the average surface roughness (Ra) by 61% and increasing the electrical conductivity by an order of magnitude (up to 10-6 S cm-1) compared to lignin free PANI composites. Thus, incorporating organosolv lignin from wood industry wastes as raw material into 3D printed photocurable resins represents a simple, low-cost potential application for the design of novel high-valued, bio-based products.
