Project description:Rechargeable non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries with a large theoretical capacity are emerging as a high-energy electrochemical device for sustainable energy strategy. Despite many efforts made to understand the fundamental Li-O2 electrochemistry, the kinetic process of cathodic reactions, associated with the formation and decomposition of a solid Li2O2 phase during charging and discharging, remains debate. Here we report direct visualization of the charge/discharge reactions on a gold cathode in a non-aqueous lithium-oxygen micro-battery using liquid-cell aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combining with synchronized electrochemical measurements. The real-time and real-space characterization by time-resolved STEM reveals the electrochemical correspondence of discharge/charge overpotentials to the nucleation, growth and decomposition of Li2O2 at a constant current density. The nano-scale operando observations would enrich our knowledge on the underlying reaction mechanisms of lithium-oxygen batteries during round-trip discharging and charging and shed lights on the strategies in improving the performances of lithium-oxygen batteries by tailoring the cathodic reactions.

Project description:A comprehensive understanding of the charge/discharge behaviour of high-capacity anode active materials, e.g., Si and Li, is essential for the design and development of next-generation high-performance Li-based batteries. Here, we demonstrate the in situ scanning electron microscopy (in situ SEM) of Si anodes in a configuration analogous to actual lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with an ionic liquid (IL) that is expected to be a functional LIB electrolyte in the future. We discovered that variations in the morphology of Si active materials during charge/discharge processes is strongly dependent on their size and shape. Even the diffusion of atomic Li into Si materials can be visualized using a back-scattering electron imaging technique. The electrode reactions were successfully recorded as video clips. This in situ SEM technique can simultaneously provide useful data on, for example, morphological variations and elemental distributions, as well as electrochemical data.

Project description:Atomic-scale information is essential for understanding and designing unique structures and properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Recent developments in in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) enable research to provide abundant insights into the growth of nanomaterials. In this study, 2D MoS2 is synthesized on a suspended graphene substrate inside a TEM column through thermolysis of the ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (NH4)2MoS4 precursor at 500 °C. To avoid misinterpretation of the in situ STEM images, a deep-learning framework, DeepSTEM, is developed. The DeepSTEM framework successfully reconstructs an object function in atomic-resolution STEM imaging for accurate determination of the atomic structure and dynamic analysis. In situ STEM imaging with DeepSTEM enables observation of the edge configuration, formation, and reknitting progress of MoS2 clusters with the formation of a mirror twin boundary. The synthesized MoS2/graphene heterostructure shows various twist angles, as revealed by atomic-resolution TEM. This deep-learning framework-assisted in situ STEM imaging provides atomic information for in-depth studies on the growth and structure of 2D materials and shows the potential use of deep-learning techniques in 2D material research.

Project description:Understanding the role of macroscopic and atomic defects in the interfacial electron transfer properties of layered transition metal dichalcogenides is important in optimizing their performance in energy conversion and electronic devices. Means of determining the heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant, k, have relied on the deliberate exposure of specific electrode regions or additional surface characterization to correlate proposed active sites to voltammetric features. Few studies have investigated the electrochemical activity of surface features of layered dichalcogenides under the same experimental conditions. Herein, MoS2 flakes with well-defined features were mapped using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). At visually flat areas of MoS2, k of hexacyanoferrate(III) ([Fe(CN)6]3-) and hexacyanoferrate(II) ([Fe(CN)6]4-) was typically smaller and spanned a larger range than that of hexaammineruthenium(III) ([Ru(NH3)6]3+), congruent with the current literature. However, in contrast to previous studies, the reduction of [Fe(CN)6]3- and the oxidation of [Fe(CN)6]4- exhibited similar rate constants, attributed to the dominance of charge transfer through surface states. The comparison of SECM with optical and atomic force microscopy images revealed that while most of the flake was electroactive, edge sites associated with freshly exposed areas that include macrosteps consisting of several monolayers as well as recessed areas exhibited the highest reactivity, consistent with the reported results.

Project description:The thermal stability of funtionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been studied experimentally by direct in-situ observations using a heating stage in a transmission electron microscope, from room temperature (RT) to about 1000 °C. It was found that the thermal stability of the functionalized CNTs was significantly reduced during the in-situ heating process. Their average diameter dramatically expanded from RT to about 500 °C, and then tended to be stable until about 1000 °C. The X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis suggested that the diameter expansion was associated with coalescence of the carbon structure instead of deposition with additional foreign elements during the heating process.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have displayed great potential as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to their unique structural, mechanical, and electrical properties. The measured reversible lithium ion capacities of CNT-based anodes are considerably improved compared to the conventional graphite-based anodes. Additionally, the opened structure and enriched chirality of CNTs can help to improve the capacity and electrical transport in CNT-based LIBs. Therefore, the modification of CNTs and design of CNT structure provide strategies for improving the performance of CNT-based anodes. CNTs could also be assembled into free-standing electrodes without any binder or current collector, which will lead to increased specific energy density for the overall battery design. In this review, we discuss the mechanism of lithium ion intercalation and diffusion in CNTs, and the influence of different structures and morphologies on their performance as anode materials for LIBs.

Project description:Metallic lithium anodes are highly promising for revolutionizing current rechargeable batteries because of their ultrahigh energy density. However, the application of lithium metal batteries is considerably impeded by lithium dendrite growth. Here, a biomacromolecule matrix obtained from the natural membrane of eggshell is introduced to control lithium growth and the mechanism is motivated by how living organisms regulate the orientation of inorganic crystals in biomineralization. Specifically, cryo-electron microscopy is utilized to probe the structure of lithium at the atomic level. The dendrites growing along the preferred < 111 > crystallographic orientation are greatly suppressed in the presence of the biomacromolecule. Furthermore, the naturally soluble chemical species in the biomacromolecules can participate in the formation of solid electrolyte interphase upon cycling, thus effectively homogenizing the lithium deposition. The lithium anodes employing bioinspired design exhibit enhanced cycling capability. This work sheds light on identifying substantial challenges in lithium anodes for developing advanced batteries.

Project description:Cerium dioxide nanocubes and truncated octahedra were reduced and oxidized in the scanning transmission electron microscope. The reduction process was stimulated by the electron beam and oxidation was supported by background gases in the microscope environment. High-angle annular dark field imaging is sensitive to local lattice distortions that arise as oxygen vacancies are created and cerium cations reduce enabling high spatial resolution characterization of this process with temporal resolution on the order of seconds. Such measurements enable us to differentiate and infer that the observed behavior between the nanocubes and truncated octahedra may be due to the difference in crystallographic termination of surfaces. In situ measurements taken with different partial pressures of oxygen reveal the cerium oxidation state and the dose rate threshold for the onset of beam reduction are influenced by the environment. Increasing oxygen partial pressure reduces the Ce3+ content and decreases susceptibility to electron beam driven reduction.

Project description:The absence of centrosymmetry in chiral and polar crystal structures is the reason for many technical relevant physical properties like optical birefringence or ferroelectricity. Other chirality related properties that are actually intensively investigated are unconventional superconductivity or unusual magnetic ordering like skyrmions in materials with B20 structure. Despite the often close crystal structure - property relation, its detection is often challenging due to superposition of domains with different absolute structure e.g. chirality. Our investigations of high quality CoSi crystals with B20 structure by both complementary methods X- ray (volume sensitive) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) (surface sensitive) results the consistent assignment of the chirality and reveal fundamental differences in their sensitivity to chirality. The analysis of the surface of a CoSi crystal with domains of different chirality show the high spatial resolution of this method which opens the possibility to analyze the chirality in microstructures of technical relevant materials like thin films and catalysts.

Project description:One of the important discharge mechanisms for lithium batteries is the conversion reaction mechanism, where a metal oxide (fluoride) can decompose into metallic nanoparticles embedded in a Li2O (LiF) matrix. Here, 30% Li-doped Bi25FeO40 is successfully synthesized and displays an electrochemical discharge capacity of ∼300 mAh/g above 1.5 V (vs Li/Li+). During the electrochemical cycling process, 30% Li-doped Bi25FeO40 is decomposed into metallic Bi. During the subsequent charging process, the metallic bismuth can be first converted into an amorphous bismuth oxide phase, which contributed to the electrochemical discharge activities observed between 2 and 2.5 V. At a higher charging voltage between 3.5 and 5 V, metallic Bi can be oxidized to BiO x 2-O3-2x -, which contributes to the discharge activities observed above 2.5 V. Using graphite as current collectors can prevent the corrosion from O- species and the discharge capacity is greatly enhanced at the voltage region between 1.5 and 2.5 V. This work provides a deeper understanding over the role of oxygen ions during the conversion reaction process and is beneficial for the future design of battery systems based on the conversion reaction.
