Project description:Aluminum foam is usually used as the core of composite materials by combining it with dense materials, such as in Al foam core sandwich panels and Al-foam-filled tubes, owing to its low tensile and bending strengths. In this study, all-Al foam-filled tubes consisting of ADC12 Al-Si-Cu die-cast aluminum alloy foam and a dense A1050 commercially pure Al tube with metal bonding were fabricated by friction welding. First, it was found that the ADC12 precursor was firmly bonded throughout the inner wall of the A1050 tube without a gap between the precursor and the tube by friction welding. No deformation of the tube or foaming of the precursor was observed during the friction welding. Next, it was shown that by heat treatment of an ADC12-precursor-bonded A1050 tube, gases generated by the decomposition of the blowing agent expand the softened ADC12 to produce the ADC12 foam interior of the dense A1050 tube. A holding time during the foaming process of approximately tH = 8.5 min with a holding temperature of 948 K was found to be suitable for obtaining a sound ADC12-foam-filled A1050 tube with sufficient foaming, almost uniform pore structures over the entire specimen, and no deformation or reduction in the thickness of the tube.

Project description:The chemical industry is one of the main fossil fuel consumers, so its reliance on sustainable and renewable resources such as wind and solar energy should be increased to protect the environment. Accordingly, solar-driven thermocatalytic synthesis of octahydroquinazolinone using polyvinylchloride (PVC)-supported aluminum oxide (Al2O3) as a catalyst under natural sunlight is proposed in this work. The Al2O3/PVC catalysts were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, BET, XRD, and XPS techniques. The obtained results indicate that the yield and reaction time can be modified by adjusting the molar ratio of the catalyst. To investigate the stability of the catalyst, the spent catalyst was reused in several reactions. The results indicated that, when a 50% Al2O3 catalyst is employed in an absolute solar heat, it performs exceptionally well in terms of yield (98%) and reaction time (35 min). Furthermore, the reaction times and yield of octahydroquinazolinone derivatives with an aryl moiety were superior to those of heteroaryl. All the synthesized compounds were well characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. The current work introduces a new strategy to use solar heat for energy-efficient chemical reactions using a cost-effective, recyclable environmentally friendly PVC/Al2O3 catalyst that produces a high yield.

Project description:Herein, a detailed analysis was carried out using high-field (19.9 T) 27Al magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on three specially prepared aluminum oxide samples where the γ-, δ-, and θ-Al2O3 phases are dominantly expressed through careful control of the synthesis conditions. Specifically, two-dimensional (2D) multiquantum (MQ) MAS 27Al was used to obtain high spectral resolution, which provided a guide for analyzing quantitative 1D 27Al NMR spectra. Six aluminum sites were resolved in the 2D MQ MAS NMR spectra, and seven aluminum sites were required to fit the 1D spectra. A set of octahedral and tetrahedral peaks with well-defined quadrupolar line shapes was observed in the θ-phase dominant sample and was unambiguously assigned to the θ-Al2O3 phase. The distinct line shapes related to the θ-Al2O3 phase provided an opportunity for effectively deconvoluting the more complex spectrum obtained from the δ-Al2O3 dominant sample, allowing the peaks/quadrupolar parameters related to the δ-Al2O3 phase to be extracted. The results show that the δ-Al2O3 phase contains three distinct AlO sites and three distinct AlT sites. This detailed Al site structural information offers a powerful way of analyzing the most complex γ-Al2O3 spectrum. It is found that the γ-Al2O3 phase consists of Al sites with local structures similar to those found in the δ-Al2O3 and θ-Al2O3 phases albeit with less ordering. Spin-lattice relaxation time measurement further confirms the disordering of the lattice. Collectively, this study uniquely assigns 27Al features in transition aluminas, offering a simplified method to quantify complex mixtures of aluminum sites in transition alumina samples.

Project description:Alumina-supported Pt is one of the major industrial catalysts for light alkane dehydrogenation. This catalyst loses activity during reaction, with coke formation often considered as the reason for deactivation. As we show in this study, the amount and nature of carbon deposits do not directly correlate with the loss of activity. Rather, it is the transformation of subnanometer Pt species into larger Pt nanoparticles that appears to be responsible for the loss of catalytic activity. Surprisingly, a portion of the Sn remains atomically dispersed on the alumina surface in the spent catalyst and helps in the redispersion of the Pt. In the absence of Sn on the alumina support, the larger Pt nanoparticles formed during reaction are not redispersed during oxidative regeneration. It is known that Sn is added as a promoter in the industrial catalyst to help in achieving high propene selectivity and to minimize coke formation. This work shows that an important role of Sn is to help in the regeneration of Pt, by providing nucleation sites on the alumina surface. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy helps to provide unique insights into the operating characteristics of an industrially important catalyst by demonstrating the role of promoter elements, such as Sn, in the oxidative regeneration of Pt on γ-Al2O3.

Project description:The location of Pt nanoparticles was studied in Pt/zeolite Y/γ-Al2O3 composite catalysts prepared by H2PtCl6 ⋅ 6H2O (CPA) or Pt(NH3)4(NO3)2 (PTA) as Pt precursors. The aim of this study is to validate findings from Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) by using characterization techniques that sample larger amounts of catalyst per measurement. Quantitative X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the catalyst prepared with CPA led to a significantly higher Pt/Al atomic ratio than the catalyst prepared with PTA confirming that the 1-2 nm sized Pt nanoparticles in the former catalyst were located on the open and mesoporous γ-Al2O3 component, whereas they were located in the micropores of zeolite Y in the latter. By using infrared spectroscopy, a shift in the absorption band maximum of CO chemisorbed on Pt nanoparticles was observed, which can be attributed to a difference in electronic properties depending on the support of the Pt nanoparticles. Finally, model hydrogenation experiments were performed using β-phenylcinnamaldehyde, a reactant molecule with low diffusivity in zeolite Y micropores, resulting in a 5 times higher activity for the catalyst prepared by CPA compared to PTA. The combined use of these characterization techniques allow us to draw more robust conclusions on the ability to control the location of Pt nanoparticles by using either CPA or PTA as precursors in zeolite/γ-Al2O3 composite catalyst materials.

Project description:A novel green preparation route to prepare nano-mesoporous γ-Al2O3 from AlCl3.6H2O derived from aluminum foil waste and designated as ACFL550 is demonstrated, which showed higher surface area, larger pore volume, stronger acidity and higher surface area compared to γ-Al2O3 that is produced from the commercial AlCl3 precursor, AC550. The produced crystalline AlCl3.6H2O and Al(NO3)3.9H2O in the first stage of the preparation method were characterized by single-crystal XRD, giving two crystal structures, a trigonal (R-3c) and monoclinic (P21/c) structure, respectively. EDX analysis showed that ACFL550 had half the chlorine content (Cl%) relative to AC550, which makes ACFL550 a promising catalyst in acid-catalysed reactions. Pure and modified ACFL550 and AC550 were applied in acid-catalysed reactions, the dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether and the total methane oxidation reactions, respectively. It was found that ACFL550 showed higher catalytic activity than AC550. This work opens doors for the preparation of highly active and well-structured nano-mesoporous alumina catalysts/supports from aluminum foil waste and demonstrates its application in acid-catalysed reactions.

Project description:Strong adsorption of ketone and diketone byproducts and their fragmentation products during the aqueous phase reforming of biomass derived oxygenates is believed to be responsible for the deactivation of supported Pt catalysts. This study involves a combined experimental and theoretical approach to demonstrate the interactions of several model di/ketone poisons with Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts. Particular di/ketones were selected to reveal the effects of hydroxyl groups (acetone, hydroxyacetone), conjugation with C=C bonds (mesityl oxide), intramolecular distance between carbonyls in diketones (2,3-butanedione, 2,4-pentanedione), and length of terminal alkyl chains (3,4-hexanedione). The formation of adsorbed carbon monoxide (1900-2100 cm-1) as a decarbonylation product was probed using infrared spectroscopy and to calculate the extent of poisoning during subsequent methanol dehydrogenation based on the reduction of the ν(C≡O) band integral relative to experiments in which only methanol was dosed. Small Pt particles appeared less active in decarbonylation and were perhaps poisoned by strongly adsorbed di/ketones on undercoordinated metal sites and bulky conjugated species formed on the γ-Al2O3 support from aldol self-condensation. Larger Pt particles were more resistant to di/ketone poisoning due to higher decarbonylation activity yet still fell short of the expected yield of adsorbed CO from subsequent methanol activity. Vibrational spectra acquired using inelastic neutron scattering showed evidence for strongly binding methyl and acyl groups resulting from di/ketone decarbonylation on a Pt sponge at 250 °C. Adsorption energies and molecular configurations were obtained for di/ketones on a Pt(111) slab using density functional theory, revealing potential descriptors for predicting decarbonylation activity on highly coordinated metal sites. Calculated reaction energies suggest it is energetically favorable to reform surface methyl groups into adsorbed CO and H. However, the rate of this surface reaction is limited by a high activation barrier indicating that either improved APR catalyst designs or regeneration procedures may be necessary.

Project description:The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction is a crucial process for hydrogen production. Unfortunately, achieving high reaction rates and yields for the WGS reaction at low temperatures remains a challenge due to kinetic limitations. Here, nonthermal plasma coupled to Cu/γ-Al2O3 catalysts was employed to enable the WGS reaction at considerably lower temperatures (up to 140 °C). For comparison, thermal-catalytic WGS reactions using the same catalysts were conducted at 140-300 °C. The best performance (72.1% CO conversion and 67.4% H2 yield) was achieved using an 8 wt % Cu/γ-Al2O3 catalyst in plasma catalysis at ∼140 °C, with 8.74 MJ mol-1 energy consumption and 8.5% H2 fuel production efficiency. Notably, conventional thermal catalysis proved to be ineffective at such low temperatures. Density functional theory calculations, coupled with in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, revealed that the plasma-generated OH radicals significantly enhanced the WGS reaction by influencing both the redox and carboxyl reaction pathways.

Project description:The coking issue is the main challenge for dry reforming of methane (DRM) over Ni-based catalysts. Herein, we excavate the reasons for the enhanced coking resistance of the bounded Ni over the free state Ni in Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts for DRM. Rational metal-support interaction of the bounded Ni would facilitate desorption of CO, thus suppressing CO disproportionation and decreasing carbon deposition. The higher activity of the bounded Ni is ascribed to better methane cracking ability, stronger adsorption, and activation of CO2 by forming polydentate carbonate. The better activation of CO2 over the bounded Ni would also contribute to the gasification of formed coke. We gain an insight into the anti-coking mechanism of DRM determined by metal-support interaction in Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts through mechanistic studies. It is believed that our findings would enlighten the design of more efficient catalysts for DRM.

Project description:An efficient alkaline catalyst with a porous structure (Na-CH3ONa/γ-Al2O3) was prepared by the melting method. The wastewater from the semicoke plant (WWSCP) was extracted multiple times with isometric dimethyl carbonate (DMC)-cyclohexane mixed solvent at room temperature to obtain an organic phase (OP) with a high concentration of phenols. Ether (OPCP) was obtained by catalytic conversion of OP over catalyst Na-CH3ONa/γ-Al2O3 at 210 °C and with a reaction time of 2.5 h. Both OP and OPCP were analyzed with a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) and a quadrupole Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometer (QPEOTMS). The results showed that only DMC, phenol, o-cresol, and other monohydric phenols were detected in OP, and only other saturated ethers such as anisole and O-methylanisole were detected in OPCP. Through the study of the catalytic conversion of the WWSCP-related model compound, it was found that Na-CH3ONa/γ-Al2O3 could effectively activate (deprotonate) phenol into phenate, and the strong nucleophilic oxyanion of phenate would attack the methyl carbon and carbonyl carbon on DMC to obtain methyl and methoxy groups. Thereby, phenate can be combined with methyl and methoxy groups to acquire the product anisole. In addition, the catalyst Na-CH3ONa/γ-Al2O3 was found to still have high catalytic activity after 10 repeated cycles. It was speculated that this was related to the abundant microporous and mesoporous structure of the catalyst Na-CH3ONa/γ-Al2O3.
