Project description:A highly efficient and green strategy for the synthesis of 2-arylbenzoxazoles, 2-arylbenzimidazoles, and 2-arylbenzothiazoles catalyzed by phosphonium acidic ionic liquid has been developed via the condensation of o-aminophenol, o-phenylenediamines, and o-aminothiophenol, respectively, with aldehydes. The reaction has a good yield, the broad substrate scope, and mild condition. Triphenyl(butyl-3-sulphonyl)phosphonium toluenesulfonate catalyst was easily obtained from cheap and available starting materials through a one-pot synthesis. Its structure was identified by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 31P NMR, and FT-IR techniques. Other properties including thermal stability and acidity were determined by TGA and Hammett acidity function method. Interestingly, the catalyst can maintain its constantly outstanding performance till the fourth recovery.

Project description:The choice of a solvent and the reaction conditions often defines the overall behavior of a homogeneous catalytic system by affecting the preferred reaction mechanism and thus the activity and selectivity of the catalytic process. Here, we explore the role of solvation in the mechanism of ketone reduction using a model representative of a bifunctional Mn-diamine catalyst through density functional theory calculations in a microsolvated environment by considering explicit solvent and fully solvated ab initio molecular dynamics simulations for the key elementary steps. Our computational analysis reveals the possibility of a Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) type mechanism in this system, which does not involve the participation of the N-H moiety and the formation of a transition-metal hydride species in ketone conversion. This path was not previously considered for Mn-based metal-ligand cooperative transfer hydrogenation homogeneous catalysis. The MPV mechanism is strongly facilitated by the solvent molecules present in the reaction environment and can potentially contribute to the catalytic performance of other related catalyst systems. Calculations indicate that, despite proceeding effectively in the second coordination sphere of the transition-metal center, the MPV reaction path retains the enantioselectivity preference induced by the presence of the small chiral N,N'-dimethyl-1,2-cyclohexanediamine ligand within the catalytic Mn(I) complex.

Project description:A robust and practical polymer-supported, recyclable biphephos rhodium(I) catalyst has been developed. Control of polymer molecular weight allowed the tuning of solubility such that the polymer-supported catalyst is soluble in nonpolar solvents and not soluble in polar solvents. Thus, catalytic addition of aryl- and vinylboronic acids to enones occurs under completely homogeneous conditions and catalyst recycle can be achieved by simple precipitation and filtration.

Project description:AlCl3-loaded ZnO nanoparticles have been explored as an efficient catalyst for 1,4-dihydropyridine synthesis under ambient temperature and solvent-free conditions. For this purpose, ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple solution-based precipitation technique using a stoichiometric amount of zinc sulfate and oxalic acid. The AlCl3@ZnO nanocrystalline catalyst was prepared by loading 20% AlCl3 on ZnO nanoparticles by a simple wet-impregnation technique. This catalyst efficiently performed Hantzsch pyridine reactions with various aromatic aldehydes, ethyl acetoacetate and ammonium acetate. The nanostructured AlCl3-loaded ZnO catalyst was characterized by UV-DRS, XRD, FESEM, EDS, FETEM-STEM-EDS and XPS techniques. The comprehensive characterization reveals the formation of AlCl3-loaded ZnO catalysts with an average particle size of 70-80 nm. The loading of AlCl3 on the ZnO surface was confirmed by minor shifts in the XPS and XRD peaks. FETEM-STEM-EDS also indicates reasonable AlCl3 loading on ZnO nanoparticles. The 20% AlCl3-loaded ZnO nanocatalyst (AlCl3@ZnO) confers 92% yield for the synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridine under solvent-free and ambient temperature conditions. The synthesized 1,4-dihydropyridines were characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, HRMS and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques. The reported catalyst is highly efficient, environmentally friendly and could become an alternative to homogenous and heterogenous catalytic reactions.

Project description:One-pot green synthesis of propargylamines using ZnCl2 loaded TiO2 nanomaterial under solvent-free conditions has been effectively accomplished. The aromatic aldehydes, amines, and phenylacetylene were reacted at 100 °C in the presence of the resultant catalyst to form propargylamines. The nanocrystalline TiO2 was initially synthesized by a sol-gel method from titanium(iv) isopropoxide (TTIP) and further subjected to ZnCl2 loading by a wet impregnation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed the formation of crystalline anatase phase TiO2. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) showed the formation of agglomerated spheroid shaped particles having a size in the range of 25-45 nm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) validates cubical faceted and nanospheroid-like morphological features with clear faceted edges for the pure TiO2 sample. Surface loading of ZnCl2 on spheroid TiO2 nanoparticles is evident in the case of the ZnCl2 loaded TiO2 sample. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of Ti4+ and Zn2+ species in the ZnCl2 loaded TiO2 catalyst. Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS) spectroscopy also confirmed the existence of Ti, O, Zn and Cl elements in the nanostructured catalyst. 15% ZnCl2 loaded TiO2 afforded the highest 97% yield for 3-(1-morpholino-3-phenylprop-2-ynyl)phenol, 2-(1-morpholino-3-phenylprop-2-ynyl)phenol and 4-(1,3-diphenylprop-2-ynyl)morpholine under solvent-free and aerobic conditions. The proposed nanostructure-based heterogeneous catalytic reaction protocol is sustainable, environment-friendly and offers economic viability in terms of recyclability of the catalyst.

Project description:In this work, using layered double hydroxide (LDH) inorganic substrate, melamine as binding agent and dendrimer G1 and also pyromellitic acid (PMA) organic catalytic agent a heterogeneous acid catalyst was designed and prepared. After that, the prepared organic-inorganic catalyst was evaluated by various identification techniques such as FTIR, EDX, XRD, TGA, FESEM, and BET, and the results showed that the desired structure was successfully prepared. Also, in order to investigate the efficiency of the LDH@Me-PMA nanocatalyst as an efficient and heterogeneous catalyst, it was used for green and one-pot synthesis of 2,3-dihydro quinazoline and 3,4-dihydropyrimidinone-2-(1H)-ones derivatives. The use of LDH@Me-PMA catalyst led to the synthesis of the desired derivatives with higher efficiency and shorter reaction time than previously reported works. In addition, the prepared LDH@Me-PMA acid catalyst has the ability to be recycled and reused for 5 consecutive periods and has high stability, which is well consistent with the principles of green chemistry.

Project description:Escherichia coli cells support the nucleation and growth of ruthenium and ruthenium-palladium nanoparticles (Bio-Ru and Bio-Pd/Ru NPs). We report a method for the synthesis of these monometallic and bimetallic NPs and their application in the catalytic upgrading of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF) to 2,5 dimethylfuran (DMF). Examination using high resolution transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) and high angle annular dark field (HAADF) showed Ru NPs located mainly at the cell surface using Ru(III) alone but small intracellular Ru-NPs (size ∼1-2 nm) were visible only in cells that had been pre-"seeded" with Pd(0) (5 wt%) and loaded with equimolar Ru. Pd(0) NPs were distributed between the cytoplasm and cell surface. Cells bearing 5% Pd/5% Ru showed some co-localization of Pd and Ru but chance associations were not ruled out. Cells loaded to 5 wt% Pd/20 wt% Ru showed evidence of core-shell structures (Ru core, Pd shell). Examination of this cell surface material using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed Pd(0) and Pd(II) and Ru(IV) and Ru(III), with confirmation by analysis of bulk material using X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses. Both Bio-Ru NPs and Bio-Pd/Ru NPs were active in the conversion of 5-HMF into 2,5-DMF but commercial Ru on carbon catalyst outperformed 5 wt% bio-Ru by fourfold. While 5 wt% Pd/20 wt% Ru achieved 20% yield of DMF the performance of the 5 wt% Pd/5 wt% Ru bio-catalyst was higher and comparable to the commercial 5 wt% Ru/C catalyst in a test reaction using commercial 5-HMF (>50% selectivity). 5-HMF was prepared by thermochemical hydrolysis of starch and cellulose with solvent extraction of 5-HMF into methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF). Here, with MTHF as the reaction solvent the commercial Ru/C catalyst had little activity (100% conversion, negligible selectivity to DMF) whereas the 5 wt% Pd/5 wt% Ru bio-bimetallic gave 100% conversion and 14% selectivity to DMF from material extracted from hydrolyzates. The results indicate a potential green method for realizing increased energy potential from biomass wastes as well as showing a bio-based pathway to manufacturing a scarcely described bimetallic material.

Project description:The sugar dehydration products, furfural and 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF), are commonly formed during high-temperature processing of lignocellulose, most often in thermochemical pretreatment, liquefaction, or pyrolysis. Typically, these two aldehydes are considered major inhibitors in microbial conversion processes. Many microbes can convert these compounds to their less toxic, dead-end alcohol counterparts, furfuryl alcohol and 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfuryl alcohol. Recently, the genes responsible for aerobic catabolism of furfural and HMF were discovered in Cupriavidus basilensis HMF14 to enable complete conversion of these compounds to the TCA cycle intermediate, 2-oxo-glutarate. In this work, we engineer the robust soil microbe, Pseudomonas putida KT2440, to utilize furfural and HMF as sole carbon and energy sources via complete genomic integration of the 12 kB hmf gene cluster previously reported from Burkholderia phytofirmans. The common intermediate, 2-furoic acid, is shown to be a bottleneck for both furfural and HMF metabolism. When cultured on biomass hydrolysate containing representative amounts of furfural and HMF from dilute-acid pretreatment, the engineered strain outperforms the wild type microbe in terms of reduced lag time and enhanced growth rates due to catabolism of furfural and HMF. Overall, this study demonstrates that an approach for biological conversion of furfural and HMF, relative to the typical production of dead-end alcohols, enables both enhanced carbon conversion and substantially improves tolerance to hydrolysate inhibitors. This approach should find general utility both in emerging aerobic processes for the production of fuels and chemicals from biomass-derived sugars and in the biological conversion of high-temperature biomass streams from liquefaction or pyrolysis where furfural and HMF are much more abundant than in biomass hydrolysates from pretreatment.

Project description:Many methods have been used to synthesize xanthene derivatives using different catalysts. However, some of these methodologies have not been entirely satisfactory. Most of the mentioned methods have disadvantages such as low yields, prolonged reaction times, harsh reaction conditions and the requirement of expensive catalysis and use of toxic organic solvent. In this research, a green and highly efficient procedure for the one-pot synthesis of 1,8-dioxo-octahydro-xanthenes has been developed. Zr(HSO4)4 catalyst was used as an efficient and recoverable catalyst for synthesis of 1,8-dioxo-octahydro-xanthene derivatives via cyclocondensation of dimedone and aromatic aldehydes in solvent-free conditions. There are no examples of the use of Zr(HSO4)4 for the synthesis of 1,8-dioxo-octahydro-xanthene derivatives. The present method offers several advantages such as green, highly efficient, recoverable, reusable, simple work-up and simple purification of products. The structure of the synthesized products was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared (Ft-IR) and Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR) analyzes. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized compounds was determined by agar disk diffusion method against gram-positive (S. aureus bacteria) and gram-negative (E. coli bacteria) microorganisms. Among the synthesized compounds (3a-3j), 3h compound showed the highest antibacterial effect by forming an inhibitory diameter zone of 15 mm around the disc containing 2000 mg of 3h-compound against gram-positive (S. aureus bacteria). 1. Use of Zr(HSO4)4 as a green and highly efficient and reusable heterogeneous catalyst. 2. Under solvent-free condition. 3. Simple work-up and Simple purification of products.
