On boat: A magnificent panorama of River Basin in Tang Dynasty

ABSTRACT: Based on the framework of historical geography, this paper studies the panorama of Chinese river basin in Tang Dynasty, and attempts to reveal the connection between boat and panorama of river basin. Research uses logistic regression as method, takes 13,100 five-characters and eight-lines poems in Tang Dynasty as samples to study the influencing factors of boat. Results show that a total of 218 Chinese characters have a statistically significant effect on the factor of boat (P ≤ 0.05), including 141 risk factors and 77 protective factors. This research deepens the historical geography understanding of following nine aspects related to the “boat” in Tang Dynasty: ① waterfront regions, ② natural water systems, ③ aquatic animals & plants, ④ official travel, ⑤ fishery & commerce, ⑥ boat driving, ⑦ wonderful time, ⑧ emotion of boat trip, ⑨ daily life on boat. Highlights • Based on the framework of historical geography, the results of the study provide many new discoveries for historical geomorphology, historical economics, historical animals and plants, and historical culture.• A large number of samples and calculations enhance the credibility of the study.• This study not only validates some previous studies, but also deepens historical geography understanding of following nine aspects in Tang Dynasty: ① waterfront regions, ② natural water systems, ③ aquatic animals & plants, ④ official travel, ⑤ fishery & commerce, ⑥ boat driving, ⑦ wonderful time, ⑧ emotion of boat trip, ⑨ daily life on boat.• The research summarized the huge results and gave a full and literary interpretation.

Project description:BackgroundUrbanisation has facilitated changes in the hydrological cycle, sediment dynamics and habitat loss and it has had a tremendous impact on river ecosystems. Moreover, the invasion of non-native species reduces the number of native species with the progress of urbanisation, thereby resulting in the homogenisation of fish fauna and significant decrease in diversity. However, the effects of urbanisation on fish fauna vary depending on the region, degree of urbanisation and number of years since the construction of the city. Hence, it is necessary to collect information on how fish fauna changes due to urbanisation in different regions. The target site of the present study is the Tsurumi River, of which approximately 85% of the basin is urbanised and many of the river channels have been affected by straightening and concrete channelling. Monitoring of biota has been conducted mainly in downstream areas; however, data on fish fauna in upstream areas and tributaries of the river, which have been substantially affected by urbanisation, are lacking.New informationSurveys were conducted at 71 sites in the Tsurumi River Basin during summers and winters, focusing on river channels that have been straightened or converted to concrete channels due to urbanisation. As a result of this investigation, 10 families, 28 species and 9,335 individuals were collected. Some of the fish collected included rare species, such as Tanakialanceolata, Lefuaechigonia and Pseudobagrustokiensis, indicating that, even in rivers that have been severely impacted by human activities, there are still rare indigenous species living there, albeit in limited numbers. In addition, Misgurnus sp. (clade B2), Micropterussalmoides, Lepomismacrochirus and Poeciliareticulata were confirmed to be non-native species. Misgurnus sp. (clade B2) was widespread; however, populations of carnivorous non-native alien species were small. Project description:In recent decades, human activity coupled with climate change has led to a deterioration in the quality of surface freshwater. This has been related to an increase in the appearance of algal blooms, which can produce organic compounds that can be toxic or can affect the organoleptic characteristics of the water, such as its taste and odor. Among these latter compounds is geosmin, a metabolite produced by certain cyanobacteria that confers an earthy taste to water and which can be detected by humans at very low concentrations (nanogram per liter). The difficulty and cost of both monitoring the presence of this compound and its treatment is a problem for drinking water treatment companies, as the appearance of geosmin affects consumer confidence in the quality of the drinking water they supply. In this field study, the evaluation of four sampling sites with different physicochemical conditions located in the upper part of the Ter River basin, a Mediterranean river located in Catalonia (NE Spain), has been carried out, with the aim of identifying the main triggers of geosmin episodes. The results, obtained from 1 year of sampling, have made it possible to find out that: (i) land uses with a higher percentage of agricultural and industrial activity are related to high nutrient conditions in river water, (ii) these higher nutrient concentrations favor the development of benthic cyanobacteria, (iii) in late winter-early spring, when these cyanobacteria are subjected to both an imbalance of the dissolved inorganic nitrogen and soluble reactive phosphorus ratio, guided by a phosphorus concentration increase, and to cold-mild temperatures close to 10°C, they produce and release geosmin, and (iv) 1-2 weeks after cyanobacteria reach a high relative presence in the whole biofilm, an increase in geosmin concentration in water is observed, probably associated with the cyanobacteria detachment from cobbles and consequent cell lysis. These results could serve as a guide for drinking water treatment companies, indicating under what conditions they can expect the appearance of geosmin episodes and implement the appropriate treatment before it reaches consumers' tap.
