Project description:Der Artikel analysiert den Einzug Big Techs (der Fokus liegt auf Apple und Alphabet) in den Gesundheitsmarkt und beschreibt in Anlehnung an Michel Foucault und Shoshana Zuboff das Konzept einer „überwachungskapitalistischen Biopolitik“. Ziel ist, die Ausweitung des „Datenextraktivismus“ im Gesundheitswesen und der Gesundheitsforschung machtkritisch einzuordnen und damit einen Trend in der digitalen Gesundheitsfürsorge zu problematisieren, der sich in den letzten Jahren und, wie wir zeigen, besonders während der Coronakrise beschleunigt und ausgefächert hat. Anhand wissenschaftlicher und kommerzieller Projekte sowie Kooperationen im Bereich public health wird deutlich, dass zeitgenössische Formen der Biopolitik keineswegs auf staatliche Regime beschränkt sind. Stattdessen sind sie zunehmend über private Technologieunternehmen vermittelt, die dabei nicht nur intime Verhaltens- und Vitaldaten akkumulieren, sondern – qua proprietärer Algorithmen – auch den Zugang zu diesen kontrollieren und schließlich ihren Einfluss in exklusive Services und Produkte überführen. Ein besonderer Akzent des Artikels liegt zudem auf der voranschreitenden Verbreitung sogenannter Wearable-Technologien (Smartwatches etc.), über die sich nicht nur die herausgehobene Marktposition der Konzerne, sondern – in der Entwicklung von einem „quantifizierten Selbst“ zu einem „quantifizierten Kollektiv“ – auch ihre epistemische bzw. „infrastrukturelle Macht“ konkretisiert. Entgegen einer einseitig repressiven Perspektive auf biopolitische Praxen zeigen wir schließlich Ansätze einer Demokratisierung „überwachungskapitalistischer Biopolitik“ auf. Hierbei heben wir vier Topoi hervor, die von zentraler Bedeutung sind: Privatsphäre bzw. individuelle Souveränität, demokratische Deliberation, Pluralismus und epistemische Gleichheit.

Project description:Can international organizations (IOs) influence attitudes about regulating “Big Tech?” Recent tech sector activity engenders multiple concerns, including the appropriate use of user data and monopolistic business practices. IOs have entered the debate, advocating for increased regulations to protect digital privacy and often framing the issue as a threat to fundamental human rights. Does this advocacy matter? We hypothesize individuals that score high on measures of internationalism will respond positively to calls for increased regulation that come from IOs and INGOs. We further predict Liberals and Democrats will be more receptive to IO and NGO messaging, especially when it emphasizes human rights, while Conservatives and Republicans will be more receptive to messaging from domestic institutions that emphasize antitrust actions. To assess these arguments, we fielded a nationally-representative survey experiment in the U.S. in July 2021 that varied the source and framing of a message about the dangers posed by tech firms, then asked respondents about support for increased regulation. The average treatment effect of international sources is largest for respondents who score high on an index of internationalism and for respondents on the left of the political spectrum. Contrary to expectations, we found few significant differences across human rights and anti-trust framings. Our results suggest the ability of IOs to influence attitudes about tech regulation may be limited in an era of polarization, but that individuals who value multilateralism may still be influenced by IO campaigns. Project description:Sustainability is typically viewed as consisting of three forces, economic, social, and ecological, in tension with one another. In this paper, we address the dangers posed to societal sustainability. The concern being addressed is the very survival of societies where the rights of individuals, personal and collective freedoms, an independent judiciary and media, and democracy, despite its messiness, are highly valued. We argue that, as a result of various technological innovations, a range of dysfunctional impacts are threatening social and political stability. For instance, robotics and automation are replacing human labor and decision-making in a range of industries; search engines, monetized through advertising, have access to, and track, our interests and preferences; social media, in connecting us to one another often know more about us than we ourselves do, enabling them to profit in ways which may not coincide with our well-being; online retailers have not only acquired the ability to track and predict our buying choices, but also they can squeeze vendors based on their outsize bargaining power; and, in general, virtual technologies have changed both the way we think and our sense of self. With the rising deployment of the Internet of Things, and developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence, the threats to individual freedoms and rights, societal cohesion and harmony, employment and economic well-being, and trust in democracy are being ratcheted up. This paper lauds the benefits and addresses the harm wrought by the high tech giants in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The search for rapidly growing revenues (and shareholder returns and stock prices) drives firms to accelerate product innovation without fully investigating the entire gamut of their impacts. As greater wealth accrues to the leaders of tech firms, inequalities within firms and societies are widening, creating social tensions and political ferment. We explore the ethical nature of the challenge employing a simple utilitarian calculus, complemented by approaches rooted in rights, justice, and the common good. Various options to address the challenges posed by ICTs are considered and evaluated. We argue that regulation may do little more than slow down the damage to society, particularly since societal values and political preferences vary internationally. Firms need to establish ethical standards, imbuing the upholders of these standards with sufficient authority, while creating a culture of morality. User involvement and activism, and shareholders' concerns for the sustainability of societies on whose continued prosperity they depend, are imperative to humanity's ability to decide the future direction of technology.

Project description:The uncertainty of high technology has determined the high-risk character of high-tech projects. Thus, it is of great importance to effectively avoid the risk of high-tech projects by thoroughly analyzing projects' methodologies and fully understanding the technology prospect risk of projects in the feasibility study phase. This study proposes a systematic research framework to identify and analyze the technology prospect risk of projects based on patent analysis. Thus, text mining technology and principal component analysis are used to improve the traditional patent map method and construct a technology prospect risk map. Moreover, patent value evaluation and correlation analysis methods are combined to identify technology potential areas and calculate the value of technology prospect risk. At the same time, an empirical study is conducted with project cases in the field of optical communications, and the technology prospect risk situations of these projects are ascertained through qualitative and quantitative methods. The study is innovative and practical and offers a better combination of analysis methods for current technology development and specific projects.

Project description:(1) Background: To improve existing rehabilitation technologies, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the effect size of home-based rehabilitation using robotic, virtual reality, and game devices on physical function for stroke survivors. (2) Methods: Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, and CINAHL were used to search the randomized controlled trials that applied technologies via home-based rehabilitation, such as virtual reality, robot-assisted devices, and games. The effect size (Hedges's g) of technology type and affected limb on physical function were calculated. (3) Results: Ten studies were included. The effect size of home-based rehabilitation in virtual reality had the greatest value (Hedges's g, 0.850; 95% CI, 0.314-1.385), followed by robot-assisted devices (Hedges's g, 0.120; 95% CI, 0.003-0.017) and games (Hedges's g, -0.162; 95% CI, -0.036 to -0.534). The effect size was larger in the upper limbs (Hedges's g, 0.287; 95% CI, 0.128-0.447) than in the lower limbs (Hedges's g, -0.113; 95% CI, -0.547 to 0.321). (4) Conclusions: Virtual reality home rehabilitation was highly effective for physical function compared to other rehabilitation technologies. Interventions that consisted of a pre-structured and tailored program applied to the upper limbs were effective for physical function and psychological outcomes.

Project description:BackgroundCoronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a novel public health problem threatening the whole world. As an upshot, countrywide lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic has been supportive of changing community mobility trends of various place categories including retail and recreation, groceries and pharmacies, parks, transit stations, workplaces, and residential in India.ObjectiveTo analyze the impact of lockdown for COVID-19 on community mobility using spatial time-series change over different states and union territories (UTs) of India.Data & methodsThis study has been organized based on states & UTs wise time-series data of the daily percentage of change of community mobility from baseline in India, collected from 15th February to 30th April 2020. Conditional formatting techniques, time-series trends plotting method, spatial inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation mapping techniques have been employed to show pre and post lockdown mobility trends due to COVID-19 i.e. to fulfill the objective.ResultsAcross India, retail and recreation, grocery and pharmacy, visits to parks, transit stations, and workplaces mobility dropped by -73.4%, -51.2%, -46.3%, -66% and -56.7% respectively. Visits to residential places mobility increased by 23.8% as people mostly stayed home during the lockdown. The COVID-19 lockdown started on 24 March 2020 and just gone one day (March 25, 2020) of the beginning of lockdown, there have a decreased in percentage (-70.51% in retail and recreation mobility), (-64.26% in grocery and pharmacy mobility), (-46.17% in parks mobility), (-65.6% in transit stations mobility), (-60.03% in workplaces mobility) from baseline in compared to the pre-lockdown period and residential mobility has been increased in percentage (26.32%) from baseline due to people stayed home during the lockdown for COVID-19 pandemic in India.ConclusionStudy figures out mobility trends over time during pre-lockdown and after lockdown period across different categories of places such as retail and recreation, groceries and pharmacies, parks, transit stations, workplaces, and residential, which can be used in public health strategies to drop the spread of COVID-19.

Project description:Motivation:Despite the need for separate tools to analyze family-based data, there are only a handful of tools optimized for family-based big data compared to the number of tools available for analyzing population-based data. Results:ONETOOL implements the properties of well-known existing family data analysis tools and recently developed methods in a computationally efficient manner, and so is suitable for analyzing the vast amount of variant data available from sequencing family members, providing a rich choice of analysis methods for big data on families. Project description:Bone responds to elevated mechanical loading by increasing in mass and density. Therefore, wild animals should exhibit greater skeletal mass and density than captive conspecifics. This expectation is pertinent to testing bone functional adaptation theories and to comparative studies, which commonly use skeletal remains that combine zoo and wild-caught specimens. Conservationists are also interested in the effects of captivity on bone morphology as it may influence rewilding success. We compared trabecular bone volume fraction (BVF) between wild and captive mountain lions, cheetahs, leopards and jaguars. We found significantly greater BVF in wild than in captive felids. Effects of captivity were more marked in the humerus than in the femur. A ratio of humeral/femoral BVF was also lower in captive animals and showed a positive relationship to home range size in wild animals. Results are consistent with greater forelimb than hindlimb loading during terrestrial travel, and possibly reduced loading of the forelimb associated with lack of predatory behaviour in captive animals. Thus, captivity among felids has general effects on BVF in the postcranial skeleton and location-specific effects related to limb use. Caution should be exercised when identifying skeletal specimens for use in comparative studies and when rearing animals for conservation purposes.

Project description:The inertial measurement units (IMU) are instruments used to quantify the external load of athletes; they are increasingly common in assessing team and individual sports. This type of instruments has several sensors, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers; this allows access to a large amount of information and analysis possibilities. Due to the complexity of synthesising this data, it is necessary to create a flow for collecting, analysing and presenting the collected data in a simple way and present it as quickly as possible to the technical staff. This report aims to present new methods of reduction of the data and propose a new approach method for the analysis of the IMU's outcomes.

Project description:Deep sequencing of live-attenuated viral vaccines has focused on vaccines in current use. Here we report characterization of a discontinued live yellow fever (YF) vaccine associated with severe adverse events. The French neurotropic vaccine (FNV) strain of YF virus was derived empirically in 1930 by 260 passages of wild-type French viscerotropic virus (FVV) in mouse brain. The vaccine was administered extensively in French-speaking Africa until discontinuation in 1982, due to high rates of post-vaccination encephalitis in children. Using rare archive strains of FNV, viral RNAs were sequenced and analyzed by massively parallel, in silico methods. Diversity and specific population structures were compared in reference to the wild-type parental strain FVV, and between the vaccine strains themselves. Lower abundance of polymorphism content was observed for FNV strains relative to FVV. Although the vaccines were of lower diversity than FVV, heterogeneity between the vaccines was observed. Reversion to wild-type identity was variably observed in the FNV strains. Specific population structures were recovered from vaccines with neurotropic properties; loss of neurotropism in mice was associated with abundance of wild-type RNA populations. The analysis provides novel sequence evidence that FNV is genetically unstable, and that adaptation of FNV contributed to the neurotropic adverse phenotype.
