Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are widespread metalloenzymes which catalyse the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) to bicarbonate (HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>) and a proton, relevant in many physiological processes.
