On-chip mechanical exceptional points based on an optomechanical zipper cavity.

ABSTRACT: Exceptional points (EPs) represent a distinct type of spectral singularity in non-Hermitian systems, and intriguing physics concepts have been studied with optical EPs recently. As a system beyond photonics, the mechanical oscillators coupling with many physical systems are expected to be further exploited EPs for mechanical sensing, topology energy transfer, nonreciprocal dynamics, etc. In this study, we demonstrated on-chip mechanical EPs with a silicon optomechanical zipper cavity, wherein two near-degenerate mechanical breathing modes are coupled via a single colocalized optical mode. By tailoring the dissipative and coherent couplings between two mechanical oscillators, the spectral splitting with 1/2 order response, a distinctive feature of EP, was observed successfully. Our work provides an integrated platform for investigating the physics related to mechanical EPs on silicon chips and suggests their possible applications for ultrasensitive measurements.

High-mechanical-frequency characteristics of optomechanical crystal cavity with coupling waveguide.

Project description:Optomechanical crystals have attracted great attention recently for their ability to realize strong photon-phonon interaction in cavity optomechanical systems. By far, the operation of cavity optomechanical systems with high mechanical frequency has to employ tapered fibres or one-sided waveguides with circulators to couple the light into and out of the cavities, which hinders their on-chip applications. Here, we demonstrate larger-centre-hole nanobeam structures with on-chip transmission-coupling waveguide. The measured mechanical frequency is up to 4.47 GHz, with a high mechanical Q-factor of 1.4 × 103 in the ambient environment. The corresponding optomechanical coupling rate is calculated and measured to be 836 kHz and 1.2 MHz, respectively, while the effective mass is estimated to be 136 fg. With the transmission waveguide coupled structure and a small footprint of 3.4 μm2, this simple cavity can be directly used as functional components or integrated with other on-chip devices in future practical applications.

Experimental realization of on-chip few-photon control around exceptional points.

Project description:Non-Hermitian physical systems have attracted considerable attention in recent years for their unique properties around exceptional points (EPs), where the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the system coalesce. Phase transitions near exceptional points can lead to various interesting phenomena, such as unidirectional wave transmission. However, most of those studies are in the classical regime and whether these properties can be maintained in the quantum regime is still a subject of ongoing studies. Using a non-Hermitian on-chip superconducting quantum circuit, here we observe a phase transition and the corresponding exceptional point between the two phases. Furthermore, we demonstrate that unidirectional microwave transmission can be achieved even in the few-photon regime within the broken symmetry phase. This result holds some potential applications, such as on-chip few-photon microwave isolators. Our study reveals the possibility of exploring the fundamental physics and practical quantum devices with non-Hermitian systems based on superconducting quantum circuits.

Strong Cavity-Optomechanical Transduction of Nanopillar Motion.

Project description:Nanomechanical resonators can serve as ultrasensitive, miniaturized force probes. While vertical structures such as nanopillars are ideal for this purpose, transducing their motion is challenging. Pillar-based photonic crystals (PhCs) offer a potential solution by integrating optical transduction within the pillars. However, achieving high-quality PhCs is hindered by inefficient vertical light confinement. Here, we present a full-silicon photonic crystal cavity based on nanopillars as a platform for applications in force sensing and biosensing areas. Its unit cell consists of a silicon pillar with a larger diameter at its top portion than at the bottom, which allows vertical light confinement and an energy band gap in the near-infrared range for transverse-magnetic polarization. We experimentally demonstrate optical cavities with Q factors exceeding 103, constructed by inserting a defect within a periodic arrangement of this type of pillars. Each nanopillar naturally behaves as a nanomechanical cantilever, making the fabricated geometries excellent optomechanical (OM) photonic crystal cavities in which the mechanical motion of each nanopillar composing the cavity can be optically transduced. These geometries display enhanced mechanical properties, cost-effectiveness, integration possibilities, and scalability. They also present an alternative in front of the widely used suspended Si beam OM cavities made on silicon-on-insulator substrates.

Cavity optomechanical spring sensing of single molecules.

Project description:Label-free bio-sensing is a critical functionality underlying a variety of health- and security-related applications. Micro-/nano-photonic devices are well suited for this purpose and have emerged as promising platforms in recent years. Here we propose and demonstrate an approach that utilizes the optical spring effect in a high-Q coherent optomechanical oscillator to dramatically enhance the sensing resolution by orders of magnitude compared with conventional approaches, allowing us to detect single bovine serum albumin proteins with a molecular weight of 66 kDa at a signal-to-noise ratio of 16.8. The unique optical spring sensing approach opens up a distinctive avenue that not only enables biomolecule sensing and recognition at individual level, but is also of great promise for broad physical sensing applications that rely on sensitive detection of optical cavity resonance shift to probe external physical parameters.

Simultaneous Optical and Mechanical Sensing Based on Optomechanical Resonators.

Project description:Optical and mechanical resonators have each been abundantly employed in sensing applications, albeit following separate development. Here we show that bringing together optical and mechanical resonances in a unique sensing device significantly improves the sensor performance. To that purpose, we employ nanoscale optomechanical disk resonators that simultaneously support high quality optical and mechanical modes localized in tiny volumes, which provide extraordinary sensitivities. We perform environmental sensing, but the conclusions of our work extend to other sensing applications. First, we determine optical and mechanical responsivities to temperature and relative humidity changes. Second, by characterizing mechanical and optical frequency stabilities, we determine the corresponding limits of detection. Mechanical modes appear more sensitive to relative humidity changes, while optical modes appear more sensitive to temperature ones, reaching, respectively, 0.05% and 0.6 mK of independent resolution. We then prove that simultaneous optical and mechanical monitoring enables disentangling both effects and demonstrates 0.1% and 1 mK resolution, even considering that both parameters may change at the same time. Finally, we highlight the importance of actively tracking the optical mode when optomechanical sensor devices. Not doing so enforces tedious independent calibration, influences the device sensitivity during the experiment, and shortens the sensing range. The present work hence clarifies the requirements for the optimal operation of optomechanical sensors, which will be of importance for chemical and biological sensing.

Phonon heat transport in cavity-mediated optomechanical nanoresonators.

Project description:The understanding of heat transport in nonequilibrium thermodynamics is an important research frontier, which is crucial for implementing novel thermodynamic devices, such as heat engines and refrigerators. The convection, conduction, and radiation are the well-known basic ways to transfer thermal energy. Here, we demonstrate a different mechanism of phonon heat transport between two spatially separated nanomechanical resonators coupled by the cavity-enhanced long-range interactions. The single trajectory for thermalization and non-equilibrium dynamics is monitored in real-time. In the strong coupling regime, the instant heat flux spontaneously oscillates back and forth in the nonequilibrium steady states. The universal bound on the precision of nonequilibrium steady-state heat flux, i.e. the thermodynamic uncertainty relation, is verified in such a temperature gradient driven far-off equilibrium system. Our results give more insight into the heat transfer with nanomechanical oscillators, and provide a playground for testing fundamental theories in non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Non-Markovian quantum exceptional points.

Project description:Exceptional points (EPs) are singularities in the spectra of non-Hermitian operators where eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. Open quantum systems have recently been explored as EP testbeds due to their non-Hermitian nature. However, most studies focus on the Markovian limit, leaving a gap in understanding EPs in the non-Markovian regime. This work addresses this gap by proposing a general framework based on two numerically exact descriptions of non-Markovian dynamics: the pseudomode equation of motion (PMEOM) and the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM). The PMEOM is particularly useful due to its Lindblad-type structure, aligning with previous studies in the Markovian regime while offering deeper insights into EP identification. This framework incorporates non-Markovian effects through auxiliary degrees of freedom, enabling the discovery of additional or higher-order EPs that are inaccessible in the Markovian regime. We demonstrate the utility of this approach using the spin-boson model and linear bosonic systems.

Extremely broadband, on-chip optical nonreciprocity enabled by mimicking nonlinear anti-adiabatic quantum jumps near exceptional points.

Project description:Time-asymmetric state-evolution properties while encircling an exceptional point are presently of great interest in search of new principles for controlling atomic and optical systems. Here, we show that encircling-an-exceptional-point interactions that are essentially reciprocal in the linear interaction regime make a plausible nonlinear integrated optical device architecture highly nonreciprocal over an extremely broad spectrum. In the proposed strategy, we describe an experimentally realizable coupled-waveguide structure that supports an encircling-an-exceptional-point parametric evolution under the influence of a gain saturation nonlinearity. Using an intuitive time-dependent Hamiltonian and rigorous numerical computations, we demonstrate strictly nonreciprocal optical transmission with a forward-to-backward transmission ratio exceeding 10 dB and high forward transmission efficiency (∼100%) persisting over an extremely broad bandwidth approaching 100 THz. This predicted performance strongly encourages experimental realization of the proposed concept to establish a practical on-chip optical nonreciprocal element for ultra-short laser pulses and broadband high-density optical signal processing.

Two-dimensional optomechanical crystal cavity with high quantum cooperativity.

Project description:Optomechanical systems offer new opportunities in quantum information processing and quantum sensing. Many solid-state quantum devices operate at millikelvin temperatures-however, it has proven challenging to operate nanoscale optomechanical devices at these ultralow temperatures due to their limited thermal conductance and parasitic optical absorption. Here, we present a two-dimensional optomechanical crystal resonator capable of achieving large cooperativity C and small effective bath occupancy nb, resulting in a quantum cooperativity Ceff ≡ C/nb > 1 under continuous-wave optical driving. This is realized using a two-dimensional phononic bandgap structure to host the optomechanical cavity, simultaneously isolating the acoustic mode of interest in the bandgap while allowing heat to be removed by phonon modes outside of the bandgap. This achievement paves the way for a variety of applications requiring quantum-coherent optomechanical interactions, such as transducers capable of bi-directional conversion of quantum states between microwave frequency superconducting quantum circuits and optical photons in a fiber optic network.

Single Chip-Based Nano-Optomechanical Accelerometer Based on Subwavelength Grating Pair and Rotated Serpentine Springs.

Project description:Optical coupling between subwavelength grating pairs allows for the precise measurement of lateral or vertical displacement of grating elements and gives rise to different types of displacement and inertial sensors. In this paper, we demonstrate a design for a nano-optomechanical accelerometer based on a subwavelength grating pair that can be easily fabricated by a single Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) chip. The parameters of the subwavelength grating pair-based optical readout, including period, duty cycle, thickness of grating and metal film, and the distance of the air gap, were optimized by combining a genetic algorithm and rigorous coupled wavelength analysis (RCWA) to obtain the optimal sensitivity to the displacement of suspended grating element and the acceleration. A corresponding mechanical design was also completed to meet the highly sensitive acceleration measurement requirement while considering the mechanical cross-axis sensitivity, dynamic range, bandwidth, and fabrication feasibility. This device was verified by both RCWA and finite-different-time-domain methods, and a tolerance analysis was also completed to confirm that it is able to achieve the extremely high optical displacement sensitivity of 1.8%/nm, acceleration-displacement sensitivity of 1.56 nm/mg, and acceleration measurement sensitivity of more than 2.5%/mg, which is almost one order of magnitude higher than any reported counterparts. This work enables a single SOI-based high performance accelerometer, and provides a theoretical basis and fabrication guides for the design.
