Project description:Lower-dimensional metal halide perovskites have been recognized as an efficient white light emitter. The broad band emission spectrum originates from the recombination of excited charge carriers through free excitons (FEs), self-trapped excitons (STEs), and defect-trapped excitons. However, the emission properties of zero-dimensional (0-D) perovskites have not been explored extensively. Here, in this work, we have performed low-temperature absorbance, photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation (PLE), PL lifetime, and Raman measurements to understand the exciton relaxation processes in Cs4PbBr6 NCs. Our experimental observations indicate that two distinct UV light spectra evolved from the photoexcited carrier recombination through FE and STE states. We emphasize that such UV light sources can be beneficial for various applications, like curing of materials, disinfection of viruses, hygiene control, etc.

Project description:CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) encapsulated by Cs4PbBr6 has attracted extensive attention due to good stability and high photoluminescence (PL) emission efficiency. However, the origin of photoluminescence (PL) emission from CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 composite materials has been controversial. In this work, we prepare CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 core/shell nanoparticles and firstly study the mechanism of its photoluminescence (PL) at the single-particle level. Based on photoluminescence (PL) intensity trajectories and photon antibunching measurements, we have found that photoluminescence (PL) intensity trajectories of individual CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 core/shell NCs vary from the uniform longer periods to multiple-step intensity behaviors with increasing excitation level. Meanwhile, second-order photon correlation functions exhibit single photon emission behaviors especially at lower excitation levels. However, the PL intensity trajectories of individual Cs4PbBr6 NCs demonstrate apparent "burst-like" behaviors with very high values of g 2(0) at any excitation power. Therefore, the distinguishable emission statistics help us to elucidate whether the photoluminescence (PL) emission of CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 core/shell NCs stems from band-edge exciton recombination of CsPbBr3 NCs or intrinsic Br vacancy states of Cs4PbBr6 NCs. These findings provide key information about the origin of emission in CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 core/shell nanoparticles, which improves their utilization in the further optoelectronic applications.

Project description:Solute structure and its evolution in supersaturated aqueous solutions are key clues to understand Ostwald's step rule. Here, we measure the structural evolution of solute molecules in highly supersaturated solutions of KH2PO4 (KDP) and NH4H2PO4 (ADP) using a combination of electrostatic levitation and synchrotron X-ray scattering. The measurement reveals the existence of a solution-solution transition in KDP solution, caused by changing molecular symmetries and structural evolution of the solution with supersaturation. Moreover, we find that the molecular symmetry of H2PO4- impacts on phase selection. These findings manifest that molecular symmetry and its structural evolution can govern the crystallization pathways in aqueous solutions, explaining the microscopic origin of Ostwald's step rule.

Project description:Low-dimensional lead halide perovskites demonstrate remarkable nonlinear optical characteristics attributed to their distinctive physical structures and electronic properties. Nevertheless, the investigation into their nonlinear optical properties remains in its incipient stages. This study addresses this gap by precisely controlling solvent volumes to synthesize both 0D Cs4PbBr6 and Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 perovskites. Remarkably, as saturable absorbers, both pure Cs4PbBr6 and Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 composites exhibit favorable nonlinear optical properties within the C-band, showcasing modulation depths of 9.22% and 16.83%, respectively. Moreover, for the first time, Cs4PbBr6 and Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 composites have been successfully integrated into erbium-doped fiber lasers to realize the mode-locking operations. The utilization of the Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 composites as a saturable absorber that enables the generation of conventional soliton mode-locked laser pulses with a pulse duration of 688 fs, and a repetition frequency of 10.947 MHz at a central wavelength of 1557 nm. Cs4PbBr6 is instrumental in generating laser pulses at a frequency of 10.899 MHz, producing pulse widths of 642 fs at the central wavelength of 1531.2 nm and 1.02 ps at the central wavelength of 1565.3 nm, respectively. The findings of this investigation underscore the potential utility of 0D Cs4PbBr6 and Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 composites as promising materials for optical modulation within fiber laser applications.

Project description:We report for the first time the mass production of Cs4PbBr6 perovskite microcrystal with a Couette-Taylor flow reactor in order to enhance the efficiency of the synthesis reaction. We obtained a pure Cs4PbBr6 perovskite solid within 3 hrs that then realized a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 46%. Furthermore, the Cs4PbBr6 perovskite microcrystal is applied with red emitting K2SiF6 phosphor on a blue-emitting InGaN chip, achieving a high-performance luminescence characteristics of 9.79 lm/W, external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.9%, and correlated color temperature (CCT) of 2976 K; therefore, this perovskite is expected to be a promising candidate material for applications in optoelectronic devices.

Project description:All-inorganic lead halide perovskite, characterized by its exceptional optical and electrical properties, is burgeoning as a potential optoelectronic material. However, the standalone CsPbBr3 component encounters several challenges including small exciton binding energy (≈40 meV) and long charge diffusion length, giving rise to low photo-luminescence quantum-yield (PLQY); ion migration leads to instability in device operation, hindering device operation and potential development. To circumvent these limitations, our research endeavors to construct a novel core-shell structure that transforms the continuous [PbX6]4- octahedron into an isolated octahedral structure. We introduce the Cs4PbBr6 phase with 0D structure to passivate the vacancy defects in CsPbBr3, thereby suppressing ion migration and enhancing the luminescence intensity and stability. Our methodology involves fabricating dense CsPbBr3-Cs4PbBr6 composite films using a co-evaporation method, wherein the molar ratio of CsBr and PbBr2 is precisely adjusted. The films are subsequently rapidly annealed under ambient air conditions, and the effects of different annealing temperatures and annealing times on the CsPbBr3-Cs4PbBr6 films were investigated. Our results demonstrate significantly improved stability of the annealed films, with a mere 15% decrease in PL intensity after 100 days of storage under ambient air conditions at 48% relative humidity (RH). Based on this thin film, we fabricated all-inorganic structure Ag/N-Si/CsPbBr3-Cs4PbBr6/NiO/ITO light emitting diodes (LEDs), the devices have a low turn-on voltage VT ∼3 V and under unencapsulated, ambient air conditions, it can operate continuously for 12 hours under DC drive with only 10% attenuation. The results we obtained open up the possibility of designing and developing air-stable perovskite LEDs.

Project description:Cs4PbBr6 (0D) nanocrystals at room temperature have both been reported as nonemissive and green-emissive systems in conflicting reports, with no consensus regarding both the origin of the green emission and the emission quenching mechanism. Here, via ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, we show that the PL in these 0D metal halides is thermally quenched well below 300 K via strong electron-phonon coupling. To unravel the source of green emission reported for bulk 0D systems, we further study two previously suggested candidate green emitters: (i) a Br vacancy, which we demonstrate to present a strong thermal emission quenching at room temperature; (ii) an impurity, based on octahedral connectivity, that succeeds in suppressing nonradiative quenching via a reduced electron-phonon coupling in the corner-shared lead bromide octahedral network. These findings contribute to unveiling the mechanism behind the temperature-dependent PL in lead halide materials of different dimensionality.

Project description:Perovskite-related Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals present a "zero-dimensional" crystalline structure where adjacent [PbBr6]4- octahedra do not share any corners. We show in this work that these nanocrystals can be converted into "three-dimensional" CsPbBr3 perovskites by extraction of CsBr. This conversion drastically changes the optoelectronic properties of the nanocrystals that become highly photoluminescent. The extraction of CsBr can be achieved either by thermal annealing (physical approach) or by chemical reaction with Prussian Blue (chemical approach). The former approach can be simply carried out on a dried film without addition of any chemicals but does not yield a full transformation. Instead, reaction with Prussian Blue in solution achieves a full transformation into the perovskite phase. This transformation was also verified on the iodide counterpart (Cs4PbI6).

Project description:In this study, a newly developed setup based on laser-induced shockwave crystallization coupled with electric conductivity monitoring was employed to study the growth of crystals in supersaturated solutions and to investigate possible clustering in undersaturated solutions of potassium nitrate (KNO3). A comparison was drawn between crystals induced by laser irradiation, by shockwaves, and spontaneously in terms of crystals' mean size, shape, and size distribution. The size distribution of produced crystals by shockwaves was also characterized in terms of laser irradiation time. The results show that produced crystals by shockwaves propagation have the sharpest size distribution and the smallest mean dimensions compared to crystals grown spontaneously or by direct laser induction. Real-time monitoring of nucleation was also performed in supersaturated solutions, while decrease in conductivity was observed in undersaturated solutions as a function of laser irradiation time.

Project description:Nanocrystals of all-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) feature high absorption and efficient narrow-band emission which renders them promising for future generation of photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices. Colloidal ensembles of these nanocrystals can be conveniently prepared by chemical synthesis. However, in the case of CsPbBr3, its synthesis can also yield nanocrystals of Cs4PbBr6 and the properties of the two are easily confused. Here, we investigate in detail the optical characteristics of simultaneously synthesized green-emitting CsPbBr3 and insulating Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals. We demonstrate that, in this case, the two materials inevitably hybridize, forming nanoparticles with a spherical shape. The actual amount of these Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals and nanohybrids increases for synthesis at lower temperatures, i.e., the condition typically used for the development of perovskite CsPbBr3 nanocrystals with smaller sizes. We use state-of-the-art electron energy loss spectroscopy to characterize nanoparticles at the single object level. This method allows distinguishing between optical characteristics of a pure Cs4PbBr6 and CsPbBr3 nanocrystal and their nanohybrid. In this way, we resolve some of the recent misconceptions concerning possible visible absorption and emission of Cs4PbBr6. Our method provides detailed structural characterization, and combined with modeling, we conclusively identify the nanospheres as CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 hybrids. We show that the two phases are independent of each other's presence and merge symbiotically. Herein, the optical characteristics of the parent materials are preserved, allowing for an increased absorption in the UV due to Cs4PbBr6, accompanied by the distinctive efficient green emission resulting from CsPbBr3.
