Project description:Aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) are promising next-generation batteries systems because of their features of low cost and abundant aluminum resource. However, the inferior rate capacity and poor all-climate performance, especially the decayed capacity under low temperature, are still critical challenges toward high-specific-capacity AIBs. Herein, we report a binder-free and freestanding metal-organic framework-derived FeS2@C/carbon nanotube (FeS2@C/CNT) as a novel all-climate cathode in AIBs working under a wide temperature window between -25 and 50 °C with exceptional flexibility. The resultant cathode not only drastically suppresses the side reaction and volumetric expansion with high capacity and long-term stability but also greatly enhances the kinetic process in AIBs with remarkable rate capacity (above 151 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1) at room temperature. More importantly, to break the bottleneck of the inherently low capacity in graphitic material-based all-climate AIBs, the new hierarchical conductive composite FeS2@C/CNT highly promotes the all-climate performance and delivers as high as 117 mAh g-1 capacity even under -25 °C. The well-designed metal sulfide electrode with remarkable performance paves a new way toward all-climate and flexible AIBs.

Project description:High demand for electrochemical storage devices is increasing the need for high-performance batteries. A Zn-CO2 battery offers a promising solution for CO2 reduction as well as energy storage applications. For this study, a Zn-CO2 battery was fabricated using a Carbon Nanotube (CNT) sheet as a cathode and a Zn plate as an anode. The electrochemical activation technique was used to increase the surface area of the CNT electrode by roughly 4.5 times. Copper (Cu) as a catalyst was then deposited onto the activated CNT electrode using electrodeposition method and different Cu loadings were investigated to optimize CO2 reduction. The final assembled Zn-CO2 battery has a 1.6 V output voltage at a current density of 0.063 mA/cm2, which is higher than most devices reported in the literature. This study demonstrates the importance of activation process which enabled more catalyst loading on the cathode resulted in additional active sites for electroreduction process. This paper presents the activated CNT sheet as a promising cathode material for Zn-CO2 batteries.

Project description:Efficient electrocatalysts, with high tolerance to methanol oxidation, good stability, and acceptable cost are the main requisites for promising direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) electrode materials. This target can be achieved by the integration of different active materials with unique structures. In this work, a cobalt metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) flower structure was prepared by a hydrothermal method, and then a simple ultrasonication method was employed to anchor carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in between the MOF flower petals and fabricate a Co-MOF/CNT hybrid composite. Different ratios of CNTs were used in the composite preparations, namely 25, 50, and 75 wt% of the composite. The nanocomposites were entirely investigated using different characterization techniques, such as XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, and XPS. Comparative electrochemical measurements confirmed that due to the integration of highly conductive CNTs with the porous active fascinating structure of Co-MOF, Co-MOF/50% CNTs exhibited improved electrocatalytic activity with a current density of 35 mA cm-2 at a potential of 0.335 V and a scan rate of 50 mV s-1. The excellent electrochemical activity and stability could be due to the synergy between Co-MOF and the CNTs that conferred adequate active sites for methanol electro-oxidation and a lower equivalent series resistance, as revealed from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy study. This study opens a new avenue to decrease the utilization of platinum and increase the methanol oxidation activity using low-cost catalysts.

Project description:Developing a composite electrode containing both carbon and transition metal/metal oxide as the supercapacitor electrode can combine the merits and mitigate the shortcomings of both the components. Herein, we report a simple strategy to prepare the hybrid nanostructure of Co@Carbon and Co3O4@Carbon by pyrolysis a single MOFs precursor. Co-based MOFs (Co-BDC) nanosheets with morphology of regular parallelogram slice have been prepared by a bottom-up synthesis strategy. One-step pyrolysis of Co-BDC, produces a porous carbon layer incorporating well-dispersed Co and Co3O4 nanoparticles. The as-prepared cobalt-carbon composites exhibit the thin layer morphology and large specific surface area with hierarchical porosity. These features significantly improve the ion-accessible surface area for charge storage and shorten the ion transport length in thin dimension, thus contributing to a high specific capacitance. Improved capacitance performance was successfully realized for the asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) (Co@Carbon//Co3O4@Carbon), better than those of the symmetric supercapacitors (SSCs) based on Co@Carbon and Co3O4@Carbon materials (i.e., Co@Carbon//Co@Carbon and Co3O4@Carbon//Co3O4@Carbon). The working voltage of the ASCs can be extended to 1.5 V and show a remarkable high power capability in aqueous electrolyte. This work provides a controllable strategy for nanostructured carbon-metal and carbon-metal oxide composite electrodes from a single precursor.

Project description:Li-CO2 batteries are considered promising energy storage systems in extreme environments such as Mars; however, severe performance degradation will occur at a subzero temperature owning to the sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, a photo-energized strategy adopting sustainable solar energy in wide working temperature range Li-CO2 battery was achieved with a binder-free MoS2/carbon nanotube (CNT) photo-electrode as cathode. The unique layered structure and excellent photoelectric properties of MoS2 facilitate the abundant generation and rapid transfer of photo-excited carriers, which accelerate the CO2 reduction and Li2CO3 decomposition upon illumination. The illuminated battery at room temperature exhibited high discharge voltage of 2.95 V and mitigated charge voltage of 3.27 V, attaining superior energy efficiency of 90.2% and excellent cycling stability of over 120 cycles. Even at an extremely low temperature of - 30 °C, the battery with same electrolyte can still deliver a small polarization of 0.45 V by the photoelectric and photothermal synergistic mechanism of MoS2/CNT cathode. This work demonstrates the promising potential of the photo-energized wide working temperature range Li-CO2 battery in addressing the obstacle of charge overpotential and energy efficiency.

Project description:Owing to immense application potentials in electrochemical energy storages, metal organic framework (MOF)-derived metal oxide/carbon nanocomposites have attracted extensive interest of research. Although thermolysis has been widely employed to convert MOFs into various active materials, a large set of in situ changes in chemical composition, phase(s) and morphology requires delicate control over heating parameters. Through an innovative two-stage process, Mn-MIL-100 is first transformed into MnO@C by annealing at 700 °C under N2 flow, which is then transformed into Mn3O4@C at 200 °C in air, while retaining a high surface area. The appropriate retention of carbon content for Mn3O4@C can also be easily obtained with the control of heating time. In contrast, thermolysis of MnO@C at higher temperatures gives rise to manganese oxides with negligible carbon content and a greatly reduced surface area. The optimized Mn3O4@C-2 h, derived from MnO@C at 200 °C for 2 hours, showed the highest capacitance, far exceeding that of MnO@C and other derivatives. When combined with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets to form a flexible Mn3O4@C/rGO paper electrode, it demonstrated a capacitance of 328.4 F cm-3. The Mn3O4@C/rGO-based asymmetric supercapacitor thus assembled also shows favorable performance. The present work demonstrates the excellent controllability afforded by the innovative two-stage thermolysis in optimizing the electrochemical performance of MOF-derived active materials as electrode materials in supercapacitors.

Project description:Flexible and stretchable fiber supercapacitors have been progressively improved for wearable electronic devices. However, they should be further improved with respect to stretchable range and stable electrochemical performance during dynamic movement when considering the tensile range for wearable applications. Here, we report a quasi-solid-state circular knitted MnO2@CNT supercapacitor with high tensile range. To fabricate this, CNT fibers were knitted into a circular shape using a knitting machine then subsequently electrochemically deposited by a pseudocapacitive material, MnO2. Consequently, the knitted MnO2@CNT fiber supercapacitors were structurally 100% stretchable, and their energy storage performance remained stable during knitted capacitor stretching of up to 100%. Maximum linear capacitance and area capacitance are considerably large (321.08 mF cm-1, 511.28 mF cm-2). In addition, the supercapacitor showed negligible loss of capacitance after 10 000 repeated charge/discharge cycles and dynamic stretching cycle testing. Furthermore, we also provided double-walled knitted MnO2@CNT supercapacitors by symmetrically inserting one knitted supercapacitor into another. The double-walled supercapacitor also exhibited a stable stretchability of up to 100% without loss of capacitance. Therefore, this highly stretchable fiber-type supercapacitor could be utilized for energy storage in wearable devices.

Project description:In the present study, composites incorporating NiO-Co3O4 (NC) and CuO-NiO-Co3O4 (CNC) as active electrode materials were produced through the hydrothermal method and their performance was investigated systematically. The composition, formation, and nanocomposite structure of the fabricated material were characterized by XRD, FTIR, and UV-Vis. The FE-SEM analysis revealed the presence of rod and spherical mixed morphologies. The prepared NC and CNC samples were utilized as supercapacitor electrodes, demonstrating specific capacitances of 262 Fg-1 at a current density of 1 Ag-1. Interestingly, the CNC composite displayed a notable long-term cyclic stability 84.9%, which was observed even after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. The exceptional electrochemical properties observed can be accredited to the harmonious effects of copper oxide addition, the hollow structure, and various metal oxides. This approach holds promise for the development of supercapacitor electrodes. These findings collectively indicate that the hydrothermally synthesized NC and CNC nanocomposites exhibit potential as high-performance electrodes for supercapacitor applications.

Project description:Porous composite coatings, made of a carbon nanotube (CNT)-TiO2 core-shell structure, were synthesized by the hybrid CVD-ALD process. The resulting TiO2 shell features an anatase crystalline structure that covers uniformly the surface of the CNTs. These composite coatings were investigated as photoanodes for the photo-electrochemical (PEC) water splitting reaction. The CNT-TiO2 core-shell configuration outperforms the bare TiO2 films obtained using the same process regardless of the deposited anatase thickness. The improvement factor, exceeding 400% in photocurrent featuring a core-shell structure, was attributed to the enhancement of the interface area with the electrolyte and the electrons fast withdrawal. The estimation of the photo-electrochemically effective surface area reveals that the strong absorption properties of CNT severely limit the light penetration depth in the CNT-TiO2 system.
