Project description:Semiconductor-based photocatalysts have attracted a lot of interest due to their environmental friendliness and high stability. Waste cooking oil can be converted to biodiesel by the process of transesterification. A TiO2/g-C3N4 combination was prepared by using a wet impregnation process. The photocatalyst was analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDX), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis). For effective transesterification, WCO was collected and acid-esterified to reduce the FFA concentration (below 3%). For the transesterification reaction, esterified WCO was used and the reactions were carried out under solar irradiation at 60 °C with an oil to methanol ratio of 1 : 9 and stirred for 1 hour, using different TiO2/g-C3N4 catalysts (10, 20 & 30%) with different catalyst concentrations of 1%, 2% and 3%. The results showed that TiO2/20% g-C3N4 with 2% catalyst concentration gives the highest yield of biodiesel production (89.5%) as compared to other catalyst concentrations used. In addition to (FTIR), additional fuel characteristics such as density, viscosity, flashpoint, acid value, and pH were tested to determine the quality of the generated biodiesel and were found to comply with fuel standards. With high stability and good catalytic activity, the synthesized composite TiO2/g-C3N4 is a viable option for producing biodiesel from WCO.

Project description:At present, the types of pollutants in wastewater are more and more complicated, however, the multifunctional membrane materials are in short supply. To prepare a membrane with both high efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation performance and photocatalytic degradation performance of organic dyes, the bifunctional separation membrane was successfully prepared by electrostatic spinning technology of PVDF/PEMA and in situ deposition of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles containing Ti3+ and oxygen vacancies (Ov). The prepared composite membrane has excellent hydrophilic properties (WCA = 15.65), underwater oleophobic properties (UOCA = 156.69), and photocatalytic performance. These composite membranes have high separation efficiency and outstanding anti-fouling performance, the oil removal efficiency reaches 98.95%, and the flux recovery rate (FRR) reaches 99.19% for soybean oil-in-water emulsion. In addition, the composite membrane has outstanding photocatalytic degradation performance, with 97% and 90.2% degradation of RhB and AG-25 under UV conditions, respectively. Several oil-in-water separation and dye degradation experiments show that the PVDF composite membrane has excellent reuse performance. Based on these results, this study opens new avenues for the preparation of multifunctional reusable membranes for the water treatment field.

Project description:Developing high-efficiency hetero-catalysts for transesterification reaction is of great importance in the production of biodiesel from Jatropha curcas L. seed oil (JO). Here, we synthesized a series of sulfated TiO2 by treating with varying H2SO4 concentration (SO4 2-/TiO2) and TiO2 catalysts and applied to the transesterification of JO. Furthermore, these heterostructures were characterized by many characterization methods including XRD, FT-IR, N2-adsorption, SEM, TEM, TG, py-IR and NH3-TPD, and their catalytic performance was investigated under various operating conditions. The results reveal that both the Brønsted and Lewis acid sites are presented in the SO4 2-/TiO2 catalysts, while only Lewis-type sites are observed in the TiO2 catalyst. And the acid intensity, surface area and mesoporous volume of catalysts are improved obviously after treating TiO2 with sulfuric acid. Then the SO4 2-/TiO2 catalysts exhibit much higher catalytic activity than TiO2 catalyst, which is attributed to the larger surface area and mesoporous volume and stronger acidity. Furthermore, the reusability behaviour of 1.5 SO4 2-/TiO2 catalyst in the transesterification of JO was also studied.

Project description:In this work, we prepared advanced upconversion nanoparticle coated with TiO2 photocatalysts (NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2) to utilize not only UV energy but also the large portion of NIR energy in order to improve the utilization efficiency of solar lights. The MC-LR (10 μg/mL) degradation rate can be approached 100% within 30 min at the concentration of NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2 0.4 mg/mL and initial pH value 4, while 61%, using pure TiO2 (P25) under simulated solar lights. The reaction processes were studied and fitted with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were found to be the major reactive species. Meanwhile, seven degradation intermediates of MC-LR were examined by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry and the degradation mechanism was analyzed. The main degradation pathways were proposed based on the molecular weight of the intermediates and the reaction mechanism are hydroxylation on the diene bonds and the aromatic ring of Adda. The products were evaluated to be nontoxic based on the construction of the intermediates. This study demonstrated that the NIR energy can be used as the driving source for photocatalysis besides the UV and the NIR-responsed photocatalysis had a high-efficiency and potential for MC-LR degradation.

Project description:Herein, we report the modification of TiO2 nanostructures with two different metal chalcogenides (CuS or MoS2). The effect of the preparation scheme (hydrothermal and coprecipitation methods) and the mass ratio of metal chalcogenides were investigated. The as-synthesized photocatalyst nanocomposites were fully characterized by various techniques. Moreover, the photo/electrochemical analysis were performed to investigate the photoelectric properties and photocatalytic mechanism. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated using two test reactions. In the case of H2 generation via water splitting, it was found that 0.5 wt% CuS-TiO2 synthesized via the coprecipitation method exhibited an initial hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 2.95 mmol h-1 g-1. While, the optimized 3 wt% MoS2-TiO2 synthesized by the hydrothermal method, showed an HER of 1.7 mmol h-1 g-1. Moreover, the degradation efficiency of methylene blue dye was 98% under UV-Vis light irradiation within 2 h over 0.5 CT_PP and 3MT_HT. Under visible irradiation, the degradation efficiency was 100% and 96% for 3MT_PP and 0.5CT_HT in the presence of H2O2, respectively. This study has proven that metal chalcogenides can act as effective, stable, and low-cost bifunctional co-catalysts to enhance the overall photocatalytic performance.

Project description:The photocatalytic degradation of pollutants is an effective and sustainable way to solve environmental problems, and the key is to develop an efficient, low-cost, and stable photocatalyst. Polymeric potassium poly(heptazine imide) (K-PHI), as a new member of the carbon nitride family, is a promising candidate but is characterized by a high charge recombination rate. To solve this problem, K-PHI was in-situ composited with MXene Ti3C2-derived TiO2 to construct a type-II heterojunction. The morphology and structure of composite K-PHI/TiO2 photocatalysts were characterized via different technologies, including TEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, and UV-vis reflectance spectra. Robust heterostructures and tight interactions between the two components of the composite were verified. Furthermore, the K-PHI/TiO2 photocatalyst showed excellent activity for Rhodamine 6G removal under visible light illumination. When the weight percent of K-PHI in the original mixture of K-PHI and Ti3C2 was set to 10%, the prepared K-PHI/TiO2 composite photocatalyst shows the highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency as high as 96.3%. The electron paramagnetic resonance characterization indicated that the·OH radical is the active species accounting for the degradation of Rhodamine 6G.

Project description:The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causative agent of the COVID-19, which is a global pandemic, has infected more than 552 million people, and killed more than 6.3 million people. SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted through airborne route in addition to direct contact and droplet modes, the development of disinfectants that can be applied in working spaces without evacuating people is urgently needed. TiO2 is well known with some features of the purification, antibacterial/sterilization, making it could be developed disinfectants that can be applied in working spaces without evacuating people. Facing the severe epidemic, we expect to fully expand the application of our proposed effective approach of mechanical coating technique (MCT), which can be prepared on a large-scale fabrication of an easy-to-use TiO2/Ti photocatalyst coating, with hope to curb the epidemic. The photocatalytic inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza virus, and the photocatalytic degradation of acetaldehyde (C2H4O) and formaldehyde (CH2O) has been investigated. XRD and SEM results show that anatase TiO2 successfully coats on the surface of Ti coatings, while the crystal structure of anatase TiO2 can be increased during the following oxidation in air. The catalytic activity towards methylene blue of TiO2/Ti coating balls has been significantly enhanced by the followed oxidation in air, showing a very satisfying photocatalytic degradation of C2H4O and CH2O. Notably, the TiO2/Ti photocatalyst coating balls demonstrate a significant antiviral activity, with a decrease rate of virus reached 99.96% for influenza virus and 99.99% for SARS-CoV-2.

Project description:In this study, upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with a flower-like morphology were prepared using a urea coprecipitation method. A ternary photocatalyst was first prepared using a solvothermal method involving the use of titanium oxide (TiO2), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), and UCNPs (Y2O3, Yb3+, and Tm3+) as raw materials. The surface morphology, crystal structure, and functional groups of these materials were then characterized and analyzed through scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, and other techniques. Photocatalytic experiments were also conducted to investigate the effects of different catalyst types, raw material doping ratios, pH values, and catalyst quantities on the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The results indicated that doping with h-BN and UCNPs reduced the band gap width of RhB, increased its light absorption rate, and decreased the recombination rate of its photogenerated electrons and holes so that the photocatalytic degradation effect reached 100% within 2 h. After five experimental cycles, the 30% UC-BN-Ti photocatalyst remained highly durable and stable. To investigate the effects of different trapping agents on the degradation of RhB, benzoquinone, isopropanol, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt were used as free-radical-capturing agents. The results indicated that •O2- was the primary active species in the degradation process. Finally, the pathway and mechanism of the degradation of RhB through ternary composite photocatalysis were identified.

Project description:MOFs have considerable adsorption capacity due to their huge specific surface area. They have the characteristics of photocatalysts for their organic ligands can absorb photons and produce electrons. In this paper, the photodegradation properties of TiO2 composites loaded with UiO-66 were investigated for the first time for MO. A series of TiO2@UiO-66 composites with different contents of TiO2 were prepared by a solvothermal method. The photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) was performed using a high-pressure mercury lamp as the UV light source. The effects of TiO2 loading, catalyst dosage, pH value, and MO concentration were investigated. The results showed that the degradation of MO by TiO2@UiO-66 could reach 97.59% with the addition of only a small amount of TiO2 (5 wt%). TiO2@UiO-66 exhibited significantly enhanced photoelectron transfer capability and inhibited efficient electron-hole recombination compared to pure TiO2 in MO degradation. The composite catalyst indicated good stability and reusability when they were recycled three times, and the photocatalytic reaction efficiencies were 92.54%, 88.76%, and 86.90%. The results provide a new option to design stable, high-efficiency MOF-based photocatalysts.

Project description:A magnetic chitosan/TiO2 composite material (MCT) was developed. MCT was successfully synthesized by a one-pot method using chitosan, TiO2, and Fe3O4. The absorption equilibrium time of MCT was 40 min in absorbing vanadium(v), the optimal adsorption pH was 4, and the maximum adsorption capacity of vanadium(v) was 117.1 mg g-1. The spent MCT was applied to photocatalytic reactions for reutilization. The decolorization rates for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) by new and spent MCT were 86.4% and 94.3%, respectively. The new and spent MCT exhibited absorption bands at 397 and 455 nm, respectively, which showed that the spent MCT was red-shifted to the cyan light region. These results indicated that the forbidden band widths of the new and spent MCT were about 3.12 and 2.72 eV, respectively. The mechanism of the degradation reaction showed that the hydroxyl radicals as oxidants in the spent MCT mediated the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. In addition, the superoxide anion radical formation of hydroxyl radicals was the main reaction, and the hole generation of hydroxyl radicals was the subordinate reaction. The N-de-ethylated intermediates and organic acids were monitored by MS and HPLC.
