Project description:Accurate determination of acidity (pH) and ion activities in aqueous droplets is a major experimental and theoretical challenge for understanding and simulating atmospheric multiphase chemistry. Here, we develop a ratiometric Raman spectroscopy method to measure the equilibrium concentration of sulfate (SO42-) and bisulfate (HSO4-) in single microdroplets levitated by aerosol optical tweezers. This approach enables determination of ion activities and pH in aqueous sodium bisulfate droplets under highly supersaturated conditions. The experimental results were compared against aerosol thermodynamic model calculations in terms of simulating aerosol ion concentrations, ion activity coefficients, and pH. We found that the Extended Aerosol Inorganics Model (E-AIM) can well reproduce the experimental results. The alternative model ISORROPIA, however, exhibits substantial deviations in SO42- and HSO4- concentrations and up to a full unit of aerosol pH under acidic conditions, mainly due to discrepancies in simulating ion activity coefficients of SO42--HSO4- equilibrium. Globally, this may cause an average deviation of ISORROPIA from E-AIM by 25 and 65% in predicting SO42- and HSO4- concentrations, respectively. Our results show that it is important to determine aerosol pH and ion activities in the investigation of sulfate formation and related aqueous phase chemistry.

Project description:In comparison with the numerous studies that have centered on developing molecular frameworks for the functionalization of fluorescent materials, less research has addressed the influence of the side chains, despite such appendages contributing significantly to the properties and applications of fluorescent materials. In this work, a new series of cationic fluorescent probes with AIE characteristics have been developed, which exhibit unique sensitivity for charge-diffusion anions, namely HSO3-, via the interactions of ions and the cooperation of the controllable hydrophobicity. The impact of the alkyl chain length attached at the cationic probes suggested that the fluorescent intensity and sensitivity of the probes could be partially enhanced by adjusting their aggregation tendency through the action of the hydrophobic effect under aqueous conditions. DLS and SEM images indicated that different particle sizes and new morphologies of the probes were formed in the anion-recognition-triggered self-assembly process, which could be attributed to the composite effect of electrostatic actions, Van der Waals forces and π-π stacking.

Project description:A series of 3,6-bis-substituted-1,2,4,5-tetrazine-based colorimetric probes has been developed in good yields that exhibits highly selective and sensitive colorimetric recognition of HSO3 - in aqueous solution. The color of the solution containing colorimetric probes changed markedly from orange to colorless, upon the addition of HSO3 -. Quantification of the absorption titration analysis shows that the detection limit of 3,6-bis(2-aminoethylamino)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (2a) for HSO3 - was 3.8 μM. It was noted that 3,6-bis-substituted-1,2,4,5-tetrazine-based colorimetric probes have a specific response toward HSO3 - without interference from other 17 different anions and 16 common cations. A plausible mechanism was proposed by high-resolution mass spectroscopy analysis and NMR spectrometry analysis, involving the nucleophilic reaction of a bisulfite anion with the tetrazine ring and free radical rearrangement of ·SO3H. Moreover, probes 2a-2c possessed applicability for sensing bisulfite in actual food samples. Therefore, the present work established a novel strategy for investigating bisulfite in food or other products.

Project description:Sulfur dioxide, known as an environmental pollutant, produced during industrial productions is also a common food additive that is permitted worldwide. In living organisms, sulfur dioxide forms hydrates of sulfite (SO2·H2O), bisulfite (HSO3 -) and sulfite (SO3 2-) under physiological pH conditions; these three exist in a dynamic balance and play a role in maintaining redox balance, further participating in a wide range of physiological and pathological processes. On the basis of the differences in nucleophilicity between SO3 2- and HSO3 -, for the first time, we built a mitochondrion-targeted dual-site fluorescent probe (Mito-CDTH-CHO) based on benzopyran for the highly specific detection of SO3 2- and HSO3 - with two diverse emission channels. Mito-CDTH-CHO can discriminatively respond to the levels of HSO3 - and SO3 2-. Besides, its advantages of low cytotoxicity, superior biocompatibility and excellent mitochondrial enrichment ability contribute to the detection and observation of the distribution of sulfur dioxide derivatives in living organisms as well as allowing further studies on the physiological functions of sulfur dioxide.

Project description:The development of a fast and novel methodology to generate carbon-11 carbon monoxide ([11 C]CO) from cyclotron-produced carbon-11 carbon dioxide ([11 C]CO2 ) mediated by a fluoride-activated disilane species is described. This methodology allows up to 74 % conversion of [11 C]CO2 to [11 C]CO using commercially available reagents, readily available laboratory equipment and mild reaction conditions (room temperature). As proof of utility, radiochemically pure [carbonyl-11 C]N-benzylbenzamide was successfully synthesized from produced [11 C]CO in up to 74 % radiochemical yield (RCY) and >99 % radiochemical purity (RCP) in ≤10 min from end of [11 C]CO2 delivery.

Project description:In this study, a highly selective chemosensor ML based on a BODIPY fluorescent chromophore was synthesized for sequential recognition of Cu2+ and HSO3 - in a CH3OH/H2O (99 : 1 v/v) system, which contained three recognition sites and its structure characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and ESI-HR-MS. The sensor ML showed an obvious "on-off" fluorescence quenching response toward Cu2+ and the ML-Cu2+ complex showed an "off-on" fluorescence enhancement response toward HSO3 -. The detection limit of the sensor ML was 0.36 μM to Cu2+ and 1.4 μM to HSO3 -. In addition, the sensor ML showed a 1 : 3 binding stoichiometry to Cu2+ and the recovery rate of ML-Cu2+ complex identifying HSO3 - could be over 70%. Sensor ML showed remarkable detection ability in a pH range of 4-8.

Project description:The intrinsic relationship between the properties of green fluorescent protein (GFP) and its encapsulated small molecular light machine has spurred many biomimicking studies, aiming at revealing the detailed mechanism and further promoting its wide applications in different disciplines. However, how to build a similar confined microenvironment to mimic the cavity of a β-barrel and the fluorescence turn-on process is a fundamental challenge for both chemists and biologists. Herein, two distinct exo- and endo-functionalized tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based M12L24 nanospheres with precise distribution of anchored TPE moieties and unique photophysical properties were constructed by means of a coordination-driven self-assembly strategy. Under dilute conditions, the nanospheres fluoresce more strongly than the corresponding TPE subcomponents. Meanwhile, the endo-functionalized sphere is able to induce a higher local concentration and more restrained motion of the enclosed 24 TPE units compared with exo-functionalized counterpart and thus induces much stronger emission due to the restriction of the rotation of the pendant TPE units. The biomimetic methodology developed here represents a promising way to understand and construct artificial GFP materials on the platforms of supramolecular coordination complexes.

Project description:Measures of whole-brain activity, from techniques such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, provide a means to observe the brain's dynamical operations. However, interpretation of whole-brain dynamics has been stymied by the inherently high-dimensional structure of brain activity. The present research addresses this challenge through a series of scale transformations in the spectral, spatial, and relational domains. Instantaneous multispectral dynamics are first developed from input data via a wavelet filter bank. Voxel-level signals are then projected onto a representative set of spatially independent components. The correlation distance over the instantaneous wavelet-ICA state vectors is a graph that may be embedded onto a lower-dimensional space to assist the interpretation of state-space dynamics. Applying this procedure to a large sample of resting-state and task-active data (acquired through the Human Connectome Project), we segment the empirical state space into a continuum of stimulus-dependent brain states. Upon observing the local neighborhood of brain-states adopted subsequent to each stimulus, we may conclude that resting brain activity includes brain states that are, at times, similar to those adopted during tasks, but that are at other times distinct from task-active brain states. As task-active brain states often populate a local neighborhood, back-projection of segments of the dynamical state space onto the brain's surface reveals the patterns of brain activity that support many experimentally-defined states.
