Numerical simulation data of an elongated cavitation bubble induced by long-pulsed laser.

ABSTRACT: The simulation data presented in this paper describes the formation and growth of an elongated bubble induced by a long-pulsed laser. The simulation is performed using the M2C solver, which is a recently developed three-dimensional finite volume Navier-Stokes CFD solver. The solver is used to simulate the fluid dynamics of the liquid water, the laser radiation, the laser-induced vaporization, and the fluid dynamics of the bubble after its formation. The data presented in this paper corresponds to a representative case of the cavitation induced by a narrow Gaussian beam (cf. [1]). Simulation data include laser radiance, fluid velocity, pressure, temperature, and bubble dynamics. The input files and the workflow to perform this simulation are also provided. With the information provided in this paper, researchers can repeat this simulation, and use it as a starting point to study related problems involving laser-induced cavitation, continuous vaporization, and bubble dynamics in general.

Numerical simulation data of bubble-structure interactions in near-field underwater explosion.

Project description:The simulation data presented in this paper describes the interaction between a thin-walled aluminum cylinder and a gas bubble in a near-field underwater explosion. The simulation is performed using the AERO-F/S solvers. The finite element AERO-S solver is used to simulate the structural dynamics of the cylinder, including its yielding and collapse. The AERO-F solver is used to simulate the fluid dynamics of the explosion bubble, the surrounding liquid water, and the air inside the cylinder. The two solvers are coupled using an embedded boundary method and the FInite Volume method with Exact two-material Riemann problems (FIVER). The data presented in this paper corresponds to a representative case with initial pressure p0=12.5MPa inside the bubble (cf. [1]). Simulation data include structural stress and deformation, fluid velocity, pressure and bubble dynamics. The input files and the workflow to perform this simulation are also provided. With the information provided in this paper, researchers can repeat this simulation, and use it as a starting point to study related problems involving cavitation bubbles, underwater explosion, and fluid-structure interaction in general.

Numerical simulation of cavitation-vortex interaction mechanism in an advanced rotational hydrodynamic cavitation reactor.

Project description:Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC), a promising technology for enhancing processes, has shown distinct effectiveness and versatility in various chemical and environmental applications. The recently developed advanced rotational hydrodynamic cavitation reactors (ARHCRs), employing cavitation generation units (CGUs) to induce cavitation, have demonstrated greater suitability for industrial-scale applications than conventional devices. However, the intricate interplay between vortex and cavitation, along with its spatial-temporal evolution in the complex flow field of ARHCRs, remains inadequately elucidated. This study investigated the interaction mechanism between cavitation and vortex in a representative interaction-type ARHCR for the first time using the "simplified flow field strategy" and the Q-criterion. The findings reveal that the flow instability caused by CGUs leads to intricate helical and vortex flows, subsequently giving rise to both sheet and vortex cavitation. Subsequently, utilizing the Q-criterion, the vortex structures are identified to be concentrated inside and at CGU edges with evolution process of mergence and separation. These vortex structures directly influence the shape and dimensions of cavities, establishing a complex interaction with cavitation. Lastly, the vorticity transport equation analysis uncovered that the stretching and dilatation terms dominate the vorticity transport process. Simultaneously, the baroclinic term focuses on the vapor-liquid interface, characterized by significant alterations in density and pressure gradients. These findings contribute to a better comprehension of the cavitation-vortex interaction in ARHCRs.

GPU accelerated numerical investigation of the spherical stability of an acoustic cavitation bubble excited by dual-frequency.

Project description:The spherical stability of an acoustic cavitation bubble under dual-frequency excitation is investigated numerically. The radial dynamics is described by the Keller-Miksis equation, which is a second-order ordinary differential equation. The surface dynamics is modelled by a set of linear ordinary differential equation according to Hao and Prosperetti (1999), which takes into account the effect of vorticity by boundary layer approximation. Due to the large amount of investigated parameter combinations, the numerical computations were carried out on graphics processing units. The results showed that for bubble size between RE=2μm and 4μm, the combination of a low and a high frequency, and the combination of two close but not equal frequencies are important to prevent the bubble losing its shape stability, while reaching the chemical threshold (Rmax/RE=3) (Kalmár et al., 2020). The phase shift between harmonic components of dual-frequency excitation has no effect on the shape stability.

Micro-bubble emission boiling with the cavitation bubble blow pit.

Project description:The miniaturization boiling (micro-bubble emission boiling [MEB]) phenomenon, with a high heat removal capacity that contributes considerably to the cooling of the divertor of the nuclear fusion reactor, was discovered in the early 1980s. Extensive research on MEB has been performed since its discovery. However, the progress of the application has been delayed because the generation mechanism of MEB remains unclear. Reasons for this lack of clarity include the complexity of the phenomenon itself and the high-speed phase change phenomenon in which boiling and condensation are rapidly generated. In addition, a more advanced thermal technique is required to realize the MEB phenomenon at the laboratory scale. To the authors' knowledge, few studies have discussed the rush mechanism of subcooled liquid to the heating surface, which is critical to elucidating the mechanism behind MEB. This study used photographic images to verify that the cavitation phenomenon spreads to the inside of the superheated liquid on the heating surface and thus clarify the mechanism of MEB.

Nonequilibrium all-atom molecular dynamics simulation of the bubble cavitation and application to dissociate amyloid fibrils.

Project description:The cavitation of gas bubbles in liquids has been applied to different disciplines in life and natural sciences, and in technologies. To obtain an appropriate theoretical description of effects induced by the bubble cavitation, we develop an all-atom nonequilibrium molecular-dynamics simulation method to simulate bubbles undergoing harmonic oscillation in size. This allows us to understand the mechanism of the bubble cavitation-induced liquid shear stress on surrounding objects. The method is then employed to simulate an Aβ fibril model in the presence of bubbles, and the results show that the bubble expansion and contraction exert water pressure on the fibril. This yields to the deceleration and acceleration of the fibril kinetic energy, facilitating the conformational transition between local free energy minima, and leading to the dissociation of the fibril. Our work, which is a proof-of-concept, may open a new, efficient way to dissociate amyloid fibrils using the bubble cavitation technique, and new venues to investigate the complex phenomena associated with amyloidogenesis.

Numerical simulation and experimental investigation of bubble behaviour during pool boiling in the coiled wire.

Project description:Under the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework, an interface tracking method has been used to perform several multiple simulations of coiled wire boiling in a pool. This study includes simulations of the boiling regime, including the Critical Heat Flux (CHF), ranging from nucleate boiling to film boiling. The purpose of this research was to investigate using coiled wire to increase the rate of heat transfer under constant heat flux conditions. The range of the applied heat flux is 130-1075 kW/m2. This research delves into the formation of bubble shapes, bubble diameter, and bubble departure frequency. The vapour bubble grows in size as the heat flux increases; with a heat flux of q'' = 600 kW/m2, it reaches its maximum measured diameter of about 9 mm. Additionally, the heat transfer coefficients and wall temperature distribution were determined using the simulation findings. The heat flux was gradually increased in the critical heat flux investigation until burnout of the coiled wire was observed and a bubble layer formed. This led to the conclusion that q'' = 1075 kW/m2 represents the CHF for this particular geometry. It was observed that the CHF conditions occur in the coil portion, which emphasises the importance of considering the critical heat flux more carefully while designing this geometry.

Micro-jet formation induced by the interaction of a spherical and toroidal cavitation bubble.

Project description:We investigate experimentally and numerically the interaction between a spherical cavitation bubble and a wall-bounded toroidal cavitation bubble. We demonstrate that shock wave focusing following toroidal bubble initiation induces the formation of micro-jets that pierce the spherical bubble in the torus-axis direction away from the surface, strongest in the anti-phase scenario. The velocity of micro-jets is determined by the initial standoff distance of the spherical bubble from the wall and thus from the toroidal bubble, with peak jet velocities approaching 1000m/s. The micro-jets are triggered by the complex interaction between the torus shock wave and the surface of the spherical bubble. Additionally, the formation of secondary cavitation appears to significantly enhance the micro-jets compared to scenarios without secondary cavitation. Following the formation of micro-jets, a subsequent broad jet pierces the spherical bubble, marking the onset of its collapse. After the collapse, we observe an amplified rebound phase resulting in a more than twofold increase of the bubble volume compared to the initial bubble.

Translation of cavitation bubble near the different walls.

Project description:The interaction between spherical cavitation bubble and flat wall is transformed into that between the real bubble and imaging bubble by the method of images. Firstly, we investigate the dynamics of real bubble and matched, inversed or mis-matched imaging bubble driven by a small amplitude ultrasound, revealing the characteristics of the interaction between cavitation bubble and rigid, soft and impedance walls. Then, we emphatically study the dynamics of real bubble and mis-matched imaging bubble driven by a finite amplitude ultrasound, and the interaction characteristics between cavitation bubble and real impedance wall are revealed. The results show that the cavitation bubble is always close to the rigid wall and far away from the soft wall; For the impedance wall, whether the cavitation bubble is far away or close depends on the specific wall parameters. Moreover, the direction and magnitude of bubble's translation velocity can be changed by adjusting the driving parameters. Understanding the interaction between cavitation bubble and impedance wall is of great significance for efficient application of ultrasonic cavitation.

Unified framework for laser-induced transient bubble dynamics within microchannels.

Project description:Oscillatory flow in confined spaces is central to understanding physiological flows and rational design of synthetic periodic-actuation based micromachines. Using theory and experiments on oscillating flows generated through a laser-induced cavitation bubble, we associate the dynamic bubble size (fluid velocity) and bubble lifetime to the laser energy supplied-a control parameter in experiments. Employing different channel cross-section shapes, sizes and lengths, we demonstrate the characteristic scales for velocity, time and energy to depend solely on the channel geometry. Contrary to the generally assumed absence of instability in low Reynolds number flows ( <1000 ), we report a momentary flow distortion that originates due to the boundary layer separation near channel walls during flow deceleration. The emergence of distorted laminar states is characterized using two stages. First the conditions for the onset of instabilities is analyzed using the Reynolds number and Womersley number for oscillating flows. Second the growth and the ability of an instability to prevail is analyzed using the convective time scale of the flow. Our findings inform rational design of microsystems leveraging pulsatile flows via cavitation-powered microactuation.

Laser-induced voltage of table salt for deep ultraviolet pulsed laser detection.

Project description:To meet the requirements of fast response and simple process of deep ultraviolet (UV) pulsed laser detector, table salt (TS) was used as laser detection material in combination with a variable resistor to achieve single-pulse laser detection. Under the irradiation of a KrF excimer laser, the laser-induced voltage (LIV) of TS was influenced by the dynamic process of laser-induced plasma, and the whole process was well fitted with the sum of the three exponential functions. As the applied bias voltage (Vb) and incident laser energy (Ein) increased, the LIV amplitude (Vp) increased and the response time decreased. When the variable resistor (R) was reduced to 14.7 Ω, the response time of LIV decreased from ∼300 μs to ∼20 ns, which is the same as the duration of laser pulse. This research provided a simple, low-cost, and fast method for the detection of UV single-pulse laser based on the laser-TS interaction.
