Three recent studies of <i>Blastocystis</i> epidemiology in mammalian hosts identified four novel sequences that appeared to share <i>B. lapemi</i> as the most similar sequence. However, full-length <i>ssu</i> rRNA gene sequences were not available to confirm the validity of these new subtypes.
