The Tribe Hyrtanellini Allen, 1980 (Ephemeroptera: Ephemerellidae) of Western and Central Asia with Description of a New Species.

ABSTRACT: A new species, Serratella leonidi Martynov & Palatov, sp. nov., is described from Tajikistan based on immature stage. Based on larval material from Iran including the topotypes, Serratella elissa Jacobus, Zhou & McCafferty, 2009 is complementary described, and its generic placement is clarified. The delimitation of three genera that are members of the tribe Hyrtanellini Allen, 1980, namely Serratella Edmunds, 1959, Torleya Lestage, 1917 and Quatica Jacobus & McCafferty, 2008 is briefly discussed. The phylogenetic reconstruction of Hyrtanellini based on the COI gene showed the relations of representatives of these genera on the one hand, and distinct delimitation of Serratella leonidi sp. nov. and S. elissa on the other. A list of species from Western and Central Asia attributed to Hyrtanellini, their currently known distribution and a key for the determination of the larvae are proposed.

Project description:Cincticostellajianchuan sp. nov. from Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China, is described based on chorionic structure, nymph, and winged stages. The new species is closely related to C.fusca (Kang & Yang, 1995), but it can be distinguished in the male imago stage by its mesonotum and penes morphology, coloration, and the forking point of the stem of MA+Rs on the forewing; in the nymph stage, it can be distinguished by the length of the posterolateral projections of abdominal segment IX and the setation of the abdominal terga. Compared to other congeners, nymphs and male imagoes of the new species and C.fusca share several morphological characteristics, such as a larger body, mesothorax with medially notched anterolateral projections, forefemur without a subapical band of transverse spines of the nymphs, the area between C, Sc and R1 of the forewings distinctly pigmented, and an apical sclerite on the ventral face of the penes of the male imagoes, supporting the proposition of a new species complex, the jianchuan complex. The systematics of Cincticostella and related genera are discussed briefly.

A Review of the Genus Serratella Edmunds, 1959 in China with Description of a New Species (Ephemeroptera: Ephemerellidae).

Project description:Species in the genus Serratella Edmunds, 1959 from China have never been compared and photographed systematically. Six valid Chinese Serratella species are recognized and revised in this paper. Among them, the imagos of S. brevicauda Jacobus et al., 2009 are unknown; the nymph of this species has a stout, strong body, with remarkably short caudal filaments and maxillary palpi. In contrast, only the imago stage of Serratella fusongensis (Su and You, 1988) (=Serratella longipennis Zhou et al., 1997, syn. nov.) is known; it has relatively long penes with small dorsal projections. The nymphs of S. setigera Bajkova, 1967 have small abdominal tergal spines but distinct, stout, blunt bristles on the spines, and the apexes of the male penes are round and shallowly divided. The fourth species, S. acutiformis sp. nov., which was collected from Western China, has sharp penial apexes (imagos) and large abdominal spines (nymphs). Unlike the former four species, S. ignita (Poda, 1761) and S. zapekinae Bajkova, 1967 has sub-quadrate penes without prominent dorsal projections. The nymph of S. ignita has lateral hair-like setae on the caudal filaments, while the nymph of S. zapekinae lacks such setae but has pairs of tubercles on the head and pronotum. Some characters used in the generic delineation of the genera Ephemerella Walsh, 1862 and Serratella, such as nymphal maxillary palpi and hair-like setae on caudal filaments as well as features of the imaginal penes and forelegs, are varied in Chinese species. However, all species in this paper have bifurcate ventral lamellae of gill VI. Our work highlights a need for further comparative systematic study of the genera Serratella, Ephemerella, and another related genus Torleya Lestage, 1917.

Overview of Indian and Nepali representatives of the Cincticostella nigra (Ueno, 1928) complex (Ephemeroptera, Ephemerellidae), with discussion about Cincticostella Allen, 1971 species complexes.

Project description:The concept of the Cincticostella nigra (Uéno, 1928) (Ephemeroptera: Ephemerellidae) complex is clarified and Indian and Nepali representatives of the complex are reviewed. Four new species are described viz. Cincticostella changfai Martynov & Palatov, sp. nov., Cincticostella funki Martynov, Selvakumar, Palatov & Vasanth, sp. nov., Cincticostella shinichii Martynov & Palatov, sp. nov. and Cincticostella wangi Selvakumar, Martynov & Subramanian, sp. nov. The larva of C. corpulenta (Braasch, 1981) is re-described, based on the holotype and paratypes. Cincticostella gosei (Allen, 1975) is recorded from India for the first time. Morphological differences of the species complexes of Cincticostella Allen, 1971 are analysed. A new species complex, Cincticostella gosei complex, is proposed. Summaries of distribution data and habitat preferences, as well as new larval diagnoses, are presented for all species of the Cincticostella nigra complex.

Cincticostellaebura sp. nov., a new species of mayfly (Ephemeroptera, Ephemerellidae) from Thailand.

Project description:A new species of ephemerellid mayfly, Cincticostellaebura sp. nov., is described based on larvae collected in a stream from Nan Province, Thailand. This new species is classified in the nigra complex of the genus Cincticostella based on morphological and COI phylogeny evidence. The new species is closely related to C.nigra (Uéno, 1928) and C.funki Martynov, Selvakumar, Palatov & Vasanth, 2021 based on body colour pattern. Investigation of the chorionic structure of the new species showed similar details to those of other species within this species complex. The phylogeny also placed this species into a monophyletic group with C.nigra (Uéno, 1928), C.elongatula (McLachlan, 1875) and C.fusca Kang & Yang, 1995.

A new species of Notacanthella Jacobus & McCafferty, 2008 (Ephemeroptera, Ephemerellidae) from Yunnan, China.

Project description:Notacanthellajinwu Li & Jacobus, sp. nov. is described based on egg, nymph, and winged stages from Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. The nymph of the new species is closely related to N.commodema (Allen, 1971), whose nymphs share a similar tuberculation of head, pronotum, and mesonotum. However, the nymph of our new species can be distinguished based on the structures of male sternum IX and abdominal tergal tubercles. In addition, the new species is distributed in subtropical high-altitude areas. The description of the male imago of the new species is the first certain one for the genus Notacanthella. Data associated with our new species allow for expanded discussion and diagnosis of Notacanthella and closely related genera. An identification key for nymphs of these groups is provided.

A new species of the genus Teloganopsis with setaceous mouthparts and forelegs from southern China (Ephemeroptera, Ephemerellidae).

Project description:The nymph and reared male and female of a new ephemerellid species, which was collected from southern China and named Teloganopsis setosa Zhou, sp. n., are described. The nymph is unique because of its long and dense setae on labrum, mandibles, maxillae, labium, and forelegs as well as the elongated segments II of labial palpi and expanded paraglossae. The male can be differentiated from close relatives by its larger penis lobes with dorsolateral projections, and the more pigmented tergum IV and caudal filaments. The nymph described in this paper represents a new adaptive and ecological type in the family Ephemerellidae.

New species of Nigrobaetis from Southeast Asia (Ephemeroptera, Baetidae).

Project description:Based on larvae collected in the Philippines, Borneo (Kalimantan), Sumba, and Sumatra, the presence of the genus Nigrobaetis in the Philippines and Indonesia is reported for the first time. Six new species are described and illustrated, two from the Philippines and four from Indonesia. A larval key to all Nigrobaetis species of the Philippines, Indonesia and neighbouring continental Southeast Asia is provided, morphological differences to the species of Taiwan are discussed as well. The eggs of three new species are described, and the morphology of the eggs of Nigrobaetis is briefly discussed.

Meiotic studies in some species of tribe Cichorieae (Asteraceae) from Western Himalayas.

Project description:The present paper deals with meiotic studies in 15 species belonging to 6 genera of the tribe Cichorieae from various localities of Western Himalayas. The chromosome number has been reported for the first time in Hieracium crocatum (2n = 10) and Lactuca lessertiana (2n = 2x = 16). Further, intraspecific variability has been reported for the first time in H. umbellatum (2n = 2x = 10 and 2n = 6x = 54), Tragopogon dubius (2n = 2x = 14 and 2n = 4x = 28), and T. gracilis (2n = 2x = 14). The chromosome report of 2n = 2x = 10 in Youngia tenuifolia is made for the first time in India. Maximum numbers of the populations show laggards, chromosome stickiness, and cytomixis from early prophase to telophase-II, leading to the formation of aneuploid cells or meiocytes with double chromosome number. Such meiotic abnormalities produce unreduced pollen grains and the reduced pollen viability.

New species of Indocloeon Muller-Liebenau from South-East Asia (Ephemeroptera, Baetidae).

Project description:One new species of Indocloeon Müller-Liebenau from Brunei, I. spathasetissp. n., and one new species from Indonesia, I. timorensesp. n., are described and illustrated based on their larvae. The total number of known Indocloeon species increases from two to four and the generic attributes of the larvae are amended based on the examination of the new species. Results on the genetics of some species (COI) as well as comments on the distribution of I. indonesiae Kluge are also provided.

First report of the Afrotropical genus Securiops Jacobus, McCafferty & Gattolliat (Ephemeroptera, Baetidae) from Southeast Asia, with description of a new species.

Project description:Recent collections in Thailand revealed the occurrence of the genus Securiops in Asia, formerly known from the Afrotropical Realm only. A new species of Securiops is described and illustrated based on larvae and eggs. Eggs of this genus are described for the first time. Morphological differences between the new species and the species from Africa are discussed. The number of species in the genus Securiops is augmented to five.
