Leishmaniasis is an infectious zoonotic disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus <i>Leishmania</i>. In the Mediterranean basin, leishmaniasis is caused by <i>Leishmania infantum</i> and transmitted by bites of sandflies of the genus <i>Phlebotomus</i>, with the dog as the main reservoir host.
