ABSTRACT: Weather pattern anomalies and climate change have greatly impacted human activities and the environment in varying ways. Whether induced naturally or by anthropogenic activities, it remains a menace to global public health. A foreknowledge of the weather/climate change can help in mitigating the impact of disasters emanating from these changes. Upper-air meteorological data play an exceptionally large role in weather and climate prediction. However, there is a paucity of ground truth meteorological data in Nigeria and many parts of Africa. Consequently, the need to measure and archive these data. Internet of things and blockchain technologies are employed to build a system that captures and records meteorological data at up to 9,000 metres above sea level. Spanning between January 18, 2021 and July 26, 2021, in Uyo local government area, upper air pressure, temperature, dew point, time and the elevation at which they were captured, are the meteorological data presented in this data article.

Project description:BackgroundExposure to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) remains an important public health concern, although it remains difficult to quantify accurately across large geographic areas with sufficiently high spatial resolution. Recent epidemiologic analyses have demonstrated the importance of spatially- and temporally-resolved exposure estimates, which show larger PM-mediated health effects as compared to nearest monitor or county-specific ambient concentrations.MethodsWe developed generalized additive mixed models that describe regional and small-scale spatial and temporal gradients (and corresponding uncertainties) in monthly mass concentrations of fine (PM2.5), inhalable (PM10), and coarse mode particle mass (PM(2.5-10)) for the conterminous United States (U.S.). These models expand our previously developed models for the Northeastern and Midwestern U.S. by virtue of their larger spatial domain, their inclusion of an additional 5 years of PM data to develop predictions through 2007, and their use of refined geographic covariates for population density and point-source PM emissions. Covariate selection and model validation were performed using 10-fold cross-validation (CV).ResultsThe PM2.5 models had high predictive accuracy (CV R2=0.77 for both 1988-1998 and 1999-2007). While model performance remained strong, the predictive ability of models for PM10 (CV R2=0.58 for both 1988-1998 and 1999-2007) and PM(2.5-10) (CV R2=0.46 and 0.52 for 1988-1998 and 1999-2007, respectively) was somewhat lower. Regional variation was found in the effects of geographic and meteorological covariates. Models generally performed well in both urban and rural areas and across seasons, though predictive performance varied somewhat by region (CV R2=0.81, 0.81, 0.83, 0.72, 0.69, 0.50, and 0.60 for the Northeast, Midwest, Southeast, Southcentral, Southwest, Northwest, and Central Plains regions, respectively, for PM2.5 from 1999-2007).ConclusionsOur models provide estimates of monthly-average outdoor concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and PM(2.5-10) with high spatial resolution and low bias. Thus, these models are suitable for estimating chronic exposures of populations living in the conterminous U.S. from 1988 to 2007.

Project description:BackgroundPhysician-modified endografts and custom-manufactured devices use branched and fenestrated techniques (F/BEVAR) to repair complex aneurysms. Traditionally, many of these are deployed through a combination of upper and lower extremity access. However, with newer steerable sheaths, you can now simulate upper extremity (UEM) access from a transfemoral approach. Single-institution studies have demonstrated increased risks of access site complications and stroke when UEM access is used. This study compares outcomes after F/BEVAR in a national database between total transfemoral (TTF) access and mixed UEM access.MethodsThis study is an analysis of the Vascular Quality Initiative for all patients who underwent F/BEVAR from 2014 to 2021. Patients were stratified based on a TTF delivery of all devices versus any UEM access for deployment of target vessel stents. Primary outcomes included stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), and perioperative death. Secondary outcomes included access site hematoma, occlusion or embolization, operative time, fluoroscopy time, and technical success. Multivariable linear and logistic regression analyses were performed.ResultsThree thousand one hundred forty six patients underwent an F/BEVAR: 2,309 (73.4%) TTF and 837 (26.6%) UEM. Logistic regression analysis indicated a two-fold increased risk of death and MI and a three-fold increased risk of stroke in the UEM group. Furthermore, there is decreased operative time (221 vs. 297 min, P < 0.001) and fluoroscopy time (62 vs. 80 min, P < 0.001) in the TTF group and no difference in technical success between groups (96% vs. 97%, P = 0.159). Finally, there was a decrease in access site hematoma 2.54% vs. 4.31% (P = 0.013), access site occlusion 0.61% vs. 1.91% (P = 0.001), and extremity embolization 2.17% vs. 3.58% (P = 0.026) in the TTF versus UEM group.ConclusionsThis study using Vascular Quality Initiative data demonstrates that patients who undergo an F/BEVAR using UEM access have an increased risk of perioperative MI, death, and stroke compared to TTF access.

Project description:PurposeVernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a severe chronic allergic inflammation of the ocular surface with episodes of acute exacerbations, that primarily affects children and young adults. Although the etiology and pathogenesis of VKC remain unclear, studies have suggested that environmental factors may be involved. This study aims to investigate the association between exposure to meteorological and environmental factors and the incidence of VKC exacerbations.MethodsThis study was conducted in southern Israel, which is a semi-arid, hot, and dry climate with frequent dust storms. Patients diagnosed with VKC were recruited for the study. VKC exacerbations were identified as the need for medical intervention. Pollutants measured included nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), sulfur dioxide (SO2), relative humidity (RH), temperature, and solar radiation (SR). To assess the association between VKC exacerbations and exposure to different pollutants, a case-crossover analysis was conducted. We also stratified the analysis by sex, age, ethnicity, immigration status, and social state score.ResultsOur results demonstrated that the pollutants NO2, O3, and PM10 were associated with VKC exacerbations with odds ratio (OR) = 2.17 (95% confidence interval [CI] =1.40 to 3.04), OR = 2.28 (95% CI = 1.30 to 3.39), and OR = 1.89 (95% CI = 1.06 to 2.74). Other pollutants PM2.5, temperature, and solar radiation were also independently associated with incidence of exacerbations with OR = 1.15 (95% CI = 0.87 to 1.50), OR = 1.75 (95% CI = 1.16 to 2.65), and OR = 1.37 (95% CI = 1.01 to 1.63) and had varying effects in different demographic strata.ConclusionsThe environmental parameters, NO2, O3, PM10, PM2.5, temperature, and solar radiation were found to be significantly associated with VKC exacerbations, with NO2, O3, and PM10 showing the strongest associations. Our findings suggest that environmental factors should be considered when developing strategies to prevent and manage VKC exacerbations.
