Herringbone micromixers for particle filtration.

ABSTRACT: Herringbone micromixers are a powerful tool for introducing advection into microfluidic systems. While these mixers are typically used for mixing fluids faster than the rate of diffusion, there has been recent interest in using the device to enhance interactions between suspended particles and channel walls. We show how the common approximations applied to herringbone micromixer theory can have a significant impact on results. We show that the inclusion of gravity can greatly alter the interaction probability between suspended particles and channel walls. We also investigate the proposed impedance matching condition and the inclusion of imperfect binding using numerical methods, and investigate transient behaviors using an experimental system. These results indicate that while traditional methods, such as simple streamline analysis, remain powerful tools, it should not be considered predictive in the general case.

Particle Filtration Efficiency Testing of Sterilization Wrap Masks.

Project description:ObjectivesNon-traditional materials are used for mask construction to address personal protective equipment shortages during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Reusable masks made from surgical sterilization wrap represent such an innovative approach with social media frequently referring to them as "N95 alternatives." This material was tested for particle filtration efficiency and breathability to clarify what role they might have in infection prevention and control.MethodsA heavyweight, double layer sterilization wrap was tested when new and after 2, 4, 6, and 10 autoclave sterilizing cycles and compared with an approved N95 respirator and a surgical mask via testing procedures using a sodium chloride aerosol for N95 efficiency testing similar to 42 CFR 84.181. Pressure testing to indicate breathability was also conducted.ResultsThe particle filtration efficiency for the sterilization wrap ranged between 58% to 66%, with similar performance when new and after sterilizing cycles. The N95 respirator and surgical mask performed at 95% and 68% respectively. Pressure drops for the sterilization wrap, N95 and surgical mask were 10.4 mmH2O, 5.9 mmH2O, and 5.1 mmH2O, respectively, well below the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health limits of 35 mmH2O during initial inhalation and 25 mmH2O during initial exhalation.ConclusionsThe sterilization wrap's particle filtration efficiency is much lower than a N95 respirator, but falls within the range of a surgical mask, with acceptable breathability. Performance testing of non-traditional mask materials is crucial to determine potential protection efficacy and for correcting misinterpretation propagated through popular media.

Multi-Stage Particle Separation based on Microstructure Filtration and Dielectrophoresis.

Project description:Particle separation is important in chemical and biomedical analysis. Among all particle separation approaches, microstructure filtration which based particles size difference has turned into one of the most commonly methods. By controlling the movement of particles, dielectrophoresis has also been widely adopted in particle separation. This work presents a microfluidic device which combines the advantages of microfilters and dielectrophoresis to separate micro-particles and cells. A three-dimensional (3D) model was developed to calculate the distributions of the electric field gradient at the two filter stages. Polystyrene particles with three different sizes were separated by micropillar array structure by applying a 35-Vpp AC voltage at 10 KHz. The blocked particles were pushed off the filters under the negative dielectrophoretic force and drag force. A mixture of Haematococcus pluvialis cells and Bracteacoccus engadinensis cells with different sizes were also successfully separated by this device, which proved that the device can separate both biological samples and polystyrene particles.

Localization in semi-infinite herringbone waveguides.

Project description:The paper includes novel results for the scattering and localization of a time-harmonic flexural wave by a semi-infinite herringbone waveguide of rigid pins embedded within an elastic Kirchhoff plate. The analytical model takes into account the orientation and spacing of the constituent parts of the herringbone system, and incorporates dipole approximations for the case of closely spaced pins. Illustrative examples are provided, together with the predictive theoretical analysis of the localized waveforms.

Enhanced Aerosol Particle Filtration Efficiency of Nonwoven Porous Cellulose Triacetate Nanofiber Mats.

Project description:Aerosol particle filtration in most penetrating particle size (MPPS) region is of great challenge for conventional nonwoven filter mats. The present work, therefore, redesigns conventional filter mats by introducing porous structure. A combination of thermally induced phase separation and breath figure mechanism was employed to synthesize porous cellulose triacetate fibers, in conjunction with the volatile solvent methylene chloride. The ambient humidity, the concentration of the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) secondary polymer, and the ethanol cosolvent were all adjusted to modify the Taylor cone formation, jet stability, and fiber porosity. After fiber formation, the PVP was removed to obtain a superhydrophobic material. To distinguish the effect of pores, the performance of porous and nonporous nanofibers having similar sizes was conducted. Tests were performed using various dust particle sizes, and the results show that the collection efficiency of the porous fibers, resulting from particle diffusion, inertial impaction, and interception, was improved. Interestingly, the efficiency of the porous fibers in the MPPS region was exceptionally enhanced (up to 95%), demonstrating that the presence of dynamic pores greatly contributes to particle capture.

Microfluidic model systems used to emulate processes occurring during soft particle filtration.

Project description:Cake layer formation in membrane processes is an inevitable phenomenon. For hard particles, especially cake porosity and thickness determine the membrane flux, but when the particles forming the cake are soft, the variables one has to take into account in the prediction of cake behavior increase considerably. In this work we investigate the behavior of soft polyacrylamide microgels in microfluidic model membranes through optical microscopy for in situ observation both under regular flow and under enhanced gravity conditions. Particles larger than the pore are able to pass through deformation and deswelling. We find that membrane clogging time and cake formation is not dependent on the applied pressure but rather on particle and membrane pore properties. Furthermore, we found that particle deposits subjected to low pressures and low g forces deform in a totally reversible fashion. Particle deposits subjected to higher pressures only deform reversibly if they can re-swell due to capillary forces, otherwise irreversible compression is observed. For membrane processes this implies that when using deformable particles, the pore size is not a good indicator for membrane performance, and cake formation can have much more severe consequences compared to hard particles due to the sometimes-irreversible nature of soft particle compression.

Continuous Nanoprecipitation of Polycaprolactone in Additively Manufactured Micromixers.

Project description:The polymeric ouzo effect is an energy-efficient and robust method to create nanoparticles with biologically degradable polymers. Usually, a discontinuous or semi-continuous process is employed due to its low technical effort and the fact that the amount of dispersions needed in a laboratory is relatively small. However, the number of particles produced in this method is not enough to make this process economically feasible. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the productivity of the process and create a controllable and robust continuous process with the potential to control parameters, such as the particle size or surface properties. In this study, nanoparticles were formulated from polycaprolactone (PCL) in a continuous process using additively manufactured micromixers. The main goal was to be able to exert control on the particle parameters in terms of size and zeta potential. The results showed that particle size could be adjusted in the range of 130 to 465 nm by using different flow rates of the organic and aqueous phase and varying concentrations of PCL dissolved in the organic phase. Particle surface charge was successfully shifted from a slightly negative potential of -14.1 mV to a negative, positive, or neutral value applying the appropriate surfactant. In summary, a continuous process of nanoprecipitation not only improves the cost of the method, but furthermore increases the control over the particle's parameters.

Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) for Manufacturing of Microfluidic Micromixers: An Experimental Study on the Effect of Process Variables in Printed Microfluidic Micromixers.

Project description:The need for accessible and inexpensive microfluidic devices requires new manufacturing methods and materials as a replacement for traditional soft lithography and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Recently, with the advent of modern additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, 3D printing has attracted attention for its use in the fabrication of microfluidic devices and due to its automated, assembly-free 3D fabrication, rapidly decreasing cost, and fast-improving resolution and throughput. Here, fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing was used to create microfluidic micromixers and enhance the mixing process, which has been identified as a challenge in microfluidic devices. A design of experiment (DoE) was performed on the effects of studied parameters in devices that were printed by FFF. The results of the colorimetric approach showed the effects of different parameters on the mixing process and on the enhancement of the mixing performance in printed devices. The presence of the geometrical features on the microchannels can act as ridges due to the nature of the FFF process. In comparison to passive and active methods, no complexity was added in the fabrication process, and the ridges are an inherent property of the FFF process.

High-throughput particle separation and concentration using spiral inertial filtration.

Project description:A spiral inertial filtration (SIFT) device that is capable of high-throughput (1 ml/min), high-purity particle separation while concentrating recovered target particles by more than an order of magnitude is reported. This device is able to remove large fractions of sample fluid from a microchannel without disruption of concentrated particle streams by taking advantage of particle focusing in inertial spiral microfluidics, which is achieved by balancing inertial lift forces and Dean drag forces. To enable the calculation of channel geometries in the SIFT microsystem for specific concentration factors, an equivalent circuit model was developed and experimentally validated. Large particle concentration factors were then achieved by maintaining either the average fluid velocity or the Dean number throughout the entire length of the channel during the incremental removal of sample fluid. The SIFT device was able to separate MCF7 cells spiked into whole blood from the non-target white blood cells (WBC) with a recovery of nearly 100% while removing 93% of the sample volume, which resulted in a concentration enhancement of the MCF7 cancer cells by a factor of 14.

Quantification of Particle Filtration Using a Quartz Crystal Microbalance Embedded in a Microfluidic Channel.

Project description:To quantify colloidal filtration, a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) with a silicon dioxide surface is embedded on the inner surface of a microfluidic channel to monitor the real-time particle deposition. Potassium chloride solution with micrometer-size polystyrene particles simulating bacterial strains flows down the channel. In the presence of intrinsic Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) intersurface forces, particles are trapped by the quartz surfaces, and the increased mass shifts the QCM resonance frequency. The method provides an alternative way to measure filtration efficiency in an optically opaque channel and its dependence on the ionic concentration.
