Project description:Inorganic nanotubes are morphological counterparts of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Yet, only graphene-like BN layer has been readily organized into single walled nanotubes so far. In this study, we present a simple route to obtain inorganic single walled nanotubes - a novel ultrathin morphology for bismuth iodide (BiI3), embedded within CNTs. The synthesis involves the capillary filling of BiI3 into CNT, which acts as a nanotemplate, by annealing the BiI3-CNT mixture above the melting point of BiI3. Aberration corrected scanning/transmission electron microscopy is used in characterizing the novel morphology of BiI3. A critical diameter which enables the formation of BiI3 nanotubes, against BiI3 nanorods is identified. The relative stability of these phases is investigated with the density functional theory calculations. Remarkably, the calculations reveal that the single walled BiI3 nanotubes are semiconductors with a direct band gap, which remain stable even without the host CNTs.

Project description:This article is devoted to the investigation of the sensing behavior of chemically treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) at room temperature. Chemical treatment of MWNTs was carried out with a solution of either sulfuric or chromic acids. The materials obtained were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman-spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The active layer of chemiresistive gas sensors was obtained by cold pressing (compaction) at 11 MPa of powders of bare and treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The sensing properties of pellets were investigated using a custom dynamic type of station at room temperature (25 ± 2 °C). Detection of NO2 was performed in synthetic air (79 vol% N2, 21 vol% O2). It was found that the chemical treatment significantly affects the sensing properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, which is indicated by increasing the response of the sensors toward 100-500 ppm NO2 and lower concentrations.

Project description:Individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with distinct electronic types are crucial for the fabrication of SWNTs-based electronic and magnetic devices. Herein, the water-soluble polymethyl(1-butyric acidyl)silane (BA-PMS) was synthesized via the hydrosilylation reaction between 3-butenoic acid and polymethylsilane catalyzed by 2,2'-azodibutyronitrile. As a new dispersant, BA-PMS displayed a quite good dispersing capacity to arc-discharged SWNTs and moderate selectivity for metallic species. The application of sucrose-DGU, the density gradient ultracentrifugation with sucrose as the gradient medium, to the co-surfactants (BA-PMS and sodium dodecyl sulfonate) individually dispersed SWNTs yielded metallic SWNTs of 85.6% purity and semiconducting SWNTs of 99% purity, respectively. This work paves a path to the DGU separation of the SWNTs dispersed by polymer-based dispersants with hydrophobic alkyl chains.

Project description:With the rapidly growing applications, efficient purification of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) has become one of the key problems. This paper proposes Freon-CO2-assisted purification of SWCNTs, where CO2 can oxidize the graphitized carbon layer to expose iron (Fe) impurities, while the chlorine from Freon can react with the Fe impurities to form low-boiling-point metal chlorides that can be eliminated in a gas stream. After an acid washing with a very small amount of hydrochloric acid, the last remaining metal impurities are removed and highly pure SWCNTs are produced. Compared with traditional strong-acid-oxidation purification or high-temperature-vacuum purification, this method can maintain the structure and length of the SWCNTs. Raman spectra show that an I G/I D ratio of more than 100 can be obtained. This purification method can maintain the microstructure and excellent properties of SWCNTs and provide a solution for the preparation of high-quality SWCNTs to exert their properties.

Project description:We used a grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation to study the influence of impurities including water vapor, SO2, and O2 in the flue gas on the adsorption of CO2/N2 mixture in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carboxyl doped CNT arrays. In the presence of single impure gas, SO2 yielded the most inhibitions on CO2 adsorption, while the influence of water only occurred at low pressure limit (0.1 bar), where a one-dimensional chain of hydrogen-bonded molecules was formed. Further, O2 was found to hardly affect the adsorption and separation of CO2. With three impurities in flue gas, SO2 still played a major role to suppress the adsorption of CO2 by reducing the adsorption amount significantly. This was mainly because SO2 had a stronger interaction with carbon walls in comparison with CO2. The presence of three impurities in flue gas enhanced the adsorption complexity due to the interactions between different species. Modified by hydrophilic carboxyl groups, a large amount of H2O occupied the adsorption space outside the tube in the carbon nanotube arrays, and SO2 produced competitive adsorption for CO2 in the tube. Both of the two effects inhibited the adsorption of CO2, but improved the selectivity of CO2/N2, and the competition between the two determined the adsorption distribution of CO2 inside and outside the tube. In addition, it was found that (7, 7) CNT always maintained the best CO2/N2 adsorption and separation performance in the presence of impurity gas, for both the cases of single CNT and CNT array.

Project description:Long carbon nanotubes (CNTs) resemble asbestos fibers due to their high length to diameter ratio and they thus have genotoxic effects. Another parameter that might explain their genotoxic effects is contamination with heavy metal ions. On the other hand, short (1-2 µm) CNTs do not resemble asbestos fibers, and, once purified from contaminations, they might be suitable for medical applications. To identify the role of fiber thickness and surface properties on genotoxicity, well-characterized short pristine and carboxylated single-walled (SCNTs) and multi-walled (MCNTs) CNTs of different diameters were studied for cytotoxicity, the cell's response to oxidative stress (immunoreactivity against hemoxygenase 1 and glutathione levels), and in a hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) assay using V79 chinese hamster fibroblasts and human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells. DNA repair was demonstrated by measuring immunoreactivity against activated histone H2AX protein. The number of micronuclei as well as the number of multinucleated cells was determined. CNTs acted more cytotoxic in V79 than in A549 cells. Plain and carboxylated thin (<8 nm) SCNTs and MCNTs showed greater cytotoxic potential and carboxylated CNTs showed indication for generating oxidative stress. Multi-walled CNTs did not cause HPRT mutation, micronucleus formation, DNA damage, interference with cell division, and oxidative stress. Carboxylated, but not plain, SCNTs showed indication for in vitro DNA damage according to increase of H2AX-immunoreactive cells and HPRT mutation. Although short CNTs presented a low in vitro genotoxicity, functionalization of short SCNTs can render these particles genotoxic.

Project description:Mechanically interlocked derivatives of carbon nanotubes (MINTs) are interesting nanotube products since they show high stability without altering the carbon nanotube structure. So far, MINTs have been synthesized using ring-closing metathesis, disulfide exchange reaction, H-bonding or direct threading with macrocycles. Here, we describe the encapsulation of single-walled carbon nanotubes within a palladium-based metallosquare. The formation of MINTs was confirmed by a variety of techniques, including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. We find the making of these MINTs is remarkably sensitive to structural variations of the metallo-assemblies. When a metallosquare with a cavity of appropriate shape and size is used, the formation of the MINT proceeds successfully by both templated clipping and direct threading. Our studies also show indications on how supramolecular coordination complexes can help expand the potential applications of MINTs.

Project description:The single-walled nanotube (SWNT) is an interesting nanostructure for fundamental research and potential applications. However, very few inorganic SWNTs are available to date due to the lack of efficient fabrication methods. Here we synthesize four types of SWNT: sulfide; hydroxide; phosphate; and polyoxometalate. Each type of SWNT possesses essentially uniform diameters. Detailed studies illustrate that the formation of SWNTs is initiated by the self-coiling of the corresponding ultrathin nanostructure embryo/building blocks on the base of weak interactions between them, which is not limited to specific compounds or crystal structures. The interactions between building blocks can be modulated by varying the solvents used, thus multi-walled tubes can also be obtained. Our results reveal that the generalized synthesis of inorganic SWNTs can be achieved by the self-coiling of ultrathin building blocks under the proper weak interactions.

Project description:While several approaches have been developed for sorting metallic (m) or semiconducting (s) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), the length of SWCNTs is limited within a micrometer, which restricts excellent electrical performances of SWCNTs for macro-scale applications. Here, we demonstrate a simple sorting method of centimetre-long aligned m- and s-SWCNTs. Ni particles were selectively and uniformly coated along the 1-cm-long m-SWCNTs by applying positive gate bias during electrochemical deposition with continuous electrolyte injection. To sort s-SWCNTs, the Ni coating was oxidized to form insulator outer for blocking of current flow through inner m-SWCNTs. Sorting of m-SWCNTs were demonstrated by selective etching of s-SWCNTs via oxygen plasma, while the protected m-SWCNTs by Ni coating remained intact. The series of source-drain pairs were patterned along the 1-cm-long sorted SWCNTs, which confirmed high on/off ratio of 10(4)-10(8) for s-SWCNTs and nearly 1 for m-SWCNTs.

Project description:HF, CS2, and COF2 are three important decomposition components of the SF6 gas insulation medium. In this paper, the gas sensitivity of Pt doped on (8, 0) single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) to HF, CS2, and COF2 is investigated based on density functional theory. The binding energy, charge transfer, density of states, and frontier molecular orbital theory are discussed. It is found that all processes of HF, CS2, and COF2 adsorbed on Pt-SWCNT are exothermic. Pt-SWCNT donated 0.182 electrons to CS2 molecules during the interaction process but acts as an electron acceptor during adsorption of HF and COF2 on it. After comprehensive consideration of binding energy and charge transfer, the response of Pt- SWCNT to CS2 may be the best, and those to HF and COF2 are almost the same. In addition, after the adsorption of the three kinds of gases on Pt-SWCNT, the order of the conductivity of the Pt-SWCNT material is CS2 > COF2 ≈ HF via frontier molecular orbital theory analysis. The Pt-SWCNT material is probably more suitable as a gas sensor for the detection of CS2 in the application of gas-insulated equipment.
