Mitochondrial genome of Leocrates chinensis Kinberg, 1866 (Annelida: Hesionidae).

ABSTRACT: We report the complete mitochondrial genome of Leocrates chinensis Kinberg, 1866 - the type species of the genus. It is 15061 bp long, and contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes (tRNAs), and 2 rRNA genes (rRNAs), and 1 putative control region. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that L. chinensis was placed as sister to Sirsoe methanicola (BS = 100) of the same family Hesionidae.

Project description:Podarkeopsischinensissp. nov. (Annelida, Hesionidae) is described based on specimens collected from the coast of southeast China. It is the first Podarkeopsis species described from the Indo-Pacific, although there are already nine valid Podarkeopsis species known from other parts of the world. This new species can be distinguished from the other Podarkeopsis species in having a palpostyle as long as the palpophore and double aciculae in both notopodia and neuropodia, and in bearing bifid furcate chaetae which have a smooth base on the shorter tine. A phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated sequences of five gene fragments (COI, 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, and histone H3) from 18 specimens of P.chinensissp. nov. showed that they formed a monophyletic clade that is sister to P.levifuscina. K2P genetic distances indicated that the four gene fragments (COI, 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, and 28S rRNA) of P.chinensissp. nov. diverged from the corresponding sequences of the closest related species of Podarkeopsis in GenBank and BOLD Systems by 21.1-27.5%, 20.3-23.1%, 0.1-0.2%, and 2.1-3.2%. An identification key is provided for species in the genus Podarkeopsis.

Mitochondrial genome of Dinophilus gyrociliatus (Annelida: Dinophilidae).

Project description:Here we report the 14,678 bp mitochondrial genome of the annelid Dinophilus gyrociliatus, the first mitochondrial genome from Dinophilidae. We recovered 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA, and 21 tRNA, the order of which is different from other annelid species. Interestingly, trnS1 was not recovered. The GC% across the genome was 34.20%.

Mitochondrial genome of Pseudopotamilla reniformis (Annelida: Sabellidae).

Project description:Here, we report the complete mitochondrial genome of sabellid Pseudopotamilla reniformis (Bruguière, 1789) (16,408 bp) and comprised of two ribosomal RNAs, the ubiquitous set of 13 protein-coding sequences, and 22 tRNAs. The order of protein-coding genes is consistent with the proposed conserved pattern, which contradicts recent discovery in other members of the family (Sabella spallanzanii in Daffe et al., 2021 and Bispira melanostigma in Hornfeck et al., 2022).

Designation of a neotype and redescription of Hesione reticulata von Marenzeller, 1879 from Japan (Annelida, Hesionidae).

Project description:The hesionid polychaete Hesione reticulata von Marenzeller, 1879 was described from Enoshima Island, Japan and has been recorded also from the Red Sea. Depending on researchers, it has been regarded as either a distinct species or synonymous with older established ones. The type specimen has been lost. In order to clarify its taxonomic status, Hesione reticulata is herein redescribed, illustrated, and a neotype is proposed based on recent material collected near the type locality. The diagnostic features include the presence of several dorsal, discontinuous longitudinal bands, interrupted by pale segmental spots; prostomium with tiny antennae; a tuberculated dorsal integument; acicular lobes double; and neurochaetal blades with guards approaching the distal tooth. The dorsal color pattern in life enables a clear distinction from similar species such as Hesione intertexta Grube, 1878 amongst others. Mitochondrial COI barcoding sequences are deposited in the DNA Data Bank of Japan. A key to Hesione species from Japan is also included.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the Loligo chinensis.

Project description:In this study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome of Loligo chinensis. The genome was 17,353 bp in length and contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes and 3 main non-coding regions. The overall base composition of L. chinensis is A 38.62%, C 19.40%, T32.37% and G 9.61%, with a highly A + T bias of 70.99%. All of the three control regions (CR) contain termination-associated sequences and conserved sequence blocks. Here, we describe a phylogenetic analysis of 11 species Cephalopoda based on the complete mitochondrial genome; the result showed that the Loligo edulis is most closely related to L. chinensis. This mitogenome sequence data would play an important role in the investigation of phylogenetic relationship, taxonomic resolution and phylogeography of the Cephalopoda.

Two new species of Parahesione (Annelida: Hesionidae) associated with ghost shrimps (Crustacea: Decapoda) and their phylogenetic relationships.

Project description:Two new species of Hesionidae, Parahesione pulvinata sp. nov. and Parahesione apiculata sp. nov. are described based on materials collected at tidal flats in Okinawa (Japan) from burrows of the ghost shrimps Neocallichirus jousseaumei and Glypturus armatus. The two new species are characterized by having eight enlarged cirri, dorsal cirrophores with dorsal foliose lobe and biramous parapodia, and by lacking median antenna. Parahesione apiculata sp. nov. has digitate lobes on the posterior margin of the dorsal foliose lobe (absent in P. pulvinata sp. nov.). The two new species were never found outside the ghost shrimp burrows, suggesting they are obligate symbionts. Phylogenetic analyses based on four concatenated genes suggest that the symbiotic lifestyle has evolved several times in Hesionidae.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the plumed worm Diopatra cuprea (Annelida: Onuphidae).

Project description:In this study, we describe the complete mitochondrial genome of Diopatra cuprea (Bosc, 1802). The mitogenome was found to contain 14,990 base pairs (67.53% A + T content), with a total of 37 genes (13 protein coding, 22 transfer RNAs, and 2 ribosomal RNAs). This study also examined mitogenome phylogenetics relationships of closely related species and recovered that D. cuprea is closely related to eunicids. This work has added to the genetic resources for furthering evolutionary studies of Annelida.

The Complete Mitochondrial Genome of Torix tukubana (Annelida: Hirudinea: Glossiphoniidae).

Project description:Torix tukubana is a poorly understood proboscidate leech species, generally an ectoparasite on amphibian species. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of T. tukubana was sequenced using next-generation sequencing (NGS), and the essential characteristics, gene arrangement, and phylogenetic relationship were analyzed. The results showed that the T. tukubana mitogenome was 14,814 bp in length, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs, and 1 control region (CR). The mitogenome composition presented a strong A + T bias (73.6%). All tRNAs had the typical clover structure except the trnS1 (TCT), whose dihydrouridine (DHU) arm was short, having only one complementary base pair. Additionally, 8 gene order patterns were identified among 25 known Hirudinea species, and T. tukubana was identical to the Hirudinea ground pattern. A phylogenetic analysis based on 13 PCGs indicated that all the studied species clustered into three main clades. The relationships among Hirudinea species were basically consistent with their gene arrangement results, but different from their morphological taxonomy. T. tukubana was in the monophyletic group of Glossiphoniidae, a finding consistent with previous research. Our results provided the essential characteristics of the T. tukubana mitogenome. As the first complete mitogenome of Torix, it could offer valuable information for a systematic understanding of the Hirudinea species.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Boccardiella hamata (Annelida: Polychaeta: Spionida).

Project description:In this study, the complete mitogenome sequence of Korean Boccardiella hamata was determined. This is the first complete mitogenome in the order Spionida. The complete mitogenome of B. hamata is 17,561 bp in length with 12 protein-coding genes (atp8 gene absent), 23 transfer RNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs, and 1 control region. Interestingly, the gene arrangement of the 12 PCGs of B. hamata is unique, which is very different from that of the other polychaetes currently known. The phylogenetic tree supported the traditional taxonomic position of Spionidae within subclass Sedentaria.

The complete mitochondrial genome analysis of Locastra muscosalis (Walker, 1866) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and phylogenetic implications.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of Locastra muscosalis (Walker, 1866) was sequenced and characterized in this study, which was the first reported complete mitogenome of the genus Locastra. The mitogenome of L. muscosalis has a total length of 15,177 bp, encompassing 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and an A-T rich region. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that L. muscosalis is closely associated with Orthaga euadrusalis. These data will serve as a valuable foundation for future investigations into the Epipaschiinae and Pyralidae evolutionary history.
