Back to the future: asymmetrical DπA 2,2'-bipyridine ligands for homoleptic copper(i)-based dyes in dye-sensitised solar cells.

ABSTRACT: Metal complexes used as sensitisers in dye-sensitised solar cells (DSCs) are conventionally constructed using a push-pull strategy with electron-releasing and electron-withdrawing (anchoring) ligands. In a new paradigm we have designed new DπA ligands incorporating diarylaminophenyl donor substituents and phosphonic acid anchoring groups. These new ligands function as organic dyes. For two separate classes of DπA ligands with 2,2'-bipyridine metal-binding domains, the DSCs containing the copper(i) complexes [Cu(DπA)₂]⁺ perform better than the push-pull analogues [Cu(DD)(AA)]⁺. Furthermore, we have shown for the first time that the complexes [Cu(DπA)₂]⁺ perform better than the organic DπA dye in DSCs. The synthetic studies and the device performances are rationalised with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) studies.

Project description:Simulating the process of amyloid aggregation with atomic detail is a challenging task for various reasons. One of them is that it is difficult to parametrise a force field such that all protein states ranging from the folded through the unfolded to the aggregated state are represented with the same level of accuracy. Here, we test whether the consideration of electronic polarisability improves the description of the different states of Aβ16–22. Surprisingly, the CHARMM Drude polarisable force field is found to perform worse than its unpolarisable counterpart CHARMM36m. Sources for this failure of the Drude model are discussed. Simulating the process of amyloid aggregation is a hard task. We test whether the inclusion of electronic polarisability as done in CHARMM-Drude improves the modelling of Aβ16–22 aggregation and find it does not. Reasons for the failure are given.

Project description:The properties of metal nanoclusters depend on both their structures and electronic states. However, in contrast to the significant advances achieved in the synthesis of structurally well-defined metal nanoclusters, systematic control of their electronic states is still challenging. In particular, stimuli-responsive and reversible control of the electronic states of metal nanoclusters is attractive from the viewpoint of their practical applications. Recently, we developed a synthesis method for atomically precise Ag nanoclusters using polyoxometalates (POMs) as inorganic ligands. Herein, we exploited the acid/base nature of POMs to reversibly change the electronic states of an atomically precise {Ag27} nanocluster via protonation/deprotonation of the surrounding POM ligands. We succeeded in systematically controlling the electronic states of the {Ag27} nanocluster by adding an acid or a base (0–6 equivalents), which was accompanied by drastic changes in the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of the nanocluster solutions. These results demonstrate the great potential of Ag nanoclusters for unprecedented applications in various fields such as sensing, biolabeling, electronics, and catalysis. The electronic states of Ag nanoclusters were reversibly controlled driven by protonation/deprotonation of polyoxometalate ligands.

Project description:Discrete nanocages provide a way to solubilize, separate, and tune the properties of fullerenes, but these 3D receptors cannot usually be synthesized easily from inexpensive starting materials, limiting their utility. Herein, we describe the first fullerene-binding nanocage (Cage4+) that can be made efficiently on a gram scale. Cage4+ was prepared in up to 57% yield by the formation of pyridinium linkages between complemantary porphyrin components that are themselves readily accessible. Cage4+ binds C60 and C70 with large association constants (>108 M−1), thereby solubilizing these fullerenes in polar solvents. Fullerene association and redox-properties were subsequently investigated across multiple charge states of the host-guest complexes. Remarkably, neutral and singly reduced fullerenes bind with similar strengths, leaving their 0/1− redox couples minimally perturbed and fully reversible, whereas other hosts substantially alter the redox properties of fullerenes. Thus, C60@Cage4+ and C70@Cage4+ may be useful as solubilized fullerene derivatives that preserve the inherent electron-accepting and electron-transfer capabilities of the fullerenes. Fulleride dianions were also found to bind strongly in Cage4+, while further reduction is centered on the host, leading to lowered association of the fulleride guest in the case of C602−. This report describes the first gram-scale synthesis of a nanocage that can host fullerenes (C60 and C70). The redox properties of the fullerenes are preserved in this host, enabling characterization of complexes with fulleride anions and dianions.

Project description:The construction of polyurethanes (PUs) with sequence-controlled block structures remains a serious challenge. Here, we report the precise synthesis of PUs with desirable molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and controlled block sequences from commercially available monomers. The synthetic procedure is derived from a liquid-phase synthetic methodology, which involves diisocyanate-based iterative protocols in combination with a convergent strategy. Furthermore, a pair of multifunctional PUs with different sequence orders of cationic and anion segments were prepared. We show that the sequence order of functional segments presents an impact on the self-assembly behavior and results in unexpected surface charges of assembled micelles, thereby affecting the protein absorption, cell internalization, biodistribution and antitumor effect of the nanocarriers in vitro and in vivo. This work provides a versatile platform for the development of precise multiblock PUs with structural complexity and functional diversity, and will greatly facilitate the clinical translation of PUs in biomedicine. Polyurethanes (PUs) with different segment sequence orders are prepared using a precise synthetic platform, and the sequence order of functional segments plays a crucial role in regulating the surface charges and performance of nano-drug carriers.

Project description:Light-driven self-oscillators without electronic circuits or conventional heat engines are carbon-emission-free systems and hold promise for developing autonomous transmission pumps and self-swimming micromotors. Thermosensitive hydrogels as self-oscillators can be used in the exploitation of low-temperature heat sources and in medical applications since the driving temperature is close to body temperature. Here, the autonomous swinging of the hydrogel was achieved by irradiating a constant light beam onto a head laminated with two thermosensitive hydrogels with different transition temperatures. Hysteresis resulting from the transition point difference between the two hydrogels allowed the light-driven self-oscillation without self-shadowing from the irradiation. The proposed theoretical model and numerical simulations explain this light-driven continuous swing, and the results agree qualitatively well with the experiments. The multi layered thermosensitive hydrogel can work as an autonomous swing driven by stationary light.

Project description:A series of neutral luminescent bis(phosphine) Cu(i) complexes of pyridyl-tetrazolate ligands (L1–L3) with the general formula [CuI(Ln)(P^P)] (1–6) were synthesized, which have been well characterized by IR, UV/vis, CV, 1H NMR and 31P NMR. For comparison, an Ag(i) complex [AgI(L2)(PPh3)2] (7) was also synthesized. The crystal structures of 2 and 7 have been further determined by X-ray crystallography. All these Cu(i) compounds show bright luminescence in the solid state with photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) in the range of 25.8% to 85.0%. More interestingly, the Cu(i) complexes bearing an additional dangling aromatic ring on the diimine ligands exhibit enhanced luminescent performance in various solutions and their PLQYs are significantly higher than those of related Cu(i) complexes without steric protection. Compared with 1, the Cu(i) complexes with an additional dangling tetrazole moiety show a significant solvatochromic effect, which is uncommon for luminescent Cu(i) complexes. Moreover, [CuI(L2)(PPh3)2] (2) was further designed as an OLED material, which showed a high external quantum efficiency of 7.7%. The Cu(i) complex of a pyridyl-tetrazolate ligand exhibits enhanced luminescence, which was fabricated as an OLED device with an EQE of 7.7%.
