3D imaging of a nuclear reactor using muography measurements.

ABSTRACT: The inspection of very large or thick structures represents one of the biggest challenges for nondestructive techniques. For such objects, a particularly powerful technique is muography, which makes use of free, natural cosmic-ray muons. Among other applications, this technique has been applied to provide two-dimensional (2D) images of nuclear reactors, pyramids, or volcanos. Recently, 3D algorithms developed for medical applications were adapted to the special case of muon imaging to derive density maps. The main difficulties relate to the size of the object and to the limited number of available projections. Here, we report on the first 3D imaging of a whole nuclear reactor, obtained without any prior information on its structure and using the largest set of muographic projections ever made in this field.

Measurements of stable ruthenium fission products in nuclear reactor fuel samples.

Project description:Ruthenium isotopes produced by fission in nuclear materials could be valuable signatures for nuclear verification or non-proliferation monitoring. In this study, ruthenium (Ru), uranium (U), and plutonium (Pu) isotope ratios and concentrations were measured in six different samples taken along a single nuclear fuel rod from a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The Ru isotope ratios [Formula: see text]Ru/[Formula: see text]Ru, [Formula: see text]Ru/[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]Ru/[Formula: see text]Ru increase upon moving from the end of the rod towards the center, correlating with the amount of burnup of the fuel indicated by U and Pu isotope ratios. Ruthenium fission product concentrations also increase near the center of the rod, consistent with other isotopic and elemental concentration data indicative of burnup. The measured Ru ratios clearly comprise inputs from both fission and neutron capture reactions. These measurements serve as important experimental validation of previous theoretical studies suggesting that Ru isotope ratios reflect the burnup of nuclear fuel and could be used to distinguish between reactor types.

Atmospheric muography for imaging and monitoring tropic cyclones.

Project description:Large-scale solid bodies on Earth such as volcanoes and man-made pyramids have been visualized with solid earth muography, and the recently invented technique, acqueous muography, has already demonstrated its capability to visualize ocean tides and tsunami. In this work, atmospheric muography, a technique to visualize and monitor the vertical profile of tropic cyclones (TCs) is presented for the first time. The density distribution and time-dependent behavior of several TCs which had approached Kagoshima, Japan, has been investigated with muography. The resultant time-sequential images captured their warm cores, and their movements were consistent with the TC trails and barometric pressure variations observed at meteorological stations. By combining multidirectional muographic images with barometric data, we anticipate that muography will become a useful tool to monitor the three-dimensional density distribution of a targeted mesoscale convective system.

High-intensity power-resolved radiation imaging of an operational nuclear reactor.

Project description:Knowledge of the neutron distribution in a nuclear reactor is necessary to ensure the safe and efficient burnup of reactor fuel. Currently these measurements are performed by in-core systems in what are extremely hostile environments and in most reactor accident scenarios it is likely that these systems would be damaged. Here we present a compact and portable radiation imaging system with the ability to image high-intensity fast-neutron and gamma-ray fields simultaneously. This system has been deployed to image radiation fields emitted during the operation of a TRIGA test reactor allowing a spatial visualization of the internal reactor conditions to be obtained. The imaged flux in each case is found to scale linearly with reactor power indicating that this method may be used for power-resolved reactor monitoring and for the assay of ongoing nuclear criticalities in damaged nuclear reactors.

Normative volume measurements of the fetal intra-cranial compartments using 3D volume in utero MR imaging.

Project description:PurposeTo describe the normal linear measurements of the skull (bi-parietal diameter and occipito-frontal diameter) and intracranial volumes (ventricular volume, brain parenchymal volume, extra-axial volume and total intra-cranial volume) in normal fetuses.Materials and methodsWe recruited pregnant women from low-risk pregnancies whose fetuses had normal ultrasound and in utero MR studies. All volunteers had in utero MR imaging on the same 1.5T MR scanner with a protocol consisting of routine and 3D steady-state volume imaging of the fetal brain. Linear measurements of the skull were made using the volume imaging. The 3D volume imaging also was manually segmented to delineate the intracranial compartments described above to determine quantitative values for each.ResultsTwo hundred normal fetuses were studied with gestational ages between 18 and 37 weeks. The linear skull measurements made on in utero MR imaging closely correlate with published data from ultrasonography. The intracranial volume data is presented as graphs and as tabular summaries of 3rd, 10th, 50th, 90th and 97th centiles.ConclusionIt is now possible to measure the volumes of the intracranial compartments in individual fetuses using ultrafast in utero MR techniques.Key points• There are limitations in using the skull size of the fetus to comment on the state of the fetal brain. • Volumes for the intracranial compartments are presented, based on in utero MR imaging of the fetal brain between 18 and 37 weeks gestational age. • Those normative values can be used to assess fetuses with known or suspected structural brain abnormalities and may assist the differential diagnosis provided by visual assessment of routine iuMR studies.

Computationally Efficient 3D Orientation Tracking Using Gyroscope Measurements.

Project description:Computationally efficient 3D orientation (3DO) tracking using gyroscope angular velocity measurements enables a short execution time and low energy consumption for the computing device. These are essential requirements in today's wearable device environments, which are characterized by limited resources and demands for high energy autonomy. We show that the computational efficiency of 3DO tracking is significantly improved by correctly interpreting each triplet of gyroscope measurements as simultaneous (using the rotation vector called the Simultaneous Orthogonal Rotation Angle, or SORA) rather than as sequential (using Euler angles) rotation. For an example rotation of 90°, depending on the change in the rotation axis, using Euler angles requires 35 to 78 times more measurement steps for comparable levels of accuracy, implying a higher sampling frequency and computational complexity. In general, the higher the demanded 3DO accuracy, the higher the computational advantage of using the SORA. Furthermore, we demonstrate that 12 to 14 times faster execution is achieved by adapting the SORA-based 3DO tracking to the architecture of the executing low-power ARM Cortex® M0+ microcontroller using only integer arithmetic, lookup tables, and the small-angle approximation. Finally, we show that the computational efficiency is further improved by choosing the appropriate 3DO computational method. Using rotation matrices is 1.85 times faster than using rotation quaternions when 3DO calculations are performed for each measurement step. On the other hand, using rotation quaternions is 1.75 times faster when only the final 3DO result of several consecutive rotations is needed. We conclude that by adopting the presented practices, the clock frequency of a processor computing the 3DO can be significantly reduced. This substantially prolongs the energy autonomy of the device and enhances its usability in day-to-day measurement scenarios.

Pilot study of eruption forecasting with muography using convolutional neural network.

Project description:Muography is a novel method of visualizing the internal structures of active volcanoes by using high-energy near-horizontally arriving cosmic muons. The purpose of this study is to show the feasibility of muography to forecast the eruption event with the aid of the convolutional neural network (CNN). In this study, seven daily consecutive muographic images were fed into the CNN to compute the probability of eruptions on the eighth day, and our CNN model was trained by hyperparameter tuning with the Bayesian optimization algorithm. By using the data acquired in Sakurajima volcano, Japan, as an example, the forecasting performance achieved a value of 0.726 for the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, showing the reasonable correlation between the muographic images and eruption events. Our result suggests that muography has the potential for eruption forecasting of volcanoes.

Deep learning -- promises for 3D nuclear imaging: a guide for biologists.

Project description:For the past century, the nucleus has been the focus of extensive investigations in cell biology. However, many questions remain about how its shape and size are regulated during development, in different tissues, or during disease and aging. To track these changes, microscopy has long been the tool of choice. Image analysis has revolutionized this field of research by providing computational tools that can be used to translate qualitative images into quantitative parameters. Many tools have been designed to delimit objects in 2D and, eventually, in 3D in order to define their shapes, their number or their position in nuclear space. Today, the field is driven by deep-learning methods, most of which take advantage of convolutional neural networks. These techniques are remarkably adapted to biomedical images when trained using large datasets and powerful computer graphics cards. To promote these innovative and promising methods to cell biologists, this Review summarizes the main concepts and terminologies of deep learning. Special emphasis is placed on the availability of these methods. We highlight why the quality and characteristics of training image datasets are important and where to find them, as well as how to create, store and share image datasets. Finally, we describe deep-learning methods well-suited for 3D analysis of nuclei and classify them according to their level of usability for biologists. Out of more than 150 published methods, we identify fewer than 12 that biologists can use, and we explain why this is the case. Based on this experience, we propose best practices to share deep-learning methods with biologists.

Automated 3D bio-imaging analysis of nuclear organization by NucleusJ 2.0.

Project description:NucleusJ 1.0, an ImageJ plugin, is a useful tool to analyze nuclear morphology and chromatin organization in plant and animal cells. NucleusJ 2.0 is a new release of NucleusJ, in which image processing is achieved more quickly using a command-lineuser interface. Starting with large collection of 3D nuclei, segmentation can be performed by the previously developed Otsu-modified method or by a new 3D gift-wrapping method, taking better account of nuclear indentations and unstained nucleoli. These two complementary methods are compared for their accuracy by using three types of datasets available to the community at https://www.brookes.ac.uk/indepth/images/ . Finally, NucleusJ 2.0 was evaluated using original plant genetic material by assessing its efficiency on nuclei stained with DNA dyes or after 3D-DNA Fluorescence in situ hybridization. With these improvements, NucleusJ 2.0 permits the generation of large user-curated datasets that will be useful for software benchmarking or to train convolution neural networks.

Mapping the native organization of the yeast nuclear pore complex using nuclear radial intensity measurements.

Project description:Selective transport across the nuclear envelope (NE) is mediated by the nuclear pore complex (NPC), a massive ∼100-MDa assembly composed of multiple copies of ∼30 nuclear pore proteins (Nups). Recent advances have shed light on the composition and structure of NPCs, but approaches that could map their organization in live cells are still lacking. Here, we introduce an in vivo method to perform nuclear radial intensity measurements (NuRIM) using fluorescence microscopy to determine the average position of NE-localized proteins along the nucleocytoplasmic transport axis. We apply NuRIM to study the organization of the NPC and the mobile transport machinery in budding yeast. This reveals a unique snapshot of the intact yeast NPC and identifies distinct steady-state localizations for various NE-associated proteins and nuclear transport factors. We find that the NPC architecture is robust against compositional changes and could also confirm that in contrast to Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, the scaffold Y complex is arranged symmetrically in the yeast NPC. Furthermore, NuRIM was applied to probe the orientation of intrinsically disordered FG-repeat segments, providing insight into their roles in selective NPC permeability and structure.

AI-based design of a nuclear reactor core.

Project description:The authors developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithm for the design and optimization of a nuclear reactor core based on a flexible geometry and demonstrated a 3× improvement in the selected performance metric: temperature peaking factor. The rapid development of advanced, and specifically, additive manufacturing (3-D printing) and its introduction into advanced nuclear core design through the Transformational Challenge Reactor program have presented the opportunity to explore the arbitrary geometry design of nuclear-heated structures. The primary challenge is that the arbitrary geometry design space is vast and requires the computational evaluation of many candidate designs, and the multiphysics simulation of nuclear systems is very time-intensive. Therefore, the authors developed a machine learning-based multiphysics emulator and evaluated thousands of candidate geometries on Summit, Oak Ridge National Laboratory's leadership class supercomputer. The results presented in this work demonstrate temperature distribution smoothing in a nuclear reactor core through the manipulation of the geometry, which is traditionally achieved in light water reactors through variable assembly loading in the axial direction and fuel shuffling during refueling in the radial direction. The conclusions discuss the future implications for nuclear systems design with arbitrary geometry and the potential for AI-based autonomous design algorithms.
