Project description:Colloidal semiconductor nanoplatelets exhibit strong quantum confinement for electrons and holes as well as excitons in one dimension, while their in-plane motion is free. Because of the large dielectric contrast between the semiconductor and its ligand environment, the Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes is strongly enhanced. By means of one- and two-photon photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, we measure the energies of the 1S and 1P exciton states in CdSe nanoplatelets with thicknesses varied from 3 up to 7 monolayers. By comparison with calculations, performed in the effective mass approximation with account of the dielectric enhancement, we evaluate exciton binding energies of 195-315 meV, which is about 20 times greater than that in bulk CdSe. Our calculations of the effective Coulomb potential for very thin nanoplatelets are close to the Rytova-Keldysh model, and the exciton binding energies are comparable with the values reported for monolayer-thick transition metal dichalcogenides.

Project description:Optical alignment and optical orientation of excitons are studied experimentally on an ensemble of core/shell CdSe/CdS colloidal nanoplatelets. Linear and circular polarization of photoluminescence during resonant excitation of excitons is measured at cryogenic temperatures and with magnetic fields applied in the Faraday geometry. The developed theory addresses the optical alignment and optical orientation of excitons in colloidal nanocrystals, taking into account both bright and dark exciton states in the presence of strong electron-hole exchange interaction and the random in-plane orientation of nanoplatelets within the ensemble. Our theoretical analysis of the obtained experimental data allows us to evaluate the exciton fine structure parameters, the g-factors, and the spin lifetimes of the bright and dark excitons. The optical alignment effect enables the identification of the exciton and trion contributions to the emission spectrum, even in the absence of their clear separation in the spectra.

Project description:Spin relaxation of charge carriers in strongly quantum confined perovskite magic-sized clusters has been probed, for the first time, by using polarization-controlled femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy. Fs-TA measurements with a circularly polarized pump and probe allowed for the determination of the exciton spin relaxation lifetime (∼1.5 ps) at room temperature based on the dynamics of a photoinduced absorption (PIA) feature peaked at 458 nm. This spin lifetime is shorter than that of perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) with a larger size, and the results suggest that exciton confinement and defects likely play a more important role in these strongly quantum confined magic-sized clusters with a larger surface-to-volume ratio.

Project description:Theory predicts peculiar features for excited-state dynamics in one dimension (1D) that are difficult to be observed experimentally. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are an excellent approximation to 1D quantum confinement, due to their very high aspect ratio and low density of defects. Here we use ultrafast optical spectroscopy to probe photogenerated charge-carriers in (6,5) semiconducting SWNTs. We identify the transient energy shift of the highly polarizable S33 transition as a sensitive fingerprint of charge-carriers in SWNTs. By measuring the coherent phonon amplitude profile we obtain a precise estimate of the Stark-shift and discuss the binding energy of the S33 excitonic transition. From this, we infer that charge-carriers are formed instantaneously (<50 fs) even upon pumping the first exciton, S11. The decay of the photogenerated charge-carrier population is well described by a model for geminate recombination in 1D.

Project description:The main goal of the present work is to study the coherent phonon in strongly confined CdSe quantum dots (QDs) under varied pump fluences. The main characteristics of coherent phonons (amplitude, frequency, phase, spectrogram) of CdSe QDs under the red-edge pump of the excitonic band [1S(e)-1S3/2(h)] are reported. We demonstrate for the first time that the amplitude of the coherent optical longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon at 6.16 THz excited in CdSe nanoparticles by a femtosecond unchirped pulse shows a non-monotone dependence on the pump fluence. This dependence exhibits the maximum at pump fluence ~0.8 mJ/cm². At the same time, the amplitudes of the longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon mode at 0.55 THz and of the coherent wave packet of toluene at 15.6, 23.6 THz show a monotonic rise with the increase of pump fluence. The time frequency representation of an oscillating signal corresponding to LO phonons revealed by continuous wavelet transform (CWT) shows a profound destructive quantum interference close to the origin of distinct (optical phonon) and continuum-like (exciton) quasiparticles. The CWT spectrogram demonstrates a nonlinear chirp at short time delays, where the chirp sign depends on the pump pulse fluence. The CWT spectrogram reveals an anharmonic coupling between optical and acoustic phonons.

Project description:The protein-water interface is a critical determinant of protein structure and function, yet the precise nature of dynamics in this complex system remains elusive. Tryptophan fluorescence has become the probe of choice for such dynamics on the picosecond time scale (especially via fluorescence "upconversion"). In the absence of ultrafast ("quasi-static") quenching from nearby groups, the TDFSS (time-dependent fluorescence Stokes shift) for exposed Trp directly reports on dipolar relaxation near the interface (both water and polypeptide). The small protein GB1 contains a single Trp (W43) of this type, and its structure is refractory to pH above 3. Thus, it can be used to examine the dependence of dipolar relaxation upon charge reconfiguration with titration. Somewhat surprisingly, the dipolar dynamics in the 100 fs to 100 ps range were unchanged with pH, although nanosecond yield, rates, and access all changed. These results were rationalized with the help of molecular dynamics (including QM-MM) simulations that reveal a balancing, sometimes even countervailing influence of protein and water dipoles. Interestingly, these simulations also showed the dominant influence of water molecules which are associated with the protein interface for up to 30 ps yet free to rotate at approximately "bulk" water rates.

Project description:Trap states can strongly affect semiconductor nanocrystals, by quenching, delaying, and spectrally shifting the photoluminescence (PL). Trap states have proven elusive and difficult to study in detail at the ensemble level, let alone in the single-trap regime. CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs) exhibit significant fractions of long-lived "delayed emission" and near-infrared "trap emission". We use these two spectroscopic handles to study trap states at the ensemble and the single-particle level. We find that reversible hole trapping leads to both delayed and trap PL, involving the same trap states. At the single-particle level, reversible trapping induces exponential delayed PL and trap PL, with lifetimes ranging from 40 to 1300 ns. In contrast with exciton PL, single-trap PL is broad and shows spectral diffusion and strictly single-photon emission. Our results highlight the large inhomogeneity of trap states, even at the single-particle level.

Project description:Current colloidal synthesis methods for CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs) routinely yield samples that emit, in discrete steps, from 460 to 550 nm. A significant challenge lies with obtaining thicker NPLs, to further widen the emission range. This is at present typically achieved via colloidal atomic layer deposition onto CdSe cores, or by synthesizing NPL core/shell structures. Here, we demonstrate a novel reaction scheme, where we start from 4.5 monolayer (ML) NPLs and increase the thickness in a two-step reaction that switches from 2D to 3D growth. The key feature is the enhancement of the growth rate of basal facets by the addition of CdCl2, resulting in a series of nearly monodisperse CdSe NPLs with thicknesses between 5.5 and 8.5 ML. Optical characterization yielded emission peaks from 554 nm up to 625 nm with a line width (fwhm) of 9-13 nm, making them one of the narrowest colloidal nanocrystal emitters currently available in this spectral range. The NPLs maintained a short emission lifetime of 5-11 ns. Finally, due to the increased red shift of the NPL band edge photoluminescence excitation spectra revealed several high-energy peaks. Calculation of the NPL band structure allowed us to identify these excited-state transitions, and spectral shifts are consistent with a significant mixing of light and split-off hole states. Clearly, chloride ions can add a new degree of freedom to the growth of 2D colloidal nanocrystals, yielding new insights into both the NPL synthesis as well as their optoelectronic properties.

Project description:Semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs), with their large exciton binding energy, narrow photoluminescence (PL), and absence of dielectric screening for photons emitted normal to the NPL surface, could be expected to become the fastest luminophores amongst all colloidal nanostructures. However, super-fast emission is suppressed by a dark (optically passive) exciton ground state, substantially split from a higher-lying bright (optically active) state. Here, the exciton fine structure in 2-8 monolayer (ML) thick Csn - 1 Pbn Br3n + 1 NPLs is revealed by merging temperature-resolved PL spectra and time-resolved PL decay with an effective mass model taking quantum confinement and dielectric confinement anisotropy into account. This approach exposes a thickness-dependent bright-dark exciton splitting reaching 32.3 meV for the 2 ML NPLs. The model also reveals a 5-16 meV splitting of the bright exciton states with transition dipoles polarized parallel and perpendicular to the NPL surfaces, the order of which is reversed for the thinnest NPLs, as confirmed by TR-PL measurements. Accordingly, the individual bright states must be taken into account, while the dark exciton state strongly affects the optical properties of the thinnest NPLs even at room temperature. Significantly, the derived model can be generalized for any isotropically or anisotropically confined nanostructure.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2-D) semiconductor nanomaterials are receiving tremendous research interests due in part to their attractive light absorption and charge transport properties. Integration of catalytic metal nanoparticles with these 2-D semiconductors can potentially lead to new photocatalytic nanoheterostructures for efficient solar-to-fuel conversion. Here we report the synthesis and transient absorption study of colloidal quantum confined CdSe nanosheets with a Pt nanoparticle at the edge or vertex. Due to the large in-plane exciton mobility, ∼86.6 ± 0.5% of excitons generated in CdSe sheets can be transported to NS-Pt interface and quenched by energy transfer to Pt (with a half-life <150 fs). The remaining excitons (13.4 ± 0.5%) become localized due to fast hole trapping and can be dissociated by interfacial electron transfer to Pt (with a half life of ∼9.4 ± 0.7 ps). The resulting charge-separated states (with electrons in Pt and trapped holes in CdSe) are long-lived (half life of ∼75 ± 14 ns), suggesting possible applications for solar driven H2 generation.
