Project description:Empathy and mindfulness are currently major topics of scientific interest. Although it is well-known that mindfulness-typically as an outcome related to meditation-generates empathy at the state level, only a small number of studies have documented the trait (i.e., personality) level association between mindfulness and empathy. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms (subcomponents and mediator variables) that support this association remain unclear. Thus, here, with a focus on the trait level, we investigated relationships among multiple subcomponents of trait mindfulness and trait empathy (Study 1). Next, we reexamined the aforementioned relationships in an independent sample, with the further aim of investigating relevant mediation factors (Study 2). We found that two attention-related components of trait mindfulness-observing and acting with awareness-reliably and positively related to both affective and cognitive dimensions of trait empathy (i.e., empathic concern and perspective taking). Furthermore, we found that effortful control, reappraisal, and trait alexithymia mediated relationships between the aforementioned attention-related components of trait mindfulness and empathic concern. Taken together, our results suggest that the links between mindfulness and empathy are multidimensional and complex. These findings may ultimately contribute to an understanding of the mechanisms underlying the positive effects of meditation on empathy.

Project description:ObjectivesTo test the magnitude of the relationship between self-reported stressor exposure and perceived stress in police officers using a novel measure of daily work events, and whether dispositional mindfulness and resilience moderate this relationship.MethodsA total of 114 law enforcement officers from a mid-sized Midwestern US city completed daily logs of job stressors and associated perceived stress, as well as additional self-report measures of perceived stress, trait mindfulness and resilience, and demographics and work information. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to cluster job stressors into a smaller number of components in a data-driven manner. Linear mixed-effects models were used to test the relationship between stressor exposure and perceived stress for each component, and the moderation of this relationship by trait mindfulness and resilience.ResultsThe PCA categorized stressor exposure into three components: (1) acute or traumatic line-of-duty stressors, (2) routine daily stressors, and (3) interpersonal stressors. Results of mixed models showed robust positive relationships between self-reported stressor exposure and corresponding perceived stress across all 3 components. Dispositional mindfulness (but not resilience) moderated the association between stressor exposure and perceived stress for routine stressors, such that individuals with higher dispositional mindfulness showed a relatively attenuated relationship between exposure to routine daily stressors and resulting perceived stress.ConclusionsPolice officers high in dispositional mindfulness may experience daily routine stressors as less stressful, which can reduce the accumulation of general stress in the long term and which could help buffer against negative health outcomes associated with perceived stress.Trial registrationClinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03488875.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12671-021-01707-4.

Project description:BackgroundSleep disturbances and insufficient sleep are highly prevalent. Both clinical sleep disorders and multiple forms of experimental sleep loss predict heightened inflammation. As such, it is necessary to investigate potential protective factors. Given that trait positive affect (PA) is associated with reduced inflammation, and buffers the proinflammatory effects of stress, it is possible that high trait positive affect might protect individuals from an inflammatory response to sleep disruption. The present study tested this hypothesis in an experimental sleep disruption paradigm with assessment of cellular inflammation.MethodsData were drawn from good sleeping adults (n = 79) who participated in a randomized, within-subjects crossover experiment comparing the effects of two nights of sleep disruption versus two nights of uninterrupted sleep. Stimulated monocytic production of intracellular proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were assayed using flow cytometric methods and indexed as the percentage of monocytes expressing TNF, IL-6, or co-expressing both. Hypotheses were evaluated using linear mixed effects models.ResultsControlling for negative affect, body mass index, age, and sex, PA significantly moderated the associations between sleep condition and stimulated monocyte production of IL-6 (b = -1.03, t = -2.02, p = .048) and its co-expression with TNF (b = -0.93, t = -2.00, p = .049), such that inflammatory responses were blunted among those high in PA with increases principally among those low in PA. The effect on TNF was similar in terms of effect size, but marginally significant.ConclusionsActivation of cellular inflammation in response to sleep disruption is buffered by PA independent of negative affect. Interventions that promote PA might protect persons from the inflammatory activation following sleep loss, with the potential to mitigate the adverse health consequences of sleep disturbance.

Project description:ObjectivePost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic, disabling condition. Our main objective is to investigate the association between trait mindfulness and PTSD over a period of 54 months. The secondary objective is to provide an exhaustive description of PTSD trajectories after the Bataclan attack.MethodsWe designed a prospective cohort study of 133 subjects present in the Bataclan concert hall during the November 2015 terrorist attack in Paris, France. Data were recorded 6, 18, 30, and 54 months after the attack. The primary endpoint was evaluated using the PTSD Check List Scale. Trait mindfulness was measured by the 14-item Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory.ResultsFMI scores were consistently, significantly, and negatively associated with PCL-5 scores. Adjusted odds ratios were at 0.81 (6 months), 0.88 (18 months) 0.82 (30 months), and 0.81 (54 months). PTSD prevalence 6 months after the event was 77%; it remained at 41% after 54 months. PTSD status of subjects is fluctuating. Latent class analysis divided the cohort into 3 groups: 21% of subject who remained below PTSD threshold throughout, 30% who remained above throughout, and 49% who steadily reduced their PTSD scores over time.ConclusionIn our cohort, mindfulness is negatively associated with PTSD. Mindfulness programs are designed to improve global resilience and treat anxiety and mood disorders. Further research is needed to investigate if improving trait mindfulness is possible and beneficial for patients suffering from PTSD.

Project description:Background/objectivesSleep health has been associated with diet quality, but the relationship between chrononutrition patterns and multidimensional sleep health is unclear. This study identifies chrononutrition patterns among U.S. adults and examines their associations with multidimensional sleep health.MethodsThis cross-sectional analysis used data from the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Chrononutrition behaviors were assessed using two 24 h dietary recalls. Latent profile analysis was used to identify chrononutrition profiles. Multivariable survey regression models determined the associations between chrononutrition patterns and sleep health dimensions.ResultsThe sample included 5228 subjects with a median age of 49 years. Of the sample, 52% of the participants were female, and 65% were White. In adjusted models, each additional hour between wake time and first instance of eating was associated with a 19% increase in the odds of poor timing (sleep midpoint < 2:00 a.m. or >4:00 a.m.; 95% CI: 1.07-1.33) and a 21% increase in poor duration (<7 or >9 h/night; 95% CI: 1.09-1.33). Each additional hour between last eating and bedtime was associated with 9% higher odds of poor duration (95% CI: 1.03-1.16). A one-hour longer eating window was associated with 10% lower odds of poor timing (95% CI: 0.84-0.98). We identified five chrononutrition profiles: Typical Eating (reference), Early Finished Eating, Later Heavy Eating, Extended Window Eating, and Restricted Window Eating. The Later Heavy Eating profile exhibited 96% higher odds of poor timing (95% CI: 1.09-3.51) and the Restricted Window Eating profile had 94% higher odds of poor duration (95% CI: 1.10-3.43).ConclusionsThese findings highlight the importance of unique chrononutrition patterns in relation to multidimensional sleep health. We provide a framework for future studies to identify personalized chrononutrition interventions and their role in improving sleep health.

Project description:Research on mindfulness-based interventions reports mainly on improvements at the group level. Thus, there is a need to elaborate on the individual differences in their effectiveness. The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to examine which personality factors could influence burnout reduction associated with different types of mindfulness practice and (2) to evaluate the interaction between personality factors and the amount of home practice; both aims were controlled for sociodemographic characteristics. A total of 104 Cuban mental health professionals, who participated in a crossover trial, were included. The effect of personality (Cattell's 16 Personality Factors) was analyzed through regression analysis. First, the results revealed that Emotional Stability and Vigilance could negatively moderate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions. Second, participants who scored low in Sensitivity or Vigilance could benefit more from the body-centered practices (i.e., body scan and Hatha yoga practices), but no significant results for the mind-centered practices (i.e., classical meditation) were found. Third, participants who scored high in Self-reliance could benefit more from informal practice. Other personality factors did not appear to moderate the effect of the interventions, though previous experience in related techniques must be considered. Recommendations and clinical implications are discussed. Trial registration number is NCT03296254 (clinicaltrials.gov).

Project description:Accumulating evidence shows a positive relationship between mindfulness and explicit cognitive functioning, i.e., that which occurs with conscious intent and awareness. However, recent evidence suggests that there may be a negative relationship between mindfulness and implicit types of learning, or those that occur without conscious awareness or intent. Here we examined the neural mechanisms underlying the recently reported negative relationship between dispositional mindfulness and implicit probabilistic sequence learning in both younger and older adults. We tested the hypothesis that the relationship is mediated by communication, or functional connectivity, of brain regions once traditionally considered to be central to dissociable learning systems: the caudate, medial temporal lobe (MTL), and prefrontal cortex (PFC). We first replicated the negative relationship between mindfulness and implicit learning in a sample of healthy older adults (60-90 years old) who completed three event-related runs of an implicit sequence learning task. Then, using a seed-based connectivity approach, we identified task-related connectivity associated with individual differences in both learning and mindfulness. The main finding was that caudate-MTL connectivity (bilaterally) was positively correlated with learning and negatively correlated with mindfulness. Further, the strength of task-related connectivity between these regions mediated the negative relationship between mindfulness and learning. This pattern of results was limited to the older adults. Thus, at least in healthy older adults, the functional communication between two interactive learning-relevant systems can account for the relationship between mindfulness and implicit probabilistic sequence learning.

Project description:ObjectivesGrowing evidence of the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) warrants greater understanding of factors relevant to the relation between trait mindfulness and PTSD, such as emotion dysregulation (ED). The goal of this study was to examine associations between trait mindfulness, ED, and PTSD symptoms across two samples of trauma-exposed adults.MethodsParticipants for Sample 1 (n = 39, 90% women, 100% Black) and Sample 2 (n = 60, 100% women, 87% Black) were recruited from an urban hospital in the South. Trait mindfulness, ED, and PTSD were assessed.ResultsAcross both samples, mindfulness and ED were significantly associated with overall PTSD severity (r = -.49 and r = -.42, ps = .001; r = .53 and r = .51, ps < .001, respectively) in the expected direction. In Sample 1, mindful nonjudgment and difficulty with emotion regulation strategies showed the strongest associations with overall PTSD severity as well as symptom clusters. In Sample 2, mindful acceptance and all ED dimensions (except non-awareness) showed strong associations with overall PTSD severity and particularly with negative cognitions and mood symptoms. In both samples, ED mediated the association between mindfulness and overall PTSD severity (Sample 1: ab = -.15, 95%CI [-.35, -.02]; Sample 2: ab = -.11, 95%CI [-.22, -.04]).ConclusionsThese findings demonstrate the important role of ED in the relation between trait mindfulness and PTSD symptoms among trauma-exposed adults. Project description:BackgroundAlthough poor sleep health is associated with weight gain and obesity in the non-pregnant population, research on the impact of sleep health on weight change among pregnant people using a multidimensional sleep health framework is needed.ObjectivesThis secondary data analysis of the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcome Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-be Sleep Duration and Continuity Study (n = 745) examined associations between mid-pregnancy sleep health indicators, multidimensional sleep health and gestational weight gain (GWG).MethodsSleep domains (i.e. regularity, nap duration, timing, efficiency and duration) were assessed via actigraphy between 16 and 21 weeks of gestation. We defined 'healthy' sleep in each domain with empirical thresholds. Multidimensional sleep health was based on sleep profiles derived from latent class analysis and composite score defined as the sum of healthy sleep domains. Total GWG, the difference between self-reported pre-pregnancy weight and the last measured weight before delivery, was converted to z-scores using gestational age- and BMI-specific charts. GWG was defined as low (<-1 SD), moderate (-1 or +1 SD) and high (>+1 SD).ResultsNearly 50% of the participants had a healthy sleep profile (i.e. healthy sleep in most domains), whereas others had a sleep profile defined as having varying degrees of unhealthy sleep in each domain. The individual sleep domains were associated with a 20%-30% lower risk of low or high GWG. Each additional healthy sleep indicator was associated with a 10% lower risk of low (vs. moderate), but not high, GWG. Participants with late timing, long duration and low efficiency (vs. healthy) profiles had the strongest risk of low GWG (relative risk 1.5, 95% confidence interval 0.9, 2.4). Probabilistic bias analysis suggested that most associations between individual sleep health indicators, sleep health profiles and GWG were biased towards the null.ConclusionsFuture research should determine whether sleep health is an intervention target for healthy GWG.

Project description:Trait mindfulness appears to be related to lower levels of negative affective symptoms, but it remains uncertain which facets of mindfulness are most important in this relationship. Accordingly, the present meta-analysis examined studies reporting correlations between affective symptoms and trait mindfulness as assessed by the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire. A comprehensive search yielded 148 eligible studies, comprising 157 distinct samples and 44,075 participants. The weighted mean correlation for affective symptoms and overall trait mindfulness was r = -0.53. Among mindfulness facets, Nonjudge (r = -0.48) and Act with Awareness (r = -0.47) demonstrated the largest correlations, followed by Nonreact (r = -0.33) and Describe (r = -0.29). Observe was not significantly correlated with affective symptoms. No significant differences in the strength of correlations were found between anxiety, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, though symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder exhibited a weaker negative relationship with the Describe facet compared to PTSD symptoms. Describe also showed a stronger relationship with affective symptoms in Eastern samples compared to Western samples, whereas Western samples had a stronger relationship with Nonjudge. These results provide insight into the nature of the association between trait mindfulness and negative affect.
