Project description:Pregnant women are considered to be a population vulnerable to influenza and COVID-19 infections, and the latest guidelines consistently recommend that they receive influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations. A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted among pregnant women in Poland to determine which factors have the greatest impact on their decision to vaccinate against influenza and COVID-19. A total of 515 pregnant women participated in the study. Among them, 38.4% (n = 198) demonstrated a positive attitude toward influenza vaccination, and 64.3% (n = 331) demonstrated a positive attitude toward COVID-19 vaccination. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the strongest influence on positive attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination is having it recommended by an obstetrician-gynecologist (OR = 2.439, p = 0.025). The obstetrician-gynecologist's recommendation to vaccinate against influenza also significantly influences the decision to vaccinate (OR = 5.323). The study results also show a strong correlation between the obstetrician-gynecologist as a source of information on influenza and vaccination and participants' positive attitudes toward vaccination (OR = 4.163). Obstetricians have a significant influence on pregnant women's decisions regarding vaccinations. Further recommendations to vaccinate and awareness-raising among obstetricians may be needed to increase the vaccination rate of pregnant women in Poland.

Project description:This paper analyzes the impact of mobility contraction on employee furlough and excess deaths in Italy during the COVID-19 crisis. Our approach exploits rainfall patterns across Italian administrative regions as a source of exogenous variation in human mobility to pinpoint the causal effect of mobility restrictions on excess deaths and furlough workers. Results confirm that the first countrywide lockdown has effectively curtailed the COVID-19 epidemics restricting it mainly to the northern part of the country, with the drawback of a countrywide increase in unemployment risk. Our analysis points out that a mobility contraction of 1% leads to a mortality reduction of 0.6%, but it induces an increase of 10% in Wage Guarantee Funds allowed hours. We discuss return-to-work policies and prioritizing policies for administering COVID-19 vaccines in the most advanced stage of a vaccination campaign when the healthy active population is left to be vaccinated.

Project description:Abstract This paper investigates the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis on firms’ performance and financial vulnerability. Exploiting longitudinal firm-level data from the World Bank’s “Enterprise Surveys follow-up on COVID-19” for 20 European countries, we assess whether green management quality and pre-pandemic credit access difficulties affect firms’ ability to withstand the negative impact of the pandemic. Our results indicate that green firms are more resilient to the pandemic shock. In particular, the likelihood of pandemic-induced drops in sales and liquidity significantly decreases as the quality of green management improves. Conversely, prior financing constraints strongly exacerbate the pandemic’s impact on firms’ performance and amplify liquidity stress and financing problems. Credit-constrained enterprises are not only more likely to experience liquidity shortages and repayment problems, but they also face higher difficulties in accessing bank financing. The COVID-19 crisis has also hampered the beneficial role that green management exerted on access to credit in the pre-pandemic period. During the pandemic, firms with sound environmental management practices do not benefit from improved access to finance and have a lower demand for credit, possibly suggesting a slowdown in their green investment activities. Pre-pandemic financing constraints significantly impair firms’ economic and financial performance and increase difficulties in accessing bank credit during the COVID-19 crisis. Our results suggest that public policies, aimed at encouraging firms’ environmentally sustainable behaviours and at supporting their access to credit, may contribute to strengthen the resilience of the economic system to unexpected shocks and favour the transition to a sustainable economy. Furthermore, the awareness of the competitive advantages offered by eco-sustainable practices may represent an incentive form firms to improve their environmental management quality and increase investment in green technologies. Project description:BackgroundThe vaccine supply chain (VSC) integrates all activities from production to dispensing, characterized by complexity and low responsiveness. This study aims to define key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the logistic and operational performance during the COVID-19 National Vaccination Plan in Colombia.MethodsThis study employed the design science research (DSR) methodology to develop a dashboard for monitoring COVID-19 vaccination progress. DSR is a problem-solving paradigm focused on conceiving, testing, and evaluating artifacts to tackle specific challenges. The dashboard integrated a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that incorporated three dimensions: epidemiological, humanitarian, and logistical. Both, the dashboard and the KPIs underwent validation through three iterative DSR cycles, in collaboration with both private and public health stakeholders.ResultsA set of 38 validated KPIs, grouped into eight categories, was consolidated into an online dashboard. This tool enabled real-time tracking of the National Vaccination Plan at both national and departmental levels, providing stakeholders with a comprehensive view of the vaccine supply chain. It also allowed for the assessment and comparison of the execution and effectiveness of public policies.ConclusionsThese KPIs supported decision-making from a logistical standpoint, enhancing the planning, preparation, and continuous improvement of mass vaccination processes, thereby increasing their potential impact even further.

Project description:Indocyanine green (ICG) is an FDA-approved near infrared (NIR) imaging agent for diagnosis and imaging guided surgery. It also exhibits phototoxicity under high-dose NIR irradiation, expanding its application as a photo-therapeutic agent. Since ICG's efficiency as a type II photosensitizer has been controversial due to its low triplet state yield, other mechanisms have been explored. While claims of toxic decomposition products, accompanied by irreversible ICG photobleaching, were proposed as the main mechanism, evidences from systemic studies are lacking. In this work, we aimed to unravel the factors affecting ICG photobleaching and the associated photo-killing effect on neuroblastoma, one of the most common pediatric tumors but often escapes therapy. Specifically, we examined how albumin-induced ICG stabilization affects the ICG photobleaching process, and the effect of photobleached ICG on cell proliferation and viability of neuroblastoma cells. It was found that ICG photobleaching was significant only under aerobic conditions and was more efficient in solutions with higher concentration ICG monomers, which were stabilized from aggregates by the presence of BSA while increasing photobleaching and associated oxygen consumption. Photobleached ICG inhibited cell proliferation, indicating another effect of tumor treatment by ICG. Taken together, while enhanced photobleaching by BSA-bound ICG monomers may reduce the photodynamic effect targeting cellular components, the photoproducts directly contribute to tumor growth inhibition and assist in a secondary mechanism to stop tumor growth.

Project description:Musical life became disrupted in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many musicians and venues turned to online alternatives, such as livestreaming. In this study, three livestreamed concerts were organized to examine separate, yet interconnected concepts-agency, presence, and social context-to ascertain which components of livestreamed concerts facilitate social connectedness. Hierarchical Bayesian modeling was conducted on 83 complete responses to examine the effects of the manipulations on feelings of social connectedness with the artist and the audience. Results showed that in concert 1, where half of the participants were allowed to vote for the final song to be played, this option did not result in the experience of more agency. Instead, if their preferred song was played (regardless of voting ability) participants experienced greater connectedness to the artist. In concert 2, participants who attended the concert with virtual reality headsets experienced greater feelings of physical presence, as well as greater feelings of connectedness with the artist, than those that viewed a normal YouTube livestream. In concert 3, attendance through Zoom led to greater experience of social presence, but predicted less connectedness with the artist, compared to a normal YouTube livestream. Crucially, a greater negative impact of COVID-19 (e.g., loneliness) predicted feelings of connectedness with the artist, possibly because participants fulfilled their social needs with this parasocial interaction. Examining data from all concerts suggested that physical presence was a predictor of connectedness with both the artist and the audience, while social presence only predicted connectedness with the audience. Correlational analyses revealed that reductions in loneliness and isolation were associated with feelings of shared agency, physical and social presence, and connectedness to the audience. Overall, the findings suggest that in order to reduce feelings of loneliness and increase connectedness, concert organizers and musicians could tune elements of their livestreams to facilitate feelings of physical and social presence.

Project description:ImportanceAlthough patients with brain metastases receive interdisciplinary and multi-institutional care, the association between neuro-oncologic care networks and patient outcomes remains unknown. As patients often interact with multiple facilities, quantifying this association across a network of hospitals is critical to capture the complexity of the health care journey for patients with brain metastases.ObjectiveTo evaluate how statewide health care network metrics are associated with inpatient mortality and hospital length of stay (LOS) for patients with brain metastases.Design, setting, and participantsThis multicenter, statewide cohort study used data from the 2018 to 2019 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project State Inpatient and Emergency Department Databases. Primary analyses were completed by August 2023. Participants included adults with a brain metastases receiving care in Massachusetts.ExposureAll inpatient and emergency department visits mapped for patients following the first diagnosis of brain metastasis.Main outcomes and measuresInpatient mortality and hospital LOS were the main outcomes assessed. Hospital interdependence in brain metastases care was calculated using a connectedness score (weighted degree: weighted sum of ties to other care facilities). The association between hospital connectedness and clinical outcomes was analyzed using mixed-effects logistic and linear regression models, adjusting for hospital-level features.ResultsIn this cohort study, 4679 patients with brain metastases were identified with inpatient or ED encounters in Massachusetts (from 2018 to 2019). The median (IQR) age was 64 (57-73) years, and 2559 (55%) were female. There was interdependence in brain metastases care, with 993 patients (21%) visiting 2 or more unique hospitals. Highly connected hospitals were heterogeneous, with many being small and one-half lacking subspecialty neuro-oncologic care or teaching status. Increased hospital connectedness was significantly associated with improved inpatient mortality for patients with brain metastases, with the lowest connectedness quartile associated with more than double the risk of mortality compared with the highest quartile (odds ratio, 2.34; 95% CI, 1.33-4.11; P = .003). A stepwise increase in inpatient mortality risk was observed as hospital connectedness decreased, independently of hospital volume. Furthermore, intermediate hospital connectedness was associated with increased hospital LOS (coefficient, 1.08; 95% CI, 0.17-1.95; P = .006).Conclusions and relevanceThis study found that hospital-to-hospital interconnectedness was significantly associated with improved clinical outcomes for patients with brain metastases. The salience of network metrics highlights their potential role alongside other patient-level and hospital-level variables to evaluate and improve oncology care delivery.

Project description:With nearly 11 billion doses of the COVID-19 vaccine being administered, stark differences in the vaccination rates persist. Vaccine distribution initiatives such as COVAX and African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) were formed to ensure equitable vaccine delivery. This review evaluates the initial COVID-19 vaccination efforts and the impact of different vaccine distribution initiatives on equitable vaccination coverage in the early phase. We conducted a descriptive and trend analysis with sub-groups by various context parameters of data on COVID-19 vaccination from December 2020 till February 2022, from four public databases including UNICEF, WHO, COVID-19 Task Force and Our World in Data to examine COVID-19 vaccine distribution progress and the contributions of vaccine procurement initiatives. We found that High Income Countries (HICs) had much higher vaccination rate (78.4%) than Lower-Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) (55.5%) and Low-Income Countries (LICs) (10.9%). Large differentials (>80% to <10%) in the vaccination rates of eligible population of adults in LMICs and LICs existed. Differentials in the total vaccine doses delivered to each country ranged from 355.6% to 4.8% of the total population. In LICs, 53.3% of the total doses were obtained via COVAX, 30.9% by bilateral/multilateral agreements, 6.5% by donations and 3.8% by AVAT. In LMICs, 56.4% of total vaccines procured were via bilateral/multilateral agreements, 21.4% by COVAX, 4.2% by donations and 0.5% by AVAT. COVAX delivered 1 billion doses by January 2022 which constituted 53.2% and 21.4% of procured doses in LICs and LMICs. In LICs and LMICs, 6.5% and 4.2% of total doses were acquired through donations while 30.9% and 56.4% of doses were purchased. Despite global efforts, significant disparities were present in COVID-19 vaccination efforts amongst countries of different income groups. Future efforts should focus on addressing vaccine inequities explicitly and in improving global vaccine distribution.

Project description:Employee welfare represents a critical element of success for companies to remain competitive. Human resources increasingly encompass the management of critical situations that affect the employees' wellbeing. This research analyzes the effect of Human Resource Development (HRD), functions on the effectiveness of crisis management. It is an attempt to include HRD in the theory of Crisis management. Using Structural Equation Models-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) analysis, the study analyzes how training, leadership, organizational strategy, and organizational culture directly positively impact the efficiency of Crisis management (CM) during the Covid-19 crisis in the public entities of Dubai-UAE. In particular, training showed to be the best predictor, followed by the Organizational culture. Organizational structure, Values and uniqueness show no impact on CM within the context of public entities of Dubai-UAE.
