Distribution Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Organochlorine Pesticides in Agricultural Soil from Xiamen City.

ABSTRACT: The concentration and distribution of 15 organochlorine pesticides in the soil of Xiamen City were determined. Overall, among the 15 selected target pesticides, 14 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were detected (hexachlorobenzene was not). The range of detected pesticides was undetected-10.04 ng/g, the total detection rate was 35.2%, and the three pollutants with the highest detection rate in all samples were Heptachlor (66.7%), δ-Hexachlorocyclohexane (60.0%), and p, p'-Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (58.3%). The degree of pollution in descending order was Tong'an > Xiang'an > Jimei > Haicang. Linear regression analysis of soil properties and OCP concentration distribution revealed that OCPs were positively correlated with water content, dissolved organic carbon, and pH and negatively correlated with cation exchange capacity. The origin of OCPs was evaluated using the relationship between the parent compound and its metabolites, with possible new hexachlorocyclohexane and isomer (HCHs) input. By comparing the risk screening values of ΣHCHs and ΣDDTs in "Soil Environmental Quality Standards", the concentrations in all soil samples were lower than the standard values, which indicated that the OCP residues in Xiamen were very low.

Project description:Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii are causative agents of Valley fever, a serious fungal disease endemic to regions with hot, arid climate in the United States, Mexico, and Central and South America. The environmental niche of Coccidioides spp. is not well defined, and it remains unknown whether these fungi are primarily associated with rodents or grow as saprotrophs in soil. To better understand the environmental reservoir of these pathogens, we used a systematic soil sampling approach, quantitative PCR (qPCR), culture, whole-genome sequencing, and soil chemical analysis to identify factors associated with the presence of C. immitis at a known colonization site in Washington State linked to a human case in 2010. We found that the same strain colonized an area of over 46,000 m2 and persisted in soil for over 6 years. No association with rodent burrows was observed, as C. immitis DNA was as likely to be detected inside rodent holes as it was in the surrounding soil. In addition, the presence of C. immitis DNA in soil was correlated with elevated levels of boron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and silicon in soil leachates. We also observed differences in the microbial communities between C. immitis-positive and -negative soils. Our artificial soil inoculation experiments demonstrated that C. immitis can use soil as a sole source of nutrients. Taken together, these results suggest that soil parameters need to be considered when modeling the distribution of this fungus in the environment. IMPORTANCE Coccidioidomycosis is considered a highly endemic disease for which geographic range is likely to expand from climate change. A better understanding of the ecological niche of Coccidioides spp. is essential for generating accurate distribution maps and predicting future changes in response to the changing environment. Our study used a systematic sampling strategy, advanced molecular detection methods, and soil chemical analysis to identify environmental factors associated with the presence of C. immitis in soil. Our results demonstrate the fungus can colonize the same areas for years and is associated with chemical and microbiological soil characteristics. Our results suggest that in addition to climate parameters, soil characteristics need to be considered when building habitat distribution models for this pathogen.

Project description:Pesticides can volatilize from treated soil to the atmosphere causing increased environmental pollution and human exposure. Exposure assessment to airborne pesticides requires reasonable predictions of pesticide emissions. Understanding the volatilization behavior due to changes in environmental conditions can help in assessing the risk uncertainty and designing better mitigation strategies. In this study, we developed a mechanistic model that can be used to predict the hourly volatilization emissions from pesticide-treated soil at different environmental conditions. Pesticide properties and local environmental conditions drive the transport processes at the soil-air interface within the model. The numerical model simultaneously calculates the soil fluxes of heat, moisture, and pesticide at the soil-air interface with inputs of hourly meteorological data. The initial condition of pesticide concentration in soil is obtained from the applied mass during treatment. The numerical model was compared with an analytical model and with field observations for a soil injected fumigant and two surface applied pesticides. The model performance of 14 pesticides under stagnant conditions against the Jury's analytical model showed reasonable agreement with values for the coefficient of determination (R2) ranging from 0.76 to 0.99. The model was a good predictor of the field-scale volatilization of a fumigant (1,3-dichloropropene) application when compared to observations (R =20.8 ). Both the timing of the peak and the temporal variability of the measured volatilization of the fumigant were captured by the model when the fumigant was incorporated at a depth of 46 cm in the soil column. The model also showed reasonable agreement with the measured volatilization of two surface-treated pesticides, though site-specific meteorological data was unavailable for these observations. The results indicate that the modeling approach could be a useful tool to evaluate the impact of location-specific meteorological conditions on the field volatility of pesticides and determine the emissions for risk assessment.
