Short-Term Memory Characteristics of IGZO-Based Three-Terminal Devices.

ABSTRACT: A three-terminal synaptic transistor enables more accurate controllability over the conductance compared with traditional two-terminal synaptic devices for the synaptic devices in hardware-oriented neuromorphic systems. In this work, we fabricated IGZO-based three-terminal devices comprising HfAlO_x and CeO_x layers to demonstrate the synaptic operations. The chemical compositions and thicknesses of the devices were verified by transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy in cooperation. The excitatory post-synaptic current (EPSC), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), short-term potentiation (STP), and short-term depression (STD) of the synaptic devices were realized for the short-term memory behaviors. The IGZO-based three-terminal synaptic transistor could thus be controlled appropriately by the amplitude, width, and interval time of the pulses for implementing the neuromorphic systems.

Auditory short-term memory behaves like visual short-term memory.

Project description:Are the information processing steps that support short-term sensory memory common to all the senses? Systematic, psychophysical comparison requires identical experimental paradigms and comparable stimuli, which can be challenging to obtain across modalities. Participants performed a recognition memory task with auditory and visual stimuli that were comparable in complexity and in their neural representations at early stages of cortical processing. The visual stimuli were static and moving Gaussian-windowed, oriented, sinusoidal gratings (Gabor patches); the auditory stimuli were broadband sounds whose frequency content varied sinusoidally over time (moving ripples). Parallel effects on recognition memory were seen for number of items to be remembered, retention interval, and serial position. Further, regardless of modality, predicting an item's recognizability requires taking account of (1) the probe's similarity to the remembered list items (summed similarity), and (2) the similarity between the items in memory (inter-item homogeneity). A model incorporating both these factors gives a good fit to recognition memory data for auditory as well as visual stimuli. In addition, we present the first demonstration of the orthogonality of summed similarity and inter-item homogeneity effects. These data imply that auditory and visual representations undergo very similar transformations while they are encoded and retrieved from memory.

Interaction and psychological characteristics of art teaching based on Openpose and Long Short-Term Memory network.

Project description:As living standards improve, people's demand for appreciation and learning of art is growing gradually. Unlike the traditional learning model, art teaching requires a specific understanding of learners' psychology and controlling what they have learned so that they can create new ideas. This article combines the current deep learning technology with heart rate to complete the action recognition of art dance teaching. The video data processing and recognition are conducted through the Openpose network and graph convolution network. The heart rate data recognition is completed through the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network. The optimal recognition model is established through the data fusion of the two decision levels through the adaptive weight analysis method. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the classification fusion model is better than that of the single-mode recognition method, which is improved from 85.0% to 97.5%. The proposed method can evaluate the heart rate while ensuring high accuracy recognition. The proposed research can help analyze dance teaching and provide a new idea for future combined research on teaching interaction.

Real-Time PPG Signal Conditioning with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Network for Wearable Devices.

Project description:This paper presents an algorithm for real-time detection of the heart rate measured on a person's wrist using a wearable device with a photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensor and accelerometer. The proposed algorithm consists of an appropriately trained LSTM network and the Time-Domain Heart Rate (TDHR) algorithm for peak detection in the PPG waveform. The Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network uses the signals from the accelerometer to improve the shape of the PPG input signal in a time domain that is distorted by body movements. Multiple variants of the LSTM network have been evaluated, including taking their complexity and computational cost into consideration. Adding the LSTM network caused additional computational effort, but the performance results of the whole algorithm are much better, outperforming the other algorithms from the literature.

Empirical mode decomposition based long short-term memory neural network forecasting model for the short-term metro passenger flow.

Project description:Short-term metro passenger flow forecasting is an essential component of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and can be applied to optimize the passenger flow organization of a station and offer data support for metro passenger flow early warning and system management. LSTM neural networks have recently achieved remarkable recent in the field of natural language processing (NLP) because they are well suited for learning from experience to predict time series. For this purpose, we propose an empirical mode decomposition (EMD)-based long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network model for predicting short-term metro inbound passenger flow. The EMD algorithm decomposes the original sequential passenger flow into several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and a residual. Selected IMFs that are strongly correlated with the original data can be obtained via feature selection. The selected IMFs and the original data are integrated into inputs for LSTM neural networks, and a single LSTM prediction model and an EMD-LSTM hybrid forecasting model are developed. Finally, historical real automatic fare collection (AFC) data from metro passengers are collected from Chengdu Metro to verify the validity of the proposed EMD-LSTM prediction model. The results indicate that the proposed EMD-LSTM hybrid forecasting model outperforms the LSTM, ARIMA and BPN models.

Predicting amyloid proteins using attention-based long short-term memory.

Project description:Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the genetically inherited neurodegenerative disorders that mostly occur when people get old. It can be recognized by severe memory impairment in the late stage, affecting cognitive function and general daily living. Reliable evidence confirms that the enhanced symptoms of AD are linked to the accumulation of amyloid proteins. The dense population of amyloid proteins forms insoluble fibrillar structures, causing significant pathological impacts in various tissues. Understanding amyloid protein's mechanisms and identifying them at an early stage plays an essential role in treating AD as well as prevalent amyloid-related diseases. Recently, although several machine learning methods proposed for amyloid protein identification have shown promising results, most of them have not yet fully exploited the sequence information of the amyloid proteins. In this study, we develop a computational model for in silico identification of amyloid proteins using bidirectional long short-term memory in combination with an attention mechanism. In the testing phase, our findings showed that the model developed by our proposed method outperformed those developed by state-of-the-art methods with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.9126.

Protein remote homology detection based on bidirectional long short-term memory.

Project description:BackgroundProtein remote homology detection plays a vital role in studies of protein structures and functions. Almost all of the traditional machine leaning methods require fixed length features to represent the protein sequences. However, it is never an easy task to extract the discriminative features with limited knowledge of proteins. On the other hand, deep learning technique has demonstrated its advantage in automatically learning representations. It is worthwhile to explore the applications of deep learning techniques to the protein remote homology detection.ResultsIn this study, we employ the Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) to learn effective features from pseudo proteins, also propose a predictor called ProDec-BLSTM: it includes input layer, bidirectional LSTM, time distributed dense layer and output layer. This neural network can automatically extract the discriminative features by using bidirectional LSTM and the time distributed dense layer.ConclusionExperimental results on a widely-used benchmark dataset show that ProDec-BLSTM outperforms other related methods in terms of both the mean ROC and mean ROC50 scores. This promising result shows that ProDec-BLSTM is a useful tool for protein remote homology detection. Furthermore, the hidden patterns learnt by ProDec-BLSTM can be interpreted and visualized, and therefore, additional useful information can be obtained.

Emulating short-term synaptic dynamics with memristive devices.

Project description:Neuromorphic architectures offer great promise for achieving computation capacities beyond conventional Von Neumann machines. The essential elements for achieving this vision are highly scalable synaptic mimics that do not undermine biological fidelity. Here we demonstrate that single solid-state TiO2 memristors can exhibit non-associative plasticity phenomena observed in biological synapses, supported by their metastable memory state transition properties. We show that, contrary to conventional uses of solid-state memory, the existence of rate-limiting volatility is a key feature for capturing short-term synaptic dynamics. We also show how the temporal dynamics of our prototypes can be exploited to implement spatio-temporal computation, demonstrating the memristors full potential for building biophysically realistic neural processing systems.

Can short-term memory be trained?

Project description:Is the capacity of short-term memory fixed, or does it improve with practice? It is already known that training on complex working memory tasks is more likely to transfer to untrained tasks with similar properties, but this approach has not been extended to the more basic short-term memory system responsible for verbal serial recall. Here we investigated this with adaptive training algorithms widely applied in working memory training. Serial recall of visually presented digits was found to improve over the course of 20 training sessions, but this improvement did not extend to recall of either spoken digits or visually presented letters. In contrast, training on a nonserial visual short-term memory color change detection task did transfer to a line orientation change detection task. We suggest that training only generates substantial transfer when the unfamiliar demands of the training activities require the development of novel routines that can then be applied to untrained versions of the same paradigm (Gathercole, Dunning, Holmes, & Norris, 2019). In contrast, serial recall of digits is fully supported by the existing verbal short-term memory system and does not require the development of new routines.

Feature-Based Visual Short-Term Memory Is Widely Distributed and Hierarchically Organized.

Project description:Feature-based visual short-term memory is known to engage both sensory and association cortices. However, the extent of the participating circuit and the neural mechanisms underlying memory maintenance is still a matter of vigorous debate. To address these questions, we recorded neuronal activity from 42 cortical areas in monkeys performing a feature-based visual short-term memory task and an interleaved fixation task. We find that task-dependent differences in firing rates are widely distributed throughout the cortex, while stimulus-specific changes in firing rates are more restricted and hierarchically organized. We also show that microsaccades during the memory delay encode the stimuli held in memory and that units modulated by microsaccades are more likely to exhibit stimulus specificity, suggesting that eye movements contribute to visual short-term memory processes. These results support a framework in which most cortical areas, within a modality, contribute to mnemonic representations at timescales that increase along the cortical hierarchy.
