Interfacial Insight of Charge Transport in BaTiO₃/Epoxy Composites.

ABSTRACT: Space charge accumulation greatly influences the dielectric performance of epoxy composites under high voltage. It has been reported that nano-fillers can suppress the charge accumulation in the bulk of insulation materials. However, it is still unclear how the nano-fillers influence the charge distribution at the interface between the filler and polymeric matrix. In this work, the dielectric properties and the local dynamic charge mobility behavior at the interface of barium titanate/epoxy resin (BTO/EP) composites were investigated from both bulk and local perspectives based on the macroscopic test techniques and in-situ Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) methods. Charge injection and dissipation behavior exhibited significant discrepancies at different interfaces. The interface between BTO and epoxy is easy to accumulates a negative charge, and nanoscale BTO (n-BTO) particles introduces deeper traps than microscale BTO (m-BTO) to inhibit charge migration. Under the same bias condition, the carriers are more likely to accumulate near the n-BTO than the m-BTO particles. The charge dissipation rate at the interface region in m-BTO/EP is about one order of magnitude higher than that of n-BTO/EP. This work offers experimental support for understanding the mechanism of charge transport in dielectric composites.

Project description:Failure in an epoxy polymer composite material is prone to initiate by the coalescence of microcracks in its polymer matrix. As such, matrix toughening via addition of a second phase as rigid or/and rubber nano/micro-particles is one of the most popular approaches to improve the fracture toughness across multiple scales in a polymer composite, which dissipates fracture energy via deformation mechanisms and microcracks arrest. Few studies have focused on tailorable and variable toughening, so-called 'active toughening', mainly suggesting thermally induced strains which offer slow and irreversible toughening due to polymer's poor thermal conductivity. The research presented in the current article has developed an instantaneous, reversible extrinsic strain field via remote electromagnetic radiation. Quantification of the extrinsic strain evolving in the composite with the microwave energy has been conducted using in-situ real-time fibre optic sensing. A theoretical constitutive equation correlating the exposure energy to micro-strains has been developed, with its solution validating the experimental data and describing their underlying physics. The research has utilised functionalised dielectric ferroelectric nanomaterials, barium titanate (BaTiO3), as a second phase dispersed in an epoxy matrix, able to introduce microscopic electro-strains to their surrounding rigid epoxy subjected to an external electric field (microwaves, herein), as result of their domain walls dipole displacements. Epoxy Araldite LY1564, a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A associated with the curing agent Aradur 3487 were embedded with the BaTiO3 nanoparticles. The silane coupling agent for the nanoparticles' surface functionalisation was 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (3-GPS). Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 30%) and acetic acid (C2H4O2, 99.9%) used as functionalisation aids, and the ethanol (C2H6O, 99.9%) used for BaTiO3 dispersion. Firstly, the crystal microstructure of the functionalised nanoparticles and the thermal and dielectric properties of the achieved epoxy composite materials have been characterised. It has been observed that the addition of the dielectric nanoparticles has a slight impact on the curing extent of the epoxy. Secondly, the surface-bonded fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been employed to investigate the real-time variation of strain and temperature in the epoxy composites exposed to microwaves at 2.45 GHz and at different exposure energy. The strains developed due to the in-situ exposure at composite, adhesive and their holding fixture material were evaluated using the FBG. The domain wall induced extrinsic strains were distinguished from the thermally induced strains, and found that the increasing exposure energy has an instantaneously increasing effect on the development of such strains. Post-exposure Raman spectra showed no residual field in the composite indicating no remnant strain field examined under microwave powers < 1000 W, thus suggesting a reversible strain introduction mechanism, i.e. the composite retaining its nominal properties post exposure. The dielectric composite development and quantifications presented in this article proposes a novel active toughening technology for high-performance composite applications in numerous sectors.

Project description:Using low-density solar energy in the environment and converting it into chemical energy that can drive the degradation of organic pollutants is considered to be a very promising strategy for solving the problem of environmental pollution. The efficacy of photocatalytic destruction of organic contaminants is nonetheless constrained by the high composite rate of photogenic carriers, insufficient light absorption and utilization impact, and sluggish charge transfer rate. In this work, we created a new type of heterojunction photocatalyst with a spherical Bi2Se3/Bi2O3@Bi core-shell structure and investigated its degrading properties of organic pollutants in the environment. Interestingly, benefiting from the fast electron transfer capability of the Bi0 electron bridge, the charge separation and transfer efficiency between Bi2Se3 and Bi2O3 is greatly improved. In this photocatalyst, Bi2Se3 not only has a photothermal effect to speed up the process of photocatalytic reaction, but also has fast electrical conductivity of topological materials at the surface, which speeds up the transmission efficiency of photogenic carriers. As expected, the removal performance of the Bi2Se3/Bi2O3@Bi photocatalyst to atrazine is 4.2 and 5.7 times higher than that of the original Bi2Se3 and Bi2O3. Meanwhile, the best samples Bi2Se3/Bi2O3@Bi showed 98.7%, 97.8%, 69.4%, 90.6%, 91.2%, 77.2%, 97.7%, and 98.9% removal of ATZ, 2,4-DCP, SMZ, KP, CIP, CBZ, OTC-HCl, and RhB, and 56.8%, 59.1%, 34.6%, 34.5%, 37.1%, 73.9%, and 78.4% mineralization. Through characterization such as XPS and electrochemical workstations, it is proved that the photocatalytic properties of Bi2Se3/Bi2O3@Bi catalysts are far superior to other materials, and a suitable photocatalytic mechanism is proposed. A novel form of bismuth-based compound photocatalyst is anticipated to be produced as a result of this research in order to address the increasingly critical problem of environmental water pollution in addition to presenting fresh avenues for the creation of adaptable nanomaterials for additional environmental applications.
