Structural and mechanical properties of Si-doped CrN coatings deposited by magnetron sputtering technique.

ABSTRACT: This study successfully deposited Si-doped CrN coatings onto Si (100) substrate by direct current magnetron sputtering. The concentration of Si in the CrSiN coatings was varied by changing the Si target current during deposition. The microstructural and mechanical properties were determined by employing X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and nanoindentation test. According to the results, the coating with 3.3 at.% Si contents (CrSiN-2) show an increase and decrease in the crystallite size and coating surface roughness, respectively, leading to solid solution hardening with an optimum hardness and elastic modulus of 21.37 GPa and 205.68 GPa, respectively. With continued Si addition, the coating roughness increased and the mechanical properties gradually decreased and attained 184.08 GPa and 18.95 GPa for the elastic modulus and hardness of the coating with a maximum Si concentration of 9.2 at.% (CrSiN-5).

Nanoindentation dataset of silicon and hafnia doped silicon coatings produced by magnetron sputtering.

Project description:Mechanical properties of three different coatings comprising of pure silicon, 36 mol% HfO2-doped silicon and 60 mol% HfO2-doped silicon on SiC substrate material were obtained by nanoindentation. The coatings aim at oxidation protective layers in environmental barrier coating systems for SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMC). The examined coatings were produced by physical vapour deposition (magnetron sputtering) and have been tested under cycling conditions between room temperature and 1523 K until 100 h accumulated hot time. In order to measure the hardness and the reduced Young's modulus, a Berkovich tip has been used with a constant depth modulus of 100 nm and 160 nm. Two depth moduli have been chosen to investigate a possible volume impact on the mechanical properties. Six successfully produced indents have been averaged to examine the hardness and reduced Young's modulus. The testing has been done on polished cross sections thereby minimising the impact of the substrate material on the measured values. Enhanced Electrical Properties of Copper Nitride Films Deposited via High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering.

Project description:High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) has generated a great deal of interest by offering significant advantages such as high target ionization rate, high plasma density, and the smooth surface of the sputtered films. This study discusses the deposition of copper nitride thin films via HiPIMS at different deposition pressures and then examines the impact of the deposition pressure on the structural and electrical properties of Cu3N films. At low deposition pressure, Cu-rich Cu3N films were obtained, which results in the n-type semiconductor behavior of the films. When the deposition pressure is increased to above 15 mtorr, Cu3N phase forms, leading to a change in the conductivity type of the film from n-type to p-type. According to our analysis, the Cu3N film deposited at 15 mtorr shows p-type conduction with the lowest resistivity of 0.024 Ω·cm and the highest carrier concentration of 1.43 × 1020 cm-3. Furthermore, compared to the properties of Cu3N films deposited via conventional direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS), the films deposited via HiPIMS show better conductivity due to the higher ionization rate of HiPIMS. These results enhance the potential of Cu3N films' use in smart futuristic devices such as photodetection, photovoltaic absorbers, lithium-ion batteries, etc.

Optically Active TiO2:Er Thin Films Deposited by Magnetron Sputtering.

Project description:Titanium dioxide photoanodes for hydrogen generation suffer from a profound mismatch between the optical absorption of TiO2 and the solar spectrum. To solve the problem of low solar-to-chemical efficiency, optically active materials are proposed. In this work, TiO2 thin films containing erbium were deposited by radio frequency RF magnetron sputtering under ultrahigh vacuum conditions UHV. Morphology, structural, optical and electronic properties were studied. TiO2:Er thin films are homogenous, with uniform distribution of Er ions and high transparency over the visible VIS range of the light spectrum. However, a profound 0.4 eV blue shift of the fundamental absorption edge with respect to undoped TiO2 was observed, which can be attributed either to the size effect due to amorphization of TiO2 host or to the onset of precipitation of Er2Ti2O7 nanocrystals. Near-infrared NIR to VIS up-conversion is demonstrated upon excitation at 980 nm, while strong green photoluminescence at 525 and 550 nm occurs upon photon absorption at 488 nm.

Stoichiometry Dependence of Physical and Electrochemical Properties of the SnOx Film Anodes Deposited by Pulse DC Magnetron Sputtering.

Project description:A batch of Sn oxides was fabricated by pulse direct current reactive magnetron sputtering (pDC-RMS) using different Ar/O2 flow ratios at 0.3 Pa; the influence of stoichiometry on the physical and electrochemical properties of the films was evaluated by the characterization of scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray reflection (XRR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and more. The results were as follows. First, the film surface transitioned from a particle morphology (roughness of 50.0 nm) to a smooth state (roughness of 3.7 nm) when Ar/O2 flow ratios changed from 30/0 to 23/7; second, all SnOx films were in an amorphous state, some samples deposited with low O2 flow ratios (≤2 sccm) still included metallic Sn grains. Therefore, the stoichiometry of SnOx calculated by XPS spectra increased linearly from SnO0.0.08 to SnO1.71 as the O2 flow ratios increased, and the oxidation degree was further calibrated by the average valence method and SnO2 standard material. Finally, the electrochemical performance was confirmed to be improved with the increase in oxidation degree (x) in SnOx, and the SnO1.71 film deposited with Ar/O2 = 23/7 possessed the best cycle performance, reversible capacity of 396.1 mAh/g and a capacity retention ratio of 75.4% after 50 cycles at a constant current density of 44 μA/cm2.

On the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of CrNx/Ag Multilayer Films Prepared by Magnetron Sputtering.

Project description:CrNx/Ag multilayer coatings and a comparative CrNx single layer were deposited via reactive magnetron sputtering. In multilayer coatings, the thickness of each CrNx layer was constant at 60 nm, while that of the Ag layer was adjusted from 3 to 10 nm. Microstructure of the films was characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron spectroscopy. The results suggest that the film containing 3 nm of Ag layer presents a nanocomposite structure comprising fine nano-grains and quasi-amorphous clusters. With Ag layer thickness reaching 4.5 nm and above, Ag grains coalesce to produce continuous an Ag layer and exhibit (111) preferential crystallization. Hardness of the films was detected by nanoindentation and it reveals that with increasing the Ag layer thickness, the hardness continuously decreases from 30.2 to 11.6 GPa. Wear performance of the films was examined by the ball-on-disk test at 500 °C. The result suggests that the out-diffusion of Ag towards film surface contributes to the friction reduction, while the wear performance of films depends on the thickness of the Ag layer.

Biocompatibility and Surface Properties of TiO₂ Thin Films Deposited by DC Magnetron Sputtering.

Project description:We present the study of the biocompatibility and surface properties of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) thin films deposited by direct current magnetron sputtering. These films are deposited on a quartz substrate at room temperature and annealed with different temperatures (100, 300, 500, 800 and 1100 °C). The biocompatibility of the TiO₂ thin films is analyzed using primary cultures of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) of Wistar rats, whose neurons are incubated on the TiO₂ thin films and on a control substrate during 18 to 24 h. These neurons are activated by electrical stimuli and its ionic currents and action potential activity recorded. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD), the surface of TiO₂ thin films showed a good quality, homogeneity and roughness. The XRD results showed the anatase to rutile phase transition in TiO₂ thin films at temperatures between 500 and 1100 °C. This phase had a grain size from 15 to 38 nm, which allowed a suitable structural and crystal phase stability of the TiO₂ thin films for low and high temperature. The biocompatibility experiments of these films indicated that they were appropriated for culture of living neurons which displayed normal electrical behavior.

Low Surface Roughness Graphene Oxide Film Reduced with Aluminum Film Deposited by Magnetron Sputtering.

Project description:Graphene film has wide applications in optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. A novel and facile method was reported for the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) film by electron transfer and nascent hydrogen produced between aluminum (Al) film deposited by magnetron sputtering and hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution for only 5 min, significantly shorter than by other chemical reduction methods. The thickness of Al film was controlled utilizing a metal detection sensor. The effect of the thickness of Al film and the concentration of HCl solution during the reduction was explored. The optimal thickness of Al film was obtained by UV-Vis spectroscopy and electrical conductivity measurement of reduced GO film. Atomic force microscope images could show the continuous film clearly, which resulted from the overlap of GO flakes, the film had a relatively flat surface morphology, and the surface roughness reduced from 7.68 to 3.13 nm after the Al reduction. The film sheet resistance can be obviously reduced, and it reached 9.38 kΩ/sq with a high transmittance of 80% (at 550 nm). The mechanism of the GO film reduction by electron transfer and nascent hydrogen during the procedure was also proposed and analyzed.

Pathways to Tailor Photocatalytic Performance of TiO2 Thin Films Deposited by Reactive Magnetron Sputtering.

Project description:TiO2 thin films are used extensively for a broad range of applications including environmental remediation, self-cleaning technologies (windows, building exteriors, and textiles), water splitting, antibacterial, and biomedical surfaces. While a broad range of methods such as wet-chemical synthesis techniques, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and physical vapor deposition (PVD) have been developed for preparation of TiO2 thin films, PVD techniques allow a good control of the homogeneity and thickness as well as provide a good film adhesion. On the other hand, the choice of the PVD technique enormously influences the photocatalytic performance of the TiO2 layer to be deposited. Three important parameters play an important role on the photocatalytic performance of TiO2 thin films: first, the different pathways in crystallization (nucleation and growth); second, anatase/rutile formation; and third, surface area at the interface to the reactants. This study aims to provide a review regarding some strategies developed by our research group in recent years to improve the photocatalytic performance of TiO2 thin films. An innovative approach, which uses thermally induced nanocrack networks as an effective tool to enhance the photocatalytic performance of sputter deposited TiO2 thin films, is presented. Plasmonic and non-plasmonic enhancement of photocatalytic performance by decorating TiO2 thin films with metallic nanostructures are also briefly discussed by case studies. In addition to remediation applications, a new approach, which utilizes highly active photocatalytic TiO2 thin film for micro- and nanostructuring, is also presented.

Self-passivating (Re,Al)B<sub>2</sub> coatings synthesized by magnetron sputtering.

Project description:(Re0.67Al0.10)B2 and (Re0.74Al0.11)B2 solid solution as well as Re0.85B2 thin films were deposited by hybrid RF-DC magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that all films exhibit the ReB2 (P63/mmc) crystal structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses performed on atmosphere exposed thin film surfaces suggest that ReB2 corrodes, consistent with literature, by forming perrhenic acid (HReO4) already after two days, while (Re0.74Al0.11)B2 forms a self-passivating Al-oxide layer preventing corrosion in a time period ? 60 days. Hence, it is evident that Al additions to ReB2 significantly increase the chemical stability during atmosphere exposure.

Effect of Metallic or Non-Metallic Element Addition on Surface Topography and Mechanical Properties of CrN Coatings.

Project description:Alteration of the phase composition of a coating and/or its surface topography can be achieved by changing the deposition technology and/or introducing additional elements into the coating. Investigation of the effect of the composition of CrN-based coatings (including AlCrN and CrON) on the microparticle height and volume, as well as the construction of correlations between the friction coefficient at the microscale and the geometry of microparticles, are the goals of this study. We use atomic force microscopy (AFM), which is the most effective method of investigation with nanometer resolution. By revealing the morphology, AFM allows one to determine the diameter of the particles, their heights and volumes and to identify different phases in the studied area by contrasted properties. The evaluation of the distribution of mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity E and microhardness H) on the surfaces of multiphase coatings with microparticles is carried out by using the nanoindentation method. It is found that the roughness decreases with an increase in the Al concentration in AlCrN. For the CrON coatings, the opposite effect is observed. Similar conclusions are valid for the size of the microparticles and their height for both types of coating.
