Project description:In this study, polyelectrolyte assembled functionalized graphene oxide (PE-GO) membranes were fabricated through a one-step charge facilitated deposition method for high performance dye/salt separation. According to the intercalation of polydopamine (PDA) and (ionic liquid) IL functional moieties into the GO membranes, the pore size of the resulted PE-pGO and PE-iGO membrane increased from 2.69 nm to 4.13 nm and 6.54 nm, respectively. Correspondingly, a pure water flux of 13.8 ± 2.2, 36.7 ± 3.4, and 52.1 ± 6.7 L m-1 h-1 bar-1 was achieved for PE-GO, PE-pGO and PE-iGO membrane, respectively. PE-iGO membrane with the largest pore size could be operated with significant water permeability (28.3 to 38.3 L m-1 h-1 bar-1) at a low operating pressure range of 0.5⁻2 bar (dye concentration = 100 ppm, salt concentration = 5 g/L). More importantly, functionalities introduced to the GO nanosheets are found to impact the dye adsorption to the membrane surface. The IL intercalation promotes the elution of dye molecules from the IL moieties at elevated pH, therefore enhancing the efficiency of alkaline washing of the membrane. By contrast, the intercalation of PDA weakens such efficiency due to its strong adhesion force to the dye molecules even at the alkaline condition.

Project description:To improve the filtration performance and antifouling properties of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, novel polymer blend UF membranes were fabricated in this study. Carboxylic acid functionalized polysulfone (PSFNA) was synthesized by modifying polysulfone (PSF) with 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA). A series of polymer blend UF membranes were fabricated by adding different amounts of PSFNA into polyethersulfone (PES) to form a homogeneous casting solution. The influences of PSFNA on the morphology, thermal stability, hydrophilicity, filtration performance and antifouling properties of the blend membranes were investigated. The results indicated that by adding PSFNA into PES membranes, the finger-like pores in the membranes became larger, and the porosity and surface hydrophilicity of the membranes were improved. Compared with the pristine PES membrane, PES/PSFNA membranes demonstrated improved filtration performance, resulting in both increased water flux and higher bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection. At a feed pressure of 0.1 MPa, the PES/PSFNA membrane with 4.0 wt% PSFNA had a pure water flux of 478 L m-2 h-1, which was 1.7 times higher compared with the PES membrane (287 L m-2 h-1). In addition, the antifouling properties of PES membranes were also enhanced with the addition of PSFNA. The PES/PSFNA membranes with 3.0 wt% PSFNA had a total fouling ratio (TFR) of 49.6%, as compared with 62.5% for PES membranes.

Project description:Hollow fiber membranes (HFM) are fabricated from blend solutions of a polyethersulfone (PESU) with a sulfonated PESU (sPESU) or a sulfonated polyphenylenesulfone (sPPSU). The influence of different additives in the dope solution and different bore fluids on the HFM are studied. The addition of poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSSNa)/ethylene glycol (EG) to the dope solution results in an increased water flux of the HFM compared to its counterparts without this additive system. The morphology of the hollow fibers is examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The inner surface of the hollow fibers is studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and it is found that water permeation through the hollow fiber membranes is facilitated due to the change in morphology upon the addition of the PSSNa/EG additive system, but not by the presence of hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups on the membrane surface.

Project description:As demand for clean water increases, there is a growing need for effective sustainable water treatment systems. We used the symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) that forms while brewing kombucha tea as a living water filtration membrane (LFM). The LFMs function as ultrafiltration membranes with a permeability of 135 ± 25 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 and a 90% rejection of 30 nm nanoparticles. Because they contain living microorganisms that produce cellulose fibers, the surface of an LFM heals after a puncture or incision. Following punctures or incisions, membrane permeability, after a rapid increase postpuncture, returns to 110-250% of the original flux after 10 days in a growth solution. Additionally, LFMs may be manufactured using readily available materials, increasing membrane production accessibility.

Project description:ZSM-22/polyethersulfone membranes were prepared for salt rejection using modelled brackish water. The membranes were fabricated via direct ZSM-22 incorporation into a polymer matrix, thereby inducing the water permeability, hydrophilicity and fouling resistance of the pristine polyethersulfone (PES) membrane. A ZSM-22 zeolite material with a 60 Si/Al ratio, high crystallinity and needle-like morphologies was produced and effectively used as a nanoadditive in the development of ZSM-22/PES membranes with nominal loadings of 0-0.75 wt.%. The characterisation and membrane performance evaluation of the resulting materials with XRD, BET, FTIR, TEM, SEM and contact angle as well as dead-end cell, respectively, showed improved water permeability in comparison with the pristine PES membrane. These ZSM-22/PES membranes were found to be more effective and superior in the processing of modelled brackish water. The salt rejection of the prepared membranes for NaCl and MgCl2 was effective, while they exhibited quite improved water flux and flux recovery ratios in the membrane permeability and anti-fouling test. This indicates that different amounts of ZSM-22 nanoadditives produce widely divergent influences on the performance of the pristine PES membrane. As such, over 55% of salt rejection is observed, which means that the obtained membranes are effective in salt removal from water.

Project description:Capillary electrophoresis with laser induced fluorescence detection (CE-LIF) was employed for rapid sialic acid speciation, facilitating the quantitative determination of N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) and N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) on glycoproteins. Derivatization of the sialic acids with 2-aminoacridone (2-AMAC), using classical reductive amination in a nonaqueous solvent, led to the spontaneous decarboxylation of the sialic acid residues as determined by CE-LIF and offline mass spectrometric analysis. Modification of both the labeling conditions, to drive the decarboxylation reaction to completion and the CE-LIF parameters to separate the neutral species by complexation with a neutral coated capillary and borate reversed polarity, led to a robust platform for the rapid, sensitive, and quantitative speciation of sialic acids. The method can readily be used for quality control of recombinant biopharmaceuticals.

Project description:Background: Membrane technology has been widely applied for protein purification. In applications for protein separation, a membrane with stable filtration performance is necessary. In this work, two types of hollow fiber membranes with different characteristic were used to study the filtration profile of bovine serum albumin. Methods: A single piece of hollow fiber module was used for ultrafiltration testing using UF0 and UFT304 membranes. Flux and rejection of BSA solution were collected based on a pressure-driven inside filtration model. Results: Ultrafiltration experiments showed that the flux of UFT304 membrane was higher than that of UF0 membrane in all applied pressure condition. Solute rejection reaches 90 and 88% for ultrafiltration of BSA solution on the operating pressure of 0.5 atm using UF0 and UFT304 membranes, respectively. Conclusion: In general, UFT304 membranes has better ultrafiltration performance for BSA separation than UF0 membranes. The UFT304 membrane has a more stable flux for up to two hours of filtration.

Project description:In the realm of hemodialysis, Polyethersulfone (PES) membranes dominate due to their exceptional stability and mechanical properties, capturing 93% of the market. Despite their widespread usage, the hydrophobic nature of PES introduces complications in hemodialysis, potentially leading to severe adverse reactions in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) through protein fouling. Addressing this issue, our study focused on enhancing hemocompatibility by modifying PES surfaces with zwitterionic materials, known for their hydrophilicity and biological membrane compatibility. We investigated the functionalization of PES membranes utilizing various zwitterions in different ratios. Utilizing molecular docking, we examined the interactions of three zwitterionic ligands-carboxybetaine methacrylate (CBMA), sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA), and (2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl) phosphorylcholine (MPC)-with human serum proteins. Our analysis revealed that a 1:1 ratio of phosphobetaine and sulfobetaine exhibits the lowest affinity energy towards serum proteins, denoting an optimal hemocompatibility without the limitations associated with increased zwitterion ratios. Project description:Graphene is a carbon allotrope and possesses numerous unique properties which make it an attractive material in many areas. In this work, graphene oxide (GO) was added to polyethersulfone (PES) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) to improve the performance of hemodialysis membranes. GO was synthesized from tartaric acid by pyrolysis with various temperatures of the pyrolysis and the membrane was fabricated by a casting solution method followed by its characterization. The MMMs showed better mechanical properties than pristine PES with a tensile stress and tensile strain value of 5.55 MPa and 0.039 m, respectively. The hydrophilicity of the membranes which is in agreement with contact angle values showed that GO addition increased the hydrophilicity of the MMMs. Hence, the solute flux and clearance of creatinine gave values of 2.94 L m-2 h-1 and 78.3%, respectively. Cross sectional images and the surface morphology were also recorded using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The resulting data proved that the modified MMMs can be a potential material for hemodialysis.

Project description:Despite extensive research efforts focusing on tackling membrane biofouling, one of the biggest problems associated with membrane technology, there has been little headway in this area. This study presents novel polyethersulfone (PES) membranes synthesized via a phase inversion method at incremental loadings of functionalized oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (OMWCNT) along with 1 wt. % arabic gum (AG). The synthesized OMWCNT were examined using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy for morphological changes compared to the commercially obtained carbon nanotubes. Additionally energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was carried out on the raw and OMWCNT materials, indicating an almost 2-fold increase in oxygen content in the latter sample. The cast PES/OMWCNT membranes were extensively characterized, and underwent a series of performance testing using bovine serum albumin solution for fouling tests and model Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacterial species for anti-biofouling experiments. Results indicated that the composite PES membranes, which incorporated the OMWCNT and AG, possessed significantly stronger hydrophilicity and negative surface charge as evidenced by water contact angle and zeta potential data, respectively, when compared to plain PES membranes. Furthermore atomic force microscopy analysis showed that the PES/OMWCNT membranes exhibited significantly lower surface roughness values. Together, these membrane surface features were held responsible for the anti-adhesive nature of the hybrid membranes seen during biofouling tests. Importantly, the prepared membranes were able to inhibit bacterial colonization upon incubation with both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial suspensions. The PES/OMWCNT membranes also presented more resilient normalized flux values when compared to neat PES and commercial membrane samples during filtration of both bacterial suspensions and real treated sewage effluents. Taken together, the results of this study allude to OMWCNT and AG as promising additives, for incorporation into polymeric membranes to enhance biofouling resistance.
