Project description:Perylenediimides (PDIs) have emerged as potential materials for optoelectronic applications. In the current work, four PDI derivatives, substituted at imide nitrogen with 2,6-diisopropyl phenyl, 2-nitrophenyl, diphenylmethylene, and pentafluorophenyl groups, have been synthesized from perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride using a facile imidization synthesis process. PDI derivatives have been spectroscopically characterized for their structure and optical properties. Temperature-variable absorption and emission spectroscopy study confirmed the H-aggregation property. H-aggregation along with strong emission suggests the slipped π-π stacking of PDI molecules. Electrochemical analysis was performed for their redox behavior and calculation of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels. Scanning electron microscopy showed the formation of ordered structures. The PDI derivatives showed excellent electron conductivity without doping and 5-10× higher electron mobility than that of state-of-the-art fullerene acceptor phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM). Finally, the charge generation and charge transfer phenomenon was studied by transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS). TAS showed ultrafast charge transfer from the poly(3-hexyl)thiophene (P3HT) donor polymer to PDI and formation of long-lived charge-separated states similar to fullerene derivative PC61BM/P3HT blends. Such PDI derivatives with excellent solubility and photophysical and electronic properties are potential n-type materials to be used in organic electronic devices.

Project description:Pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials built upon noncovalent interactions have attracted much attention because of their high efficiency, long lifetime, and stimulus-responsive behavior. However, there are limited reports of noncovalent RTP materials because of the lack of specific design principles and clear mechanisms. Here, we report on a noncovalent material prepared via facile grinding that can emit fluorescence and RTP emission differing from their components' photoluminescent behavior. Exciplex can be formed during the preparation process to act as the minimum emission unit. We found that H-bonds in the RTP system provide restriction to nonradiative transition but also enhance energy transformation and energy level degeneracy in the system. Moreover, water-stimulated photoluminescent ink is produced from the materials to achieve double-encryption application with good resolution.

Project description:Coordination of Cm(iii) with a chiral decadentate ligand N,N,N',N'-tetrakis[(6-carboxypyridin-2-yl)methyl]-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (tpadac) generated complexes with strong luminescence allowing for the unprecedented measurement of well-resolved Cm(iii) circularly polarized luminescence spectra. Quantitative resolution of the electronic structure of the [Cm(tpadac)][K] complexes was achieved at room temperature, highlighting the strength of the combination of luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence spectroscopies to unravel the fundamental electronic structure of Cm(iii). These results are a clear demonstration that these spectroscopies are powerful yet simple tools for the fundamental understanding of electronic structure, which opens the door to future investigations of other Cm(iii) complexes in geometries relevant to nuclear applications, and even other 5f-elements.

Project description:Nuclear magnetic resonance is a "workhorse technique" used in metabolomics, complementary to mass spectrometry. Unfortunately, only the most basic NMR methods are sensitive enough to allow fast medical screening. The most common of them, a simple 1H NMR, suffers from low dispersion of resonance frequencies, which often hampers the identification of metabolites. In this article we show that 1H NMR spectra contain previously overlooked parameters potentially helpful in metabolite identification, namely the rates of temperature-induced changes of chemical shifts. We prove that they are reproducible between various metabolite mixtures and can be determined quickly when Radon transform is used to process the data.

Project description:Thermal properties of nanomaterials are crucial to not only improving our fundamental understanding of condensed matter systems, but also to developing novel materials for applications spanning research and industry. Since quantum effects arise at the nano-scale, these systems are difficult to simulate on classical computers. Quantum computers can efficiently simulate quantum many-body systems, yet current quantum algorithms for calculating thermal properties of these systems incur significant computational costs in that they either prepare the full thermal state on the quantum computer, or they must sample a number of pure states from a distribution that grows with system size. Canonical thermal pure quantum (TPQ) states provide a promising path to estimating thermal properties of quantum materials as they neither require preparation of the full thermal state nor require a growing number of samples with system size. Here, we present an algorithm for preparing canonical TPQ states on quantum computers. We compare three different circuit implementations for the algorithm and demonstrate their capabilities in estimating thermal properties of quantum materials. Due to its increasing accuracy with system size and flexibility in implementation, we anticipate that this method will enable finite temperature explorations of relevant quantum materials on near-term quantum computers.

Project description:High-speed single-molecule tracking in live cells is becoming an increasingly popular method for quantifying the spatiotemporal behavior of proteins in vivo. The method provides a wealth of quantitative information, but users need to be aware of biases that can skew estimates of molecular mobilities. The range of suitable fluorophores for live-cell single-molecule imaging has grown substantially over the past few years, but it remains unclear to what extent differences in photophysical properties introduce biases. Here, we tested two fluorophores with entirely different photophysical properties, one that photoswitches frequently between bright and dark states (TMR) and one that shows exceptional photostability without photoswitching (JFX650). We used a fusion of the Escherichia coli DNA repair enzyme MutS to the HaloTag and optimized sample preparation and imaging conditions for both types of fluorophore. We then assessed the reliability of two common data analysis algorithms, mean-square displacement (MSD) analysis and Hidden Markov Modeling (HMM), to estimate the diffusion coefficients and fractions of MutS molecules in different states of motion. We introduce a simple approach that removes discrepancies in the data analyses and show that both algorithms yield consistent results, regardless of the fluorophore used. Nevertheless, each dye has its own strengths and weaknesses, with TMR being more suitable for sampling the diffusive behavior of many molecules, while JFX650 enables prolonged observation of only a few molecules per cell. These characterizations and recommendations should help to standardize measurements for increased reproducibility and comparability across studies.

Project description:The reaction of fluoride anions with mononuclear rare-earth(III) complexes of the hexaazamacrocycle derived from 2,6-diformylpyridine and ethylenediamine affords trinuclear coordination compounds [Ln3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3. The X-ray crystal structures of these complexes show triplex cationic complexes where the three roughly parallel macrocyclic lanthanide(III) units are linked by bis-μ2-F bridges. The detailed analysis of the photophysical properties of the [Eu3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·2H2O and [Tb3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·3H2O complexes reveals different temperature dependence of luminescence intensity and luminescence decay time of the Eu(III) and Tb(III) derivatives. The spectra of mixed species of average composition [Eu1.5Tb1.5L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·3H2O are in accordance with the ratiometric luminescent thermometer behavior. Measurements of the direct-current (dc) magnetic susceptibility of the [Dy3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·2H2O complex indicate possible ferromagnetic interactions between the Dy(III) ions. Alternating current (ac) susceptibility measurements of this complex indicate single-molecule magnet behavior in zero dc field with magnetic relaxation dominated by Orbach mechanism and an effective energy barrier Ueff = 12.3 cm-1 (17.7 K) with a pre-exponential relaxation time, τ0 of 7.3 × 10-6 s. A similar reaction of mononuclear macrocyclic complexes with a higher number of fluoride equivalents results in polymeric {[Ln3L3(μ2-F)5](NO3)4}n complexes. The X-ray crystal structure of the Nd(III) derivative of this type shows trinuclear units that are additionally linked by single fluoride bridges to form a linear coordination polymer.

Project description:A facile synthetic approach to prepare porous ZnO@CuNi hybrid films is presented. Initially, magnetic CuNi porous layers (consisting of phase separated CuNi alloys) are successfully grown by electrodeposition at different current densities using H2 bubbles as a dynamic template to generate the porosity. The porous CuNi alloys serve as parent scaffolds to be subsequently filled with a solution containing ZnO nanoparticles previously synthesized by sol-gel. The dispersed nanoparticles are deposited dropwise onto the CuNi frameworks and the solvent is left to evaporate while the nanoparticles impregnate the interior of the pores, rendering ZnO-coated CuNi 3D porous structures. No thermal annealing is required to obtain the porous films. The synthesized hybrid porous layers exhibit an interesting combination of tunable ferromagnetic and photoluminescent properties. In addition, the aqueous photocatalytic activity of the composite is studied under UV-visible light irradiation for the degradation of Rhodamine B. The proposed method represents a fast and inexpensive approach towards the implementation of devices based on metal-semiconductor porous systems, avoiding the use of post-synthesis heat treatment steps which could cause deleterious oxidation of the metallic counterpart, as well as collapse of the porous structure and loss of the ferromagnetic properties.

Project description:The synthesis, structural, and photophysical investigations of CuI complexes with a disilanylene-bridged bispyridine ligand 1 are herein presented. Dinuclear (2) and ladder-like (3) octanuclear copper(I) complexes were straightforwardly prepared by exactly controlling the ratio of CuI/ligand 1. Single-crystal X-ray analysis confirmed that dinuclear complex 2 had no apparent π…π stacking whereas octanuclear complex 3 had π…π stacking in the crystal packing. In the solid state, the complexes display yellow-green (λem = 519 nm, Φ = 0.60, τ = 11 µs, 2) and blue (λem = 478 nm, Φ = 0.04, τ = 2.6 µs, 3) phosphorescence, respectively. The density functional theory calculations validate the differences in their optical properties. The difference in the luminescence efficiency between 2 and 3 is attributed to the presence of π…π stacking and the different luminescence processes.
