Interpersonal lending network dataset of a Hungarian village in a disadvantaged region based on a quantitative survey.

ABSTRACT: The dataset presented in this paper consists of a network of interpersonal lending relations from a single village of a deprivated area of Hungary. The data are originated from quantitative surveys from May 2014 to June 2014. The data collection was embedded in a Participatory Action Research (PAR) which aimed to investigate the financial survival strategies of low-income households in a Hungarian village in a disadvantaged region. The directed graphs of lending and borrowing are a unique dataset that empirically captures a hidden and informal financial activity between households. The network contains 164 households and 281 credit connections among them.

Project description:People often have the intuition that they are similar to their friends, yet evidence for homophily (being friends with similar others) based on self-reported personality is inconsistent. Functional connectomes-patterns of spontaneous synchronization across the brain-are stable within individuals and predict how people tend to think and behave. Thus, they may capture interindividual variability in latent traits that are particularly similar among friends but that might elude self-report. Here, we examined interpersonal similarity in functional connectivity at rest-that is, in the absence of external stimuli-and tested if functional connectome similarity is associated with proximity in a real-world social network. The social network of a remote village was reconstructed; a subset of residents underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging. Similarity in functional connectomes was positively related to social network proximity, particularly in the default mode network. Controlling for similarities in demographic and personality data (the Big Five personality traits) yielded similar results. Thus, functional connectomes may capture latent interpersonal similarities between friends that are not fully captured by commonly used demographic or personality measures. The localization of these results suggests how friends may be particularly similar to one another. Additionally, geographic proximity moderated the relationship between neural similarity and social network proximity, suggesting that such associations are particularly strong among people who live particularly close to one another. These findings suggest that social connectivity is reflected in signatures of brain functional connectivity, consistent with the common intuition that friends share similarities that go beyond, for example, demographic similarities.

small RNA NGS based diagnostic survey of Hungarian grapevine rootstock plantations

Project description:Several pathogens infect grapevine, including viruses and viroids. Considering that there are no effective plant protection treatments against these pathogens and vineyards are cultivated through decades usage of high quality and pathogen-free propagation material (rootstocks and scions) is essential. Although presence of regulated pests is routinely checked using ELISA or rarely RT-PCR, these diagnostics methods can detect only particular pathogens moreover can fail to detect variant strains. High-throughput sequencing of small RNAs can be an effective, alternative method to avoid these disadvantages. Since for production of grafts, pathogen free cultivars and rootstocks must be used, 17 grapevine rootstock plantations and 2 rootstock variety collections were selected for characterisation of their virom by high throughput sequencing of virus derived small RNAs.

FinTech and macroeconomics: Dataset from the US peer-to-peer lending platform.

Project description:We aggregate the United States (US) state-level data with LendingClub's loan book covering the period from 2008 to 2019. LendingClub is a FinTech lending company that provides loans through a technology-driven platform. It was one of the pioneering and leading US peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms. Our dataset consists of over two million observations (N=2,703,430) with diverse loan, borrowers and state-specific features. We provide the description of variables, descriptive statistics, and STATA code with the full dataset. The US possesses significant cross-state variation in terms of economic and demographic characteristics while having risk-sharing policies at the federal level to protect states' creditworthiness. This unique feature of our combined database creates an ideal opportunity to explore the P2P lending market within the context of macroeconomic variables. As the dataset covers a 12-year period for all US states, it enables further cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of the FinTech lending market.

Psychometric Network Analysis of the Hungarian WAIS.

Project description:The positive manifold-the finding that cognitive ability measures demonstrate positive correlations with one another-has led to models of intelligence that include a general cognitive ability or general intelligence (g). This view has been reinforced using factor analysis and reflective, higher-order latent variable models. However, a new theory of intelligence, Process Overlap Theory (POT), posits that g is not a psychological attribute but an index of cognitive abilities that results from an interconnected network of cognitive processes. These competing theories of intelligence are compared using two different statistical modeling techniques: (a) latent variable modeling and (b) psychometric network analysis. Network models display partial correlations between pairs of observed variables that demonstrate direct relationships among observations. Secondary data analysis was conducted using the Hungarian Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Fourth Edition (H-WAIS-IV). The underlying structure of the H-WAIS-IV was first assessed using confirmatory factor analysis assuming a reflective, higher-order model and then reanalyzed using psychometric network analysis. The compatibility (or lack thereof) of these theoretical accounts of intelligence with the data are discussed.

A dataset on the geographical distribution, bounds, and reed cover of Hungarian fishponds.

Project description:This paper presents geospatial datasets, figures, and tables illustrating i) the location and total area of fish farms under cultivation; and ii) the spatiotemporal dynamics of reed cover in Hungarian fishponds generated from the published study of Sharma et al., [1]. Preliminary data for fish farm locations were obtained from the Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI), followed by significant refinement based on high-resolution Google Earth Pro-imagery. The fishpond area dataset was validated against the values reported in annual statistical reports on aquaculture. In order to map reed vegetation freely available Sentinel-2 imagery (between 2017 and 2021) was accessed from the Copernicus Open Access Hub [2] and emergent macrophyte cover was classified using the NDVI-based threshold values [1]. Scientists, policymakers, and fish farmers can all benefit from such geospatial datasets. It could be used to monitor the extent of fishponds in Hungary and to design farm-level reed management plans to optimize the provision of ecological and production services.

River dataset as a potential fluvial transportation network for healthcare access in the Amazon region.

Project description:Remote areas, such as the Amazon Forest, face unique geographical challenges of transportation-based access to health services. As transportation to healthcare in most of the Amazon Forest is only possible by rivers routes, any travel time and travel distance estimation is limited by the lack of data sources containing rivers as potential transportation routes. Therefore, we developed an approach to convert the geographical representation of roads and rivers in the Amazon into a combined, interoperable, and reusable dataset. To build the dataset, we processed and combined data from three data sources: OpenStreetMap, HydroSHEDS, and GloRiC. The resulting dataset can consider distance metrics using the combination of streets and rivers as a transportation route network for the Amazon Forest. The created dataset followed the guidelines and attributes defined by OpenStreetMap to leverage its reusability and interoperability possibilities. This new data source can be used by policymakers, health authorities, and researchers to perform time-to-care analysis in the International Amazon region.

Paleoenvironmental multiproxy dataset of the Quaternary abandoned channel in Tovises bed, Great Hungarian Plain.

Project description:To obtain the multiproxy paleoenvironmental dataset from southeast Great Hungarian Plain (GHP), 345 sediment samples were collected at one cm intervals from the cores retrieved from Tovisies bed paleochannel, and six samples were analyzed for 14C dates. The obtained radiocarbon dates were calibrated to calendar ages using the IntCal20 calibration curve. Bayesian statistics within the R bacon 2.5.8 age-depth modeling package were used to establish the age-depth model and it represented the time frame for the entire dataset. The obtained polymodal grain size distribution (GSD) data was unmixed into four EMs using the AnalySize v.1.2.0 algorithm, employing the built-in General Weibull function which helped explain the dynamicity of the endmembers' sedimentation process. To understand the alluviation history, the endmember abundances were correlated with LOI55, LOI950, and magnetic susceptibility. The dataset presented in this article could be of potential reuse for studying the spatial-temporal environmental changes and in geoarchaeological research, providing insights into how human societies adapted to environmental shifts across the southeast GHP.

Network Based Scoring Models to Improve Credit Risk Management in Peer to Peer Lending Platforms.

Project description:Financial intermediation has changed extensively over the course of the last two decades. One of the most significant change has been the emergence of FinTech. In the context of credit services, fintech peer to peer lenders have introduced many opportunities, among which improved speed, better customer experience, and reduced costs. However, peer-to-peer lending platforms lead to higher risks, among which higher credit risk: not owned by the lenders, and systemic risks: due to the high interconnectedness among borrowers generated by the platform. This calls for new and more accurate credit risk models to protect consumers and preserve financial stability. In this paper we propose to enhance credit risk accuracy of peer-to-peer platforms by leveraging topological information embedded into similarity networks, derived from borrowers' financial information. Topological coefficients describing borrowers' importance and community structures are employed as additional explanatory variables, leading to an improved predictive performance of credit scoring models.

Accrual Patterns for Clinical Studies Involving Quantitative Imaging: Results of an NCI Quantitative Imaging Network (QIN) Survey.

Project description:Patient accrual is essential for the success of oncology clinical trials. Recruitment for trials involving the development of quantitative imaging biomarkers may face different challenges than treatment trials. This study surveyed investigators and study personnel for evaluating accrual performance and perceived barriers to accrual and for soliciting solutions to these accrual challenges that are specific to quantitative imaging-based trials. Responses for 25 prospective studies were received from 12 sites. The median percent annual accrual attained was 94.5% (range, 3%-350%). The most commonly selected barrier to recruitment (n = 11/25, 44%) was that "patients decline participation," followed by "too few eligible patients" (n = 10/25, 40%). In a forced choice for the single greatest recruitment challenge, "too few eligible patients" was the most common response (n = 8/25, 32%). Quantitative analysis and qualitative responses suggested that interactions among institutional, physician, and patient factors contributed to accrual success and challenges. Multidisciplinary collaboration in trial design and execution is essential to accrual success, with attention paid to ensuring and communicating potential trial benefits to enrolled and future patients.
