Project description:Shape resonances play a central role in many areas of science, but the real-time measurement of the associated many-body dynamics remains challenging. Here, we present measurements of recoil frame angle-resolved photoionization delays in the vicinity of shape resonances of CF4. This technique provides insights into the spatiotemporal photoionization dynamics of molecular shape resonances. We find delays of up to ∼600 as in the ionization out of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) with a strong dependence on the emission direction and a pronounced asymmetry along the dissociation axis. Comparison with quantum-scattering calculations traces the asymmetries to the interference of a small subset of partial waves at low kinetic energies and, additionally, to the interference of two overlapping shape resonances in the HOMO-1 channel. Our experimental and theoretical results establish a broadly applicable approach to space- and time-resolved photoionization dynamics in the molecular frame.

Project description:We investigated the predissociation dynamics from the [2Π1/2]c5d; 0g + and [2Π3/2]c6d; 0g + Rydberg states of Br2 using the velocity map imaging technique. Two-dimensional scattering images of the fragmented Br+ exhibited an isotropic feature upon the excitation of these Rydberg states. Analysis of the total kinetic energy release suggested the existence of the predissociation pathways to the dissociation limits of Br(5s, 4P3/2) + Br(4p, 2P3/2) and Br(5s, 4P5/2) + Br(4p, 2P3/2) via the 0g + ion-pair states that interact with the lower and/or excited-core Rydberg states lying at long internuclear distance regions thorough the avoided crossing.

Project description:When high-energy radiation passes through aqueous material, low-energy electrons are produced which cause DNA damage. Electronic states of anionic nucleobases have been suggested as an entrance channel to capture the electron. However, identifying these electronic resonances have been restricted to gas-phase electron-nucleobase studies and offer limited insight into the resonances available within the aqueous environment of DNA. Here, resonance and detachment energies of the micro-hydrated uracil pyrimidine nucleobase anion are determined by two-dimensional photoelectron spectroscopy and are shown to extrapolate linearly with cluster size. This extrapolation allows the corresponding resonance and detachment energies to be determined for uracil in aqueous solution as well as the reorganization energy associated with electron capture. Two shape resonances are clearly identified that can capture low-energy electrons and subsequently form the radical anion by solvent stabilization and internal conversion to the ground electronic state. The resonances and their dynamics probed here are the nucleobase-centered doorway states for low-energy electron capture and damage in DNA.

Project description:The reaction between the ground-state hydroxyl radical, OH(2Π), and ethylene, C2H4, has been investigated under single-collision conditions by the crossed molecular beam scattering technique with mass-spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at the collision energy of 50.4 kJ/mol. Electronic structure calculations of the underlying potential energy surface (PES) and statistical Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) calculations of product branching fractions on the derived PES for the addition pathway have been performed. The theoretical results indicate a temperature-dependent competition between the anti-/syn-CH2CHOH (vinyl alcohol) + H, CH3CHO (acetaldehyde) + H, and H2CO (formaldehyde) + CH3 product channels. The yield of the H-abstraction channel could not be quantified with the employed methods. The RRKM results predict that under our experimental conditions, the anti- and syn-CH2CHOH + H product channels account for 38% (in similar amounts) of the addition mechanism yield, the H2CO + CH3 channel for ∼58%, while the CH3CHO + H channel is formed in negligible amount (<4%). The implications for combustion and astrochemical environments are discussed.

Project description:Photocatalytic technology, with features of wide applicability, mild reaction conditions and sunlight availability, satisfies the requirements of "green chemistry". As the star photoanode material for photoelectrochemical catalysis, WO3 has a suitable band gap of 2.8 eV and a strong oxidation capacity, as well as displaying great potential in organic wastewater degradation. However, its performance is usually hindered by competition with water oxidation to generate peroxides, rapid charge complexation caused by surface defect sites, and so on. Herein, WO3 films modified with cobalt-phosphate (Co-Pi/WO3) film were prepared and involved in photocatalytic organic wastewater degradation. A degradation rate constant of 0.63311 h-1 was obtained for Co-Pi/WO3, which was much higher than that of WO3, 10.23 times that of direct photocatalysis (DP) and 23.99 times that of electrocatalysis (EC). After three cycles of degradation, the film can maintain a relatively good level of stability and a degradation efficiency of 93.79%.

Project description:B(C6F5)3·H2O has been long recognized as a common Brønsted acid. The lack of X-ray crystal structure of B(C6F5)3·H2O with other substrates has greatly limited the development of a new catalytic mode. In this work, a complex of B(C6F5)3·H2O and amide 2-phenyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-1(2H)-one with hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions is characterized by X-ray diffraction. Such noncovalent interactions in solution also exist, as verified by NMR, UV-Vis absorption, and fluorescence emission measurements. Moreover, the mixture of amide 2-phenyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-1(2H)-one and B(C6F5)3·H2O, instead of other tested Brønsted acids, shows a tailing absorption band in the visible light region (400-450 nm). Based on the photoactive properties of the complex, a photoredox catalysis is developed to construct α-aminoamides under mild conditions.

Project description:Transmembrane 16A (TMEM16A, anoctamin1), 1 of 10 TMEM16 family proteins, is a Cl- channel activated by intracellular Ca2+ and membrane voltage. This channel is also regulated by the membrane phospholipid phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate [PI(4,5)P2]. We find that two splice variants of TMEM16A show different sensitivity to endogenous PI(4,5)P2 degradation, where TMEM16A(ac) displays higher channel activity and more current inhibition by PI(4,5)P2 depletion than TMEM16A(a). These two channel isoforms differ in the alternative splicing of the c-segment (exon 13). The current amplitude and PI(4,5)P2 sensitivity of both TMEM16A(ac) and (a) are significantly strengthened by decreased free cytosolic ATP and by conditions that decrease phosphorylation by Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII). Noise analysis suggests that the augmentation of currents is due to a rise of single-channel current (i), but not of channel number (N) or open probability (P O). Mutagenesis points to arginine 486 in the first intracellular loop as a putative binding site for PI(4,5)P2, and to serine 673 in the third intracellular loop as a site for regulatory channel phosphorylation that modulates the action of PI(4,5)P2 In silico simulation suggests how phosphorylation of S673 allosterically and differently changes the structure of the distant PI(4,5)P2-binding site between channel splice variants with and without the c-segment exon. In sum, our study reveals the following: differential regulation of alternatively spliced TMEM16A(ac) and (a) by plasma membrane PI(4,5)P2, modification of these effects by channel phosphorylation, identification of the molecular sites, and mechanistic explanation by in silico simulation.

Project description:With the rapid progress in a power conversion efficiency reaching up to 26.1%, which is among the highest efficiency for single-junction solar cells, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells have become a research focus in photovoltaic technology all over the world, while the instability of these perovskite solar cells, due to the decomposition of its unstable organic components, has restricted the development of all-inorganic perovskite solar cells. In recent years, Br-mixed halogen all-inorganic perovskites (CsPbI3-xBrx) have aroused great interests due to their ability to balance the band gap and phase stability of pure CsPbX3. However, the photoinduced phase segregation in lead mixed halide perovskites is still a big burden on their practical industrial production and commercialization. Here, we demonstrate inhibited photoinduced phase segregation all-inorganic CsPbI1.2Br1.8 films and their corresponding perovskite solar cells by incorporating a 1-butyl-1-methylpiperidinium tetrafluoroborate ([BMP]+[BF4]-) compound into the CsPbI1.2Br1.8 films. Then, its effect on the perovskite films and the corresponding hole transport layer-free CsPbI1.2Br1.8 solar cells with carbon electrodes under light is investigated. With a prolonged time added to the reduced phase segregation terminal, this additive shows an inhibitory effect on the photoinduced phase segregation phenomenon for perovskite films and devices with enhanced cell efficiency. Our study reveals an efficient and simple route that suppresses photoinduced phase segregation in cesium lead mixed halide perovskite solar cells with enhanced efficiency.

Project description:Employing π-conjugated anionic groups in molecular construction has been proven to be an effective strategy to find superior ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals over the decades. Herein, unlike the traditional π-conjugated anionic groups, we identify that a π-conjugated cationic group, viz., [C(NH2)3]+, is also an excellent UV NLO-active functional group in theory. Furthermore, we identify a [C(NH2)3]+-containing compound, C(NH2)3ClO4, as a promising UV NLO candidate due to its short UV cutoff edge (200 nm), remarkable second-harmonic generation effect (∼3 × KDP), and moderate birefringence of 0.076@1064 nm. Additionally, C(NH2)3ClO4 has excellent ferroelectric properties and reversal of domains, which also enables it to produce ultraviolet coherent light as short as 200 nm by a quasi-phase matching technique with a periodically poling method. Our study may provide not only a promising UV NLO crystal but also a new π-conjugated functional unit, [C(NH2)3]+, which will open a path to finding new classes of high-performance UV NLO crystals.

Project description:Radioactive iodine is quite mobile in soil and poses threats to human health and the ecosystem. Many materials, including layered double hydroxides (LDH), have been synthesized to successfully capture iodine from aqueous environments. However, limited information is available on the application of LDH in soil to immobilize iodine species. In the present study, the feasibility of using Mg-Al-NO3 LDH for retention of soil iodate (IO3 -) in both batch and column systems was analyzed. The 2 : 1 Mg-Al-NO3 LDH exhibited the greatest removal efficiency of IO3 - from aqueous solution, compared with 3 : 1 and 4 : 1 Mg-Al-NO3 LDH. The Mg2-Al-NO3 LDH demonstrated a strong affinity for IO3 -, with a high sorption capacity of 149 528 mg kg-1 and a Freundlich affinity constant K F of 21 380 L kg-1. The addition of Mg2-Al-NO3 LDH in soil resulted in significant retention of IO3 - in both the batch and column experiments. The affinity parameter K F of soil with the addition of 1.33% Mg2-Al-NO3 LDH was 136 L kg-1, which was 28.6 times higher than soil without LDH added. Moreover, the eluted iodate percentage was only 12.9% in the soil column with the 1.33% Mg2-Al-NO3 LDH addition, whereas almost 43.5% iodate was washed out in the soil column without LDH addition. The results suggested that Mg2-Al-NO3 LDH could effectively immobilize iodate in soil without obvious interference.
