Project description:Single-walled zeolite nanotubes (ZNT) were recently synthesized in a narrow compositional window. ZNT structural features-thin zeolitic walls and large mesopores-can allow for easy access of small molecules to zeolite micropores, but they also impart processing limitations for these materials, such as challenges with conventional aqueous ion-exchange conditions. Conventional solid- and liquid-phase ion exchange of calcined NaOH-derived ZNT (NaH-ZNT) results in structural degradation to either 2D sheet-like phases, 3D nanocrystals, or amorphous phases, motivating different direct synthesis routes and unconventional ion-exchange procedures of uncalcined ZNT precursors. Here, a modified synthesis route for ZNT synthesis is introduced that facilitates facile ion exchange as well as incorporation of additional non-Al heteroatoms in the zeolite framework. Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH) is used as a hydroxide source and co-OSDA, enabling synthesis of new compositions of ZNT, otherwise unachievable by post-modification of previously reported NaH-ZNT. By varying the gel composition, synthesis temperature, crystallization time, hydroxide source, silicon source, and aluminum source, productive conditions for the new TBAOH synthesis are developed, leading to increased strong acid site density in the ZNT. The collected results demonstrate the sensitivity of the ZNT synthesis to many key parameters and show that the ZNT forms only when Si/(Al + T) ∼ 30 in these synthesis gels and with specific Si and Al sources, and always in the presence of trace Na+. Catalytic testing, via the tandem CO2 hydrogenation to methanol and methanol to aromatics reaction, shows that ZNTs provide adequate catalytic activity (acidity), relative to their conventional 3D counterparts in converting methanol to aromatic compounds.

Project description:Aerobic oxidation of native soft wood lignin in an aqueous solution of Bu4NOH facilitates efficient production of vanillin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde), which is one of the platform chemicals in industry. Oxidation of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) wood flour at 120 °C for 4 h under O2 in Bu4NOH-based aqueous solutions produced vanillin in 23.2 wt% yield based on the Klason lignin content of the starting material. This yield was comparable to that in alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation of the same material (27.2%), which indicated that our aerobic oxidation exploited the full potential of the wood flour for vanillin production. Further mechanical investigation with lignin model compounds suggested that the vanillin formation occurred mainly through following successive reactions: alkaline-catalyzed degradation of β-ether linkages in middle units of lignin polymer to form a glycerol end group, oxidation of the glycerol end group by O2 to a HCα[double bond, length as m-dash]O moiety, and release of vanillin from the HCα[double bond, length as m-dash]O end. One of the reasons for the high performance of Bu4NOH for the vanillin production was explained by the general understanding in organic chemistry that Bu4OH is a stronger base than simple alkali, e.g. NaOH. The other more fundamental mechanical aspect was that Bu4N+ suppressed disproportionation of the vanillin precursor (the CαHO end group) probably due to strong interaction between the cation and the HCα[double bond, length as m-dash]O end group.

Project description:Polymers obtained from biomass are an interesting alternative to petro-based polymers due to their low cost of production, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. This is the case of lignin, which is the second most abundant biopolymer in plants. As a consequence, the exploitation of lignin for the production of new materials with improved properties is currently considered as one of the main challenging issues, especially for the paper industry. Regarding its chemical structure, lignin is a crosslinked polymer that contains many functional hydrophilic and active groups, such as hydroxyls, carbonyls and methoxyls, which provides a great potential to be employed in the synthesis of biodegradable hydrogels, materials that are recognized for their interesting applicability in biomedicine, soil and water treatment, and agriculture, among others. This work describes the main methods for the preparation of lignin-based hydrogels reported in the last years, based on the chemical and/or physical interaction with polymers widely used in hydrogels formulations. Furthermore, herein are also reviewed the current applications of lignin hydrogels as stimuli-responsive materials, flexible supercapacitors, and wearable electronics for biomedical and water remediation applications.

In this study, we engineered an OMT to accept a variety of electron-rich phenolic substrates, modified a commercial E. coli strain BL21 (DE3) to regenerate SAM in vivo, and combined it with an engineered ammonia lyase to partake in a one-pot, two whole cell enzyme cascade to produce the l-DOPA precursor l-veratrylglycine from lignin-derived ferulic acid.

Project description:The aim of the present work is the synthesis and characterization of new perfluorinated monomers bearing, similarly to Nafion®, acidic groups for proton transport for potential and future applications in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. To this end, we focused our attention on the synthesis of various molecules with (i) sufficient volatility to be used in vacuum polymerization techniques (e.g., PECVD)), (ii) sulfonic, phosphonic, or carboxylic acid functionalities for proton transport capacity of the resulting membrane, (iii) both aliphatic and aromatic perfluorinated tags to diversify the membrane polarity with respect to Nafion®, and (iv) a double bond to facilitate the polymerization under vacuum giving a preferential way for the chain growth of the polymer. A retrosynthetic approach persuaded us to attempt three main synthetic strategies: (a) organometallic Heck-type cross-coupling, (b) nucleophilic displacement, and (c) Wittig-Horner reaction (carbanion approach). Preliminary results on the plasma deposition of a polymeric film are also presented. The variation of plasma conditions allowed us to point out that the film prepared in the mildest settings (20 W) shows the maximum monomer retention in its structure. In this condition, plasma polymerization likely occurs mainly by rupture of the π bond in the monomer molecule.

Project description:Advances in technology have led to the production of sustainable antioxidants and natural monomers for food packaging and targeted drug delivery applications. Of particular importance is the synthesis of lignin polymers, and graft polymers, dopamine, and polydopamine, inulin, quercetin, limonene, and vitamins, due to their free radical scavenging ability, chemical potency, ideal functional groups for polymerization, abundance in the natural environment, ease of production, and activation of biological mechanisms such as the inhibition of the cellular activation of various signaling pathways, including NF-κB and MAPK. The radical oxygen species are responsible for oxidative damage and increased susceptibility to cancer, cardiovascular, degenerative musculoskeletal, and neurodegenerative conditions and diabetes; such biological mechanisms are inhibited by both synthetic and naturally occurring antioxidants. The orientation of macromolecules in the presence of the plasticizing agent increases the suitability of quercetin in food packaging, while the commercial viability of terpenes in the replacement of existing non-renewable polymers is reinforced by the recyclability of the precursors (thyme, cannabis, and lemon, orange, mandarin) and marginal ecological effect and antioxidant properties. Emerging antioxidant nanoparticle polymers have a broad range of applications in tumor-targeted drug delivery, food fortification, biodegradation of synthetic polymers, and antimicrobial treatment and corrosion inhibition. The aim of the review is to present state-of-the-art polymers with intrinsic antioxidant properties, including synthesis scavenging activity, potential applications, and future directions. This review is distinct from other works given that it integrates different advances in antioxidant polymer synthesis and applications such as inulin, quercetin polymers, their conjugates, antioxidant-graft-polysaccharides, and polymerization vitamins and essential oils. One of the most comprehensive reviews of antioxidant polymers was published by Cirillo and Iemma in 2012. Since then, significant progress has been made in improving the synthesis, techniques, properties, and applications. The review builds upon existing research by presenting new findings that were excluded from previous reviews.

Project description:Investigating the thermophysical properties of substances is crucial for using them as phase change materials (PCMs) and heat transfer fluids (HTFs) in thermal energy applications. In this study, the thermophysical properties of three medium-temperature PCMs (around 338 K) and one ionic liquid, tetrabutylammonium chloride ([N4444 +][Cl-]), were evaluated and compared. The commercial PCMs were two fatty acids (OM65 and stearic acid) and one paraffin (RT64HC). The characterised thermophysical properties were the viscosity, density, phase change temperatures, melting and solidification enthalpies, and thermal conductivity for the solid and liquid phases. The uncertainties for each property were calculated, and two empirical equations were obtained from the correlation of viscosity and thermal conductivity data along isotherms. This paper also compared the thermophysical properties of commercial PCMs and HTFs against the ionic liquid, discussing the potential use of the ionic liquid as a thermal energy storage material and HTFs.

Project description:ObjectivesThe susceptibility of methacrylates to hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation may be a contributing factor limiting the clinical lifespan of resin composite restorations. The elimination of labile ester bonds is a potential advantage of methacrylamides, which have been shown to produce more stable restorative interfaces. The rationale of this study is to design hydrolytically and enzymatically stable adhesive monomers, with the added benefit of being able to form crosslinked networks. The objective of this study was to synthesize difunctional, hybrid methacrylate-methacrylamide monomers, and evaluate them as potential monomers for dental adhesives.Materials and methodsHEMA, TEGDMA (controls) or secondary methacrylamides (HEMAM - commercially available, 2EM and 2dMM - newly synthesized) either bearing a hydroxyl group or a methacrylate functionality (Hybrids-Hy), were added at 40mass% to bisGMA. The photoinitiator system consisted of 2-dimethoxyphenyl acetophenone (DMPA) and diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPI-PF6) at 0.2 and 0.4mass%, respectively. Polymerization kinetics were followed in real-time by near-IR spectroscopy during light activation at 630mW/cm2 for 300s. Water sorption and solubility (WS, SL) were measured according to ISO 4049. Storage modulus in shear (G') for 300s was obtained by oscillatory rheometry. For the microtensile bond strength (μTBS), fully formulated adhesives containing 40vol% ethanol were used to restore caries-free human third molars. Bonded specimens with 1mm2 cross-sectional area were tested after 48h and 6 months storage in water at 37°C. Single bond (SB) was tested as a commercial control. Data were analysed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test and Student's t-test (α=0.05).ResultsIn general, hybrid versions showed lower polymerization rate and degree of conversion, whereas the methacrylate controls, HEMA and TEGDMA, showed the highest values. The hybrid versions showed lower values of WS and SL than their monofunctional versions. HEMAM Hy showed the highest values of G' and TEGDMA, 2EM, and 2dMM-Hy the lowest. The μTBS values between 48h and 6 months were statistically reduced only for the HEMA and both 2dMM materials. The formulation containing the monofunctional methacrylamide (HEMAM) showed only 9% reduction in μTBS after 6 months of aging, while the other groups showed a decrease ranging between 18% and 33%.ConclusionOverall, hybrid monomers showed lower reactivity than their analogous monofunctional versions, but had markedly lower water sorption. Shear storage modulus was affected differently by the addition of the second functionality. HEMAM-containing systems were able to maintain stable long-term dentin bond strength, which demonstrates that bonding stability is a result of the complex interplay among the factors studied.Clinical significanceThe novel monomers showed here are potential alternatives to the current methacrylate adhesives, with selected formulations presenting greater bond stability.

Project description:The charge transport of crystalline organic semiconductors is limited by dynamic disorder that tends to localize charges. It is the main hurdle to overcome in order to significantly increase charge carrier mobility. An innovative design that combines a chemical structure based on sulfur-rich thienoacene with a solid-state herringbone (HB) packing is proposed and the synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and charge transport properties of two new thienoacenes bearing a central tetrathienyl core fused with two external naphthyl rings: naphtho[2,3-b]thieno-[2''',3''':4'',5'']thieno[2″,3″:4',5']thieno[3',2'-b]naphtho[2,3-b]thiophene (DN4T) and naphtho[1,2-b]thieno-[2''',3''':4'',5'']thieno[2'',3'':4',5']thieno[3',2'-b]naphtho[1,2-b]thiophene are presented. Both compounds crystallize with a HB pattern structure and present transfer integrals ranging from 33 to 99 meV (for the former) within the HB plane of charge transport. Molecular dynamics simulations point toward an efficient resilience of the transfer integrals to the intermolecular sliding motion commonly responsible for strong variations of the electronic coupling in the crystal. Best device performances are reached with DN4T with hole mobility up to μ = 2.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 in polycrystalline organic field effect transistors, showing the effectiveness of the electronic coupling enabled by the new aromatic core. These promising results pave the way to the design of high-performing materials based on this new thienoacene, notably through the introduction of alkyl side-chains.
