Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) have raised broad interest because of their great potential in the fluorescence related fields, such as photocatalysis and bioimaging. CDs exhibit different optical properties when dissolved in various solvents. However, the effects of solvents during the process of preparation on the fluorescence emission of CDs are still unclear. In this work, CDs were prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal route. Typical critic acid and thiourea were used as precursors. Through changing the volume ratio of water to N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), we have obtained color tunable CDs, with the emission wavelength from 450 to 640 nm. TEM images, Raman and XPS spectra indicate that the particle size of CDs and the content of surface functional groups (C-N/C-S and C≡N bonds) increase with the increasing ratio of DMF to water, which results in the optimal emission wavelength red-shifted. The prepared multicolor CDs may have prospects in the lighting applications.

Project description:Multicolor fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) have potential applications in multichannel detection and multicolor imaging. In this study, multicolor fluorescent CDs were synthesized by changing the solvent type and adjusting the reactant ratio. The four prepared CDs emitted bright and stable blue (B-), green (G-), yellow (Y-), and red (R-) fluorescence under a single UV light (λ ex = 365 nm). The photoluminescence (PL) emission wavelengths changed from 445 nm for B-CDs to 620 nm for R-CDs, and therefore covered the entire visible spectrum. The absolute quantum yields for the B-, G-, Y-, and R-CDs were 27.3%, 31.1%, 22.9%, and 8.8%, respectively. Characterization of the CDs showed that the differences among the optical features of the four prepared CDs arise from the differences among the surface states and nitrogen-derived structures in the carbon core. The four prepared CDs all showed low toxicity and steady PL, and therefore have potential applications in both in vitro and in vivo imaging.

Project description:The achievements of multicolor photoluminescent (PL)-emissive carbon dots (CDs), particularly red to near infrared (NIR), are critical for their applications in optoelectronic devices and bioimaging, but it still faces great challenges to date. In this study, PL emission red-shifts were observed when tartaric acid (TA) was added into m-phenylenediamine (mPD) or o-phenylenediamine (oPD) solutions as carbon sources to prepare CDs, i.e., from blue to green for mPD and from yellow-green to red for oPD. Morphology and structure analyses revealed that the increased surface oxidation and carboxylation were responsible for the red-shifts of emission, indicating that TA played a key role in tuning the surface state of CDs. These factors could be employed as effective strategies to adjust PL emissions of CDs. Consequently, multicolor PL CDs (i.e., blue-, green-, yellow-green- and red-emissive CDs) can be facilely prepared using mPD and oPD in the absence and presence of TA. Particularly, the obtained red-emissive CDs showed a high PL quantum yield up to 22.0% and an emission covering red to NIR regions, demonstrating great potentials in optoelectronic devices and bioimaging. Moreover, multicolor phosphors were further prepared by mixing corresponding CDs with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), among which the blue, green, and red ones could serve as three primary color phosphors for fabricating multicolor and white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The white LED was measured to show a Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) 1931 chromaticity coordinate of (0.34, 0.32), a high color rendering index (CRI) of 89, and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5850 K, representing one of the best performances of white LEDs based on CDs.

Project description:Carbon dot (CD)-based multi-mode sensing has drawn much attention owing to its wider application range and higher availability compared with single-mode sensing. Herein, a simple and green methodology to construct a CD-based dual-mode fluorescent sensor from the waste biomass of flowers of wintersweet (FW-CDs) for parallel and semi-quantitative visual detection of Cr(VI) and Fe3+ was firstly reported. The FW-CD fluorescent probe had a high sensitivity to Cr(VI) and Fe3+ with wide ranges of linearity from 0.1 to 60 µM and 0.05 to 100 µM along with low detection limits (LOD) of 0.07 µM and 0.15 µM, respectively. Accordingly, the FW-CD-based dual-mode sensor had an excellent parallel sensing capacity toward Cr(VI) and Fe3+ with high selectivity and strong anti-interference capability by co-using dual-functional integration and dual-masking strategies. The developed parallel sensing platform was successfully applied to Cr(VI) and Fe3+ quantitative detection in real samples with high precision and good recovery. More importantly, a novel FW-CD-based fluorescent hydrogel sensor was fabricated and first applied in the parallel and semi-quantitative visual detection of Cr(VI) and ferrous ions in industrial effluent and iron supplements, further demonstrating the significant advantage of parallel and visual sensing strategies.

Project description:The Maillard reaction involves a series of complex reactions; fluorescent compounds have been considered as vital intermediate products of the reaction. In this article, carbon dots (CDs) based on the Maillard reaction (MR-CDs) were prepared with L-tryptophan and D-glucose, and they had excellent photoluminescence stability. MR-CDs showed stable pH-dependence behavior and exhibited an excellent linear response to pH in the range of 4.0-7.5 and 7.5-13.0, respectively. Under the masking effect of sodium fluoride for Fe(III), MR-CDs showed excellent selectivity and sensitivity for Cr (VI). The linear range of Cr(VI) was 0.2-50 μM and the limit of detection was 20 nM. (S/N ≥ 3). Furthermore, MR-CDs were used to detect Cr(VI) in tap water samples. The recoveries were between 95.8% and 98.94%, and RSDs were less than 3.17%.

Project description:Here, a simple one-step hydrothermal-assisted carbonization process was adopted for the preparation of nitrogen/phosphorous-doped carbon dots from a water-soluble polymer, poly 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine (PMPC). By the free-radical polymerization method, PMPC was synthesized using 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and 4,4'-azobis (4-cyanovaleric acid). The water-soluble polymers, PMPC, that have nitrogen/phosphorus moieties are used to prepare carbon dots (P-CDs). The resulting P-CDs were thoroughly characterized by various analytical techniques such as field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), high-resolution transmittance electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy to determine their structural and optical properties. The synthesized P-CDs displayed bright/durable fluorescence, were stable for long periods, and confirmed the enrichment of functionalities including oxygen, phosphorus, and nitrogen heteroatoms in the carbon matrix. Since the synthesized P-CDs showed bright fluorescence with excellent photostability, excitation-dependent fluorescence emission, and excellent quantum yield (23%), it has been explored as a fluorescent (security) ink for drawing and writing (anti-counterfeiting). Further, cytotoxicity study results advised for biocompatibility and thus were used for cellular multicolor imaging in nematodes. This work not only demonstrated the preparation of CDs from polymers that can be used as advanced fluorescence ink, a bioimaging agent for anti-counterfeiting, and cellular multicolor imaging candidate, but additionally prominently opened a new perspective on the bulk preparation of CDs simply and efficiently for various applications.

Project description:Biomass carbon dots (BCDs) have the advantages of being nontoxic, low cost and simple to prepare, have excellent optical properties, good biocompatibility and stability, and therefore have broad application prospects in areas such as heavy metal ion detection and optoelectronic devices. Herein, a simple, green, solvent-free method of preparing BCDs was developed. CDs with certain fluorescence properties were prepared by a solvent-free pyrolysis method at different temperatures using two abundant components (cellulose and lignin) of biomass resources as carbon sources. Both the cellulose CDs prepared at 300°C and the lignin CDs prepared at 350°C exhibited high quantum yields of 11.7% and 23.4%, respectively, a result that was mainly due to the high degree of graphitization. The analysis and results demonstrated the selectivity of CDs for the detection of various metal ion solutions. In particular, CDs are sensitive to Fe3+ and can be used as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of Fe3+, providing a more efficient, sustainable alternative for metal ion detection.

Project description:The photoreduction for hazardous Cr(VI) in industrial wastewater has been considered a "green" approach with low-cost and easy-to-go operation. SnS2 is a promising narrow bandgap photocatalyst, but its low charge carrier separation efficiency should be solved first. In this work, N-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared and loaded onto SnS2 nanoparticles via an in situ method. The resulting composite samples (NC@SnS2) were characterized, and their photocatalytic performance was discussed. SnS2 nanoparticles were obtained as hexagonal ones with a bandgap of 2.19 eV. The optimal doping level for NC@SnS2 was citric acid: urea:SnS2 = 1.2 mmol:1.8 mmol:3.0 mmol. It showed an average diameter of 40 nm and improved photocatalytic performance, compared to pure SnS2, following a pseudo-first-order reaction with a kinetic rate constant of 0.1144 min-1. Over 97% of Cr(VI) was photo-reduced after 30 min. It was confirmed that modification of SnS2 with CQDs can not only improve the light-harvesting ability but also stimulate the charge separation, which therefore can enhance the photoreactivity of SnS2 toward Cr(VI) reduction. The excellent stability of NC@SnS2 indicates that it is promising to be practically used in industrial wastewater purification.

Project description:In recent years, carbon dots (CDs) are promising fluorescence probes for ions detection. In this paper, the CDs which are with an average diameter of 5.5 nm were synthesized through a simple one-step hydrothermal carbonization of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) salt. The CDs have strong yellow photoluminescence (PL) with a maximum emission intensity at 550 nm under an excitation wavelength of 450 nm. As the electron transfer will occur between Cr (VI) and the CDs, yellow fluorescence was quenched after adding the Cr (VI) ions. The CDs probe allows the detection of Cr (VI) ions over a concentration range from 0 to 0.1 M (R 2 = 0.987) and the lower detection limit is 10-5 M. Simultaneously, the CDs show highly selectivity and stability toward the detection of Cr (VI) ions.
