The shape parameters of coal and gangue particles derived from 3D scanning.

ABSTRACT: The irregular shape of mineral particles directly affects the angle of repose, bulk density and flow-properties, and the interaction behaviour between the particles and a contact surface. This paper presents a dataset of spatial data and shape parameters collected from 37 gangue particles and 135 anthracite coal particles, which come from the Shangzhuang Coal Mine. The particle surface models were obtained by a Wiiboox white light raster 3D scanner and Reeyee software. To obtain the scanning surface, each particle was scanned 8 times in different axial rotation directions. The final scanning model was obtained by stacking two scanning surfaces, and the shape parameters, such as length ratio, flatness ratio, and Zingg index, were obtained. This dataset is particularly useful for researchers and engineers who want to investigate the shape of coal and gangue particles or who want to test or benchmark measurement methods concerning the three-dimensional morphology of particles.

Coal gangue recognition based on spectral imaging combined with XGBoost.

Project description:The identification of coal gangue is of great significance for its intelligent separation. To overcome the interference of visible light, we propose coal gangue recognition based on multispectral imaging and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). The data acquisition system is built in the laboratory, and 280 groups of spectral data of coal and coal gangue are collected respectively through the imager. The spectral intensities of all channels of each group of spectral data are averaged, and then the dimensionality is reduced by principal component analysis. XGBoost is used to identify coal and coal gangue based on the reduced dimension spectral data. The results show that PCA combined with XGBoost has the relatively best classification performance, and its recognition accuracy of coal and coal gangue is 98.33%. In this paper, the ensemble-learning algorithm XGBoost is combined with spectral imaging technology to realize the rapid and accurate identification of coal and coal gangue, which is of great significance to the intelligent separation of coal gangue and the intelligent construction of coal mines.

Study on Extraction Valuable Metal Elements by Co-Roasting Coal Gangue with Coal Gasification Coarse Slag.

Project description:Coal gangue (CG) and coal gasification coarse slag (CGCS) possess both hazardous and resourceful attributes. The present study employed co-roasting followed by H2SO4 leaching to extract Al and Fe from CG and CGCS. The activation behavior and phase transformation mechanism during the co-roasting process were investigated through TG, XRD, FTIR, and XPS characterization analysis as well as Gibbs free energy calculation. The results demonstrate that the leaching rate of total iron (TFe) reached 79.93%, and Al3+ achieved 43.78% under the optimized experimental conditions (co-roasting process: CG/CGCS mass ratio of 8/2, 600 °C, 1 h; H2SO4 leaching process: 30 wt% H2SO4, 90 °C, 5 h, liquid to solid ratio of 5:1 mL/g). Co-roasting induced the conversion of inert kaolinite to active metakaolinite, subsequently leading to the formation of sillimanite (Al2SiO5) and hercynite (FeAl2O4). The iron phases underwent a selective transformation in the following sequence: hematite (Fe2O3) → magnetite (Fe3O4) → wustite (FeO) → ferrosilite (FeSiO3), hercynite (FeAl2O4), and fayalite (Fe2SiO4). Furthermore, we found that acid solution and leached residue both have broad application prospects. This study highlights the significant potential of co-roasting CG and CGCS for high-value utilization.

A lightweight coal-gangue detection model based on parallel deep residual networks.

Project description:To realize the accurate identification of coal-gangue in the process of underground coal transportation and the low-cost deployment of the model, a lightweight coal-gangue detection model based on the parallel depth residual network, called P-RNet, is proposed. For the problem of images of coal-gangue taken under complex conditions, the feature extraction module (FEM) is designed using decoupling training and inference methods. Furthermore, for the problem of the nearest neighbor interpolation upsampling method being prone to produce mosaic blocks and edge jagged edges, a lightweight upsampling operator is used to optimize the feature fusion module (FFM). Finally, to solve the problem, the stochastic gradient descent algorithm is prone to local suboptimal solutions and saddle point problems in the error function optimization process, numerous experiments are carried out on selecting the initial learning rate, and the Lookahead optimizer is used to optimize parameters during backpropagation. Experimental results show that the proposed model can effectively improve the recognition effect, with a corresponding low deployment cost.

Spectral band selection and ANIMR-GAN for high-performance multispectral coal gangue classification.

Project description:Low-energy and efficient coal gangue sorting is crucial for environmental protection. Multispectral imaging (MSI) has emerged as a promising technology in this domain. This work addresses the challenge of low resolution and poor recognition performance in underground MSI equipment. We propose an attention-based multi-level residual network (ANIMR) within a super-resolution reconstruction model (ANIMR-GAN) inspired by CycleGAN. This model incorporates improvements to the discriminator and loss function. We trained the model on 600 coal and gangue MSI samples and validated it on an independent set of 120 samples. The ANIMR-GAN, combined with a random forest classifier, achieved a maximum accuracy of 97.78% and an average accuracy of 93.72%. Furthermore, the study identifies the 959.37 nm band as optimal for coal and gangue classification. Compared to existing super-resolution methods, ANIMR-GAN offers advantages, paving the way for intelligent and efficient coal gangue sorting, ultimately promoting advancements in sustainable mineral processing.

Extraction of alumina from alumina rich coal gangue by a hydro-chemical process.

Project description:Vast quantities of gangue from coal mining and processing have accumulated over the years and caused significant economic and environmental problems in China. For high added-value utilization of alumina rich coal gangue (ARCG), a mild hydro-chemical process was investigated to extract alumina. The influences of NaOH concentration, mass ratio of alkali to gangue, reaction temperature and reaction time were systematically studied. An alumina extraction rate of 94.68% was achieved at the condition of NaOH concentration 47.5%, alkali to gangue ratio of 6, reaction temperature of 260°C and reaction time of 120 min. The obtained leaching residues were characterized through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometer. Research confirmed that kaolinite the main alumina-bearing phase of ARCG can be decomposed and transformed to Na8Al6Si6O24(OH)2(H2O)2 and Ca2Al2SiO6(OH)2 at relatively low temperature and short reaction time. Additionally, Na8Al6Si6O24(OH)2(H2O)2 and Ca2Al2SiO6(OH)2 are unstable and will transform to alumina-free phase NaCaHSiO4 under the optimal conditions, which is the major reason for high alumina extraction rates.

Catalytic Degradation of Bisphenol A with a Magnetically Recoverable Geopolymer Composite Using Coal Gangue.

Project description:The widespread presence and use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in aquatic environments has caused significant ecological damage. Coal gangue (CG), a byproduct of coal mining, poses a major environmental concern due to its vast land occupation and potential for pollution. A magnetic recyclable geopolymer (MnFe2O4-CGP) using coal gangue geopolymer (CGP) as the carrier was successfully synthesized and was evaluated for its ability to Fenton-like degrade BPA. The characterization techniques revealed the successful incorporation of spherical MnFe2O4 onto the CGP surface and that CGP serves as an excellent platform for the immobilization and dispersion of MnFe2O4. The degradation rate reached 100% within 60 min at pH = 5, 15 mmol/L H2O2, 0.6 g/L catalyst, and 50 mg/L BPA, significantly higher than MnFe2O4 and CGP alone. It was indicated that the degradation rate of BPA in MnFe2O4-CGP composites was 0.1121 min-1, which was consistent with the first-order kinetic model. The saturation magnetization of MnFe2O4-CGP was measured to be 10.96 emu/g, enabling convenient recovery. MnFe2O4-CGP exhibited excellent stability, as the degradation rate of BPA remained above 95% even after five reaction cycles. This efficiency may be due to the MnFe2O4-CGP induced generation of reactive radicals. Quenching and EPR radical trapping experiments unequivocally confirmed that the reactive radical was hydroxyl radical (•OH). These results indicate that MnFe2O4-CGP has potential application prospects as a magnetic recyclable geopolymer composite in Fenton-like catalysis.

Coal-Derived Humic Substances: Insight into Chemical Structure Parameters and Biomedical Properties.

Project description:An investigation was carried out on humic substances (HSs) isolated from the coal of the Kansk-Achinsk basin (Krasnoyarsk Territory, Russia). The coal HSs demonstrate the main parameters of molecular structure inherent to this class of natural compounds. An assessment was performed for the chemical, microbiological, and pharmacological safety parameters, as well as the biological efficacy. The HS sample meets the safety requirements in microbiological purity, toxic metals content (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic), and radionuclides. The presence of 11 essential elements was determined. The absence of general, systemic toxicity, cytotoxicity, and allergenic properties was demonstrated. The coal HS sample was classified as a Class V hazard (low danger substances). High antioxidant and antiradical activities and immunotropic and cytoprotective properties were identified. The ability of the HS to inhibit hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anion radicals was revealed. Pronounced actoprotective and nootropic activities were also demonstrated in vivo. Intragastric administration of the HS sample resulted in the improvement of physical parameters in mice as assessed by the "swim exhaustion" test. Furthermore, intragastric administration in mice with cholinergic dysfunction led to a higher ability of animals with scopolamine-induced amnesia to form conditioned reflexes. These findings suggest that the studied HS sample is a safe and effective natural substance, making it suitable for use as a dietary bioactive supplement.

Influence of coal gangue mulching with various thicknesses and particle sizes on soil water characteristics.

Project description:Water availability seriously affects vegetation restoration in arid mining areas, and mulching is an effective way to improve soil water conditions. Coal gangue occupies large swathes of land resources, resulting in ecological fragility and various environmental problems. Despite coal gangue having mineral elements similar to those in soil, its potential function as a mulch for soil water conservation has been unclear. Herein, mulching on the surfaces of soil columns with 30 cm height and 15 cm inner diameter was conducted using coal gangue with four particle size ranges (0-0.5, 0.5-1, 1-2, and 2-4 cm) and four thicknesses (4, 8, 12, and 16 cm) under laboratory conditions to investigate water infiltration and evaporation under different conditions. The cumulative infiltration of the treatments with mulching thicknesses of 4 cm (T1), 8 cm (T2), 12 cm (T3), and 16 cm (T4) was 16.1%, 22.9%, 28.6%, and 41.6% greater than that of the control, respectively. The cumulative evaporation of the treatments with particle size ranges of 0-0.5 cm (P1), 0.5-1 cm (P2), 1-2 cm (P3), and 2-4 cm (P4) was 6.5%, 28.6%, 22.9%, and 18.6% lower than the control, respectively. Overall, to enhance the soil water storage capacity in mining areas, the results suggest that coal gangue mulching with a thickness of 8-16 cm and particle size range of 0.5-2 cm is suitable.

Robust SiO2-Al2O3/Agarose Composite Aerogel Beads with Outstanding Thermal Insulation Based on Coal Gangue.

Project description:Advanced SiO2-Al2O3 aerogel materials have outstanding potential in the field of thermal insulation. Nevertheless, the creation of a mechanically robust and low-cost SiO2-Al2O3 aerogel material remains a considerable challenge. In this study, SiO2-Al2O3 aerogel based on coal gangue, which is a type of zero-cost inorganic waste, was constructed in porous agarose aerogel beads, followed by simple chemical vapor deposition of trimethylchlorosilane to fabricate SiO2-Al2O3/agarose composite aerogel beads (SCABs). The resulting SCABs exhibited a unique nanoscale interpenetrating network structure, which is lightweight and has high specific surface area (538.3 m2/g), hydrophobicity (approximately 128°), and excellent thermal stability and thermal insulation performance. Moreover, the compressive strength of the SCABs was dramatically increased by approximately a factor of ten compared to that of native SiO2-Al2O3 aerogel beads. The prepared SCABs not only pave the way for the design of a novel aerogel material for use in thermal insulation without requiring expensive raw materials, but also provide an effective way to comprehensively use coal gangue.
