Project description:A series of nanocomposites of cobalt embedded in N-doped nanoporous carbons, carbon nanotubes or hollow carbon onions have been synthesized by a one-step carbonization of metal-organic-framework ZIF-67. The effect of the carbonization temperature on the structural evolution of the resulting nanocomposites has been investigated in detail. Among the as-synthesized materials, the cobalt/nanoporous N-doped carbon composites have demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activities and durability towards oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline medium. Compared to the benchmark Pt/C catalyst, the optimized Co@C-800 (carbonized at 800 °C) exhibited high oxygen reduction reaction activity with an onset potential of 0.92 V, and a half-wave potential of 0.82 V. Moreover, the optimized Co@C-800 also showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction from water splitting, with a low onset potential of 1.43 V and a potential of 1.61 V at 10 mA cm-2 current density. This work offered a simple solution to develop metal-organic-framework-derived materials for highly efficient electrochemical applications.

Project description:Bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts are essential in the development of low-temperature unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs), as a promising alternative for storing energy via hydrogen. TiO2, as a semiconductor material, is commonly not established as an active electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution due to its poor electrical conductivity and low reactivity. Here, we demonstrated that composites composed of TiO2 and N-doped graphene can be active in oxygen reduction and evolution reactions in an alkaline environment. Combination factors such anatase/rutile interaction, N-doping graphene, and the presence of Ti3+/Ti-N species raise the active sites and improve the electrochemical activity. Our results may afford an opportunity to develop a non-noble and promising electrocatalyst in energy storage technology.

Project description:Highly active and durable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts have been of pivotal importance for renewable energy conversion and storage devices, such as unitized regenerative fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Perovskite-based oxygen electrocatalysts have emerged as promising nonprecious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts, yet their catalytic activity and stability still remain to be improved. We report a high-performance oxygen electrocatalyst based on a triple perovskite, Nd1.5Ba1.5CoFeMnO9-δ (NBCFM), which shows superior activity and durability for oxygen electrode reactions to single and double perovskites. When hybridized with nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO), the resulting NBCFM/N-rGO catalyst shows further boosted bifunctional oxygen electrode activity (0.698 V), which surpasses that of Pt/C (0.801 V) and Ir/C (0.769 V) catalysts and which, among the perovskite-based electrocatalysts, is the best activity reported to date. The superior catalytic performances of NBCFM could be correlated to its oxygen defect-rich structure, lower charge transfer resistance, and smaller hybridization strength between O 2p and Co 3d orbitals.

Project description:An activated carbon nanofiber (CNF) is prepared with incorporated Fe-N-doped graphene nanoplatelets (Fe@NGnPs), via a novel and simple synthesis approach. The activated CNF-Fe@NGnP catalysts exhibit substantially improved activity for the oxygen reduction reaction compared to those of commercial carbon blacks and Pt/carbon catalysts.

Project description:In this work, defect-rich ordered mesoporous spinel oxides, including CoCo2O4, NiCo2O4, and ZnCo2O4, were developed as bifunctional electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER, respectively). The materials are synthesized via nanocasting and modified by chemical treatment with 0.1 M NaBH4 solution to enhance the defect concentration. The synthesized samples have metal and oxygen divacancies (VCo + VO) as the primary defect sites, as indicated by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Cation substitution in the spinel structure induces a higher number of oxygen vacancies. The increased number of surface defects and the synergistic effect between two incorporated metals provide a high activity in both the OER and ORR in the case of NiCo2O4 and ZnCo2O4. Especially, ZnCo2O4 exhibits the highest OER/ORR activity. The defect engineering with 0.1 M NaBH4 solution results in a metal-hydroxylated surface (M-OH) and enhanced the catalytic activity for the post-treated metal oxides in the ORR and OER. This fundamental investigation of the defective structure of the mixed metal oxides offers some useful insights into further development of highly active electrocatalysts through defect engineering methods.

Project description:The Ni2P nanowires were simply synthesized via a rapid one-step hydrothermal approach, in which deionized water, red phosphorus, nickel acetate, and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide were used as the solvent, phosphor and nickel sources, and active agent, respectively. The as-synthesized Ni2P nanowire clusters were composed of uniform nanowires with length of about 10 μm and diameter of about 40 nm. The Ni2P nanowires exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction This work provides good guidance for the rational design of nickel phosphides with unique nanostructures for highly efficient overall water splitting.

Project description:The design of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts showing high catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of great significance for developing new renewable energy storage and conversion technologies. Herein, based on the first principles calculations, we systematically explored the electrocatalytic activity of a series of transition metal atom (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Pd and Pt)-doped ZnS and ZnSe nanostructures for OER and ORR. The calculated results revealed that Ni- and Pt-doped ZnS and ZnSe nanostructures exhibit promising electrocatalytic performance for both OER and ORR in comparison to the pristine ZnS and ZnSe nanostructures. Especially, the OER/ORR overpotentials of Ni-doped ZnS and ZnSe nanostructures are estimated to be 0.28/0.30 and 0.31/0.31 V, respectively, disclosing their great potential as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. Moreover, it is found that Ni-doped ZnS and ZnSe nanostructures for OER and ORR are on the top of the volcano plots, evincing promising catalytic performance. Our results provide theoretical insights into a feasible strategy to synthesize highly efficient ZnS- and ZnSe-based bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts in the future.

Project description:In this report, a facile synthetic route is adopted for typically designing a hybrid electrocatalyst containing boron, nitrogen dual-doped reduced graphene oxide (B,N-rGO) and thiospinel CuCo2S4 (CuCo2S4@B,N-rGO). The electrocatalytic activity of the hybrid catalyst is tested with respect to oxygen evolution (OER) and oxygen reduction (ORR) reactions in alkali. Physicochemical characterizations confirm the unique formation of a reduced graphene oxide-non-noble-metal sulfide hybrid. Electrochemical evaluation by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear-sweep voltammetry (LSV) reveals that the CuCo2S4@B,N-rGO hybrid possesses enhanced ORR and OER activity compared to the B,N-rGO-free CuCo2S4 catalyst. The synthesized CuCo2S4@B,N-rGO hybrid demonstrates remarkable enhancement in catalytic performance with an improved onset potential (1.50 and 0.88 V) and low Tafel slope (112 and 73 mV dec-1) for both OER and ORR processes, respectively. In addition, the catalyst exhibits a diminutive potential difference (0.81 V) between the potential corresponding to the 10 mA cm-2 current density for OER and the half-wave potential for ORR. The superior catalytic activity and high durability of the hybrid material may be attributed to the synergistic effect arising from the metal sulfide and dual-doped reduced graphene oxide. The present study illuminates the possibility of using the dual-doped graphene oxide and metal sulfide hybrid as a competent bifunctional cathode catalyst for renewable energy application.

Project description:Metal organic framework (MOF) derivatives have been extensively used as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. However, the utilization of active sites is still not satisfactory owing to the sluggish mass transport within their narrow pore channels. Herein, interconnected macroporous channels were constructed inside MOFs-derived Co-Nx-C electrocatalyst to unblock the mass transfer barrier. The as-synthesized electrocatalyst exhibits a honeycomb-like morphology with highly exposed Co-Nx-C active sites on carbon frame. Owing to the interconnected ordered macropores throughout the electrocatalyst, these active sites can smoothly "exhale/inhale" reactants and products, enhancing the accessibility of active sites and the reaction kinetics. As a result, the honeycomb-like Co-Nx-C displayed a potential difference of 0.773 V between the oxygen evolution reaction potential at 10 mA cm-2 and the oxygen reduction reaction half-wave potential, much lower than that of bulk-Co-Nx-C (0.842 V). The rational modification on porosity makes such honeycomb-like MOF derivative an excellent bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst in rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Project description:The development of electrochemical devices for renewable energy depends to a large extent on fundamental improvements in catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OERs). OER activity of transition metal sulfides (TMSs) can be improved by compositing with highly conductive supports possessing a high surface-to-volume ratio, such as reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Herein we report on the relationship between synthetic conditions and the OER catalytic properties of TMSs and rGO (TMS–rGO) hybrids. Starting materials, reaction temperature and reaction time were controlled to synergistically boost the OER catalytic activity of TMS–rGO hybrids. Our results showed that (i) compared with sulfides, hydroxides are favourable as starting materials to produce the desired TMS–rGO hybrid nanostructure and (ii) high reaction temperatures and longer reaction times can increase physico-chemical interaction between TMSs and rGO supports, resulting in highly efficient OER catalytic activity.
