Project description:Atomic defects in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as chalcogen vacancies significantly affect their properties. In this work, we provide a reproducible and facile strategy to rationally induce chalcogen vacancies in monolayer MoS2 by annealing at 600 °C in an argon/hydrogen (95%/5%) atmosphere. Synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that a Mo 3d5/2 core peak at 230.1 eV emerges in the annealed MoS2 associated with nonstoichiometric MoSx (0 < x < 2), and Raman spectroscopy shows an enhancement of the ∼380 cm-1 peak that is attributed to sulfur vacancies. At sulfur vacancy densities of ∼1.8 × 1014 cm-2, we observe a defect peak at ∼1.72 eV (referred to as LXD) at room temperature in the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. The LXD peak is attributed to excitons trapped at defect-induced in-gap states and is typically observed only at low temperatures (≤77 K). Time-resolved PL measurements reveal that the lifetime of defect-mediated LXD emission is longer than that of band edge excitons, both at room and low temperatures (∼2.44 ns at 8 K). The LXD peak can be suppressed by annealing the defective MoS2 in sulfur vapor, which indicates that it is possible to passivate the vacancies. Our results provide insights into how excitonic and defect-mediated PL emissions in MoS2 are influenced by sulfur vacancies at room and low temperatures.

Project description:We address the problem of intermolecular interaction energy calculations in molecular complexes with localized excitons. Our focus is on the correct representation of the dispersion energy. We derive an extended Casimir-Polder formula for direct computation of this contribution through second order in the intermolecular interaction operator V̂. An alternative formula, accurate to infinite order in V̂, is derived within the framework of the adiabatic connection (AC) theory. We also propose a new parametrization of the VV10 nonlocal correlation density functional, so that it corrects the CASSCF energy for the dispersion contribution and can be applied to excited-state complexes. A numerical investigation is carried out for benzene, pyridine, and peptide complexes with the local exciton corresponding to the lowest π-π* or n- π* states. The extended Casimir-Polder formula is implemented in the framework of multiconfigurational symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, SAPT(MC). A SAPT(MC) analysis shows that the creation of a localized exciton affects mostly the electrostatic component of the interaction energy of investigated complexes. Nevertheless, the changes in Pauli repulsion and dispersion energies cannot be neglected. We verify the performance of several perturbation- and AC-based methods. Best results are obtained with a range-separated variant of an approximate AC approach employing extended random phase approximation and CASSCF wave functions.

Project description:Thin films of MoS2 bilayer nanoflakes, which are predominantly a single flake thick and with flakes in edge-to-edge contact, have been produced via self-assembled tiling at the planar interface between two immiscible liquids. Films of several square centimeters extent can be produced with a total covered area approaching 90% and over 70% of the film covered by single flakes without overlap. Films produced through liquid/liquid assembly are shown to produce a lower uncovered area fraction and more uniform thickness when compared with films of similar areal coverage produced by the "top-down" techniques of spin coating and spray coating. Statistical analysis of flake coverage data, measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM), shows that liquid/liquid assembly produces a distinctly different variation in film thickness than conventional top-down deposition. This supports the hypothesis that the two-dimensional (2D) confinement of liquid/liquid assembly produces more uniform films. Demonstrator field-effect transistors (FETs) manufactured from the films exhibit mobility and on/off current ratios of 0.73 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 105, respectively, comparable to FETs of similar layout and chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown or mechanically cleaved single-crystal MoS2 channel material. This work demonstrates the use of liquid/liquid interfaces as a useful tool for the self-assembly of high-performance thin-film devices made from dispersions of 2D materials.

Project description:2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 ) has distinct optical and electronic properties compared to aggregated MoS2 , enabling wide use of these materials for electronic and biomedical applications. However, the hazard potential of MoS2 has not been studied extensively. Here, a comprehensive analysis of the pulmonary hazard potential of three aqueous suspended forms of MoS2 -aggregated MoS2 (Agg-MoS2 ), MoS2 exfoliated by lithiation (Lit-MoS2 ), and MoS2 dispersed by Pluronic F87 (PF87-MoS2 )-is presented. No cytotoxicity is detected in THP-1 and BEAS-2B cell lines. However, Agg-MoS2 induces strong proinflammatory and profibrogenic responses in vitro. In contrast, Lit- and PF87-MoS2 have little or no effect. In an acute toxicity study in mice, Agg-MoS2 induces acute lung inflammation, while Lit-MoS2 and PF87-MoS2 have little or no effect. In a subchronic study, there is no evidence of pulmonary fibrosis in response to all forms of MoS2 . These data suggest that exfoliation attenuates the toxicity of Agg-MoS2 , which is an important consideration toward the safety evaluation and use of nanoscale MoS2 materials for industrial and biological applications.

Project description:2D boron nitride (BN) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 ) materials are increasingly being used for applications due to novel chemical, electronic, and optical properties. Although generally considered biocompatible, recent data have shown that BN and MoS2 could potentially be hazardous under some biological conditions, for example, during, biodistribution of drug carriers or imaging agents to the liver. However, the effects of these 2D materials on liver cells such as Kupffer cells (KCs), liver sinusoidal endothelial cells, and hepatocytes, are unknown. Here, the toxicity of BN and MoS2 , dispersed in Pluronic F87 (designated BN-PF and MoS2 -PF) is compared with aggregated forms of these materials (BN-Agg and MoS2 -Agg) in liver cells. MoS2 induces dose-dependent cytotoxicity in KCs, but not other cell types, while the BN derivatives are non-toxic. The effect of MoS2 could be ascribed to nanosheet dissolution and the release of hexavalent Mo, capable of inducing mitochondrial reactive oxygen species generation and caspases 3/7-mediated apoptosis in KUP5 cells. In addition, the phagocytosis of MoS2 -Agg triggers an independent response pathway involving lysosomal damage, NLRP3 inflammasome activation, caspase-1 activation, IL-1β, and IL-18 production. These findings demonstrate the importance of Mo release and the state of dispersion of MoS2 in impacting KC viability.

Project description:Hydrogen energy is considered to be a critical environmentally friendly and widely sourced renewable energy source that can be used as an alternative to fossil fuels. At present, the preparation of hydrogen (H2) mainly depends on traditional fossil fuels. In order to achieve sustainable development of environmental protection, great attention has been paid to the preparation of H2 by electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and photoelectrochemistry. Here, it is reported for the first time that a novel active catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction, consisting of all-2D amorphous nanosheets/2D crystal layer heterojunction structure and without any noble metal (no precious metals are present in the preparation or measuring), is almost entirely fabricated by laser ablation in liquid (LAL) growth of amorphous cobalt sulfide on the surface of multilayered molybdenum disulfide. In acidic media, the amorphous cobalt sulfide nanosheets/multilayered molybdenum disulfide (a-CoS/MoS2) catalyst exhibits fast hydrogen evolution kinetics with onset potential of -147 mV and a Tafel slope of 126 mV per decade, which is much better than only the amorphous cobalt sulfide and molybdenum disulfide layer. The high hydrogen evolution activity of the amorphous cobalt sulfide nanosheets/multilayered molybdenum disulfide hybrid is likely due to the unique electrocatalytic synergistic effects between hydrogen evolution-active amorphous cobalt sulfide nanosheets and layered crystal molybdenum disulfide materials, as well as the much-increased catalytic sites. This work provides a new general route based on all-2D amorphous nanosheets/2D crystal structure for designing and preparing novel layered materials with effectively manipulated catalytic properties and active functionality surface.

Project description:IntroductionThe striking imbalance between the ever-increasing amount of nanomedicines and low clinical translation of products has become the focus of intense debate. For clinical translation, the critical issue is to select the appropriate agents and combination regimen for targeted diseases, not to prepare increasingly complex nanoplatforms.ObjectivesA safe and efficient platform, α-tocopheryl succinate (α-TOS) married 2D molybdenum disulfide, was devised by a facile method and applied for cooperative imaging-guided photothermal-selective chemotherapy of ovarian carcinoma.MethodsA novel platform of PEGylated α-TOS and folic acid (FA) conjugated 2D MoS2 nanoflakes was fabricated for the cooperative multimode computed tomography (CT)/photoacoustic (PA)/thermal imaging-guided photothermal-selective chemotherapy of ovarian carcinoma.ResultsThe photothermal efficiency (65.3%) of the platform under safe near-infrared irradiation is much higher than that of other photothermal materials reported elsewhere. Moreover, the covalently linked α-TOS renders platform with selective chemotherapy for cancer cells. Remarkably, with these excellent properties, the platform can be used to completely eliminate the solid tumor by safe photothermal therapy, and then kill the residual cancer cells by selective chemotherapy to prevent tumor recurrence. More significantly, barely side effects occur in the whole treatment process. The excellent efficacy and safety benefits in vivo lead to the prominent survival rate of 100% over 91 days.ConclusionThe safe and efficient platform might be a candidate of clinical nanomedicines for multimode theranostics. This study demonstrates an innovative thought in precise nanomedicine regarding the design of next generation of cancer theranostic protocol for potential clinical practice.

Project description:In the present study, a novel method has been carried out to grow tungsten (W) doped molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) on the graphene transferred TEM grid in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) setup. Tungsten trioxide (WO3) has been used as a source for 'W' while 'Mo' has been derived from Mo based substrate. Different experimental parameters were used in this experiment. Higher gas flow rate decreases the size of the sample flake and on other side increases the dopant concentrations. The interaction mechanism between Mo, S, W and oxygen (O) have been explored. The influence of oxygen seems to be not avoidable completely which also imposes effective growth condition for the reaction of Mo with incoming sulfur atoms. The difference in the migration energies of Mo, WO3, S clusters on the graphene and the higher reactivity of Mo clusters over other possibly formed atomic clusters on the graphene leads to the growth of W doped MoS2 monolayers. Formation of MoS2 monolayer and the nature of edge doping of 'W' is explained well with the crystal model using underlying nucleation principles. We believe our result provide a special route to prepare W doped MoS2 on graphene substrate in the future.

Project description:The strong light emission and absorption exhibited by single atomic layer transitional metal dichalcogenides in the visible to near-infrared wavelength range make them attractive for optoelectronic applications. In this work, using two-pulse photovoltage correlation technique, we show that monolayer molybdenum disulfide photodetector can have intrinsic response times as short as 3 ps implying photodetection bandwidths as wide as 300 GHz. The fast photodetector response is a result of the short electron-hole and exciton lifetimes in this material. Recombination of photoexcited carriers in most two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides is dominated by nonradiative processes, most notable among which is Auger scattering. The fast response time, and the ease of fabrication of these devices, make them interesting for low-cost ultrafast optical communication links.
