Project description:Discovering a generalized criterion that can predict the mechanical failure of various different structural materials is one of ultimate goals for scientists in both material and mechanics communities. Since the first study on the failure criterion of materials by Galileo, about three centuries have passed. Now we eventually find the "generalized energy criterion", as presented here, which appears to be one universal law for various different kinds of materials. The validity of the energy criterion for quantitatively predicting the failure is experimentally confirmed using a metallic glass. The generalized energy criterion reveals the competition and interaction between shear and cleavage, the two fundamental inherent failure mechanisms, and thus provides new physical insights into the failure prediction of materials and structural components.

Project description:The mechanical function of the uterine cervix is critical for a healthy pregnancy. During pregnancy, the cervix undergoes significant softening to allow for a successful delivery. Abnormal cervical remodeling is suspected to contribute to preterm birth. Material constitutive models describing known biological shifts in pregnancy are essential to predict the mechanical integrity of the cervix. In this work, the material response of human cervical tissue under spherical indentation and uniaxial tensile tests loaded along different anatomical directions is experimentally measured. A deep-learning segmentation tool is applied to capture the tissue deformation during the uniaxial tensile tests. A 3-dimensional, equilibrium anisotropic continuous fiber constitutive model is formulated, considering collagen fiber directionality, fiber bundle dispersion, and the entropic nature of wavy cross-linked collagen molecules. Additionally, the universality of the material model is demonstrated by characterizing previously published mouse cervix mechanical data. Overall, the proposed material model captures the tension-compression asymmetric material responses and the remodeling characteristics of both human and mouse cervical tissue. The pregnant (PG) human cervix (mean locking stretch ζ=2.4, mean initial stiffness ξ=12 kPa, mean bulk modulus κ=0.26 kPa, mean dispersion b=1.0) is more compliant compared with the nonpregnant (NP) cervix (mean ζ=1.3, mean ξ=32 kPa, mean κ=1.4 kPa, mean b=1.4). Creating a validated material model, which describes the role of collagen fiber directionality, dispersion, and crosslinking, enables tissue-level biomechanical simulations to determine which material and anatomical factors drive the cervix to open prematurely. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: In this study, we report a 3D anisotropic hyperelastic constitutive model based on Langevin statistical mechanics and successfully describe the material behavior of both human and mouse cervical tissue using this model. This model bridges the connection between the extracellular matrix (ECM) microstructure remodeling and the macro mechanical properties change of the cervix during pregnancy via microstructure-associated material parameters. This is the first model, to our knowledge, to connect the the entropic nature of wavy cross-linked collagen molecules with the mechanical behavior of the cervix. Inspired by microstructure, this model provides a foundation to understand further the relationship between abnormal cervical ECM remodeling and preterm birth. Furthermore, with a relatively simple form, the proposed model can be applied to other fibrous tissues in the future.

Project description:A primary objective of finite element human body models (HBMs) is to predict response and injury risk in impact scenarios, including cortical bone fracture initiation, fracture pattern, and the potential to simulate post-fracture injury to underlying soft tissues. Current HBMs have been challenged to predict the onset of failure and bone fracture patterns owing to the use of simplified failure criteria. In the present study, a continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model, incorporating observed mechanical response (orthotropy, asymmetry, damage), was coupled to a novel phenomenological effective strain fracture criterion based on stress triaxiality and investigated to predict cortical bone response under different modes of loading. Three loading cases were assessed: a coupon level notched shear test, whole bone femur three-point bending, and whole bone femur axial torsion. The proposed material model and fracture criterion were able to predict both the fracture initiation and location, and the fracture pattern for whole bone and specimen level tests, within the variability of the reported experiments. There was a dependence of fracture threshold on finite element mesh size, where higher mesh density produced similar but more refined fracture patterns compared to coarser meshes. Importantly, the model was functional, accurate, and numerically stable even for relatively coarse mesh sizes used in contemporary HBMs. The proposed model and novel fracture criterion enable prediction of fracture initiation and resulting fracture pattern in cortical bone such that post-fracture response can be investigated in HBMs.

Project description:Fatigue cracking is a common form of flexible pavement distress, which generally starts and spreads through bitumen. To address this issue, self-healing elastomer (SHE) modified bitumens were elaborated to assess whether these novel materials can overcome the neat asphalt (NA) fatigue performance and whether the current failure definition, failure criterion, and fatigue-restoration criteria can fit their performance. All bitumens were subjected to short-term and long-term aging. Linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test, LAS with rest period (LASH), and simplified viscoelastic-continuum-damage (S-VECD) model were utilized to appraise the behavior of the mentioned bitumens. The results showed that maximum stored pseudo-strain energy (PSE) and tau (τ) × N (number of loading cycles) failure definitions exhibited high efficiency to accommodate the fatigue life of NA and SHE-modified bitumens. Both failure criteria identified that SHE-modified bitumen (containing 1% of SHE) showed the highest increment of fatigue performance (67.1%) concerning NA. The failure criterion based on total released PSE, in terms of the area under the released PSE curve, was the only failure concept with high efficiency (R2 up to 0.999) to predict asphalt binder fatigue life. As well, the current framework to evaluate bitumen self-restoration failed to fully accommodate asphalt binder behavior, because bitumen with higher restoration could not exhibit greater fatigue performance. Consequently, a new procedure to assess this property including fatigue behavior was proposed, showing consistent results, and confirming that SHE-modified bitumen (containing 1% of SHE) exhibited the highest increment of fatigue performance (154.02%) after application of the rest period. Hence, the optimum SHE content in NA was 1%. Furthermore, it was found that a greater number of loading cycles to failure (Nf) did not ensure better fatigue performance and stored PSE influenced the bitumen fatigue behavior.

Project description:Use of lithium-ion batteries in transportation necessitates understanding of the cell mechanical response in case of a vehicle accident. Many researchers have access to test equipment to characterize the behavior of cells at low speeds. However, testing batteries at high speeds requires special setups that are not available for many interested parties. In this research, a methodology is proposed for predicting the material response and failure patterns of lithium-ion batteries subjected to high impact based on the experimental results at lower velocities. For this purpose, a constitutive law was proposed and parameters were calibrated for two types of lithium-ion cells, pouch and elliptical. Test results at lower impact velocities (up to 0.5 m s-1) were used for calibrating the constitutive response and the failure criteria. The test data at higher impact velocities of up to 5 m s-1 were used for validation. A Johnson-Cook type strain rate sensitivity model could successfully capture the strain rate hardening response of both cell types. Finite element models were developed for each cell type and empirical linear relationships were found between failure strain and strain rate. For the case of pouch cells, this correlation was negative, whilst there was a positive correlation for elliptical cells. The FE models closely followed the experiments in terms of load-displacement behavior and predicted the peak load and punch displacement at the onset of short circuit with good accuracy.

Project description:Given the importance of hyperelastic constitutive models in the design of engineering components, researchers have been developing the improved and new constitutive models in search of a more accurate and even universal performance. Here, a modified hyperelastic constitutive model based on the Yeoh model is proposed to improve its prediction performance for multiaxial deformation of hyperelastic polymeric materials while retaining the advantages of the original Yeoh model. The modified constitutive model has one more correction term than the original model. The specific form of the correction term is a composite function based on a power function represented by the principal stretches, which is derived from the corresponding residual strain energy when the Yeoh model predicts the equibiaxial mode of deformation. In addition, a parameter identification method based on the cyclic genetic-pattern search algorithm is introduced to accurately obtain the parameters of the constitutive model. By applying the modified model to the experimental datasets of various rubber or rubber-like materials (including natural unfilled or filled rubber, silicone rubber, extremely soft hydrogel and human brain cortex tissue), it is confirmed that the modified model not only possesses a significantly improved ability to predict multiaxial deformation, but also has a wider range of material applicability. Meanwhile, the advantages of the modified model over most existing models in the literatures are also demonstrated. For example, when characterizing human brain tissue, which is difficult for most existing models in the literature, the modified model has comparable predictive accuracy with the third-order Ogden model, while maintaining convexity in the corresponding deformation domain. Moreover, the effective prediction ability of the modified model for untested equi-biaxial deformation of different materials has also been confirmed using only the data of uniaxial tension and pure shear from various datasets. The effective prediction for the untested equibiaxial deformation makes it more suitable for the practice situation where the equibiaxial deformation of certain polymeric materials is unavailable. Finally, compared with other parameter identification methods, the introduced parameter identification method significantly improves the predicted accuracy of the constitutive models; meanwhile, the uniform convergence of introduced parameter identification method is also better.

Project description:To better describe its constitutive relation, we need a new constitutive equation for an important nonlinear elastic material, Mn-Cu damping alloy. In this work, we studied the nonlinear and hysteretic characteristics of the stress-strain curve of the M2052 alloy with the uniaxial cyclic tensile test with constant strain rate. The strain rate and amplitude correlations of M2052 resembled those of nonlinear viscoelastic material. Therefore, we created a new constitutive equation for the M2052 damping alloy by modifying the fractional Maxwell model, and we used the genetic algorithm to carry out numerical fitting with MATLAB. By comparing with the experimental data, we confirmed that the new constitutive equation could accurately depict the nonlinear constitutive relation and hysteretic property of the damping alloy. Taken together, this new constitutive equation for Mn-Cu damping alloy based on the fractional Maxwell model can serve as an effective tool for further studies of the constitutive relation of the Mn-Cu damping alloys.

Project description:Few evidence-based practices, defined as the use of empirically supported research and clinical expertise for children with autism, have been successfully implemented and sustained in schools. This study examined the perspectives of school personnel ( n = 39) on implementing a social engagement intervention for children with autism. Semi-structured interviews, informed by the Domitrovich et al. (2008) framework, were conducted. Participants were asked about (1) school factors that affect the general implementation of evidence-based practices, (2) their specific experiences implementing the social engagement intervention, and (3) barriers to and facilitators of implementing the social engagement intervention. Data were analyzed using an integrated approach. General (e.g. implementation process, leadership, support, and staff) and intervention-specific (e.g. staff, barriers, and facilitators) implementation themes were identified. These findings suggest that a variety of factors should be considered when implementing evidence-based practices in schools and that implementing social engagement interventions for children with autism may require additional specific support for implementation.

Project description:Experimental design applications for discriminating between models have been hampered by the assumption to know beforehand which model is the true one, which is counter to the very aim of the experiment. Previous approaches to alleviate this requirement were either symmetrizations of asymmetric techniques, or Bayesian, minimax, and sequential approaches. Here we present a genuinely symmetric criterion based on a linearized distance between mean-value surfaces and the newly introduced tool of flexible nominal sets. We demonstrate the computational efficiency of the approach using the proposed criterion and provide a Monte-Carlo evaluation of its discrimination performance on the basis of the likelihood ratio. An application for a pair of competing models in enzyme kinetics is given.

Project description:Tractions exerted by cells on their surroundings play an important role in many biological processes including stem cell differentiation, tumorigenesis, cell migration, cancer metastasis, and angiogenesis. The ability to quantify these tractions is important in understanding and manipulating these processes. Three-dimensional traction force microscopy (3DTFM) provides reliable means of evaluating cellular tractions by first measuring the displacement of fluorescent beads in response to these tractions in the surrounding matrix, and then using this measurement to compute the tractions. However, most applications of 3DTFM assume that the surrounding extra-cellular matrix (ECM) is non-fibrous, despite the fact that in many natural and synthetic environments the ECM contains a significant proportion of fibrous components. Motivated by this, we develop a computational approach for determining tractions, while accounting for the fibrous nature of the ECM. In particular, we make use of a fiber-based constitutive model in which the stress contains contributions from a distribution of nonlinear elastic fibers and a hyperelastic matrix. We solve an inverse problem with the nodal values of the traction vector as unknowns, and minimize the difference between a predicted displacement field, obtained by solving the equations of equilibrium in conjunction with the fiber-based constitutive model, and the measured displacement field at the bead locations. We employ a gradient-based minimization method to solve this problem and determine the gradient efficiently by solving for the appropriate adjoint field. We apply this algorithm to problems with experimentally observed cell geometries and synthetic, albeit realistic, traction fields to gauge its sensitivity to noise, and quantify the impact of using an incorrect constitutive model: the so-called model error. We conclude that the approach is robust to noise, yielding about 10% error in tractions for 5% displacement noise. We also conclude that the impact of model error is significant, where using a nonlinear exponential hyperelastic model instead of the fiber-based model, can lead to more than 100% error in the traction field. These results underline the importance of using appropriate constitutive models in 3DTFM, especially in fibrous ECM constructs.
