Analysis of Cadmium Retention Mechanisms by a Smectite Clay in the Presence of Carbonates.

ABSTRACT: Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal with very low permissible exposure limits and is, thus, a very dangerous pollutant for the environment and public health and is considered by the World Health Organisation as one of the ten chemicals of major public concern. Adsorption onto solid phases and (co)precipitation processes are the most powerful mechanisms to retain pollutants and limit their migration; thus, the understanding of these processes is fundamental for assessing the risks of their presence in the environment. In this study, the immobilisation of Cd by smectite clay has been investigated by batch sorption tests, and the experimental data were interpreted with a thermodynamic model, including cation exchange and surface complexation processes. The model can describe the adsorption of Cd in smectite under a wide range of experimental conditions (pH, ionic strength, and Cd concentration). Under the conditions analysed in this study, the precipitation of otavite (CdCO₃) is shown to have a limited contribution to Cd immobilisation.

Project description:The excess of orbital detection of smectite deposits compared to carbonate deposits on the martian surface presents an enigma because smectite and carbonate formations are both favored alteration products of basalt under neutral to alkaline conditions. We propose that Mars experienced acidic events caused by sulfuric acid (H2SO4) that permitted phyllosilicate, but inhibited carbonate, formation. To experimentally verify this hypothesis, we report the first synthesis of smectite from Mars-analogue glass-rich basalt simulant (66 wt% glass, 32 wt% olivine, 2 wt% chromite) in the presence of H2SO4 under hydrothermal conditions (~200 °C). Smectites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, visible and near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy and electron microprobe to characterize mineralogy and chemical composition. Solution chemistry was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Basalt simulant suspensions in 11-42 mM H2SO4 were acidic with pH ≤ 2 at the beginning of incubation and varied from acidic (pH 1.8) to mildly alkaline (pH 8.4) at the end of incubation. Alteration of glass phase during reaction of the basalt simulant with H2SO4 led to formation of the dioctahedral smectite at final pH ~3 and trioctahedral smectite saponite at final pH ~4 and higher. Anhydrite and hematite formed in the final pH range from 1.8 to 8.4 while natroalunite was detected at pH 1.8. Hematite was precipitated as a result of oxidative dissolution of olivine present in Adirondack basalt simulant. Formation of secondary phases, including smectite, resulted in release of variable amounts of Si, Mg, Na and Ca while solubilization of Al and Fe was low. Comparison of mineralogical and solution chemistry data indicated that the type of smectite (i.e., dioctahedral vs trioctahedral) was likely controlled by Mg leaching from altering basalt and substantial Mg loss created favorable conditions for formation of dioctahedral smectite. We present a model for global-scale smectite formation on Mars via acid-sulfate conditions created by the volcanic outgassing of SO2 in the Noachian and early Hesperian.

Project description:Accurate determination of clay minerals can be challenging due to the natural occurrence of interlayered phases, i.e., layers of different clay species such as illite and smectite. The overlap of peaks of the constituent minerals (e.g., illite and smectite), and the similarity of diffraction patterns when not treated with ethylene glycol, hampers identification, especially when the clay content is low. We investigated the occurrence of interlayered illite/smectite in a rock sample from Rodalquilar, Spain, using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and reflectance spectroscopy in the short-wave infrared wavelength range. For the first time, a precise determination of interlayered I/S conducted on the extracted clay fraction treated with ethylene glycol using such different approaches was provided. X-ray diffraction results demonstrated the presence of an I/S peak at around 8.4° in the untreated fraction coupled with a peak splitting at 6.7° and 9.4° 2θ when solvated with ethylene glycol. While spectroscopy indicated the occurrence of interlayered structures as a mixture of the two constituent minerals, the results of X-ray analysis showed that the interlayered clay consisted of two discrete phases (illite and smectite). The two discrete phases were observed in both the whole rock analysis and in the extracted clay fraction. This study shows that X-ray diffraction and validation with a scanning electron microscope is a mandatory, integrating tool for detecting interlayered phases since reflectance spectroscopy alone cannot be used to differentiate between interlayered clay minerals and non-interlayered mixtures. This work highlights the limits and advantages of three sensors (X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and reflectance spectroscopy) to investigate clay mixtures and interlayering, representing a significant contribution to confidence in the interpretation of interlayered clays, this being essential in mineral exploration and prospecting.

Project description:Polymer-clay nanocomposites have greater thermal stability compared to the pristine polymer matrix. This can be attributed to the physical barrier provided by the inclusion of 2D clay nanoparticles (especially of the smectite group), together with radical trapping related to the distribution of specific 3d atoms in the inorganic phase. To elucidate the relevance of the Fe3+ distribution in this synergic effect, the iron atoms present in octahedral sheets of natural nontronite clay (Non, 5.6 wt % Fe) or in maghemite (M) nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3) were incorporated in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix. Na-laponite (Lap) clay was used to evaluate the contribution of the diffusion barrier effect to the increased thermal stability of a PMMA-Lap nanocomposite, as evidenced by the upshift of the thermogravimetric (TGA) curve compared to that for PMMA. The contribution of radical trapping to the thermal stability of the PMMA-Non nanocomposite was evidenced by a significant shift of the Fe K-edge rising edge position by -4.5 eV after iron reduction by heating in N2, while similar treatment of pristine nontronite did not lead to a significant rising edge shift in the X-ray absorption spectra (XAS). This downshift demonstrated the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe0, induced by the sequestration of radicals formed by PMMA depolymerization. Raman spectroscopy analysis evidenced the formation of graphitic char deposits above 400 °C, further improving the thermal stability of PMMA-Non by providing an additional physical barrier to mass transport. A fourth contribution of well-dispersed iron was the abstraction of carbon from the char by the iron carburization reaction, which hindered CO2 formation by oxidative coking. In contrast, no relevant contribution of graphitic layer deposition was observed for the PMMA-M-Lap nanocomposite, where its improved thermal stability was only due to the combined contributions of the gas diffusion barrier effect and radical trapping by iron atoms. The maghemite effectively captured the radicals confined by the clay sheets, resulting in significant stabilization of the nanocomposite, with a shift of the mass loss of the PMMA-M-Lap nanocomposite compared to PMMA-Lap.
