Rats move nesting materials to create different functional areas: Short report.

ABSTRACT: Here we document how rats separate their living space into different functional regions. Five groups of four female Sprague Dawley rats were housed in caging systems that consisted of two standard cages connected by a tube. Both cages were provided with the same amount of bedding and nesting materials, but only one contained food and water. Nesting cover and weight of each cage were measured once a week for five weeks during cage cleaning. We found that the cages with food and water had 9% less nesting material coverage but had gained 90% more weight when compared with cages where food and water were absent. These results indicate that, when provided with separate spaces, rats move nesting materials away from the cage containing food and water sources, but preferentially excrete in the cage with water and food.

Communally Nesting Migratory Birds Create Ecological Hot-Spots in Tropical Australia.

Project description:Large numbers of metallic starlings (Aplonis metallica) migrate annually from New Guinea to the rainforests of tropical Australia, where they nest communally in single emergent trees (up to 1,000 birds). These aggregations create dense and species-rich faunal "hot-spots", attracting a diverse assemblage of local consumers that utilise this seasonal resource. The starlings nested primarily in poison-dart trees (Antiaris toxicaria) near the rainforest-woodland boundary. Surveys underneath these colonies revealed that bird-derived nutrients massively increased densities of soil invertebrates and mammals (primarily wild pigs) beneath trees, year-round. Flying invertebrates, nocturnal birds, reptiles, and amphibians congregated beneath the trees when starlings were nesting (the wet-season). Diurnal birds (primarily cockatoos and bush turkeys) aggregated beneath the trees during the dry-season to utilise residual nutrients when the starlings were not nesting. The abundance of several taxa was considerably higher (to > 1000-fold) under colony trees than under nearby trees. The system strikingly resembles utilisation of bird nesting colonies by predators in other parts of the world but this spectacular system has never been described, emphasizing the continuing need for detailed natural-history studies in tropical Australia.

Invasive brown treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) move short distances and have small activity areas in a high prey environment.

Project description:Animal movements reflect temporal and spatial availability of resources as well as when, where, and how individuals access such resources. To test these relationships for a predatory reptile, we quantified the effects of prey abundance on the spatial ecology of invasive brown treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) on Guam. Five months after toxicant-mediated suppression of a brown treesnake population, we simultaneously used visual encounter surveys to generate relative rodent abundance and radiotelemetry of snakes to document movements of surviving snakes. After snake suppression, encounter rates for small mammals increased 22-fold and brown treesnakes had smaller mean daily movement distances (24 ± 13 m/day, [Formula: see text] ± SD) and activity areas (5.47 ± 5 ha) than all previous observations. Additionally, snakes frequenting forest edges, where our small mammal encounters were the highest, had smaller mean daily movement distances and three-dimensional activity volumes compared to those within the forest interior. Collectively, these results suggest that reduced movements by snakes were in part a response to increased prey availability. The impact of prey availability on snake movement may be a management consideration when attempting to control cryptic invasive species using tools that rely on movement of the target species to be effective.

An Investigation into the Influence of Different Types of Nesting Materials upon the Welfare of Captive Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Project description:Ensuring the welfare of captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) is crucial, in part because they can act as a conservation resource in the case of wild populations becoming extinct. One strategy often adopted to ensure animal welfare is environmental enrichment. In this study, we investigated the impact of different nesting materials (leaves and branches, long grass, cotton sheets, and shredded newspaper) upon the welfare of chimpanzees housed at Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (Sierra Leone). Data was collected on 20 subjects (aged 4 to 15 years) between November 2019 and March 2020. Welfare was based on individuals' relative frequency of affiliative, abnormal and agonistic behaviours, as well as their social and behavioural competence. We found that individuals' welfare was higher when presented with nesting materials (compared to the control and post-treatment conditions), particularly when given shredded newspaper, regardless of whether the material was presented separately or in conjunction with another. In addition, welfare was highest: during the morning (vs evening); in groups of older individuals (vs younger); with females engaging in less agonistic behaviours compared to males; and males displaying relatively higher behavioural competence. Our results support previous research that captive chimpanzees be supplied with destructible nesting materials, and demonstrate that synthetic enrichments can indeed have a more positive impact upon welfare than their natural alternatives.

Calcification of Various Bioprosthetic Materials in Rats: Is It Really Different?

Project description:The causes of heart valve bioprosthetic calcification are still not clear. In this paper, we compared the calcification in the porcine aorta (Ao) and the bovine jugular vein (Ve) walls, as well as the bovine pericardium (Pe). Biomaterials were crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) and diepoxide (DE), after which they were implanted subcutaneously in young rats for 10, 20, and 30 days. Collagen, elastin, and fibrillin were visualized in non-implanted samples. Atomic absorption spectroscopy, histological methods, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to study the dynamics of calcification. By the 30th day, calcium accumulated most intensively in the collagen fibers of the GA-Pe. In elastin-rich materials, calcium deposits were associated with elastin fibers and localized differences in the walls of Ao and Ve. The DE-Pe did not calcify at all for 30 days. Alkaline phosphatase does not affect calcification since it was not found in the implant tissue. Fibrillin surrounds elastin fibers in the Ao and Ve, but its involvement in calcification is questionable. In the subcutaneous space of young rats, which are used to model the implants’ calcification, the content of phosphorus was five times higher than in aging animals. We hypothesize that the centers of calcium phosphate nucleation are the positively charged nitrogen of the pyridinium rings, which is the main one in fresh elastin and appears in collagen as a result of GA preservation. Nucleation can be significantly accelerated at high concentrations of phosphorus in biological fluids. The hypothesis needs further experimental confirmation.

Alloying One-Dimensional Coordination Polymers To Create Ductile Materials.

Project description:The preparation of coordination polymer (CP) alloys is demonstrated by the use of two meltable, one-dimensional crystal structures via melt-kneading. The polymer structures of the alloys are studied by synchrotron X-ray absorption and scattering, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, DSC, and viscoelastic measurements. Crystalline and amorphous domains and thermal properties (melting and glass transition) in the alloys depend on the ratio of the two constituent CPs. The glassy alloy composed of an equivalent amount of two CPs shows high plastic deformation properties, and the fracture point reaches 128% without a filler or compatibilizing agent, hence behaving as ductile materials.

Corneal tissue changes following short-term soft contact lens wear of different materials.

Project description:PurposeTo study the effect of different soft contact lens (CL) materials during short-term wear on corneal tissue.MethodsTwenty-two healthy participants wore both silicone hydrogel (MyDay, CooperVision) and hydrogel soft CLs (Biomedics 1 day extra, CooperVision) for 8 h per lens. In each session, Scheimpflug images were captured before and immediately after CL removal. Images were analysed using the densitometry distribution analysis, a technique from which two parameters, α (corneal transparency) and β (corneal homogeneity), were estimated. In addition, the central corneal thickness changes after CL wear and the influence of the CL material on corneal transparency were evaluated.ResultsThe β parameter (homogeneity) increased by 5% after wearing both CL materials (paired t-test, p < 0.001). However, the α parameter (transparency) only increased in half of the participants. No material was found to be more determinant in causing the corneal densitometry changes. Statistically significant but not clinically relevant changes in corneal thickness were observed.ConclusionsBiomarkers of corneal tissue integrity (α and β) were affected by short-term soft contact lens wear. The observed changes in corneal transparency and homogeneity were not clinically relevant but support the importance of participant-material biocompatibility.

Short-lived species move uphill faster under climate change.

Project description:Climate change is pushing species ranges and abundances towards the poles and mountain tops. Although many studies have documented local altitudinal shifts, knowledge of general patterns at a large spatial scale, such as a whole mountain range, is scarce. From a conservation perspective, studying altitudinal shifts in wildlife is relevant because mountain regions often represent biodiversity hotspots and are among the most vulnerable ecosystems. Here, we examine whether altitudinal shifts in birds' abundances have occurred in the Scandinavian mountains over 13 years, and assess whether such shifts are related to species' traits. Using abundance data, we show a clear pattern of uphill shift in the mean altitude of bird abundance across the Scandinavian mountains, with an average speed of 0.9 m per year. Out of 76 species, 7 shifted significantly their abundance uphill. Altitudinal shift was strongly related to species' longevity: short-lived species showed more pronounced uphill shifts in abundance than long-lived species. The observed abundance shifts suggest that uphill shifts are not only driven by a small number of individuals at the range boundaries, but the overall bird abundances are on the move. Overall, the results underscore the wide-ranging impact of climate change and the potential vulnerability of species with slow life histories, as they appear less able to timely respond to rapidly changing climatic conditions.

Training Staff to Create Equivalence-Based Instruction Materials in Qualtrics.

Project description:Staff training is an important line of research to ensure that clinicians in the field of applied behavior analysis provide quality services. One approach to providing training involves the use of asynchronous training materials in which the trainer and trainee do not need to be physically present at the same time. This allows for training despite limited numbers of trainers or geographic restrictions. The purpose of this study was to train participants to create equivalence-based instruction (EBI) materials in Qualtrics, a commercial survey software package. In the first phase of the study, participants experienced a training package consisting of a video model and task analysis that described how to create EBI materials. Phase 2, evaluated whether the EBI materials created in Phase 1 led to equivalence-based responding. Results indicated that the training was effective for training staff and that staff found the training socially acceptable. Results also demonstrated that the EBI materials resulted in the learning of the trained and derived relations.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s40732-021-00497-4.
