Project description:This article presents outdoor air pollution data acquired from the real-time Air Quality Monitoring Network (AQMN), which was established by the Healthyair project team in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. The AQMN is made up of six air pollution monitoring stations spread over the city (Traffic, Residential, and Industrial). Each station measures the same contaminants in the air, including PM2.5, TSP, NO2, SO2, O3, CO, and two meteorological factors, temperature and humidity. This data is crucial for air quality modelling, spatiotemporal analysis, correlation analysis, and assessing local air pollution around the city. The data was first obtained in minute frequency, then transformed and produced in hourly frequency for analysis and modelling. The PM2.5 data from this dataset was used to construct an hourly air quality PM2.5 forecasting model in the publication titled "AI-based Air Quality PM2.5 Forecasting Models for Developing Countries: A Case Study of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam" by Rakholia et. al. (2022).

Project description:In this data article, a reconstructed database, which provides information from PHM08 challenge data set, is presented. The original turbofan engine data were from the Prognostic Center of Excellence (PCoE) of NASA Ames Research Center (Saxena and Goebel, 2008), and were simulated by the Commercial Modular Aero-Propulsion System Simulation (C-MAPSS) (Saxena et al., 2008). The data set is further divided into "training", "test" and "final test" subsets. It is expected from collaborators to train their models using "training" data subset, evaluate the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction performance on "test" subset and finally, apply the models to the "final test" subset for competition. However, the "final test" results can only be submitted once by email to PCoE. Before the results are sent for performance evaluation, in order to pre-validate the dataset with true RUL values, this data article introduces reconstructed secondary datasets derived from the noisy degradation patterns of original trajectories. Reconstructed database refers to data that were collected from the training trajectories. Fundamentally, it is formed of individual partial trajectories in which the RUL is known as a ground truth. Its use provides a robust validation of the model developed for the PHM08 data challenge that would otherwise be ambiguous due to the high-risk of one-time submission. These data and analyses support the research data article "A Neural Network Filtering Approach for Similarity-Based Remaining Useful Life Estimations" (Bektas et al., 2018).

Project description:Along with the rapid development of Intelligent Transportation Systems, traffic data collection technologies have progressed fast. The emergence of innovative data collection technologies such as remote traffic microwave sensor, Bluetooth sensor, GPS-based floating car method, and automated license plate recognition, has significantly increased the variety and volume of traffic data. Despite the development of these technologies, the missing data issue is still a problem that poses great challenge for data based applications such as traffic forecasting, real-time incident detection, dynamic route guidance, and massive evacuation optimization. A thorough literature review suggests most current imputation models either focus on the temporal nature of the traffic data and fail to consider the spatial information of neighboring locations or assume the data follow a certain distribution. These two issues reduce the imputation accuracy and limit the use of the corresponding imputation methods respectively. As a result, this paper presents a Kriging based data imputation approach that is able to fully utilize the spatiotemporal correlation in the traffic data and that does not assume the data follow any distribution. A set of scenarios with different missing rates are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The performance of the proposed method was compared with that of two other widely used methods, historical average and K-nearest neighborhood. Comparison results indicate that the proposed method has the highest imputation accuracy and is more flexible compared to other methods.

Project description:The unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19 significantly improved the atmospheric environment for lockdown-imposed regions; however, scant evidence exists on its impacts on regions without lockdown. A novel research framework is proposed to evaluate the long-term monthly spatiotemporal impact of COVID-19 on Taiwan air quality through different statistical analyses, including geostatistical analysis, change detection analysis and identification of nonattainment pollutant occurrence between the average mean air pollutant concentrations from 2018-2019 and 2020, considering both meteorological and public transportation impacts. Contrary to lockdown-imposed regions, insignificant or worsened air quality conditions were observed at the beginning of COVID-19, but a delayed improvement occurred after April in Taiwan. The annual mean concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, CO and O3 in 2020 were reduced by 24%, 18%, 15%, 9.6%, 7.4% and 1.3%, respectively (relative to 2018-2019), and the overall occurrence frequency of nonattainment air pollutants declined by over 30%. Backward stepwise regression models for each air pollutant were successfully constructed utilizing 12 meteorological parameters (R2 > 0.8 except for SO2) to simulate the meteorological normalized business-as-usual concentration. The hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory (HYSPLIT) model simulated the fate of air pollutants (e.g., local emissions or transboundary pollution) for anomalous months. The changes in different public transportation usage volumes (e.g., roadway, railway, air, and waterway) moderately reduced air pollution, particularly CO and NO2. Reduced public transportation use had a more significant impact than meteorology on air quality improvement in Taiwan, highlighting the importance of proper public transportation management for air pollution control and paving a new path for sustainable air quality management even in the absence of a lockdown.

Project description:Motor vehicle traffic is an important source of particulate pollution in cities of the developing world, where rapid growth, coupled with a lack of effective transport and land use planning, may result in harmful levels of fine particles (PM(2.5)) in the air. However, a lack of air monitoring data hinders health impact assessments and the development of transportation and land use policies that could reduce health burdens due to outdoor air pollution. To address this important need, a study of traffic-related PM(2.5) was carried out in the city of Nairobi, Kenya, a model city for sub-Saharan Africa, in July 2009. Sampling was carried out using portable filter-based air samplers carried in backpacks by technicians on weekdays over two weeks at several sites in and around Nairobi ranging from high-traffic roadways to rural background. Mean daytime concentrations of PM(2.5) ranged from 10.7 at the rural background site to 98.1 μg/m(3) on a sidewalk in the central business district. Horizontal dispersion measurements demonstrated a decrease in PM(2.5) concentration from 128.7 to 18.7 μg/m(3) over 100 meters downwind of a major intersection in Nairobi. A vertical dispersion experiment revealed a decrease from 119.5 μg/m(3) at street level to 42.8 μg/m(3) on a third-floor rooftop in the central business district. Though not directly comparable to air quality guidelines, which are based on 24-hour or annual averages, the urban concentrations we observed raise concern with regard to public health and related policy. Taken together with survey data on commuting patterns within Nairobi, these results suggest that many Nairobi residents are exposed on a regular basis to elevated concentrations of fine particle air pollution, with potentially serious long-term implications for health.

Project description:In 2020, the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Korea, and social distancing was implemented to prevent its spread. This reduced the movement of people, and changes in air quality were expected owing to reduced emissions. In the present paper, the impact of traffic volume change caused by COVID-19 on air quality in Seoul, Korea, is examined. Two regression analyses were performed using the generalized additive model (GAM), assuming a Gaussian distribution; the relationships between (1) the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in 2020-2021 and the rate of change in the traffic volume in Seoul, and (2) the traffic volume and the rate of change in the air quality in Seoul from 2016 to 2019 were analyzed. The regression results show that traffic decreased by 0.00431% per COVID-19 case; when traffic fell by 1%, the PM10, PM2.5, CO, NO2, O3, and SO2 concentrations fell by 0.48%, 0.94%, 0.39%, 0.74%, 0.16%, and -0.01%, respectively. This mechanism accounts for air quality improvements in PM10, PM2.5, CO, NO2, and O3 in Seoul during 2020-2021. From these results, the majority of the reduction in pollutant concentrations in 2020-2021 appears to be the result of a long-term declining trend rather than COVID-19.

Project description:This study presents a trend analysis of a two-decade (2000-2020) series of surface meteorological and air quality data measured in Rome (Italy). Data series are collected at three sites in Rome downtown and its coastal surroundings. This paper fills the gap due to missing or incomplete recent information about the meteorological and atmospheric composition tendencies in the Rome area. Datasets are subjected to in-depth quality control and to statistical analysis to verify the data homogeneity, whilst trend analysis is performed using the Seasonal Kendall test. The results show a statistically significant positive trend for average air temperature (0.07 °C year-1 in urban and coastal sites), whilst maximum and minimum temperatures increase more in urban (0.10 °C year-1) than in coastal (0.01 °C year-1) environment. The water vapour mixing ratio trend is higher in the city (0.10 g kg-1 year-1) than along the coast (0.03 g kg-1 year-1). The heat index tendency is more pronounced in the Rome centre (0.11 °C year-1) than in the coast (0.06 °C year-1). The monthly cumulative precipitations do not show statistically significant trends. On the other hand, air quality generally improved: surface pollutant concentrations show a significant decrease thanks to the reduction of local emissions (C6H6, - 0.12 µg m-3 year-1; SO2, - 0.09 µg m-3 year-1; CO, - 0.02 mg m-3 year-1; NOx, - 1.28 µg m-3 year-1; NO, - 0.38 µg m-3 year-1; NO2, - 0.60 µg m-3 year-1, PM10, - 0.35 µg m-3 year-1). Only O3 shows a statistically significant positive trend (0.15 µg m-3 year-1), in agreement with wider scale studies. The outcomes suggest that whilst local and national policies contribute to the improvement of air quality, the rising of temperature-as likely consequence of climate change-may be an emerging cause of concern for human thermal discomfort and potential effect on the conservation of tangible immovable heritage.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s00704-022-04047-y.

Project description:Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an important cause of respiratory illness among children. While studies have focused on the air-quality and climate dependence of RSV infections, few have been undertaken in South-East Asia where the burden of respiratory illness is among the highest across the globe. This study aimed to determine the relationships between climatic factors and air quality with RSV infections among children in Singapore. We obtained all laboratory-confirmed reports of RSV infections in children below 5 years old from the largest public hospital specializing in pediatric healthcare in Singapore. We assessed the independent cumulative effects of air quality and meteorological factors on RSV infection risk using the Distributed Lag Non-Linear Model (DLNM) framework in negative binomial models adjusted for long-term trend, seasonality and changes in the diagnostic systems. We included 15,715 laboratory-confirmed RSV reports from 2009 to 2019. Daily maximum temperature exhibited a complex, non-linear association with RSV infections. Absolute humidity (Relative Risk, 90th percentile [RR90th percentile]: 1.170, 95% CI: [1.102, 1.242]) was positively associated with RSV risk. Higher levels of particulate matter of aerodynamic diameter of less than (i) 2.5 µm (PM2.5), (ii) 10 µm (PM10), carbon monoxide (CO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were associated with lower RSV infection risk. RSV infections exhibited both annual and within-year seasonality. Our findings suggest that falls in ambient temperature and rises in absolute humidity exacerbated pediatric RSV infection risk while increases in air pollutant concentrations were associated with lowered infection risk. These meteorological factors, together with the predictable seasonality of RSV infections, can inform the timing of mitigation measures aimed at reducing transmission.

Project description:A photochemical model platform for Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands predicting O3, PM2.5, and regional haze would be useful to support assessments relevant for the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), Regional Haze Rule, and the Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) program. These areas have not traditionally been modeled with photochemical transport models, but a reasonable representation of meteorology, emissions (natural and anthropogenic), chemistry, and deposition could support air quality management decisions in these areas. Here, a prognostic meteorological model (Weather Research and Forecasting) and photochemical transport (Community Multiscale Air Quality) model were applied for the entire year of 2016 at 27, 9, and 3 km grid resolution for areas covering the Hawaiian Islands and Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands. Model predictions were compared against surface and upper air meteorological and chemical measurements available in both areas. The vertical gradient of temperature, humidity, and winds in the troposphere was well represented. Surface layer meteorological model performance was spatially variable, but temperature tended to be underestimated in Hawaii. Chemically speciated daily average PM2.5 was generally well characterized by the modeling system at urban and rural monitors in Hawaii and Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands. Model performance was notably impacted by the wildfire emission methodology. Model performance was mixed for hourly SO2, NO2, PM2.5, and CO and was often related to how well local emissions sources were characterized. SO2 predictions were much lower than measurements at monitors near active volcanos on Hawaii, which was expected since volcanic emissions were not included in these model simulations. Further research is needed to assess emission inventory representation of these areas and how microscale meteorology influenced by the complex land-water and terrain interfaces impacts higher time resolution performance.

Project description:Central African countries may bear high climate change-related infectious disease burdens because of preexisting high rates of disease, poor healthcare infrastructure, land use changes, and high environmental change vulnerabilities. However, making connections between climate and infectious diseases in this region is hampered by the paucity of high-quality meteorological data. This review analyzes the sources and quality of meteorological data used to study the interactions between weather and infectious diseases in Central African countries. Results show that 23% of studies used meteorological data that mismatched with the disease spatial scale of interest. Use of inappropriate weather data was most frequently identified in analyses using meteorological station data or gridded data products. These findings have implications for the interpretation of existing analyses and provide guidance for the use of climate data in future analyses of the connections between meteorology and infectious diseases in Central Africa.
