A gridded dataset on densities, real estate prices, transport, and land use inside 192 worldwide urban areas.

ABSTRACT: This work presents a gridded dataset on real estate and transportation in 192 worldwide urban areas, obtained from the Google Maps API and the web scraping of real estate websites. For each city of the sample, these data have been associated with the corresponding population density and land cover data, extracted from the GHS POP and ESA CCI data respectively, and aggregated on a 1 km resolution grid, allowing for an integrated analysis. This dataset is the first to include spatialized real estate and transportation data in a large sample of cities covering 800 million people in both developed and developing countries. These data can be used as inputs for urban modeling purposes, transport modeling, or between-city comparisons in urban forms and transportation networks, and allow further analyses on e.g. urban sprawl, access to transportation, or equity in housing prices and access to transportation.

Worldwide continuous gap-filled MODIS land surface temperature dataset.

Project description:Satellite land surface temperature (LST) is vital for climatological and environmental studies. However, LST datasets are not continuous in time and space mainly due to cloud cover. Here we combine LST with Climate Forecast System Version 2 (CFSv2) modeled temperatures to derive a continuous gap filled global LST dataset at a spatial resolution of 1 km. Temporal Fourier analysis is used to derive the seasonality (climatology) on a pixel-by-pixel basis, for LST and CFSv2 temperatures. Gaps are filled by adding the CFSv2 temperature anomaly to climatological LST. The accuracy is evaluated in nine regions across the globe using cloud-free LST (mean values: R2 = 0.93, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) = 2.7 °C, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) = 2.1 °C). The provided dataset contains day, night, and daily mean LST for the Eastern Mediterranean. We provide a Google Earth Engine code and a web app that generates gap filled LST in any part of the world, alongside a pixel-based evaluation of the data in terms of MAE, RMSE and Pearson's r.

Local biodiversity is higher inside than outside terrestrial protected areas worldwide.

Project description:Protected areas are widely considered essential for biodiversity conservation. However, few global studies have demonstrated that protection benefits a broad range of species. Here, using a new global biodiversity database with unprecedented geographic and taxonomic coverage, we compare four biodiversity measures at sites sampled in multiple land uses inside and outside protected areas. Globally, species richness is 10.6% higher and abundance 14.5% higher in samples taken inside protected areas compared with samples taken outside, but neither rarefaction-based richness nor endemicity differ significantly. Importantly, we show that the positive effects of protection are mostly attributable to differences in land use between protected and unprotected sites. Nonetheless, even within some human-dominated land uses, species richness and abundance are higher in protected sites. Our results reinforce the global importance of protected areas but suggest that protection does not consistently benefit species with small ranges or increase the variety of ecological niches.

China’s Gridded Manufacturing Dataset

Project description:The growth of the manufacturing industry is the engine of rapid economic growth in developing regions. Characterizing the geographical distribution of manufacturing firms is critically important for scientists and policymakers. However, data on the manufacturing industry used in previous studies either have a low spatial resolution (or fuzzy classification) or high-resolution information is lacking. Here, we propose a map point-of-interest classification method based on machine learning technology and build a dataset of the distribution of Chinese manufacturing firms called the Gridded Manufacturing Dataset. This dataset includes the number and type of manufacturing firms at a 0.01° latitude by 0.01° longitude scale. It includes all manufacturing firms (classified into seven categories) in China in 2015 (4.56 million) and 2019 (6.19 million). This dataset can be used to characterize temporal and spatial patterns in the distribution of manufacturing firms as well as reveal the mechanisms underlying the development of the manufacturing industry and changes in regional economic policies. Australian gridded chloride deposition-rate dataset.

Project description:Chloride deposition-rate measurements at points within Australia are upscaled to the entire continent on a regular 0.05° grid. The upscaling uses a double-exponential correlation between deposition rate and distance to the coast, where the parameters in the double-exponential are spatially varying. These parameters are estimated using least-squares with Tikhonov regularisation to ensure minimal spatial variability. A calibration-constrained, null-space Monte-Carlo analysis is used to quantify uncertainty in the prediction. The resulting dataset consists of the best-fit chloride deposition rates across Australia, as well as estimates of uncertainty. The dataset can be used for various purposes including: estimating groundwater recharge through the use of the chloride mass-balance method; catchment salt balance estimates; regional investigations of groundwater hydrochemistry; and, corrosion prediction.

Neural network hyperparameter optimization for prediction of real estate prices in Helsinki.

Project description:Accurate price evaluation of real estate is beneficial for many parties involved in real estate business such as real estate companies, property owners, investors, banks, and financial institutes. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have shown promising results in real estate price evaluation. However, the performance of ANNs greatly depends upon the settings of their hyperparameters. In this paper, we apply and optimize an ANN model for real estate price prediction in Helsinki, Finland. Optimization of the model is performed by fine-tuning hyper-parameters (such as activation functions, optimization algorithms, etc.) of the ANN architecture for higher accuracy using the Bayesian optimization algorithm. The results are evaluated using a variety of metrics (RMSE, MAE, R2) as well as illustrated graphically. The empirical analysis of the results shows that model optimization improved the performance on all metrics (reaching the relative mean error of 8.3%).

Project description:The dataset represents a collection of real estate announcements published in 2018 in the Latvian leading advertisement website www.ss.com [1]. In the Latvian case, mentioned advertisement website is alternative information source in contrast with several (5-7) large real estate agencies. The mentioned advertisement website has no important competitors in Latvia, closer competitor reklama. lv [2] is 4-5 times smaller. Advertisement website www.ss.com represents information from small and medium size agencies, as well from individuals, who want to take part in the real estate market. The collected dataset reflects the observation dynamics of 12 months during 2018, including in total 238 thousand observations. Dataset has 24 dimensions, such as in announcement mentioned price for real estate, deal types, dimensions of location of real estate, such as region, district, address; characteristics of real estate, such as real estate type (land, flat and so on), size and main characteristics for each real estate type, such as land area or bad rooms in apartments. The dataset is hosted in Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) repository [3].

Variation in drug prices at pharmacies: are prices higher in poorer areas?

Project description:ObjectiveTo determine whether retail prices for prescription drugs are higher in poorer areas.Data sourcesThe MyFloridarx.com website, which provides retail prescription prices at Florida pharmacies, and median ZIP code income from the 2000 Census.Study designWe compared mean pharmacy prices for each of the four study drugs across ZIP code income groups. Pharmacies were classified as either chain pharmacies or independent pharmacies.Data collectionPrices were downloaded in November 2006.Principal findingsAcross the four study drugs, mean prices were highest in the poorest ZIP codes: 9 percent above the statewide average. Independent pharmacies in the poorest ZIP codes charged the highest mean prices.ConclusionsRetail prescription prices appear to be higher in poorer ZIP codes of Florida.

Real estate data to analyse the relationship between property prices, sustainability levels and socio-economic indicators.

Project description:Recent studies have sought to explore the relationship between environmental and financial performance, in particular the relationship between the energy efficiency level of a building and its financial value. The present real estate dataset contains 43 variables of repeat sales transactions, energy performance certificate (EPC) rating, index of multiple deprivation (IMD), and geographical location of properties in England and Wales involved in a total of 4,201 transactions from 1995 to 2012. This dataset enables researchers and practitioners to further explore important questions regarding the nexus between the real estate industry, sustainability levels, and socio-economic aspects. Due to the scarcity of publicly available quality real estate data, the dataset detailed in this article may play a relevant role by becoming easily discoverable, clearly explained, and structured to be ready to be used by researchers, analysts, and policymakers. The empirical analysis of the economic case for energy-efficient dwellings in the UK private rental market performed in Fuerst, et al. [1] is based on this dataset.

Online housing search dataset: Information flows of real estate platform users.

Project description:This data article describes user-generated data of Funda.nl, the largest online housing market website of the Netherlands. The data contain the inflow and outflow of hits (mouse clicks, opening of webpages, etc.) at the municipality level. The municipality of the user defines the origin and the municipality of the property that is viewed defines the destination. The data capture real behavior of the platform users. The flow data are based on 1.1 billion hits that are made by the users of the website in the first six months of 2018. The underlying data are collected by Google Analytics, the web analytics tool of Google. Funda utilizes the data for platform stability, security, product development, etc. The proprietary data of Funda are used to generate the information flows between municipalities. In the full sample we have 148,216 information flows between municipalities in the Netherlands, among which 313 zero flows. The data include subsamples for different types of platform users as user search intentions range from serious to fully recreational. The data enable researchers to analyze housing search behavior from a novel perspective. The data are, for instance, relevant for housing market researchers, digital economists, and economic geographers.

Gridded land use data for the conterminous United States 1940-2015.

Project description:Multiple aspects of our society are reflected in how we have transformed land through time. However, limited availability of historical-spatial data at fine granularity have hindered our ability to advance our understanding of the ways in which land was developed over the long-term. Using a proprietary, national housing and property database, which is a result of large-scale, industry-fuelled data harmonization efforts, we created publicly available sequences of gridded surfaces that describe built land use progression in the conterminous United States at fine spatial (i.e., 250 m × 250 m) and temporal resolution (i.e., 1 year - 5 years) between the years 1940 and 2015. There are six land use classes represented in the data product: agricultural, commercial, industrial, residential-owned, residential-income, and recreational facilities, as well as complimentary uncertainty layers informing the users about quantifiable components of data uncertainty. The datasets are part of the Historical Settlement Data Compilation for the U.S. (HISDAC-US) and enable the creation of new knowledge of long-term land use dynamics, opening novel avenues of inquiry across multiple fields of study.
