Project description:Burnout is recognized as an occupational hazard, and nursing has a high risk of burnout. This study aims to explore the relationship between psychological capital (PsyCap) and burnout among Chinese nurses and the mediating role of coping style in this relationship.A total of 1,496 nurses (effective response rate: 80.11%) from two large general hospitals in Daqing City of China were selected as participants. Data were collected via the Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory (CMBI), the psychological capital questionnaire (PCQ-24), the Chinese Trait Coping Style Questionnaire (TCSQ) and demographic and caregiver-patient relationship. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed to explore the mediating role of positive coping and negative coping, and we used the Bootstrap method to confirm the mediating effect.Self-efficacy, hope, resilience and optimism of nurses were all negatively related with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment among Chinese nurses. Positive coping partially mediated the relationship between hope/optimism and emotional exhaustion and between self-efficacy/optimism and reduced personal accomplishment. Negative coping fully mediated the relationship between self-efficacy and emotional exhaustion, and in the regression model self-efficacy was positively correlated with emotional exhaustion. And negative coping also partially mediated the relationship between hope/optimism and emotional exhaustion and between optimism and depersonalization.PsyCap had effects on burnout and coping style was a mediator in this relationship among Chinese nurses. Nurses who had a strong sense of self-efficacy adopted more negative coping style, which in turn would lead to higher levels of emotional exhaustion. These findings shed light on the influence of negative coping on burnout, and positive coping was a positive resource for fighting against nurses' burnout. Hence, in order to avoid negative coping style, improve skill of coping and enhance PsyCap of nurses, active interventions should be developed in the future.

Project description:BackgroundPsychological capital, an intrinsic personal asset, enhances junior nurses' ability to navigate transition and sustain superior job performance. This study aimed to classify junior nurses into distinct psychological capital profiles and examine their associations with burnout and perceived stress levels.MethodsA cross-sectional study involving 480 junior nurses from three hospitals in Beijing assessed psychological capital, stress, and burnout using e-questionnaires, from July 2021 to August 2022. We employed exploratory latent profile analysis for psychological capital profiling and logistic regression with the best subset method to identify the influential factors.ResultsThe results of the latent profile analysis supported the models of two latent profiles, which were defined as low psychological capital (224, 46.5%) and high psychological capital (256, 53.5%). Logistic regression revealed that introverted nurses and those experiencing moderate to high levels of burnout and stress were more likely to exhibit low psychological capital.ConclusionNursing management should proactively identify and support junior nurses with low psychological capital, with a focus on introverted individuals, to mitigate the impact of stress and burnout.

Project description:BackgroundThe development of core competency is crucial for the success of new nurses, enabling them to deliver high-quality care. Psychological capital (PsyCap), encompassing self-efficacy, optimism, hope, and resilience, significantly influences individuals' abilities and achievements across various professions. However, limited research has specifically examined the impact of PsyCap on the core competency of new nurses. This study aims to bridge this gap by investigating the relationship between PsyCap and core competency development in new nurses, providing valuable strategic insights for improving PsyCap and promoting core competence acquisition.Methods142 new nurses were chosen for the investigation using a convenient cluster sampling method. The questionnaire included components on socio-demographic characteristics, the Competency Inventory for Registered Nurses (CIRN), and the PsyCap Questionnaire-24 (PCQ-24). The t-test, One-Way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis and hierarchical multiple regression were used for statistical analysis.ResultThe number of valid questionnaires was 138, and the effective return rate was 97.2%. The overall mean score for core competencies was 171.01 (SD 25.34), and the PsyCap score was 104.76(SD 13.71). The PsyCap of new nurses was highly correlated with core competency, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.7, p < 0.01. Self-efficacy of PsyCap is a significant independent predictor of core competency (adjust R2 = 0.49).ConclusionSelf-efficacy in PsyCap is an important predictor of new nurses' core competency. Nursing managers should pay sufficient attention to the cultivation and development of new nurses' PsyCap, with particular emphasis on enhancing self-efficacy to improve their core competency.

Project description:ObjectivesThis study aims to investigate the environmental and individual factors contributing to male nurses' psychological well-being and to explore the psychological mechanisms that may explain the links between nurses' practice environment and work engagement, thereby presenting the implications for nurse managers.MethodsA total of 161 male nurses from three tertiary first-class hospitals in Changsha City in China participated in the study. We collected the data using the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, the Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale.ResultsScores of male nurses' practice environment (2.88 ± 0.31), psychological capital (4.42 ± 0.62), and work engagement (3.17 ± 1.39) were all above the midpoint; however, the subscales "the nursing staffing and resources adequacy" (2.72 ± 0.48), "hope" (4.33 ± 0.72), and "dedication" (2.96 ± 1.61)scored lowest. Nurses' practice environment and psychological capital positively predicted nurses' work engagement; psychological capital fully mediated the influence of nurses' practice environment on work engagement.ConclusionsCreating a supportive nursing practice environment can increase male nurses' work engagement by developing their psychological capital. Nurse managers can then provide reasonable workload and pathways for male nurses to achieve goals, thereby fostering their hope.

Project description:BackgroundNurse burnout and turnover intention significantly impact global healthcare systems, especially intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study employs network analysis to explore these phenomena, providing insights into the interdependencies and potential intervention points within the constructs of burnout and turnover intention among nurses.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted with 560 nurses from three tertiary hospitals in Hangzhou, China. Data were collected via online questionnaires, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) and the Turnover Intention Questionnaire (TIQ). Network analysis was performed using Gaussian graphical models to construct the network model and calculate related metrics.ResultsThe network analysis revealed that items related to personal accomplishment and emotional exhaustion were central, indicating significant roles in influencing nurses' turnover intentions. Specifically, perceived meaningful work and self-efficacy emerged as pivotal nodes, suggesting that enhancing these can mitigate turnover intentions. The network's stability and accuracy were confirmed through bootstrapping methods, emphasizing the robustness of the findings.ConclusionThe study underscores the importance of addressing nurse burnout by focusing on core elements like personal accomplishment and self-efficacy to reduce turnover intentions. These insights facilitate targeted interventions that could improve nurse retention and stability within healthcare systems. Future research should expand to multi-center studies to enhance the generalizability of these findings.

Project description:Nursing burnout is associated with reduced nursing performance outcomes. Positive psychological capital is known to play an important role in improving workers' job performance. However, the association among the three variables has rarely been addressed. The purpose of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to explore the association between burnout and nursing performance outcomes among Korean nurses working at a tertiary hospital and the mediating role of psychological capital in this relationship. Recruited through convenience sampling, a total of 285 nurses provided data on their demographic characteristics and completed a structured questionnaire consisting of items from the Professional Quality of Life Scale (burnout), Nursing Performance Scale, and Psychology Capital Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, student's t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze data. The significance of the mediation effect was obtained using a bootstrap approach with the PROCESS macro. The mean age of participants was 30.51 years, and most participants were females (94.0%) and unmarried (71.6%); more than half (57.5%) experienced a severe workload. The average (±standard deviation) scores of burnout, nursing performance outcomes, and positive psychological capital were 28.77 ± 4.93, 2.98 ± 0.32, and 3.19 ± 0.45, respectively. Burnout was associated with nursing performance among clinical nurses (? = -0.20, p < 0.001). Positive psychological capital mediated the association between burnout and nursing performance outcomes (? = 0.41, p < 0.001). These findings contribute to the understanding that burnout among nurses could be reduced by increased positive psychological capital, which results in improved performance outcomes. The findings also indicate that interventions to improve positive psychological capital should be developed and implemented for nurses' burnout management and improvement in nursing performance outcomes.

Project description:BackgroundPsychological capital (PsyCap) is a positive internal resource for individuals, playing a crucial role in mental health. Evaluating nurses' psychological capital is important for understanding their mental well-being, as they face unique occupational stressors. However, existing PsyCap questionnaires are developed for various other professions such as enterprise employees, teachers, patients, teenagers, and civil servants, making them less suitable for the nursing profession. The main aim of this study is to develop and validate a Psychological Capital Questionnaire specifically tailored to the nursing occupation in Chinese clinical settings.MethodsThis is a multi-stage, cross-sectional study conducted between March 2022 and May 2023. Preliminary items of the scale were generated through a literature review, theoretical research, and the Delphi method. The final questionnaire was validated through two rounds of data collection. In the first stage, 236 nurses were selected using purposive sampling for item analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA)and reliability testing. In the second stage, data were collected from 494 nurses using convenience sampling to conduct confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).ResultsThe final questionnaire contains 30 items, with six factors extracted by EFA, accounting for 77.59% of the total variance. The confirmatory factor analysis showed good model fit, with the following indices: χ²/df = 4.052, GFI = 0.836, CFI = 0.938, TLI = 0.926, NFI = 0.919, RMSEA = 0.079, RMR = 0.030. The reliability measures were high, with a Cronbach's α of 0.976, split-half coefficient of 0.976, and test-retest reliability of 0.941 and 0.963.ConclusionsThe Psychological Capital Questionnaire for Nurses exhibits strong psychometric properties, making it a valuable tool for assessing the psychological capital of nurses in Chinese clinical settings.

Project description:ObjectiveTo examine the relationship between workplace violence (WPV) and professional identity among Chinese psychiatric nurses and the mediating effects of psychological capital (PsyCap) from this association.SettingSeven public tertiary psychiatric hospitals in Liaoning Province, China.ParticipantsA total of 952 psychiatric nurses were recruited for this study. Registered nurses who have been engaged in psychiatric nursing for more than 1 year were eligible as participants in this investigation.Outcome measuresQuestionnaires consisting of the Workplace Violence Scale, the Occupational Identity Scale, the Psychological Capital Questionnaire and a demographic data sheet were used to collect participant information. We used hierarchical multiple regression and asymptotic and resampling strategies to examine the mediating role of PsyCap in the relationship between WPV and professional identity.ResultsWPV was negatively associated with professional identity after controlling for demographic factors (β=-0.353; p<0.001). PsyCap mediated the relationship between WPV and professional identity, according to the mediation analysis (a×b=-0.150, bias-corrected and accelerated 95% CI (BCa 95% CI) (-0.185 to -0.115); p<0.001). In addition, two dimensions of PsyCap: hope (a×b=-0.075, BCa 95% CI (-0.104 to -0.049); p<0.001) and resilience (a×b=-0.064, BCa 95% CI (-0.090 to -0.039); p<0.001) mediated the association between WPV and professional identity. For professional identity, hope, resilience and PsyCap mediation accounted for 21.6%, 18.1% and 42.4%, respectively.ConclusionsBased on these findings, PsyCap could partially mediate the relationship between WPV and professional identity. Therefore, hospital administrators should implement measures to prevent and reduce WPV and provide nurses with skills training programmes to improve the PsyCap such as hope and resilience.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aims to understand the job burnout status of female nurses with two children and explore the mediating role of psychological capital between dyadic stress and job burnout.MethodsWe used a random sampling method to select 386 female nurses with two children from four tertiary level hospitals between July and October 2020. A general data questionnaire, dyadic stress scale, psychological capital scale, and job burnout scale were used for the investigation and analysis.ResultsThe psychological capital score of nurses with two children was 84.87±15.45, the dyadic stress was 34.48±6.18, and the job burnout score was 68.28±14.28. Factors affecting the binary stress score, psychological capital score, and job burnout score of nurses with two children included age, professional title, length of service, monthly income, age of the first child, the type of childcare arrangements, and hospital department. The psychological capital score was negatively correlated with the job burnout score (r=-0.617, P<0.01). There was a positive correlation between the dyadic stress score and the job burnout score (r=0.539, P<0.01), and a negative correlation between the psychological capital score and the binary stress score (r=-0.528, P<0.01). The mediating effect of psychological capital was 0.199, accounting for 36.71% of the total effect.ConclusionsThe results showed that dyadic stress and job burnout in nurses with two children were at a high level and that psychological capital played a partial mediating role between binary stress and job burnout.

Project description:BackgroundAthlete burnout represents a critical concern in sports psychology, significantly affecting athletes' well-being and performance. This study examined the relationships among psychological capital, coping strategies, perceived stress, and athlete burnout.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted among 344 athletes, and data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 25.0 and PROCESS Macro v4.1 for hierarchical stepwise regression and moderated mediation analysis. Control variables included age, gender, sport type, and competitive experience.ResultsThe results revealed that psychological capital negatively associated with burnout both directly ( β = -0.539, p < 0.01) and indirectly (a*b = -0.803, p < 0.01) through coping strategies. Furthermore, perceived stress influenced both the relationship between psychological capital and coping strategies and the indirect effect of psychological capital on burnout via coping strategies. Notably, under high-stress conditions, the negative association of psychological capital was more pronounced, with a more substantial indirect effect compared to low-stress conditions ( β = -1.020, p < .01 vs. β = -0.299, p < .01).ConclusionsThese findings underscore the importance of cultivating psychological resources and adaptive coping mechanisms to mitigate burnout, offering valuable insights for targeted interventions aimed at enhancing the well-being of athletes, particularly those experiencing elevated stress levels.
