An alternate hybrid PWM for uniform thermal sharing in single phase voltage-source inverter.

ABSTRACT: The most prevalent reason for IGBT failure in voltage-source inverter (VSI) is thermal stress, which is influenced by the topology and modulation technique adopted. Hence, it is crucial to understand the impact of common sinusoidal pulse width modulation (PWM) strategies on the thermal behavior of VSI and develop improved PWM techniques. This paper presents an alternate hybrid PWM (AHPWM) switching sequence for a single-phase VSI to decrease its thermal stress and prolong its lifetime. To evaluate the number of cycles to failure of VSI, power loss and thermal analysis were conducted for VSI with AHPWM and compared with conventional PWMs. The thermal cycles experienced by IGBTs with different modulation techniques were experimentally validated using a laboratory prototype of VSI. These findings suggest that by employing AHPWM, the likelihood of VSI failure is reduced by at least one-and-a-half times, resulting in lower VSI maintenance costs.

Project description:The present paper proposes a novel design of a stabilized single-phase voltage-source inverter with pure sinusoidal output voltage for photovoltaic systems employed for feeding sensitive loads in nuclear installations. Such types of loads require a voltage source with quite stabilized magnitude and frequency and pure sinusoidal shape that is free from higher-order harmonics. The inverter is based on an H-bridge four insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) with gate drivers and optocoupler isolators. A control system based on a fast DSP unit and a microcontroller is designed for cancelation of the higher-order harmonics to produce a pure sinusoidal output with almost zero total harmonic distortion (THD). The sinusoidal purity, frequency and magnitude stabilization are achieved through pulse width modulation (PWM) controlled by a fast-response feedback system that measures the time wave form of the output voltage applied to the load and then calculates the THD, frequency and amplitude. The sinusoidal shaping is performed with aid of a sinusoidal shaping filter (SSF) to fasten the operation of higher-order harmonic cancellation. The frequency measurement is achieved through a frequency counter whereas the amplitude measurement is carried out through a differential amplifier that amplifies the difference between the output voltage of the inverter (while being applied to the load) and reference voltage that determines the desired amplitude. A prototype of the entire system of the proposed voltage-source inverter is fabricated for experimental evaluation of its performance. It is shown through simulation and experimental work that the proposed control system of the inverter output voltage is able to stabilize both the amplitude and frequency of the voltage applied to the load irrespective of the load impedance. Also, it is shown that the THD of the output voltage is -57dB ( 0.00025% ), which is almost zero. Moreover, the switching losses are considerably reduced and can be negligible owing to the use of the appropriate IGBTs. The efficiency of the proposed inverter is obtained by simulation taking into account all types of losses. Also, the dependence of the inverter efficiency on the load current is investigated. The average efficiency of the proposed voltage-source inverter is shown to be higher than 97% .

Project description:The distribution of cellular source-sink relationships plays an important role in cardiac propagation. It can lead to conduction slowing and block as well as wave fractionation. It is of great interest to unravel the mechanisms underlying evolution in wavefront geometry. Our goal is to investigate the role of the source-sink relationship on wavefront geometry using computer simulations. We analyzed the role of variability in the microscopic source-sink relationship in driving changes in wavefront geometry. The electrophysiological activity of a homogeneous isotropic tissue was simulated using the ten Tusscher and Panfilov 2006 action potential model and the source-sink relationship was characterized using an improved version of the Romero et al. safety factor formulation (SFm2). Our simulations reveal that non-uniform dispersion of the cellular source-sink relationship (dispersion along the wavefront) leads to alterations in curvature. To better understand the role of the source-sink relationship in the process of wave formation, the electrophysiological activity at the initiation of excitation waves in a 1D strand was examined and the source-sink relationship was characterized using the two recently updated safety factor formulations: the SFm2 and the Boyle-Vigmond (SFVB) definitions. The electrophysiological activity at the initiation of excitation waves was intimately related to the SFm2 profiles, while the SFVB led to several counterintuitive observations. Importantly, with the SFm2 characterization, a critical source-sink relationship for initiation of excitation waves was identified, which was independent of the size of the electrode of excitation, membrane excitability, or tissue conductivity. In conclusion, our work suggests that non-uniform dispersion of the source-sink relationship alters wavefront curvature and a critical source-sink relationship profile separates wave expansion from collapse. Our study reinforces the idea that the safety factor represents a powerful tool to study the mechanisms of cardiac propagation in silico, providing a better understanding of cardiac arrhythmias and their therapy.
